Microsoft Virtual Server

Microsoft Virtual Server was a virtualization solution that facilitated the creation of virtual machines on the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Virtual machines are created and managed through a web-based interface that relies on Internet Information Services (IIS) or through a Windows client application tool called VMRCplus. Features included Linux guest operating system support, Virtual Disk Precompactor, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), x64 host operating system support, the ability to mount virtual hard drives on the host machine and additional operating systems support, including Windows Vista, and a volume shadow copy writer.

HyperV ManagerSnapshotVMs paused-Critical stateHi,Virtual Hard Disk FolderVM stuck during shutdownOptions under Action menu
I accidently created a snapshot on the VM "FT1" and there are two problems:
(1) Every so many seconds, when I open this VM in Hyper-V manager, it goes to "pause" state showing the screen in shaded color. When I start it, it goes back to shaded/pause  state.
(2) Now I am getting "Out of Disk" message on my Hyper-V server.

I did not intend to create a snapshot at all. I was expecting a snapshot manager screen as I chose "snapshot". But I think it is trying to create a snapshot and the server ran out of space. It seems that the logical thing to do is to cancel "snapshot creation process" because there is no hard drive space for the snapshot to be created in the first place, delete the temporary file "FT1_2481848F-1B1E-4667-A1A2-985A4E532138.avhdx"(18.9GB), and restart the "FT1" VM.

What should I do?

** I forgot to mention that I was trying to shut down the VM, but that is even stuck.

Protecting & Securing Your Critical Data

Considering 93 percent of companies file for bankruptcy within 12 months of a disaster that blocked access to their data for 10 days or more, planning for the worst is just smart business. Learn how Acronis Backup integrates security at every stage

My primary AD server (and DNS) is a physical machine (Server 2008R2), while my secondary AD server (and secondary DNS) is a hyper-v virtual machine.
My primary server I back up each day, but the secondary vm is backed up as a hyper-v image from 3 months ago.
I lost the virtual secondary server (theft of the host server), and would like to restore (import) the old hyper-v image on the new host server.

If I import the old hyper-v image of the secondary server onto the new host hyper-v server, will it run okay? Or will the new host hardware be a problem for the virtual AD server? I have already imported another non Active Directory vm image to the new host hardware, so I know the hardware is compatible, just I am unsure about AD.
Also, I assume the secondary server, once connected will automatically synchronise with the primary server?

We recently upgraded our SCCM clients (Configuration Manager) to 5.00.8634.1814.

We did this after upgrading the site to 1802.

After the upgrade all of the icons in Software Center are wacked out.  Prior to the upgrade, something was taking different sized icons and make them automatically appear the same.

In the new version, this functionality works in the List View option - all icons appear the same size regardless of their size.  In Tile View, which everyone uses, this is not the case.  The icons are not being adjusted for the view.

Has anyone else noted this issue?  Is there a setting somewhere I can click to resize?

I hope so.  So far it's that or I have to resize them all manually.

SIP and Primary SMTP domains do not match. Skype for Business 2015 client displays EWS not deployed.
Hello, I have an Exchange 2007 and Skype for Business 2015 Server on-premise solution deployed.
Originally, functioning fine with SAN certs using <company>.org domain for required certs on mail server and SfB 2015 Standard Edition solution (Standard, Edge and WAP servers).
Primary SMTP domain was <longcompanyname>.com  (domain NOT included in the SAN certs) and everything functioned fine including Conversation History and Calendar synch between Outlook (2007-2013) and Skype for Business 2015 client.
Fast forward a few years and....
New domain purchased and Primary SMTP for each user changed to <shortcompanyname>.com
NOW, Conversation History and Calendar do NOT synch with Outlook anymore.
Research appeared to state I can have this circumstance without issue after running 'Set-CsClientPolicy -DisableEmailComparisonCheck $true'
Ran the powershell command on the SfB Standard Edition server, rebooted test client and SfB solution. STill Outlook Integration Error and EWS not deployed in SfB client Configuration info.
Advice?

A client of mine wants the Direct Access role to be installed within a Server 2016 Hyper-V virtual machine.

I have already found instructions for setting up Direct Access but these guides don't include any instructions on how to set up the Hyper-V networking to support installing Direct Access within a Server 2016 Hyper-V virtual machine.

Please provide me with the instructions for installing Direct Access including setting up the Hyper-V virtual machine networking that is necessary for installing Direct Access within a Hyper-V virtual machine.

