Microsoft Virtual Server

Microsoft Virtual Server was a virtualization solution that facilitated the creation of virtual machines on the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Virtual machines are created and managed through a web-based interface that relies on Internet Information Services (IIS) or through a Windows client application tool called VMRCplus. Features included Linux guest operating system support, Virtual Disk Precompactor, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), x64 host operating system support, the ability to mount virtual hard drives on the host machine and additional operating systems support, including Windows Vista, and a volume shadow copy writer.

On Demand Webinar - Networking for the Cloud Era

This webinar discusses:
-Common barriers companies experience when moving to the cloud
-How SD-WAN changes the way we look at networks
-Best practices customers should employ moving forward with cloud migration
-What happens behind the scenes of SteelConnect’s one-click button

I would like to make a few 100 vm's available for remote users to access through a Barracuda 480 SSLVPN Appliance. These users will be logging into these vm's on a daily basis. I'm a little unsure about which direction to go. Do I do a virtual machine based or session based deployment? All of the documentation that I have read is very confusing at times. I have a Nvidia K2 installed on my host so I will be applying remotefx on those vm's.

I have 2 HYPERV host servers.

HYPERV1 is hosting APPSERVER
HYPERV2 is hosting  SBS2011 server and TERMINAL server.

(besides I have another domain controller and  approx 20 workstations)

I had hardware issues with the HYPERV2 host server and had to rebuild it with MS Server 2016 standard (It was MS Server 2012 R2 before)
I use Altaro for backup of the virtual machines.

I restored (or rather imported from backup) my main server Sbs2011 (Small Business Server 2011)

Now after the restore I have issues with connectivity to this server.

The server seemed to be restored correctly, but when I want to connect to shared folder on the Sbs2011 from another server I get following message:

"\\sbs2011\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission.
Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect"

I thought that possibly rejoining the domain will fix the issue, but when I try to do that I get:

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domain":
Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect."

It looks like I have no issues connecting to the SBS2011 by IP address.
I also noticed that after the reboot the SBS2011 netlogon service is paused and time service is not started.
They start manually without issues.

Well I am stuck - please help.

Dear Experts,

Need urgent expert suggestion. Our hyper v cluster formed on SMB as storage is going unstable lately for some reason. Vm's just goes missing out of no where, the cluster behaves erratic, Host communication goes down from VMM but actual host will be running

We had this situation twice earlier and somehow recovered but this is recurring again like once in 10 to 15 days.

Please suggest where else to start looking for reason and if there is any trouble shooting guide to iron out the problem

Thanks and looking forward

Best Regards

I am setting up a site in an Azure VM Windows 2012 server. The DNS is pointing to the external IP of that machine.
Yet, when I go to IIS to bind the site to that IP the IP is not displayed in the drop down menu and the site does not come up.
I checked the traceroute and the domain is correctly pointing to that IP, I am not familiar with what other configuration needs to take place in order to bind the external IP to the site so that it comes up.
Any guidance would be helpful.

Hi all,

all of a sudden my virtual machine on the hyper v can't access network. the server have been working before without a problem.
now, the server can't even ping its default gateway. However, it can only ping one IP in our network.
i removed the network card adapter and recreated but with no chance.
the server is running windows server 2012 standard.

kindly advise.

I have a quick question. I am building a hyper-v virtual machine. I am new to virtualization. On a physical machine I would make a "C" drive for the OS and create another partition for the Data drive. On a virtual machine, would I do the same or create a virtual disk for the "C" and a virtual disk for the "D"?

Efficient way to get backups off site to Azure

This user guide provides instructions on how to deploy and configure both a StoneFly Scale Out NAS Enterprise Cloud Drive virtual machine and Veeam Cloud Connect in the Microsoft Azure Cloud.

I have a Lenovo System x x3250 M6 3633K3U 1U Rack-mountable Server - 1 x Intel Xeon E3-1230 v5 Quad-core (4 Core) 3.40 GHz 16GB of Ram and 3 2TB Hard Drives in a Raid 1 with Hotspare.

This is a new install running in Server core mode and i installed all updates, changed Hostname, and set a static ip. When i run the following command in powershell i get an error. i checked the event logs but dont see any errors. Not sure if there is a different log to check.

I'm using my home PC as a lab for virtual machines, and I do some media sharing from one of my VMs that I previously created in Workstation that I keep encrypted.  I don't need the VMs to be on 24/7; rather, just when I want to do more lab work or do media sharing to my TV.

Which environment do you recommend I go with?  It's been tricky getting both platforms working at the same time.  And is there a way to encrypt the contents of HyperV?

