Hello all,

I am looking for a free remote desktop solution for Ubuntu.

My company recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu for desktop computers, but our developers need to remotely connect (with access to the Ubuntu GUI) from their Macbooks.

For a few weeks, we have been experimenting with NoMachine; a wonderful, versatile, and secure application which I fully endorse. Unfortunately, their per-year licensing fees might be cost prohibitive (BTW, it is free for non-commercial use). As part of my due-diligence, I must find a free alternative (like we had when our desktops were on Windows 10).

Our criteria:
- Must be free to use without restrictions (or a significantly lower cost than NoMachine's $44 per user per year)
- Must pass our internal security testing. For one, it can't rely on external servers like Teamviewer.
- Must allow remote access to the Ubuntu desktop GUI from MacOS.
- Must be relatively easy to script and preset by admins for distribution in a standard Ubuntu image.

I've looked at a few options, such as:
  • - xrdp (potential problem: I can't find a recent binary and it seems like a dead project)
  • - VNC (potential problems: there are so many variations. Finding an acceptably secure one is still in the works. Might not allow for a remote session that locks/blanks Ubuntu's (host) physical monitor(s). Might not support dual monitors from host. One example that I'm investigating is x11vnc with RealVNC viewer on the Mac side.

How would one go about upgrading MacOS devices to the latest OS (High Sierra at the time of this post) through terminal commands only?  For example, a device running El Capitan needs to be upgraded to High Sierra.  I am looking to run this command across multiple MacOS devices, and for a command or script that could run on any MacOS device.

I am moving to my MacBook Pro; HighSierra 10.13.5 from my old PC that finally died. The Mac has a new install of o365, Outlook v2016. I set up my email (cox.net/imap); and it works great. The problem is importing my .PST from my current Windows PC; Outlook 2013. The .PST is approx 2gb. The import works fine; no errors, but when I restart and look in "On My Computer", there is nothing there; no inbox; folders; nothing. It DOES import Tasks (Categories, etc). Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I understand that Microsoft's Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) is able to troubleshoot Outlook for MAC versions 2016 and 2011.

Is it possible to install and run SaRA on a MAC client? Is there a .dmg available for download?

Thanks in advance for the guidance. I've been unable to find an answer.

We have a mac in the shop that when you tunr it on you get the mac chime, then the apple logo, and then a progress bar. The progress bar move about halfway and then the screen goes white. We have tried online recovery, reset NVRAM and SMC, safe mode, and CTRL+R. None of these have gotten us anywhere. Just wanted to reach out and see if anyone had any other ideas. Client is a photographer and has tons of pictures on this mac. Was trying to keep from having to offload the pictures and reinstall.

I have multiple macs logging into an AD domain. This has been the case for 7 years. No problems for 7 years. Suddenly, I am having multiple Macs unable to log back in after their screensaver has kicked in, or their computer has gone to sleep. They are told they have an incorrect password. The only way for the user to log back in is to force the Mac to shut down, wait a few minutes, then boot back up. Once done they are able to login. Most users this has happened to were able to do this once or twice and the problem disappeared. One user has not been so lucky. I have been working on her system for 2 days now with no luck.

One common solution to the problem is to turn off the password requirement when waking the computer. However, in a work environment, this is very insecure. I have tried other solutions, including increasing the DSBindTimeout. Now I am at a loss.

Computers running OSX (Not sure what version) all of a sudden are having problems resolving DNS.  This is all within the same household.  The family can go to a local coffee shop and experience the same issues while connected to WIFi there when no one else is having the problem.  The latency only seems to be an issue when you're using a web browser.  If you run nslookup from the console or ping, no problems are evident.

  • DNS resolution from the console is instant no matter what.
  • Flushed DNS Cache
  • Reset PRAM
  • Reset SMC
  • Tried different browsers, DNS resolution in all browsers takes 30-60 seconds per domain.
  • Ran ESET Cyber Security Pro to see if anything popped up there, nothing did.
  • Going to run Malwarebytes to see what it finds.
  • Tried different DNS, 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8

Please advise.

