Microsoft Virtual Server

Microsoft Virtual Server was a virtualization solution that facilitated the creation of virtual machines on the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Virtual machines are created and managed through a web-based interface that relies on Internet Information Services (IIS) or through a Windows client application tool called VMRCplus. Features included Linux guest operating system support, Virtual Disk Precompactor, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), x64 host operating system support, the ability to mount virtual hard drives on the host machine and additional operating systems support, including Windows Vista, and a volume shadow copy writer.

Hi All,

Used disk2vhd to convert an 2003 server. The conversion went well, i choose vhd as an option. Now I'm trying to attache the hard drive to a Hyper-v Server 2016 and getting the error below. I moved the vhd file to suggested location, checked permission but nothing. Have a feeling it has to do with a compatability issue with server 2016 and vhd files. Any help appreciated.

I have a new server that has been modified to be a VM server using Hyper-V.  I have six 600GB HDD to use and the system/OS drive is 300GB.  I've installed Hpyer-V and created 4 virtual machines and installed the OS Win2012 server on all four.  I want to begin to create hard drives for each virtual machine and my question is do I first RAID all six HDD's or do I not RIAD them first?  Currently four of the six HDD are set at RAID 5 and I was think all six should be set with RAID 10.
My first time with Hyper-V and virtualization.
Hi am in window 7 having this error when starting vm in hyper

I am using two host computers running Server 16 to setup 4 VM servers for a new domain. Host1 will have VM1 as the domain controller and VM2 as the Exchange Server. Host 2 will have VM3 as the secondary domain controller and VM4 as the file and application server.
Do the host machines need to join the network after the domain controller is up and running? what is the best practice?

I have one Azure VM which exist in a different region to our other Azure VM's and  is not connected to our vnet.

I have to get data off the data disk.

Can I mount the data disk VHD  blob directly in a Windows 10 PC? Can I mount the blob across regions to an existing VM?

How s can I get the data across to our main vnet?

I have an issue with RDP Remote printing…

One user was away from the office and with his laptop, used a remote desktop connection to his office computer. While logged in he printed a document from the RDP session to the remote office printer. Everything printed OK.

He has to go to a client’s office. While there he logs onto one of their local machines using remote desktop. As soon as he logged on the document he previously printed through RDP at his own office comes off the client’s printer.

Does anyone know why this is happening and more importantly, how to stop it! Any clues where to look will be appreciated.

Thanks for looking at this.
A customer wants to have users register, manage profile, reset password and this is possible using B2C.

What I'd like to know is, whether it is possible to integrate all this functionality in an existing web application and perform REST APIs to Azure B2C?
I'm creating a new Server 2012 Windows server and have a question about the CPU setting.

I'm using VMware and need to create a server with 12 cores.   When prompted for the CPU I'm given both a " Number of Virtual Sockets" and " Number of Cores per socket " .....

I don't totally understand these values and need a bit of help setting them.

Thanks ...

I’ve been struggling for a while with the following case:
I’ve have two servers with Windows Server 2016 + Hyper-V role installed. I use WSB to backup VM’s from the Host and everything works fine, except when randomly (every month, every two weeks, etc.) the backup fails. So, I realized when that happen is because the Hyper-V items is not listed in the Select Items Windows. I can see all drive listed including the BMR, System state, EFI System Partition and Recovery Partition.  If I use wbadmin.exe, then, I got the error:

Retrieving volume information...
ERROR - The Hyper-V component 'Server Name' specified is invalid.
The specified component spec is invalid.

Short story, the only way that all came to normally is rebooting the servers but this is not the ideal solution. So, I came here looking for you helps guys.
Thank you in advance!
Dear Experts,

Where can I get information on doing a P2V migration of Redhat Linux to a Hyper-V Win 2012 R2 server?

I have never done P2V before.

We use SCCM 2012 to remote our user computers.
RDP works on all computers but Remote Control only works on some ones.
I check some of these failing computers and SCCM client is installed and the Remote Control setting enable.
If I run "Msiexec /i Client.msi SMSFULLREMOTETOOLS=1" this fix the problem.  Apparently the Remote Tool component is missing in these computers.
Is it a way to fix this problem remotely?
Hello we have an IIS hosted website, binded to Citrix XenApp Store Front.  We have an AD server, Web Server, Citrix Server.
Currently in order to access site users need a CAC/PKI once this have authenticated they must enter a username & password to get into store front to see their application(s).  What we would like to do is get rid of the username & password, have just CAC/PKI authentication.

I have got in to little trouble our VM host was corrupted because of sudden power loss so i had to rebuild VM-host machine and then created new VM using hyper-v manager by attaching existing HDD, i thought i should have current user data on it but strangely it has previous user who was using this vm a month ago data on it but no data for current user who used it even last week, I still have VHDX  files from few days back in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual hard disks, so i was wondering is there any way if i can apply vhdx file to existing VHDD or any other way to get current user data back i have attached the picture of hyper-v HDD's

We have set up Anywhere Access on our 2016 Essentials server, and it is currently working fine, most importantly users are able to connect from outside, to their internal client desktops.
However, we are now approaching the end of the RDS licensing "grace period" and we are getting warnings on the server about RDS licensing.

