Microsoft Lync Server

Microsoft Lync Server (renamed Skype for Business Server in 2015) is a real-time communications server software that provides infrastructure for enterprise instant messaging, presence, VoIP, ad hoc and structured conferences (audio, video, and web), and PSTN connectivity through a third-party gateway or SIP trunk. These features are available within and between organizations, and with external users on the public internet or standard phones (on bpth PSTN and SIP trunking).

i am in the process on migration from exchange 2010 to 2016 and lync to SBB 2015  whats the proper way to decommission the exchange 2010 and the lync server
Hi Everyone

I have a problem to Publish the Topology for our Skype For Business Environment. Whenever i try that I'm getting following error:
System.Management.Automation.CmdletInvocationException: Cannot continue because Active Directory has not been prepared yet. ---> Microsoft.Rtc.Management.Deployment.ActiveDirectoryException: Cannot continue because Active Directory has not been prepared yet.

We have at the moment a Lync 2013 Enteprise infrastructure and since a while now even if i go to the Lync Deployment Wizard or SfB deployment Wizard it tells me always under "Prepare Active Directory" partial.

However if i run the Prepare domain  option it all comes back as success.

I also opened now a Premier support with Microsoft and at the moment we are going through it all permissions for RTCUniversalUsersAdmins. the account im using to deply SfB is a member of :
Domain Admins
Enteprise Admins
Schema Admins
and also …
Hi Everyone.

I need someones a opinion if someone had the chance to test it. Does skype For Business Front End Server works with Lync Edge.

The reason why I'm asking is that we are planning a Domain Migration minimizing the disturbance for users.
At the moment on Both domains have Lync 2013. As part of the migration i want to add on one site a new Site in the Topology for SfB.

Unfortunately both companies on both domains are owned by one company and they work very closely so there is no option for Federation disruption. That's why I can't for example add on the destination topology the SIP domain the Source domain users are using as this will break Federation for the Destination Domain users.

Thats why my plan is to

1. Add a new Site in the Destination Domain
2. Add a SfB servers
3. Move users using temporary a SIp address the Destination Domain owns
4. After all users will be moved add the Source Sip address to the Destination topology, together with configuring all the required External DNS records.

But when i started to write the Plan it got em thinking how I can configure the Edge Server for SfB without affecting the existing Lync environment in the Destination Domain, and not affecting the Edge server on the Source domain.
This is where I'm wondering if SfB front End server works with Lync Edge so i can use it temporary as a Bridge until all users will be moved from Source Domain and i can start repointing all External records to new server.

Hi Experts,

when we setup outlook with the onmicrosoft.com account, then we can see a problem with lync and skype.
The conversation history is not present.

Do you know a way to edit the outlook profile to get back the conversation history ?
Skype for business 2015 Yealink T48S | Trusted Certificate
I need assistance with phones we recently purchased, all T48S handsets with Skype for business firmware.
I have tried all 3 latest available firmware and stuck with this version as it offered a simpler login screen for users.
Phones register correctly for as long as the the trusted certificate is not present.
Periodically the handsets will populate with a CA certificate on line 1 even though everything is set to disabled below and then the users are unable to sign into the phones.

i did some googling and found this command but its only relevant for SKype for Business online

What is causing the phones to download the internal root domain CA certificate?
We have Skype for Business Server 2015 Frontend + EDGE server + KEMP as a reverse proxy.
What settings need to be done if we want to add a second additional sip-domain. This domain should also, like the first, be accessible from outside (PCs and mobile clients) and be able to exchange messages with classic Skype.

I imagine the process like this:

The first domain - domain1.com. Additional second domain - domain2.com

1) Add domain2.com in the Skype4B topology settings
2) Add domain2.com zone and all required A and SRV records to the internal DNS server.
3) Add external A and SRV entries in the domain2.com control panel.
4) Publish a new internal certificate through the certificate authority AD. Replace the new internal certificate on Skype4B Frontend server.
5) About the EDGE server comes two options for implementation: 1st - create a new EDGE server for domain2.com and add it to the Skype4B topology; 2nd - create a multi-domain wildcard certificate which include domain1.com and domain2.com and replace it on the current EDGE server.
6) What to do with reverse proxy (KEMP)? Expand a new KEMP or import created multi-domain wildcard certificate containing domain1.com and domain2.com on the current KEMP?
Dear all,

