I am trying to create a generic shape that incorporates an external image file with a known folder path and a file pointer provided as a property from an external Visio add-on. This shape would pull the appropriate images based on the instance from which the shape was utilized.

Has anyone else had the issue when trying to launch a Microsoft Viso File from your jump list, i get an error in chinese, when i try to open that exact same after i have opened visio, it opens perfectly, so just from the jump list i have an issue.

Please help

Running windows 10 64bit, Core I7, 8gb Ram 256gb SSD

Im using Visio 2016 via Parallels on my Mac. My virtual machine is Win 10 Pro.
I use a Magic Mouse and am having trouble accidentially panning around the document when my finger moves slightly when moving the mouse.
I'd be quite happy to disable Panning in Visio but can't see a way to do it. Another option would be to disable one finger scroll in Parallels 13 but I can't see how to do that either.

Our company use Visio to draw schematic wiring diagrams. We have created many custom stencils with shapes that have been exported from AutoCAD.

At the moment, using an A1 titleblock, we are finding it tiresome having to drag each required shape into the drawing, using a select window and re-sizing the shapes and text to fit into the paper space because the number of shapes on each schematic will differ greatly depending on the size of the job.

We would like to ask if there is a way to batch re-size shapes on each stencil so that the shape size and text size are uniform.

We have already looked into the "Size and Position" window and changing the page scale, but this does not fix the issue because the text size does not change and each shape is a different size depending on what piece of equipment it is representing.

At the end of the day, we would like to batch edit the shapes on each stencil so that they are a standard size that is readable when used in a schematic diagram.

I have attached a visio drawing with examples of different shapes that we use.

Any help that you can provide is much appreciated.

Thank you
I want to link my excel data to gantt chart shape in visio to update values in excel and reflect in gantt chart accordingly.
After I import my excel data into visio, i am trying to link this data (row data) to my gantt chart shape by drag-drop or through menu data link option. But updated data is being reflected in shape data but not being reflected in gantt chart frame itself.
all column names in gantt chart and in excel data are same and i refer (task #) column as ref. column to match data.
but when I link relevant data row to each object in same task line in gantt chart frame, start dates are being updated for example, but not finish date or duration or task name being updated even though i drag and drop onto each cells in same task line in gantt chart
When i click on task name for example , i can see updated data in shape data window as it is linked already to my excel data, but that value or text does not show up in the drawing (gantt chart)
When i try this data linking on other shapes than gantt chart (timeline block e.g.) i dont get such issue and once it is updated in shape data, it is being reflected in drawing too.
Can you assist on that?
Hello Support

Can someone let me know if there are any applications/tools that will allow me import the resources from a resource group and diagram the resources in an application like Microsoft Visio. I have found the following application but its very expensive

If you're aware of any suitable applications I would be grateful.

I have been teaching a colleague how to create org charts on our own machines. When showing her how to rearrange subordinates,  each time she selects a subordinate pattern with the connectors on the left hand side 2 things happen:
1. the 1st subordinate does not arrange as the rest it's arrow is always bent and forms a different pattern into the manager
2. the distance from the connectors to the shapes is very large
However if she selects any patterns with the connectors on the right of the shapes she gets what I get, and what I expect, uniformity and a tighter space.
We are both using 2016. Please advise. This is her first introduction to Visio so her software is straight out of the box so to speak.
Any ideas gratefully accepted

I have downloaded a dynamic connector created by John Goldsmith

I have edited it and am currently using it as a cable label in schematic diagrams. I find this shape very handy because it syncs the start and end connectors.

Is there a way to add in an auto numbering feature to this shape?

I would like to use a format of X001 , where X is a letter indicating the type of cable (e.g. V for video, A for audio etc).
I would then like the shape to number up by 1 when copied.

Would this be best to do as a formula in the Shape Sheet? Or by using code?