Direct Access will be installed on a server that has 4 physical RJ network ports.

We currently have SBS2011 and We want to move to Server 2016 as our DC with Exchange 2016.
We don't need any advice for setting-up Server 2016 as a DC or Exchange 2016 - however

Should we-

Setup and configure Server 2016 as a DC on physical hardware - install the Hyper-V element and setup a VM to run Exchange 2016 (within the DC environment)?
OR
Do we setup the host OS (Server 2016) on Physical hardware and install the Hyper-V element - THEN setup 2 VM's - one as the DC and the other as Exchange.

Which is the best configuration please.
Thank you
Paul

I have a Hyper-V base server that has a total of 24 processors.

Is it possible to assign more than 24 total virtual processors among the Hyper-V virtual machines?

In other words, can the virtual machines share virtual processors?

Hyper-V Storage Recommendation for small enterprise required.

I have a customer that is a 25 seat accounting practice.  Currently they have a server that is 4 years old, dual Xeon CPUs, 72GB of RAM.  Storage is a RAID 6 array of 8 15K 300GB SAS hard disks.  There are 2 years remaining on the warranty.  The server is a Windows 2012 Hyper-V host.  There are 3VMs, a DC, a file server and a RemoteApp server.  The server provides more than adequate compute resources but is running out of storage space.  One of the file server volumes has already been moved to a Synology NAS connected via iSCSI.  Even with that, storage on the server is becoming severely constrained. Storage requirements are only going to grow as the client is moving towards "paperless" operation.

I don't know much about storing VMs outside of the box that they are hosted on, but it seems attractive to move the virtual disks to some sort of network based storage. Easily scalable storage, and when the time comes the ability to replace the Hyper-V host hardware and simply migrate the VMs without disturbing the VHDs.  For a smaller organization like this it seems (from my limited research) that a true SAN is not going to be financially viable.  Is it feasible to use NAS boxes to store VMs or am I going to be better off just recommending replacing the entire server?

DR is handled by a 4TB Datto Siris, so building a multi node cluster really isn't necessary either IMHO.  I know there are some small scale …

Hi, I am looking to use Virtual Machine Manager in my domain.

I am setting up logical switches etc, and currently I have it set up as follows.

3x Logical Switches - Client, Storage and Management.

The management Logical switch has 2 uplinks, one for cluster comms and the other for host management. The storage has 1 uplink for storage and the Client has no uplink, as I map clients to it.

Now, each of my servers have 6 network connections, 2x 10GB and 4x 1GB.   Currently I create the storage virtual switch with the 2 x 10GB adapters. I use port 1+3 from the 1GB for Management and port 2+4 for the client.

This setup works well. I have created a cluster in VMM and it all seems to work without issue.

However..... I have been thinking that I am wasting bandwidth on my 4x 1GB ports, as host management / client communications use hardly any badwidth but I have 4GB assigned to them.

I tried adding the Client uplink to my Management Switch, but then this also creates the connection on the local host which takes up an address in the address pool etc.

Is it possible for me to share the connection across all 4 1GB connections and have the setup how I want?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Acronis True Image 2019 just released!

Create a reliable backup. Make sure you always have dependable copies of your data so you can restore your entire system or individual files.

Hello,
We have a Hyper-V cluster consisting of 3 hosts sharing 5 VMs. The disks are part of an iSCSI storage. One of our servers "server1" has its drive D on:
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\HyperV\server1\Virtual Hard Disks\server1\DATA_5F06292E-D0FD-4D21-AD25-DFF18040CFD7.avhdx
We traced Volume1 to Cluster Disk 2 which has 6.8TB with 1.5TB free.

Is expanding server1 drive D volume the same as if this HyperV host was a stand alone?

Should I follow these steps here or are there any special consideration for a Hyper-V cluster?

https://redmondmag.com/articles/2016/01/04/expand-vm-storage-capacity.aspx

Also, I noticed some VMs have a lot of checkpoints, which are only visible from Hyper-V manager. Can I safely remove those? I am assuming they are tight up to our backup software Altaro which is not used anymore.

Many thanks for your help.

I have a dc and i have used VMware converter standalone to get my secondary dc and mail server online in vmware workstation. I am able to ping mail server and secondary dc.

Problem: When I create a vm for my primary DC i get the following error when it is booted in vmware workstation 0xc00002e2

What can i do to fix this.