I would like to know how to add a user to an exchange distribution group by matching the user's from a text file. My text file is as following

My current powershell is as following

$Users = Import-Csv "C:\Scripts\Users.csv"
foreach ($User in $Users){
$member = $user.email
group =$user.group

if($group -like "CertainExchangeGroup"){
Add-DistributionGroupMember -Identity  "CertainGroup@domain.com" -Member $member{
Write-Host $member has been added to $group -ForegroundColor Green}

At the moment this doesn't work and gives the following error
A positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument '
    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidArgument: (:) [Add-DistributionGroupMember], ParameterBindingException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : PositionalParameterNotFound,Add-DistributionGroupMember
    + PSComputerName

I would appreciate any help to fix this
Thank you
Dear Experts,

I am wondering if it's possible to modify a CSV output to get certain characters removed and get the output into a useful CSV file which can be used for another script.

The powershell cmdlet is the following

The output I have is as following:

"ResponseGroupName","as@domain.com, dh@domain.com, de@domain.com, da@domain.com, de@domain.com, har@domain.com, nsh@domain.com, shba@domain.com, sm@domain.com"

What I would like to have is as following

Name, AgentsByUri
ResponseGroupName, as@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, dh@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, de@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, da@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, de@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, har@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, nsh@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, shba@domain.com
ResponseGroupName, sm@domain.com

I tried the following script to do this but it didn't work.
(Get-Content C:\Scripts\Users.csv) -replace ',',"`r`n" | Set-Content C:\Scripts\Users.csv -Force

Skype for business/Lync 2013

We purchased a Skype for business system about a year ago and are still having alot of problems with it.  The service provider seems to be getting no where in resolving them.  the biggest problem is hunt groups and park service being very slow.  heres a bit of background:

Yealink T46G deskphones connect directly to SFB server
Gigaset cordeless phones connecting via SIP connect to AudioCodes SPS server
4 loud ringers connecting to AudioCodes Loud ringer

the problem i have is when a hunt group is called it takes about 5 seconds before the phones even start to ring, then when the call is picked up it takes another 5-12 seconds to connect during which time the hold music cuts off so the caller gets silence.  usually they think the line has cut off so they hang up.  then once the call is connected it is then a further 3-4 seconds before the audio actually connects.  this is causing a major problem and to pickup another persons ringing phones takes even longer.

if a call comes through on a DDI howeer the pickup is instant.

it only seems to relate to calls going through the park serivce.  does anyone have any suggestion as to what I can check/change to improve this as, as i mentioned, the service provider is getting nowhere with it.
We are having a strange issue with our Skype for Business.
Its been running just fine for sometime now but we have some external clients that are having an issue with our Skype ids.
What's happening is that we can send them a skype message and they receive it, but when the try to reply back to us, it eventually times out for them, and we don't get their reply.
Also when they bring up their list of other clients including ours, ours show up as status, Presence Unknown
Does anyone know what I can check to see why our IDs would be appearing to them as Presence Unknown?
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to install the Microsoft Lync Web App Plugin.  I get to a point during the process where I'm prompted to run the plug in, in order to get audio and video.  However, as the progress bar gets to about 90% complete a dialogue box generates and indicates the "The specified account already exists", then closes and the users is never able to reach their meeting.

Here are some details surrounding the setup -

  • The device is a Dell laptop
  • The OS is a WIN 7 64-bit platform
  • Running Microsoft Office 2013
  • This is a domain environment
  • The user is a standard user on the laptop
  • I, as an admin, have installed the Skype Meetings App as I can see it listed in Control Panel
  • I've also got the latest version of Silver Light installed
  • I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the Skype Meetings App a couple times and get the same dialogue box - Account Already Exists
  • I've cleared the cache and history
  • We don't run Office 365

I'm a bit stumped.  Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help.
Hi Experts,

One of my customers is having some trouble with her Skype conferences.

When joining by phone and entering the conference id, the automated system states, ”Sorry, I cant find a meeting with that number.”

Any ideas as to why this may be happening with her conferences and what I may do to do troubleshoot?