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.
Hi, In using the wizard to create an org chart when I reach the step where I select the name and report to from the drop down menu, it doesn't show the correct values i.e., name, supervisor, etc.  instead it picks up the data in first 2 rows of the file.
In Sharepoint 2013 (on prem), when I click on a command button, I am grabbing items from a master sharepoint list and creating a separate list (in a different site) from the items I have grabbed. In the same event of the command button, I would like to be able to create or instantiate a simple Visio file consisting of 1 container/shape for each list item. For example, if I have 4 list items named (1) Apha (2) Beta (3) Gamma (4) Delta, then the Visio file I will create should have 4 process shape containers (one corresponding to each item with the respective text of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta)

To summarize, I need to provide Export to Visio functionality feature to able to create a visio file along with the list. Is there way to do with Jquery/Javascript api to create a dynamic visio file related to process item.

Here's helpful link to create a visio diagram into webpart using ECMAScript but unable to find out namespace of VwaControl namespace:

I really appreciate your suggestion on this.

I have Visio Standard 2013 32 bit.
I uploaded one of my vsdx to SharePoint and when I try to open it by copy-pasting the address in the Open window in Visio, I get an error saying that file <address>\BASFLO_U.VSSX is part of the workspace but cannot be opened.

Visio cannot open the file or component in the file because it is corrupt.

If I click OK, it keeps trying to open and displays the same message but using XFUNC_U,VSSX then using TITLE_U,VSSX and so on.

This does not happen when I do the same with Word, PowerPoint or Excel on my PC. Note that I have office 2016 installed on my PC.
Hello All!

I am new to Visio/VBA and am looking for code  that will export all textboxes on a page to excel. I do not want to use a shape report because I'd like to be able to loop this macro to export all textboxes, from all files in a designated folder.

Your help is MUCH appreciated, so thank you in advance!
I am a Microsoft Instructor of 21 years but have not been able to find an answer to a question I received in class today. After applying color to a Layer in a Workflow Diagram (We were on the Work Flow Steps stencil), only part of the shapes were outlined in the color - the rest of the shape disappeared. For example, one shape is called "Agreement" and is an image of two people with callouts over their heads and a checkmark in the middle. After applying color to the layer, only the checkmark remains (the people and callouts disappear).

Do you know if this is by design? Or is it a known issue in Visio 2016?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
I've been tasked with creating a module that will loop through all (single page) visio files in a folder to pull out all of the comments from each page/file. I've been using the macro in the link below to extract comments.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can loop this code to run through all the files? Or how to create another macro that loops and will call this GetComments() function?

Thank you in advance!!
when I import data into the org chart wizard even tho I indicate I have no pictures, all of the formats include a place for photos. I want to change my org charts to just have a plain box. How can I do that without having to reformat each box?
I'm working on a project where I have 30 pages of diagrams that all interconnect. I have compiled all the diagrams into one document and would like to turn it in to a webpage as the people who need the document don't have access to visio. When I save my visio document as an html file, the web page does not zoom well and the diagrams and words become blurry. In my visio a lot of the boxes had hyperlinks to different sheets within the document. These links did not work once I opened the html file. I had to use the side bar to change pages on the website. Ideally I would prefer users of the website to click on a link in the diagram rather than click on or see the side bar with hyperlinks. Is this possible?

To sum it up, can I save my visio as a web page where the hyperlinks are maintained, users don't have to use the side bar, and zooming in and out of the webpage does not make the graphics and writing blurry.
I have created an application using Visual Studio Professional 2015 (Version 14.0.25431.01 Update 3) that utilizes Visio Viewer (Version 16.0.4339.1001).
When I install my application, I get "Error 1904. Module C:\Program Files (x86)\...\VVIEWER.DLL failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel."
I have researched and not found a solution. I have done all the basics .. windows is up to date, etc.
In my application I reference AxVisioViewer.
The application does run / work correctly - but I am concerned that the end users will not have a good install experience as they see this error during install.
(I also get the similar error when uninstalling - the failed to deregister error 1905).

