We have a child company that has the need to separate its IT infrastructure. The child company is still on the same campus, but in 2 different buildings. Would it be feasible to use a separate Vlan and create a separate domain with its own domain controllers, dhcp server, etc.? Would you do it this way or separate the other buildings completely with their own entire infrastructure (obviously way more expensive). Thanks for your input in advance.

I need to add a new switch to our switched network - currently the existing switch is set to the default bridge priority of 32768

The new switch I've set to have a priority of 8192

Will the existing switch remain the root, or will the new switch become the root?

Thanks in advance

Windows 10 Version 1803, not getting applied with any GPOs. The Domain is windows 2008 R2. Updated with Windows 10 April 2018 Update (1803) Policy definitions to the central store.  Tried with  new GPOs but in vain. UNC path access for SYSVOL and NETLOGON are ok from the client side.
Can someone help me out?

Dear Wizards, according to this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_DES, the 3 DES algorithm is
ciphertext = EK3(DK2(EK1(plaintext)))

Why don't they just use like
ciphertext = EK3(EK2(EK1(plaintext)))

What are the differences in terms of security between DK2 and EK2 here? Many thanks!

Devices in remote network can't ping/access QNAP NAS in our network over a VPN tunnel but we can ping them from the QNAP NAS

We know the remote devices as 172.20.20.x through our 172.16.10.3 firewall. QNAP is on our 172.16.10.1 gateway so a route was added to QNAP (route add -net 172.20.20.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 172.16.10.3) through Putty

We can (through putty logged into the QNAP NAS - ping devices in the remote network (172.20.20.94 for instance is a PC I am logged into) but we can't talk the other way - pinging from 172.20.20.94 to QNAP.

Maybe something I don't have enabled in QNAP or the routing isn't quite like Windows?

I can mock up connecting to the QNAP over a VPN through Windows Explorer from my PC (I am offsite but set up similarly) so I know the QNAP allows this. The difference I see is that my VPN doesn't need any routing changing - my VPN is on the firewall that is the gateway the QNAP is on - where the other - we had to add the route as the VPN is on a different firewall.

we have just installed a new exchange 2016 std server, running in a hyperv host.

the server is sending and receiving mail ok and we can access it locally and remotely using owa.

however, when we run outlook 2016 on one of the workstations connected to our domain, it pulls through the local user name and the correct email address, and it establishes network connection. during the searching for user@domainname.co.uk it tells us that we need to restart outlook for these changes to take effect.

selecting ok takes us to the logging on to the mail server and we then receive a warning that “The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action”.

clicking ok produces a red cross on the logging on to the mail server option.

it states “we are having trouble connecting to your account. verify the settings below and make changes if necessary.

putting the correct credentials in the available slots does not resolve the issue.

can anyone help me to resolve this problem.

any advice appreciated.

10gbe network server 2012 essentials windows 2016 essentials.

Have just installed a new 10gbe switch all with Cat6a cable which currently runs into a netgear XS728T

In server 1 running 2012 is a x550t
in server 2 running 2016 is a x722

I have noticed that I have installed on server 1 the new proset drivers which gives me full access to teaming etc, as seen in attached.

Now I've put on jpref and achieve full 100% network usage on the 10gbe cards.

When I go to use windows i Get 150-250mb have checked if it was the disk by using a ram disk and all the raids will easily outperform this. I'm testing a file which is 7gb and not lots of little files.

Thanks

Connecting your computer  to network devices in a large environment.

In a small environment you can connect a Laptop to a router  or a switch and work at the terminal of the device, then disconnect and connect the Laptop to another device and so on...
Or you can use Terminal Server with Octal cable connected to  Terminal Server, and connect the other Ethernet cables that stem from the Octal cable to network devices , then connect the Laptop , if I remember to the Terminal server only, and from there you will be able to connect to  all devices from the Laptop without  unplugging/plugging your Laptop from one device to another.

how can you do that in a large environment, where you have so many network devices dispersed over geographical areas.?

Thank you

Trying to determine the best MTU value w/Sonicwall TZ300 (latest firmware) on a cable connection.

I understand the ping command, then narrow it down till there is zero packet loss then add 28.
The ping test I'm using for example is:  ping www.yahoo.com -f -l 1492

My question is this...

What should the initial MTU settings be on the Sonicwall WAN port when performing the ping test?  Obviously it would cause the ping test to fluctuate.
Thanks in advance.

Limit host connections to a Switch port

sI have the topology above.  I have configured the switch SW  interface e0/0 as shown below

CiscoSwitch(config)#interface e0/0
CiscoSwitch(config-if)#switchport port-security maximum 1
CiscoSwitch(config-if)#

however when I clear the Mac address table  of the Switch, then shutdown the interfaces of H1 and H2 , then bring them back up, the switch will show both Mac addresses of H1 and H2 on the Switch , it should allow just one.

CiscoSwitch#show mac address-table
          Mac Address Table
-------------------------------------------

Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
---- ----------- -------- -----
   1 aabb.cc00.0100 DYNAMIC Et0/0
   1 aabb.cc00.0200 DYNAMIC Et0/0
Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 2
CiscoSwitch#

Thank you

----OK now after a while  I can see one of the Mac addresses disappearing from the table,  then it will show up again on the table,  then the other Mac address will disappear from the table for a while then will show up again.
I guess this happens after aging time .
however the issue of having 2 Mac addresses on the table is still not resolved

I hyave a client who saves individual outlook messages on their client folder on a NAS device.

Outlook works fine sending and receiving emails but wont open saved messages.