My customer runs a SFB on prem with several from end servers and back end servers. Exchange 2016 with several mailbox servers in a DAG. Active directory single forest/single domain with multiple sites.
Hello Experts,

One of my customers is running into an issue with her skype it keeps showing her as out of office even though she has no auto reply setup in her outlook and her OWA

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

My customer runs a SFB on prem with several from end servers and back end servers. Exchange 2016 with several mailbox servers in a DAG. Active directory single forest/single domain with multiple sites.
Hi Experts,

I do have a user in my organization [SFB on prem] with several FE servers and MBX in a DAG 2016 with an unknown presence status on IM

Troubleshooting done so far

I remote into user’s PC, clear SFB cache client, outlook profile recreated, delete OAB files, reboot computer, no luck
User tried from another computer, same thing.
Fixed the discrepancy with SIP proxy address attribute
Any ideas?  What I missed here? Her account was updated yesterday, so OAB replication should not be an issue here.
Hi Everyone

I was asked to look into a Task which I'm not sure if it's possible. I have a Lync Server 2013 Enterprise.

Is there a way to set a few users with a specific policy which will allow them to Contact internally only certain users, and Block to Contact anyone else.

This Solution can contain a new Pool in Topology or I'm wondering if there is an option I can achieve them under one Topology.

Also Would be there options like that in Later Skype For Business version.

I need little help with renewing 3rd party certificate on Skype for Business 2015 server.
As per pictures attached, i want to renew only that certificate (SIP, since it is 3rd party and all others are from internal CA), and when i go to Request with Advanced option, and populate everything i end up with csr, that has a common name of webdir.<domain>.com, in stead of sip.<domain>.com (as it is atm).

So, the question is how to renew this certificate but to have CN of sip.<domain>.com, when there is no option to define CN?

Can I use maybe exchange server, generate CSR there, then just delete it after i get new cert, or something like that?

Hello Team

I need some advice regarding Lync 2013 Edge Server and 3 External NIC addresses.

I want to change in our Company the Edge Server Configuration to use instead 1 Public facing NIC Card, 3.

It's so far I see a recommendation from Microsoft to have for each Service a separate IP.

I have some problems when I try to configure that and hope you can point me  if I'm doing something wrong:

Infrastructure Summarize:
(Ip addresses are only examples)

I've one IP address facing LAN

I got now 3 IP addresses facing Public internet: (Access Edge) (Webconf)

For the above addresses I have seperate Public addresses assigned and NAT'ed <> <> <>

External DNS:
I created one DNS entry for sipwebconf.domain pointing to, and DNS record to point to av.domain

Certificate contains required webconf SAN. FOr Test i also included the AV.

Whenever I setup In the topology of the 3 IP addresses, Audio or Video is not working if someone externally joins a Meeting.

Peer To Peer connection with Federated partners work fine.

Everything works fine If I use 1 IP address and the web conference service set as 444.

How I'm setting up the Topology:
In the Access Edge service as DNS I'm using my sip address and the IP
In the Webconferening as DNS im putting …

I have been presented with a problem. I have been requested to add a custom Active Directory attribute value to all Lync contact Cards. A large number of managers that have Active directory accounts have the custom attribute "secretary" along with the value OU location to their secretaries Active Directory Object. . Can that Active Directory custom attribute (called secretary) be updated in Lync Server 2010 and reflected on the Skype for Business contact Card? Can the ABS Configuration Tool be used for this task can a custom attribute be added to it.
Current State:
1 Forest/1 Domain
AD Connect to Office 365 (syncing password hashes)
All on-premises Lync and Exchange servers have been decommissioned in the environment

Most users have attributes like this populated - looks like this from old on-premises (However, many are synced to 365):

Q: Can I clear the above attributes without issue?

The reason I ask is I would like to clear the above attributes when I implement the following changes (which is the actual project at hand):

UserPrincipalName attribute
from foo@contoso.com to foo@fabrikam.com

Mail attribute
from foo@contoso.com to foo@fabrikam.com

ProxyAddresses attribute - the PrimarySMTPAddress
from SMTP:foo@contoso.com to SMTP:foo@fabrikam.com

ProxyAddresses attribute - the old PrimarySMTPAddress will become the secondary
from SMTP:foo@contoso.com to smtp:foo@contoso.com

ProxyAddresses attribute - the SIP Address
from SIP:foo@contoso.com to SIP:foo@fabrikam.com
Hello Experts

I have a question concerning Lync Hybrid with O365 DNS record

I working with a client and this is the current configuration of his public dns:

access  A IP Adress of EDGE Server

_sip._tls.mydomain  SRV access.mydomain   0 0 443 access.mydomain
_sipfederationtls._tcp.mydomain           0 0  5061 access.mydomain