I have searched without success so far to find definitive answers to the following questions: -
1) Do we need to purchase additional RDS CALs, over and above the Essentials CALs, to continue using Anywhere Access to connect to client desktops? (Not to the server desktop)
2) How exactly should the Remote Desktop Services be configured on the base server? The analyser is saying that a licence server is not assigned, but it does appear to be assigned in the control panel. Of course all services are on the same box in this typical small setup.

The server is not being used as an application server, so we do not need RDS in the way that used to be known as Terminal Services.

The "Set up Anywhere Access" wizard in the Essentials control panel directed us through installing Remote Desktop Services but did not provide guidance on setting it up.

Many thanks for any insights or guidance,

I have two Lync server at A location (Live) and we are replicating it at B location for DR. We have to do drill down activity. So after starting server at B location, we have to start reverse replication from B to A. How to achieve this?
I have a 2012 VM running on a host 2008 server sp2.   I am having issues with the 2012 vm shutting down every few minutes.  I am seeing the following error in the hyper-v admin log.   I have tried to install integrated services.   Is there and update for 2012 integrated services running on an older host (2008 server sp2).

Integrated services version according to the registry is 6.2.9200.16384.

Data Exchange failed to connect to virtual machine 'Win2012APPS4' because the version does not match the version expected by Hyper-V (Virtual machine ID D8A5FF01-E0BE-47EF-BA5D-9017FD7CE70F). To fix this problem, remove the existing version from the guest operating system and then install the version provided with the version of Hyper-V you are using.
What is the process to attach .VHDX and .VHD hard drive files to existing Hyper-V virtual machines?

These are files from former Hyper-V virtual machines that I need to connect so I can copy data from them to newer existing Hyper-V virtual machines.
I currently have Excel importing data from an Access db, however, the database is moving to a Virtual Machine that we have with MS Azure.
I am unsure what I need to do to connect to the db once it's moved.  The Excel will still be on my local machine.
We currently login to the VM via Remote Desktop Connection.  Within the VBA, what do I need?  Do I need to enter the password (as I do when I connect via RDC)?

thanks in advance

Hi to everyone,

I am facing some issue, I configured NLB on server 2012  for share point server, i have two host with high availability and two share point server.....
now i can able to ping virtual ip and also able to resolve from any server with same subnet.

But from client am not able to ping virtual ip but i can able to ping same server  subnet  like share point server etc and virtual ip also set same subnet of share point..

Servers and clients are connected different different switch..please let me know what else configuration need to do...

How to resolve this issue and tips and advice please.
I would like to make a few 100 vm's available for remote users to access through a Barracuda 480 SSLVPN Appliance. These users will be logging into these vm's on a daily basis. I'm a little unsure about which direction to go. Do I do a virtual machine based or session based deployment? All of the documentation that I have read is very confusing at times. I have a Nvidia K2 installed on my host so I will be applying remotefx on those vm's.
Hello - I was asked by a school to create a VDI environment that students can access through thin clients. I haven't done a lot of research yet and wanted to check if anyone can point me to a good reference or even a little walk through how this should be done,

The school wanted to setup the lab entirely in Azure, however the monthly reoccurring cost are to high in the long run. So I suggested an on-premise setup with the option to provision clients to Azure if needed. From what I was reading about Windows Server 2016, it's seems to be designed to work closely with Azure.

What hardware specs would you recommend to provision, manage and run those 50 VMs? I was thinking about getting a lower end server for AZURE ADS connector and the Systems Center suite which I assume is needed to manage and provision VMs.

For the Hyper-V server running the VM I am a trying to find out what the minimum specs should be to accommodate all machines at the same time. Or would it be better to get two servers and setup a cluster?

As for licensing, I wanted to go with the Server 2016 standard or is there any feature in the Datacenter edition that I would need? I am also unclear on the licensing? Do I need a user or device CAL for every connection? The machines are supposed to run Windows 10 with Office installed and some other free software. How would that be billed (education licensing) ?

Hope I was able to give an idea what I am trying to do here. I am looking forward to your …
We have a 2012 Server running Hyper-V. I have 3 VMs running under it. Win 2016, Win 8.1, and Win 10. The W2016 and W10 VMs are both experiencing an issue whereby the date/time are rapidly switching back and forth between the host time and some date/time back in 2015.

Some facts.
The problem goes away if the W32time service is disabled on the affected VMs.
We do not see this issue on VMs with earlier versions of Windows.
The host and VMs are only in workgroups.
None of the machines (host or VMs) are a DC.
I've reproduced this exact behavior on another host.

Any input on this time sync issues would be very welcomed
I have 2 HYPERV host servers.

HYPERV2 is hosting  SBS2011 server and TERMINAL server.

(besides I have another domain controller and  approx 20 workstations)

I had hardware issues with the HYPERV2 host server and had to rebuild it with MS Server 2016 standard (It was MS Server 2012 R2 before)
I use Altaro for backup of the virtual machines.

I restored (or rather imported from backup) my main server Sbs2011 (Small Business Server 2011)

Now after the restore I have issues with connectivity to this server.

The server seemed to be restored correctly, but when I want to connect to shared folder on the Sbs2011 from another server I get following message:

"\\sbs2011\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission.
Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect"

I thought that possibly rejoining the domain will fix the issue, but when I try to do that I get:

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domain":
Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect."

It looks like I have no issues connecting to the SBS2011 by IP address.
I also noticed that after the reboot the SBS2011 netlogon service is paused and time service is not started.
They start manually without issues.

Well I am stuck - please help.