Visio Viewer must be installed first. In Visual Studio, AxVisioViewer copy local set to yes (it will not work if set to no). Embed Interop Types - False. Specific version - False.
I have tried uninstalling Visio Viewer and installing my app, it will not run without Visio Viewer installed. I have re-installed visio viewer then re-installed my app - same error during installation. As stated, it works - but the user sees this error.
I am using InstallShield LE, and I am digitally signing my app / setup programs
I have a week to learn Visio 2016 to be able to build business process maps. I don't own the SW. Is there a free trial version I can use? I own an iMAC.  THANKS Much!!

I saw a similar questions earlier regarding this subject, but I am still unable to get my excel data imported completely into a org. chart in Visio 2016. I have all of the correct columns and I have only one individual that does not have a "reports to" column, but it will continuously state that I have 80 plus employees with no match. I have tried using the wizard and without the wizard. I have everyone matched up in my excel in the "name" and "reports to" columns. I've been watching tutorials, but can't get past this step. Thank you for any tips!

Microsoft VISIO is a great tool for engineering students. I have used VISIO 2010 for creating all kinds of diagrams and figures and exported them to pdf for LaTEX documents. However, after upgrading to VISIO 2016, the pdf's are now framed. How can I remove those frames ?
Lots of discussions shape data, but I can't seem to find this simple case.

1. I have four rectangles in my drawing. Each rectangle represents a desk. These are the only shapes in the drawing.

2. I have imported an excel spreadsheet using the Custom Import tool (using all the default settings). My spreadsheet has two columns and 5 rows. The Desk_Name column will be the unique identifier.
Desk_Name | Employee_Name
Desk1              | Alice
Desk2               |Bob
Desk3             | Charlie
Desk4             | Alice

3. I want the text field of rectangle 1 to display Alice, rectangle 2 to display Bob, etc. Desk4 is occupied by fourth employee also named Alice. I don't want the Desk_Name displayed. I don't want any text to appear off to the side of the shape, like I see in most of the examples. The only text that should appear inside the rectangle is the employee name.

4. The text inside the rectangles should be updated if I change any of the employee names. I don't expect this to happen automatically; I'll have to hit a refresh button somewhere.

5. *Eventually* the drawing will have up to 144 desks, and of course I will increase the size of the spreadsheet to match.

As I said, total noob with shape data. I know I have to assign a unique identifier (DeskName?) to each rectangle, and I have to link the text field of that shape to a specific excel cell, but I don't know how to start. To me this seems a simple case, but all the examples I've seen are for…

I have created a custom stencil in Visio to capture specific data for a process flow that I can export to Excel. Now that I have mapped out the process, I have started to manipulate the data in Excel. The process, however, has several flows and I need to determine which steps follow each other and are part of the same flow. In Visio this is easy because you can visually see the process, but in Excel everything is listed as a row and it's unclear.

Is there a way to add shape data that will determine the sequencing of the shapes once they are in exported in Excel? Perhaps using the Dynamic Connectors to link the shapes to each other?

I can't get the Excel export to work with a Shape Report when I choose "Shapes on all pages".  It comes back with an error box that has no text and the Excel sheet is never created.  I'm using Vision Professional 2010.

I have an Excel sheet I have inserted on a Visio Page which I would like to use to link to a few text boxes rather than copy the data and manually copy paste to the text boxes.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to link a specific Excel Cell to Visio Text boxes, possibly using the custom formula in the function feature?
We have a computer lab with Office 2013 and for some reason various computers show less/more shapes in Visio Pro 2013 than others.
I can do a search on one computer and find nothing, but the next computer (same image/software) has multiple results.  I've tried googling this but nothing seems pertinent.
We've also noted that searching for the same term (circle, point, truck, whatever) sometimes populates more items the more times we searched.  Are the shapes downloaded as needed from MS?  Students are unable to complete some of their lab work as the shapes are not available, despite being the Professional edition which, to my knowledge, provided all shapes.
We have DeepFreeze on the computers if that matters.