While reading a couple of documents i read about a sip entry instead . like here : http://blog.insidelync.com/2016/08/dns-records-in-a-skype-for-business-hybrid-deployment/

so for my Hybrid setup to work DNS wise should i recreate all in sip or  i should

sip A IP Adress Edge Server

_sip._tls.mydomain  SRV sip.mydomain   0 0 443 sip.mydomain
_sipfederationtls._tcp.mydomain           0 0  5061 sip.mydomain
Dear All,

We are running Microsoft Lync Server 2013 Hosting Pack with the latest Cumulative Update KB 2809243 (version 8308.992), published in July 2017.

Currently, and since February 2018, all our customers are facing an issue with the mobile client for iOS  (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skype-for-business/id605841731?mt=8) and more specifically with push notifications.

Incoming calls are not pushed to the mobile client anymore, even with the “Background App Refresh” option enabled.

Back in November 2017, with the App version 6.17.3, push notifications were still working correctly, but the version 6.18.1.x deployed in February 2018 broke the service.

I still have an iPhone 7 with App version 6.17.3 (Nov 15, 2017) where push notifications are working perfectly.

I'm sure our infrastructure is OK, and the proof is that with an older App version, everything works well.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you a lot
Hello Team

I have a client who has Lync 2013 On premisses and he is migrating to Office 365 . I want to know if there is any means to have an Office 365 User to add Contacts that are sitting on the On premises servers?

Is it possible and how can we achieve that?

I want to mention that the client was using this Lync 2013 just for Internal communication

Cannot access EWS from some operating systems in a hybrid 365 deployment.

-      365 Hybrid environment deployed via on prem Exchange 2016 servers
-      Exchange 2010 still used by majority of organisation
-      Lync 2013 deployed on prem, latest CU
-      365 migrated, Windows 10 based users have full access to call history, voicemail and their meeting tab via EWS
o      Does not work when they login on a Windows 7 client
-      365 migrated, Windows 7 based users cannot access EWS
-      User homed on Exchange 2016 server cannot access EWS
-      User homed on Exchange 2010 server can access EWS when _autodiscover._tcp.business.com is set to the Exchange 2010 CAS, breaks when set to 2016 server
-      Office version is 2016, latest patches applied
-      Kemp Virtual Loadmasters used at both sites

Things tried

-      Logged call with Microsoft 63 days ago…
-      _autodiscover._tcp.business.com
o      Set to Exchange 2016 directly, breaks Win 7 based users homed on Exchange 2010 access to EWS
o      Set to Exchange 2010, Win 10 based users homed on 365 fine, majority of org fine as still homed here, 365 migrated Win 7 users can’t access EWS
-      Checked virtual directories for EWS
-      Checked certificate assigned to Kemp Loadmaster
-      Checked firewall rules to ensure connectivity and no dropped traffic
-      Configured OAUTH between Exch 16 and Exch Online at MS request, did nothing
We are setting up Skype for Business 2015.
In the boardroom I have setup a Laptop with Windows 10 Pro and Skype for Business to be used for Video Conferencing. I have attached a Logitech BCC950 Conference Cam to the laptop. When looking at the Preview in Video settings, you can get a stream from the camera. Once you connect a video call you get the message "Could not start Video: Your camera is not setup or you are already using it."
There are no other applications that could be using the Camera.

I have tried the following:
  1. Updated the driver to the latest that Windows updates can find as Logitech does not supply updates on their website.
  2. Installed all Windows updates.
  3. Changed USB ports. These are only USB 2.0 ports.
  4. Tried a different computer with the same setup but have the same issues.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.
We use Ken's Skypeoptimzer site to create our dialing rules. we've used failover routing in the same site for this.

unfortunately an unintended result is: any external inbound call to one of our users which has simring enabled, results in the sim ring leg of the call going out via our second SIP trunk and not through the same trunk as the inbound call. this becomes an issue since our Secondary 'failover' trunk is infact a pstn gateway which cannot pass the original calling parties call id on the outbound call id of the simring portion of the call.

we do have an sbc which we can add the pstn gateway to (the same one which controls the primary SIP Trunk), the issue is this would introduce a single point of failure into the call path.

has anyone successfully managed to deal with this issue?
