A mainframe operating system is networking software infrastructure that allows a mainframe computer to run programs, connect linked machines, and process complex numerical and data-driven tasks. Modern mainframe design is generally defined by redundant internal engineering, extensive input-output facilities, strict backward compatibility with older software, high hardware and computational utilization rates and high stability and reliability. Well-known operating systems include IBM z/OS, z/VM, zTPF, z/VSE, OS/390, and their predecessors, along with MCP for Unisys ClearPath, and NonStop OS/Guardian on HP/Tandem, and questions regarding the IBM midrange operating system called IBM i, OS/400, and i5/OS.

I was wondering how HACMP works for two nodes cluster? It uses any fencing methods for shared storage? Is it mandatory to have a quorum disk?

Thanks!

Hi all,

I wonder if I can get your thoughts on what it takes to be very effective DB2 Production Support DBA/Specialist. What I am really after is the little word of wisdom from those who have been in the "DB2 production support pit" - seen the many vexing issues that can rear it's ugly head in DB2 operational environment and have solved issue. What can a DB2 newbie learn from you - the how to's, gotcha's and How to organize the work day. How do you breakdown or categorize the many areas of DB2 operational support and when, how and why  do you do it the way you do?
Say, for example, you have a space issue such as tablespace/table full? What do you do? Call storage people/system people or do you extend it yourself? I am looking for commentary on how different DBA will go about resolving issue such as the "How to's, space issue, utility failures, program abends (-805s), tablespace restricted states, etc

Any and all comments will be very much appreciated. Ask any question for clarification if you like...

Hi,

I'm not familiar with mainframe systems or cobol computed items, so I hope that I'm able to explain my problem exactly. Current situation is, that I receive a mainframe exported file with  mixed fields of the formats comp, comp3 and string. I've got a c#-class from an ex-colleague which translates the comp and comp3-fields into strings to import this into a sql-database.

The new task is the other way around. I will receive a pipe seperated csv file and I've to convert this file into the format I receveid before. So I have only strings and for some of the fields I've to convert them into comp or comp3 format.

I googled a lot but everything I found didn't work correctly.

So my question is this possible?

Thanks in advance

Hi wpm,

I was wondering if there's a risk involved in altinst_rootvg removal and rootvg extend?
How should I do this?

Many Thanks!!!

Techies--
Oracle and SQL server have a concept of variables that are table formatted recordsets. Does DB2 have a similar concept? If not, what strategy would I use to do this?

Example:

In my .NET C# program I've called a stored procedure that has a table variable named @myTable,  the columns for this are: employee_id, FirstName, LastName, TotalTime, weDate. Let's say there are 1,000 rows.

From this stored procedure, I want to pass the @myTable variable to a stored procedure residing on a linked DB2 server.  The DB2 stored procedure only cares about the employee_id and the TotalTime for the same 1,000 rows.

How do I ship that value over without shipping 1,000 rows one row at a time by paramaterizing the elements.

I'm trying to access a AIX machine via websm.

I did: /usr/websm/bin/wsmserver -enable on the server, and the port 9090 listen and it's open on AIX machine.

Still, the only output I receive from websm page( http://IP:9090) is:

Hi wmp,

I was wondering, where AIX keeps his logs?

For example, I'm not able to see /var/adm/messages.

Also, dmesg is not available in AIX?

2. What terminal should I have in my Linux distro for enabling smitty functions like F3 and so?

Thanks!

I executed the following tasks below to copy a table from one LIB (CRPDTA) to a backup LIB (TBLBACKUP).

However, after running this I would now like to verify the records in the table in the backup LIB to make sure everything went ok. But it fails when I try to run the table count.

Here is the tasks I took to backup/copy the table:

Save data in files before generating tables, if there are table generation requests.
- Using OWPKGBLD menu on OSK3, run option 25.
- Enter the following information:
  From file  . . . . . . . . . . . > F551201Z
    Library  . . . . . . . . . . .     CRPDTA
  To file  . . . . . . . . . . . .      F551201Z
    Library  . . . . . . . . . . .     TBLBACKUP
  From member  . . . . . . . . . .   *FIRST
  To member or label . . . . . . .   *FIRST
  Replace or add records . . . . .   *NONE
  Create file  . . . . . . . . . .   *YES
  Print format . . . . . . . . . .   *CHAR

It said the copy was successful.

But when I try to check the records by running a record count command I get this:

                              Enter SQL Statements

 Type SQL statement, press Enter.
        select count(*) from crpdta/f551201z
      SELECT statement run complete.
    >
                                         …

I just need to run a simple record count on a table on an AS400. I'm running the command:

select count (*) from crpdta.f551201z

But that command is failing. I know the file exists. So I just want to make sure I"m stating the command correctly.

Can someone let me know real quick for me?

See below.

Thanks!RRecord Count

Hi,

I'm having a VIOS (LPAR) that I'd like to fully backup before installing some packages in it. I'd like to be 100% sure that I can restore it to the actual state (including memory processes - just like in vmware esx - the memory snapshot option).

Is that possible?

A BIG THANK YOU!

Hi,

I'm trying to understand the ODM concept, so some questions raise:

1. How can I determine if ODM helds some old, unused entries related to some hardware that doesn't exist?

2. How can I delete an object from ODM? Is it safe to do that?

3. ODM should be updated manually or automatically? When ODM requires manual intervention?

Thank you!

Hi,

Two questions please:

1. Is there any risk in increasing the root lv on a AIX system if the vg that's part of has additional free space?

Is chfs -a size=+1G / enough?

Will the system boot after this operation?

2. is there any risk if I ran by mistake lvextend before chfs on a AIX 5L server? Would that affect files on that LV? Lvextend actually didn't increase the file system and after that I run chfs.

Thank you!

Hi all,

I am having problem creating "SERVER" for DB2 federated replication and I have some questions about the create server parameters. Please note my questions followed by the SQL that I am using and the error message that I received.
My questions are:

(a) Is it absolutely required that "AUTHORIZATION" and "PASSWORD" be specified to be able to create a DB2 SERVER for federated replication?

(b) Is the "AUTHORIZATION" and "PASSWORD"  information to come from the mainframe, as in our case, or is it to come from the client/server side?

Any help will be highly appreciated...

Can somebody please shed some light on mainframes.

What is its primary purpose?
How big is the machine? And why is it big? Is it because it has a bigger processor, bigger hard drive etc?
What kind of OS is used on it?
How much does it cost?
What kind of Databases can be used with MainFrames? Oracle or Sql Server?

Thanks!

Hi. We have an IBM mainframe with AIX 5.3 on it. We would like to upgrade to 6.1. Is there anything to be aware of here / instructions for upgrading? We've been provided a download link from IBM to the new 6.1 OS.

Apparently, though I am using the paperclip (attach apparatus) it is not actually attaching so I will take your advice, Tom, and paste that along with the original question below.

We have a as an example a file with 10 records.  The first display of this file is at the top of the Below Document which is at this time considered an unsorted file.  On this below display the second group is that same file sorted using the control card SORT FIELDS=(9,12,CH,D), in essence sorting the key field in descending order.  The third group takes the same unsorted file at the top and using the control card SORT FIELDS=(9,12,CH,A) gives you an Ascending sort.  The fourth groups is what I actually need..  I have been told there is a way to get there using an Alternate Sort Sequence in the JCL.  Please assist.  Below are the examples
