A mainframe operating system is networking software infrastructure that allows a mainframe computer to run programs, connect linked machines, and process complex numerical and data-driven tasks. Modern mainframe design is generally defined by redundant internal engineering, extensive input-output facilities, strict backward compatibility with older software, high hardware and computational utilization rates and high stability and reliability. Well-known operating systems include IBM z/OS, z/VM, zTPF, z/VSE, OS/390, and their predecessors, along with MCP for Unisys ClearPath, and NonStop OS/Guardian on HP/Tandem, and questions regarding the IBM midrange operating system called IBM i, OS/400, and i5/OS.

This is a unique request...I have a file that I FTP to a main frame and normally if the the record length of each record in the text file is say for example 85 I would just put:

quote site lrecl = 85

This usually works and my data is NOT Trunacated...however I have a very unique file that one of our clients gets that does NOT have any CRLF in the file...it is one continuous string of data making it impossible to put an lrecl = ??

How can I get around this?

Can any one please explain about microprocessors? I remember when i started working on computers, I use XT machines and GWBasic in dos environment. What is the role of microprocessors in the field of information technology.

Thanks

Can any one please explain the difference between the old operating systems vs the one we are using now a days. I think 20 years ago there was no concept of virtual memory, information protection and security, scheduling and multiprogramming, multithreading, OOP designs, virtual machines etc. What is multiprocessor  and multicore? What is the role of client/server model in the operating system design? What is new in windows 7 and 8? Why we use Microsoft operating systems if there are other companies which are selling their products like unix, linux and IBM machines?

Hello Folks!

I have an OnBase application and I'm trying to establish an ODBC connection to MAS90 database. I have created a generic 32 bit ODBC source using MAS 90 32-bit ODBC Driver. The issue is, I get a prompt every time I perform a query using this ODBC source even when I have provided a default Company Code, Default UserID, and password.

I'm new to MAS90 and would appreciate any help to avoid this prompt all the time.

Thanks.

I have an 8203-E4A system that I just purchased a network card for (feature 5623).  It is a dual-port Ethernet adapter.  I currently have the system up and running in production with an existing 5623 card in it.  I am using both ports (one for LAN access, other for Operations Console connectivity).  I purchased the second card for failover.  I wanted to swap these cards, so that I can verify that the one I just purchased works.  I am unsure as to how that will work as far as my connectivity to the system is concerned.

     In the networking realm, is a POWER system like Microsoft (ie., I can change the card and the system will tie the new hardware to the existing ETHERNET Device Description), or like UNIX (network configuration is tied to a MAC address so when I change the card I will lose connectivity [console & LAN] to the system?  Has anyone done this before?

Anyone know anything about the mainframes?  Are there any tools exist for migrations or connections to a regular Windows PC?
I thought the technology is dead.  However, some people say otherwise and growing..
Please point me to the right direction.

Hi experts,
I need to only migrate data (tables + data) from a IBM DB2 database TO Oracle database.

Oracle database version: 11.2.0.3  (operating system Linux)
IBM DB2 database version: 10.1  (operating system z/OS) database size 300 GB

Unfortunately it seems that I can not use the Oracle SQL Developer Migration tool, because it is not compatible with DB2 running on IBM z/OS.
Oracle say that the latest version of SQL*Developer can be used to migrate from DB2 but only when running on Unix, Linux and Windows platforms, but not currently support migrating DB2 running on IBM z/OS.

It seems that the only possible ways to perform the migration, from DB2 on z/OS to Oracle, are:

Heterogeneous systems
Oracle Transparent Gateway
Oracle SQL Loader

I need to know if someone can tell me step by step how to do at least one of them and/or if there are other ways to migrate.

Thanks in advance!

Hello All,

I urgently need some help. I have an IBM power i 7.1 system in my environment right now.

I am trying to access the folders and files on that system using Windows.

I just got a new ERP system called S2K from a company called VAI and they store all there files on the power system.

Some of my users can connect just find to the shared IFS folder on that IBM system and other users can not.

I need some help on what to do, what settings do I need to ensure I have configured correctly on the Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 computers.

I do not have IBM Access for windows installed on any of these computers but mines.

Please help.

Hi,

My domain server is 2003 and my clients are XP.

I want to lock the the PC after a set amount of inactivity. So say, after 10 mins of inactivity  the computer would lock and require the user to re-insert their password. I wanted the users to manually lock their PCs if they left their PC, but this did not happen, so therefore I need to sort something at the back end.

Would group policy the solution? if so can someone explain to a novice how to set this?