I have tried using other tools like disk2vhd as well and ls it works fine in hyperv without any errors. If i install hyperv on the same machine i get errors when vm's load up in vmware

I have also used shadow protect to backup but it was unable to boot on vmware and gave the same error 0xc00002e2

I have also tried the following

According to Microsoft's documentation, here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/orchestrator/get-network-adapter?view=sc-orch-2016 I should have a filter called "VM ID", however I am missing this and several others (see screenshot)...

So the more I read about this the more frustrating I find it. It seems the more simply people try to explain it the more convoluted the explanations get.

Here is a simple example of a scenario.

Server 2016 Xeon 2 CPU's 8 Cores each
So this is 16 logical processors

I have 4 Hyper V VM's
2 x DC these need a small amount of CPU but it cannot be allowed to fall below a certain threshold say 20% as it serves DNC / DHCP etc
1 x File server
1 x RDS with 5-10 users max

64GB RAM

The server should be fine for the small amount of users and throughput, it is some basic files and there are no heavy apps in RDS.

All the servers should be able to take however much free resources they want.

How many VP should I assign per server.

My reading leads my to believe give them all 2 VP's and set max  / min limits to protect other servers and HV will share out free CPU time efficiently. My experience is that this makes them sluggish and the thresholds do not allow for high overall system resource. I would expect RDS to need the majority most of the time but if I am running WSUS ora backup process overnight when RDS is not being used it should give up its resources.

Any help appreciated, also how do I know HV is using all LP's not queuing time for the same ones from different servers.

Hello i need help to figure out whats is going on with this please help.. i am building 2 VMs from hyper-v (Azure) as windows cluster when i go validate the cluster it brings the D drive offline on both the nodes and i see the error in the report as ( failed while verifying removal of any persistent reservation ) but i can manually bring the D drive online in computer managment, i tried to run the commands i seen online which is   Clear-ClusterDiskReservation -Disk but when i do that it would say failed to clear persistent reservation from disk . even i deleted both VMs and recreated new ones from Hyper-v (Azure) but it is still doing the same thing. i have also tried Diskpart to clear attributes in disk but none of this is working :/

Hi All,

Used disk2vhd to convert an 2003 server. The conversion went well, i choose vhd as an option. Now I'm trying to attache the hard drive to a Hyper-v Server 2016 and getting the error below. I moved the vhd file to suggested location, checked permission but nothing. Have a feeling it has to do with a compatability issue with server 2016 and vhd files. Any help appreciated.

HyperV VM Refuses to Power up Following a Power Loss in HyperV Cluter.

I am getting event IDs 21502, 1069.1205, and 1254. Looks like some config file got corrupted, can I just remove the config file? Tried rebooting one of the hosts in the cluster but that didnt do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

JavaScript Best Practices

Save hours in development time and avoid common mistakes by learning the best practices to use for JavaScript.

I have a new server that has been modified to be a VM server using Hyper-V.  I have six 600GB HDD to use and the system/OS drive is 300GB.  I've installed Hpyer-V and created 4 virtual machines and installed the OS Win2012 server on all four.  I want to begin to create hard drives for each virtual machine and my question is do I first RAID all six HDD's or do I not RIAD them first?  Currently four of the six HDD are set at RAID 5 and I was think all six should be set with RAID 10.
My first time with Hyper-V and virtualization.

I am using two host computers running Server 16 to setup 4 VM servers for a new domain. Host1 will have VM1 as the domain controller and VM2 as the Exchange Server. Host 2 will have VM3 as the secondary domain controller and VM4 as the file and application server.
Do the host machines need to join the network after the domain controller is up and running? what is the best practice?
Thanks,

I have one Azure VM which exist in a different region to our other Azure VM's and  is not connected to our vnet.

I have to get data off the data disk.

Can I mount the data disk VHD  blob directly in a Windows 10 PC? Can I mount the blob across regions to an existing VM?

How s can I get the data across to our main vnet?

Hello,

I have an issue with RDP Remote printing…

One user was away from the office and with his laptop, used a remote desktop connection to his office computer. While logged in he printed a document from the RDP session to the remote office printer. Everything printed OK.

He has to go to a client’s office. While there he logs onto one of their local machines using remote desktop. As soon as he logged on the document he previously printed through RDP at his own office comes off the client’s printer.

Does anyone know why this is happening and more importantly, how to stop it! Any clues where to look will be appreciated.

Thanks for looking at this.