Conversion ErrorPath to VHDHi,

  I have a 2016 Hyper-V server and a physical PC that runs SBS2011.
In order to convert a physical SBS PC as a virtual machine in Hyper-V, I ran Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter on HyperV server.
I provided HyperV computer login information as well as SBS login information/IP address and selected Volumes/VM Name - RAM-Processor    ... etc.

Finally when I entered "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks" in the path folder, I get an error message.
Isn't the path here the same as "Default location for virtual hard disk files" that you designate when installing HyperV server?
 Apparently not.

 Can you help?
 Thanks.

I am interested in what others are doing to automate management of server 2012. Specifically, I am looking at automated scripts.  What are some best practices or scripts everyone is running.  I have some already such as dusk checker and remove temp files.

I need to run 3x Windows 7 Professional instances as a virtual machine guest OSes on one physical server hardware running under Windows Server 2008 R2 Std.
It is going to be accessed by, say, 5 different users on 5 different computers who all already have proper Windows 7 Professional OEM on their physical desktops or laptops.
All these users are in the same company.

Question:
What licenses do I need to purchase from Microsoft for all of these to be properly licensed?

For example, Microsoft VDA per device, Microsoft VDA per user, Windows Software Assurance per User Add-on, etc.
And how many.

Also, what kind of activation key is supposed to be used for this virtual guest OS installation?

Hello,

This is a question regarding best practices.

In terms of Windows Operating Systems that are running Hyper-V and hosting virtual servers, what is the right procedure to follow when it comes to Anti-Virus software.

Should it be installed on the host or not.  If yes, what exclusions should be in place?

Please advise.

Thanks,

From what I understand this product is free.  Its only a Hypervisor with no gui, beyond that, what limitations are there?  Could you run 10-20 VM's on this with no other underlying licensees?

Hi,

I have some questions to experts who have implemented "Clustering Hyper-V servers" on the same network in the same building.
(1) If there is a benefit of going with Windows 2016 Hyper-V over Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V
(2) if I get two server boxes with same hardware configuration in terms of (CPU,RAM,RAID,HD), other than buying either Windows server 2012R2 or 2016, what more do I need to implement this?
(3) If I set up these two hyper-v boxes in clustered, then would HyperV1 server (with virtual machines) always in sync with HyerV2 server? if I unplug the power from HyperV1 server, what happen to the users who has been connected to the virtual machine in HyeprV1? What is the downtime or manual work involved in making the transition from HyperV1 to HyperV2 server?

At this point, I like to know what I need to buy in terms of software and hardware and like to have good understanding of what actually happens when the main server fails in cluster environment?

Thanks.

I am currently evaluating pros and cons of using RDS or VDI for Windows Server 2012R2.

There are (curently 7 but will be more) thin clients who need to use a Microsoft Access FE (front-end) to read and write information to a shared Access database (on a company shared drive on the LAN) and connect to SQL Server to read (and perhaps write) data.

I appreciate any information you can pass along -- as well as how to accomplish connecting to databases outside the virtual machine to read and write to shared back-ends

thank you

respectfully,
crystal

I have an old server running VMware with windows server 2008 and exchange 2010. I am planning on moving the exchange to Hyper-v. is it possible to have exchange in both virtual environments and have one as a failover. if so is there a non complicated way to accomplish this.

I've been contemplating moving all my VMware server VMs to Microsoft HyperV.  Here is my thoughts.  Let me know if this will work.

Environment:
2 - HP Gen8 server hosts running VMware 5.5
1 - HP SAN connected to network switch
6 - Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 VMs.
    3 - running on server host #1
    3 - running on server host #2
    VMDKs located on SAN

Scenario:
1. vMotion all VMs to server host #1
2. Format and install Microsoft Server 2016 on server host #2
3. Install HyperV role
4. Attach Windows Server 2016 (server host #2) to SAN
(THIS IS THE PART I'M NOT SURE I CAN DO SINCE THE SAN IS USED ON THE VMWARE HOSTS)
(CAN I ATTACH A MICROSOFT SERVER TO A SAN USED FOR VMWARE?)
5. Provided I can attach server host #2 to the SAN - run Microsoft's VMware to HyperV conversion tool on all 6 VMs to bring them into the HyperV environment.
6. Once all VMware VMs are converted and running on server host #2 - format and install Microsoft Server 2016 on server host #1
7. Install HyperV role
8. Attach Windows Server 2016 (server host #1) to SAN
9. Move 3 servers to server host #1 to balance load

Last - are there any Microsoft licensing issues I need to be aware of?  I have purchased Microsoft Datacenter 2016 Software Assurance.