Is there a way of forcing the time to be shown on the menu bar in full screen mode without having to move the cursor/mouse to the top of the screen or pressing any buttons or working in non full screen mode?

Mac OSX question

I have a large library of digital media. Most of it is kept "offline" but the library software I use (Plex) uses media files to build the library and so I need to use placeholder files.

Using 30 second "this file is archived" videos I can easily catalog offline movies in Plex. I "rsync" the directory structure without files and then "do cp" a placeholder into each movie directory and rename using the parent folder name.

For TV shows this isn't practical as there can be hundreds of episodes per show. I would like to know if there is a way to duplicate the folder/file structure of a tv show, with many episodes under a single folder, using the same placeholder file.

To reiterate, the ultimate goal is to take a placeholder file eg. "placeholder720p.mkv" and use this file to recreate the source directory with the same filenames. So in the end I will have a folder that looks identical to the source, but consists of this placeholder file duplicated over and over. Also, there are non-alphanumeric characters and spaces in the filenames to be duplicated.

Running exchange 2013 & having problems with a Mac client, running Outlook 2011.
I keep getting the message 'The folder cannot be synchronized with the server'. There is an option to empty the cache, but is that on the whole inbox or a folder inside it, as this user has a whole lot of them. There is a warning on the empty cache page, so I am wary to run that, fearing that it may delete emails, folders, etc.
Is there a way to see if it is a specific folder causing the problem?
Don't know if this is related, but the first folder in there has a ' at the start of the name, I'm assuming so it will be a the top of his list of folders.
Could that be part of the problem?
Trying to replicate issue on my mac & after a few attempts, I'll get the message 'Outlook must be closed because an error occurred', which he is not getting.
Mailbox is 7.1 GB, if that matters, either.

Hi Peers,

I need your advice and guidance.

I have an excel database called Master-Document that I need to import several hundred excel files in a folder into.

Unfortunately, this needs to be ran on a Mac and I am no expert on using Macs.

Example Import Files

Row 5 to row 8 starting at Column E are column headers. (highlighted In RED on the example documents).

Each time a document is imported into the master Document the above is added as a new column at the end of the last column.

I then need to match the imported data row to the store row in the list.

The solution that the exports come out of the store numbers column is stored as a text and not a number.

    Any help appreciated on this.

    For some odd reason, one of my Mac clients started having problems connecting to my 2016 remote desktop server. Getting a message that says;

We couldn’t connect to the remote PC. This might be due to an expired password. If this keeps happening, contact you network administrator for assistance.
    Error code: 0x207

Password had no reason to be expired, but I changed anyway & low & behold i worked.
Now, same user is trying to get back in & getting the same message.
    WTFF?!?!?

Hi there. On my WordPress site, we are using BeaverBuilder and we have a plugin called PowerPack Addon installed and are using the Modal Popup module. We also are using Foobox Pro installed. On this page https://ccdenver.org/engage/ the video modal popup automatically pops up and starts to play the video in Firefox on a PC. However, on a Mac the popup modal opens but the video hangs. Any ideas on how to get that to autoplay like it does on a PC? Also, I have ?rel=0&autoplay=1 at the end of the YouTube string.

    Any ideas experts?

I'm experiencing issues when I attempt to set up an exchange email account on a Windows 10 computer and a MacBook. I was able to successfully set up the email account on an Iphone and an Ipad. Exchange is running on an SBS2011 server.  After running the Microsoft Connectivity test, I received the following result:

The Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer is attempting to build certificate chains for certificate CN=remote.xxxx.com.

How to I How do I build the certificate chain to include the required intermediate certificate?

In my downloads, a question mark in a box is followed by hundreds of automatic two-byte downloads. I move them to trash and empty trash, but the question mark cannot be deleted. Yesterday it downloaded over three thousand times before I used Safari and noticed it. The Safari screen comes up with a larger-than-icon-size black and white Safari logo, which repeats across the page at a diagonal, and starts the downloading again. Can I uninstall Safari and reinstall a fresh copy somehow? I've run Malware Bytes and it says the system is clean. But it seems infected to me. Any suggestions? I use Firefox for work, and those are the only two browsers I have on my laptop.