When I try to connect to my database server via remote desktop, I insert my username and password and it goes to loading personal settings but it goes no further. All I have is a blue screen with a cursor and no desktop. I can log in on to the console with no problems. Looks like the sessions are still active on the server but i can not forcibly log them off

In terminal services manager under the server name  =

RDP-TCP listener
Console
Down 1
Down 3
Down 4
Down 2

Under the users tab  there is only one (the console session). Under the sessions tab it lists the sessions listed above. If I try and reset on it States  - Session (ID 1) reset failed (Error 7024)  - the requested operation cannot be completed because the terminal connection is currently busy processing a connect, disconnect, reset or delete operation.

I cannot connect via Remote desktop only via the console. I have used the MSTSC /console switch but the issue remains.

This happened before, I rebooted the server and it cleared the sessions. I do not want to make it a habit of having to reboot this server.

How do I solve this issue? Can I re-start the terminal services service, will this clear the sessions? And if so, what's the implications of re-starting this service.

Hello,

I have a little issue with mfsort (COBOL) utility.

Here is the code (in UNIX OS) :

SORTIN=£FI
    export SORTIN
SORTOUT=$TMP/T120OUT."$nupro"
    export SORTOUT

echo "SIGN-EBCDIC
SORT FIELDS (
00005,00009,CH,A,
00014,00050,CH,A,
00064,00020,CH,A)
RECORD (V, 4,4004)
USE $SORTIN ORG (SQ) RECORD (V,4,4004)
GIVE $SORTOUT ORG (SQ) RECORD (V,4,4004)
" 1>$TMP/NRB120."$nupro"
mfsort take $TMP/NRB120."$nupro"
    CODE_RETOUR=$?
    unset SORTIN
    unset SORTOUT
    rm $TMP/NRB120*."$nupro"

Input file is BORD_GEL_ZZZ_Suppr has only one line :
000000000GEL         ZZZ               0                                       *EZO00                      A0

Output Error is :
SORT013U: I/O error on dataset '/opt/hrdev/file/BORD_GEL_ZZZ_Suppr'
SORT014U: Status = 9/139
SORT020U: SORT(EXTSM) failed - sort engine status = 9/139

What's wrong in mfsort parameters ?

Thanks for your feedback.

Wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. I have several spool files in an outq  called P5 that a user would like transferred to a folder called Audit 2013 in the IFS.  I am looking through the System I Navigator client but cannot find a way to copy or move these files.  Drag/drop does not work,  nor am I able to Copy/Paste. Is there another way to do this?

I am using System I Navigator V7R1 Mod 0.

thanks

I'm trying to find some examples of C# code that uses the ConnectDirectSdk library to talk to and send information (processes) to mainframe computers. I'm particularly stuck on what value to send, or how to set the value that I need to send for the Node.Hold parameter when attempting to execute a .Submit procedure. Any examples of this out there? I can't find any code examples.

I am doing a data conversion from VMS to Windows.  I know a little about VMS the VMS command line but not much.  I have an IT background.  I am having this problem on several different VMS servers where I am trying to move GBs of data off it during close of business so I can convert it after hours and have them up on Windows Monday morning.

FTP transfers are exceptionally slow at several of the  sites ( like 1 MB every 10 min)  I don't think this is due to anything external to the VMS like switches or cabling as we have swapped this all out.

I have the same probem using ftp client or ftp in DOS.  I have an FTP server on the VMS and on Windows and while it seems to be a little faster to push the data to the windows server its not that much faster.

How do I speed up FTP speeds as this is a huge problem for us and holding up several large projects?

I have a question about using DSN1COPY to restore partitioned tablespaces. My question is, since I need DBID, OBID and PSID by way of OBIDXLAT, how and where do I get the OBID and PSID for each of a tablespace partitions.

I am comfortable with getting DBID, OBID, and PSID for a non-partitioned tablespace and need help with working with partitioned tablespace and DSN1COPY.

Can someone give me a quick step-wise tutorial on what I need to do? I'll be mighty grateful to anyone who can help me out.

Thanks

Hi all,

I am desperately seeking answers to this DB2 table access problem.  I have defined the following ROLE and Trusted Context objects in my DB2 z/OS environment:

CREATE ROLE ROLE1;
GRANT SELECT ON TABLE TABLE_NAME TO ROLE1;

CREATE TRUSTED CONTEXT TC_SELECT
       BASED UPON CONNECTION USING SYSTEM AUTHID USERID_1
       ATTRIBUTES (ADDRESS '9.30.131.203')
       DEFAULT ROLE ROLE1
       ENABLE
       WITH USE FOR USERID_1 WITH AUTHENTICATION;

Using query monitor, when my user USERID_1 execute his program, I find that access is denied and with the following SQLCODE -551 - "<authorization-ID>" does not have the privilege to perform operation "<operation>" on object "<name>", SQLCODE=-551, SQLSTATE=42501.

The application is being executed from a Windows Server 2008 to access a table on DB2 9 on Z/OS machine.

 Can someone please point out what I am doing wrong or what I am missing with my setup? Do I need any other GRANT in this scenario?

Thank in advance for your help...