It is outlook 2016 which I have reinstalled, excluded that network path on the AV

Any help with this would be appreciated.

I have several of the exact same computer configurations on a network.  We just purchased the same 12 Dell Optiplex computers and I am setting all of them up right now.  They are installed with Windows 10 Pro.  I am accessing the file server to install programs.  On one of the computers, the files are moving super slow and its accessing the server at a super slow speed just on this one computer.  For example, I have Office 2016 installation files on the file server and it is literally taking 30 minutes just for the files to begin installing.  Anything I browse on the server share is very slow to respond.

What could be causing this?

Small office Windows 7/10 deployments made easy is my objective.  Looking for a way to do a Network boot (PXE) of a pre-build Windows operating system to a similar hardware.

For example, we'd like to make a master image of Windows 7 or Windows 10 workstation which is installed on physical hardware (Dell Optiplex 960 is one of our favorites).  Then we'd like to do a P2V (Physical to Virtual) copy the hard drive to a virtual disk in VHD or VHDX format.  Then install a PXE server (possibly Tiny PXE) on an on premise machine so that we can take the hard drive out of the Dell Optiplex 960 and make it diskless and when it's turned on it does a PXE boot and streams the OS across the network (LAN) from the server and clients can use their computer all day long.  When the turn it off at night everything they did is wiped out and when they turn it on again in the morning the OS is started fresh again.  We're aware that Citrix has someone called PVS (Provisioning Server) and that it does this quite well, but we're looking for a simpler and more cost effective way to do so.  At some point we may want to use different hardware so that the Network boot can be for Universal devices like I think Acronis does with some of it's restore features.  But Acronis does a restore to a hard drive and from our knowledge it's not something that can be booted via PXE.

Of course the Master image on the PXE server, we'd control remotely and update by pushing down a new image that we build at the IT …

Hi all

I have my application developed to use the MS Access BE with a re linker provided for those who may be using run time to be able to reconnect to the network shared BE.
Now the challenges comes up with those who I intend to give the SQL server BE, assuming the connection is done at development  level, we all know that many people will be using run time, then how I'm going to resolve the following issues below:

(1) Suppose I compile my FE and put it in run time format, how I'm going to attach the Sql Back End so that it goes with the FE in the same folder like the way we do it if we are shipping the Ms Access Back End. We normally paste the FE & BE in the same folder and zip it and then email to clients who will install the FE in all the user machines and put the BE on the network server and then do connection , that is to say all FEs will be pointing to Server where the BE is. What about SQL server BE how is it done???

(2) If the SQl server BE must be copied as well, then which file do I copy from Sql server??????????

(3) How I'm I going to link all the FE  in run time mode to Sql server BE??????????

if there are some documents somewhere , kindly assit.

Regards

Chris

Hi,

We have a 4mb broadband connection with Sky and when contacting them they are unable to improve the speed due to our location in UK, our neighbour has signed up to a new connection with BT and they have achieved 5mb so we know there is not going to be a magical fix.

Due to a recent house extension we are looking at updating to Sky Q but also aware the current routers wireless range falls about 6 meters short of what we need so what are our options:

1) Will Sky Q with 2 TV's work along with other devices such as phones and a laptop on the current connection?
2) Will a wireless booster box in the extension work?
3) **maybe part of point 2** Is it possible feed a network cable from the current router to where the 2nd TV will be located where it can plug into a second router or a booster which will fed the TV/Sky box by cable and serve the other devices wirelessly?
4) Should we get a second phone line and use 2 *4/5mb connections one for each sky Q box or does sky Q need to use the same router for the subscription to work?
5) Is satellite internet any good?  It looks expensive.

I will really appreciate peoples advice on this as I am not 100% confident Sky would give realistic advice and then my parents would be tied into a £150 bill for 12 months.

Hello community,

I have Googled this topic to death and I cannot find the solution to my problem.  Here is my setup:

Database Server 1:
SQL Server 2014 Developer
WIndows Server 2012 R2 Std

Backup Server 1:
SQL Server 2014 Developer
Windows Server 2012 R2 Std

Backup Server 2:
SQL Server 2014 Developer
Windows Server 2016 Std Eval

On Database Server 1, I have 3 databases: DB1, DB2, DB3.

I have created the following script to back each one up (one-at-a-time) to one of the backup servers:

Mapping Drives:
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use P: /delete'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use Q: /delete'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use P: \\192.168.0.200\Backup_F'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use Q: \\192.168.0.200\Backup_G'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir P:'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir Q:'

Self-signed certificate has expired for Server 2012 Remote Desktop services. I tried using Server Manager Remote Desktop Services Deployment Overview -Tasks- Edit Deployment properties - Certificates. I selected Create new certificate for RD Connection Broker. After creating the certificate and applying the change the Status is OK but the level is untrusted. I attempted to add a certificate to the next role service. I tried both options, apply the existing certificate or choose a different certificate. In each case there was an error 20480 The error message was "Could not configure the certificate on one or more servers. Ensure that the servers are available on the network and apply the certificate again." This is a two server deployment, both servers are online.

Remote Desktop services was working till the cert. expired yesterday. I tried to follow instructions here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRjoGb6DmcA but the option isn't available now that the new certificate is installed.

MacMini (Late 2014) OSX 10.13.4 will not automatically connect to [working] LAN at startup.

“Cannot connect to … an internet connection is required”

Connection using System Preferences/Network is required.

After successful  connection:  select Network Name & selecting “Automatically join this network” LAN connection is established.
‘Location’ set to automatic

After successful session, above is required again after shutdown/startup.

How do I restore the ‘Automatic’ connection?
