A mainframe operating system is networking software infrastructure that allows a mainframe computer to run programs, connect linked machines, and process complex numerical and data-driven tasks. Modern mainframe design is generally defined by redundant internal engineering, extensive input-output facilities, strict backward compatibility with older software, high hardware and computational utilization rates and high stability and reliability. Well-known operating systems include IBM z/OS, z/VM, zTPF, z/VSE, OS/390, and their predecessors, along with MCP for Unisys ClearPath, and NonStop OS/Guardian on HP/Tandem, and questions regarding the IBM midrange operating system called IBM i, OS/400, and i5/OS.

Hi Experts

Could you explain how was the mainframes programs strategy to deal with low hardware resouces, decades ago, when developing banking applications like checking accounts, legal accounting, etc. a typical area with huge amount of data.

I guess there was one computer designated to treat each big agency data and then one other only to sumarize. Am I right?
Could you give details, mainly if you lived this situation?

Thanks in advance!

Helpful to verify reports of your own downtime, or to double check a downed website you are trying to access.

Hi,

As part of a project, we have created a File Path in the Machine and tried to connect from Mainframe to that destination(Path), it is giving Network path not found.

However we have thought to restart the FTPSITE will resolve this issue but there is an outage if we did a restart to other clients who are connecting to the destination.

Please suggest is there way to complete this issue without FTPSITE restart.

Thanks for your help in advance.
Venkatesh.

Using FTP and QUOTE RCMD, does anyone know of a way to create an input variable? This variable would be used to call and execute an IBM Supplied API on a remote As/400 system.

Just got Carol Woodsbury latest IBM i Security book: a quick browse showed
OS/400 uses ftp (it has telnet & ftp servers in it).

I've been hearing for the past ten years that ftp should not be used anymore
from security point of view as data as well as credentials of ftp are not
encrypted; likewise for telnet

Q1:
So under what circumstances is ftp's use still justified for OS/400?
Or there are legacy IBM products that require ftp & if so which ones?

Q2:
Is it possible to sftp/scp for OS/400?  From the index of the book, there's
no mention of sftp/scp, so I'm curious if sftp/scp is the way to go for
OS/400?  Or there's 3rd parties  sftp servers out there for OS/400 that
we ought to install?

I have recently installed Anti-Virus scanning for the Netserver (IFS) portion on my IBM i.  I am running IBM i v7r2.  The Anti-Virus scans are making the number of journal receiver entries increase exponentially. Auditing events are configured as listed: attention events, authorization failure, object creation/deletion/restore, program adoption, security tasks, service tasks, system integrity violation, system management.  I'm not auditing objects in QTEMP, & object auditing isn't active.

The AV scanner is producing a lot of entries of the following types: CA (auth change), LD (directory link/unlink/lookup), CO (create object), AD (auditing attribute change), & DO (delete operation).

My question is: can I specify exceptions to auditing/journaling?  By job name, user profile, or any other parameter that would allow me to specify that I don't want the AV scanner activity being journaled.

Thanks in advance.

Occasionally, we have a spool file that will have a 1* (asterisk) under the Total Pages of a spool file.  When this happens the printer stops printing.  You cannot view or print the spool file.  As i said it only happens once in a while on print files that typically print without issue.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this?

Thank you,
Tammie

[Webinar] Cloud and Mobile-First Strategy

Maybe you’ve fully adopted the cloud since the beginning. Or maybe you started with on-prem resources but are pursuing a “cloud and mobile first” strategy. Getting to that end state has its challenges. Discover how to build out a 100% cloud and mobile IT strategy in this webinar.

I have a list of Mainframe libraries -- and I have to identify which ones are in PDSE format.

Is there a command that I can use in batch that will show this?

I have procedures to run LDR and LU commands in batch -- and hoping to find a command to identify library types.

Thanks for the help,

On the IBM AS/400 where are the attributes of a file stored?  Do they reside with the file?

Is there a command to display the attributes of a file that is stored on a tape?

I have been running windows 8.1 and the other day I downloaded  windows 10, and created a partition on my hard drive and then installed windows 10 on that partition.  everything went fine, except that now I cannot get back into windows 8.1.  When windows 10 starts up it gives me now option to go to windows 8.1.  I have had duel os's on the same hard drive in the past and I have always had the option to choose which os to load to.
I can see the partition that windows 8.1 is on and all my files are on that partition, so I know that I have not wiped that partition.
Any help would be appreciated,  Thanks.

here is how my scenario is:

I have two subnets:  192.168.3.x  &  192.168.150.x

when I access the website from 150.x there is no problem.    When I tried to access the website from 3.x, it wouldn't go.   My objective is to ensure both 150.x and 3.x users can access the site.

the website is originally created and reside on 150.x

Hi Experts

I have a scenario where in the there are 2 receivers to which the file from source directory needs to be sent and the receiver is determined based on the timestamp on the file or more precisely depending on the day, and the same filename scehma is used in source to send to both the receivers.

FYI, The middleware I am using provides a file adapter which has options to include direcotry paths, include shell scripts to run before and after the file processing. I can use this File adapters and both sender and receiver sides. All I need is to finalize a logic for this approach and implement it in iSeries shell script.

For example if the source file in /src directory is FileName12022014 this needs to be sent to Receiver1 /rec1 directory only ----and in the same way all the files which are placed untill the 6th day in this case FileName12072014 should also be placed only in receiver1 directory /rec1. But the FileName12082014 which is the 7th day file should be sent to both the Receiver 1 and Receiver 2. I see we wont be able to achieve this without the shell script in the file adapter, but would appreciate suggestions on the best way to achieve this.

Hi,
Do you have any ideas to execute one .jar file, which has been created in Win 7 environment, within AS 400 OS? How to upload the relevant file to AS 400 from Win 7?

Dear experts.
I am connecting via a ODBC connection to a IBM Mainframe Datacom server.
Now the problem is, that the Datacom server is not the most recent version. Updating unfortunately is not an option.
Although a fix: RO40776 exists
Apparently some MSAccess SQL Statistics command, when querying the MainFrame DB via ODBC crashes the Datacom server.
ANY Idea how I can disable those MSAccess SQL Statistic commands?
Many thanks for your help
