SQL Server Management Studio : Windows Authentication from a non-domain-joined computer.

When trying to connect with an Windows integrated account to a domain-joined Microsoft SQL Server 2017 from a non-domain-joined computer or a computer joined to another non-trusted domain, you get a "login failed" on every connection attempts.

The solution (or workaround) is to use the Windows Credential Manager to pre-configure the domain user account to be trusted by SSMS with the following steps:

Open Credential Manager (type Credential Manager from the Start Menu)
Click "Add A Windows Credential"
Populate the network address field with the name and port number of the SQL instance you wish to store credentials. For example: MyMSSQLServer.domain.org:1433 (1433 is the default port, you may need a different port, especially if you are connecting to a named instance).
Populate the "User Name" including the domain name: "DOMAIN\Username"
Enter the "Password"
Click OK

Done! Restart SSMS, try connecting to the remote SQL Server from your non-domain joined machine and this time your login should work!

CEOs need to know what they should worry about
CEOs need to know what they should worry about

Nearly every week during the past few years has featured a headline about the latest data breach, malware attack, ransomware demand, or unrecoverable corporate data loss. Those stories are frequently followed by news that the CEOs at those companies were forced to resign.

I haven't worked with SQL Server since 2001. Now I'm trying to configure SQL Server Reporting Services. I keep getting an error when I try to create a database in Report Server Configuration Manager or when I try to access the URLs in Web Service URL & Web Portal URL. The following is from ReportingServicesService_2018 log file. Do I need to uninstall SQL Server & SSRS & just start over? Is there a book out there that is for a beginner (which I am after a 17 year break)?  Thank you!

One more thing, the version is 2017. SQL Server Express = 14.0.600.906

library!ReportServer_0-1!665c!12/21/2018-14:14:55:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: No DSN present in configuration file, Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: The report server has encountered a configuration error. ;

When trying to change database in the database section in SSRS Config manager, I get this - error 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server. Thank you

When a customer asks you for something try to your best to understand what exactly he wants to accomplish and not really on what he says he wants, be clear with him what this will be used for before you make a recommendation, take your time, and discuss. for example a client ask me for a NAS drive so he can have all file in his office in a central location and all his staff can access it. Then he calls up that he moved his quickbooks file to the NAS drive and quickbooks does not work, of course it does work, quickbook needs its network manager installed in the same place where the file is and the network manager is a windows based application not Linux. Then he wanted his ticketing program file on the NAS, again sql is not supported on a Linux, would I know more details I would recommend him one model higher than the one I gave him which support a vm where he would be able to have a window machine on.

hm. does it support iSCSI?, then you can store data on the NAS while the processing is on one "server" outside of the box...
Sometimes  think out of the box.

I'm using VS2010 with SQL Server back end and would now like to start using Data Source to connect rather then coding in appconfig. Can you refer me to an example please.

Frank,

Looks like you made this a post rather than a question.  You may want to open up a new Question to attract answers to your query.

I've a stored procedure SP1 built. It has 8 columns n 6 rows. I also created a table T1 with exact 8 columns as SP1 and this table is empty. How do I insert 6 rows from SP1 into T1? Does the insert statement need to be inside the stored proc SP1 or can be it a separate query?

You should post this as a Question and it will draw in Experts within the areas you designate.  It looks like you will want to ask about how to JOIN data.  Good luck!

We are importing (Bulk Insert) of around half million records to the staging table and then to the production table.

More often column data type or size validation fails the bulk insert process from Staging table to the Production table.

I will have to redesign the process by SSIS packages by inserting all the good records from Staging to the Production and load the bad / error out data to the staging table. Those bad or error out data with proper validation message.

Validation message is based on first error out column. If the all the columns in that row are erroring, we can consider with the first column error and reload the data after fixing that data.

Example Error Message: Column PurchaseDate has invalid data

How do I achieve this complete workflow SSIS package. What are the controls, I need to use to start with?

Please :)

A real head scratcher

SQL Server 2005
Web Service .Net Framework 3.5
Symbol MC3190
VB.NET Compact Framework 3.5

Dates consumed by the compact framework are shifted by the difference in the timezone between the server and the client.

Luckily for me the fix was as just a matter of setting the client machines timezone to that of the server.

Just putting it out there in case someone runs into something similar.
