Operating Systems

Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. For large systems, the operating system makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other. The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthorized users do not access the system. Operating systems provide a software platform on top of which other programs, called application programs, can run.

I recently migrated data and programs to another laptop, using an application called ZInstall.  Both the original and target notebooks are running Windows 7 Professional SP-1.  The target laptop already had Office 360 installed, which I don't want to use.

My Office 2007 had an issue with launching configuration when a Word document was opened.  This was corrected with a registry modification:
reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\excel\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

However, the same issue occurs with Excel, and it was not resolved with a similar registry edit.  Running Office Repair did not resolve it, either.  It is not possible to uninstall or reinstall Office 2007, and I think this is a known issue when SP-1 is installed on Windows 7.

If you know of a solution, please advise.  However, to save everyone time, please understand that I don't want to change operating systems or software.  I just want to get Excel 2007 to work, if it is possible.
I have a Windows VM (wmware) which had a corrupted os. I tried to unjoin the vm from the domain and I couldnt join it again.

I do have commvault and the VM is registered has a physical host

I am trying to restore it  with a good backup, but it seems that because commvault can't ping the hostname of the server (server was removed from domain) , I am not able to do a restore. What can I do? Is it possible to replace the hostname of the server by its IP temporarly? If yes how?

Destination Client is Grayed Out
My old AD server running 2012 r2 finally bit the dust. While I'm ordering new server hardware, I am also questioning the need for Windows server OS. Originally, I set up a domain as a training and test bed, but gradually I find less need for either. I know originally the server OS was more robust than the client OS's and I wonder if that is still true. However, some of the programs and hardware I have tried in the past to add are not supported by server OS's. So, on balance is there any reason for me to install a server OS on the new server box i have ordered?
Have iMac more than 5 years old....thick panel with CD drive....
I don;t have much experience with Mac's...

It's been sitting in the closed for a few years.....I pulled it out and realized we do not have the admin account pw....

In Windows....which I support....there are a number of boot up CD's (Linux etc) that will boot and allow you to
change any and all passwords....usually change them to "no password"....

Is there a similar boot up CD of some type that I can use to eliminate the admin pw and start all over...???

If not possible.....how would I start all over and wipe the HD and re-install IOS from scratch...???

Many thanks...
Out of the blue my computer started printing out emails, and things from websites  and attachments (attachment-print out fine if I save them to a separate file, but not if I open the attachments directly from the email.  Windows 10 is my OS,   I have checked the printers' settings: which I have not changed.  I have a Canon 1550, and a Okidata C3400N.  Properties are still the same. I think it must be some setting in my computer.  I have rebooted the computer several times as well as the printers.   Any suggestions.
If you have any responsibilities for managing the ICT budget for your organisations, can you share any examples of lessons learned on areas you may have identified or any honest 'mistakes made' where your company was perhaps wasting money.

We have a risk/audit team who do a lot of good focus on cyber security, data protection etc, but some other issues have come to light in recent years where money was being wasted due to poor asset management/monitoring processes (i.e. smartphones that were not even being used by the person given them), which got me thinking what other common mistakes could be being made which may be worth delving further into as part of their cycle of reviews.

Not overly sure what category to add this to so gone with a broad area as I know a lot of participants in these areas often seem to have senior titles in their profiles so may be involved in this type of area or report directly to others who do.
I had to rebuild a domain controller (the only DC in the network).  Ive reinstalled the Windows 2016 std OS.  I have a good backup and have attempted several times to restore using the way of rebooting off the DVD media and running a repair and system image restore - it finds the backup image but everytime I start the recovery it fails with issues that it cant find a drive (ive looked up this error as well and still no luck).   This is a physical server not a VM

So I figure lets just try to restore this with the wbadmin start recovery command.  only issue is I am not sure of the exact command/syntax I will need here.  I need to just restore my C: volume - which was the OS.  I have all the data on the D: volume.

I know after I complete this restore I will need to go back and restore the AD (authoritative) and I have the wbadmin commands for that I believe.

I have a bare metal backup.  unless there really is an easier way to do this that I am missing but Ive been the last 24 hours trying to get this up and running

Can someone with experience with this please help me with some guidance.  I have a completely downed network and need to get this all back up and running.

thank you very much
When I search Google, I'm directed to articles on downloading software often written by the third party offering said software. Another solution I saw was to create enough large files to consume both the free and purgeable space. How can I remove Purgeable Storage Space on Mac OS without downloading a third-party software?

Perhaps a better question is: do I even need to care about cleaning up my drives before I upgrade to Mojave from macOS High Sierra (v10.13.6)?
Hi, I have an issue with IMAP client (Outlook 2013) and a quite large mailbox (about 30 GB).
Outlook is still synchronizing inbox, but this task never completes (and quite often, Outlook crashes so I need to manually kill process and restart it).
I already disabled Kaspersky plugin, which was one of first suspects for this behavior.
OS is Windows 10.
Can you give me some hints to troubleshooting this issue?
Thank you
I have a client with a "bricked" Motorola G6 Phone (e.g. MotoG6). The client can't remember the PIN code and doesn't recall the Google Account associated with the phone.

The phone number is long gone.

Is there a way to reformat this so that it's reset to the factory standards? I've done a half-dozen or so YouTube tutorials, but all rely on the previous Google account to be known.

Is there a way to put the Android OS on an SD card and, for all intent and purpose, "start over"? I've seen the term "root"... is that the same as reinstalling the operating system for Windows (e.g. "nuke and pave")?

I installed Elementary OS on my ThinkStation D30. Problem is, it locks up at about 30 seconds every time I boot it. There are also other things I don't like about it.

So I want to try Fedora, but when I put the Fedora Live CD in and boot the machine, it goes straight back into Elementary OS.

How can I force it to boot to the Fedora DVD?

Thank you in advance!
I have a hard disk that I want to replace with an SSD.   I used EasUS Partition software to migrate the OS to the SSD.   It did not transfer the edntire disk contents, just the recovery seection.
I am using MAIL version 13.0 on OS X version 10.15.3.
In the past (previous used version)Example of colored Email in the Inbox, I was able to color the back ground of the Email coming in my InBox with different colors.
I can still see the one that was colored in the past, but I could not find a way to color them with this version.
We are trying to repurpose a DELL PE T420 server with Server 2016 Standard. When you launch the installation it asks for drivers which should be on the installation disc but it will not recognize any of them. We have downloaded the drivers for OS deployment from the DELL site for this combination but it still will not recognize any of the drivers in that package. This server did not have iDRAC originally so that is not an option.
I did the Win 10 update and after that, I cannot log back in. It gives me an error message saying that the OS was not loaded correctly and needed a reboot. I did that several times. Now, it booted up and I saw the screen but my mouse are not working to click on anything. My laptop is a Thinkpad T540P. How do I get back to Win previous state.
I have again the same problem as here:
I have ordered a PS/2 keyboard which will arrive next week. Until then I wanted to try the same solution and it does not work, because our server was upgraded and my username on the working pc is changed.
One PC, from which I write now, is on a domain, the other with problems is not, but is on the same network and I know its IP. I also know the username and password for login from that blocked computer, where I cannot login.
Before I was able to access remotely the problem computer because the username and password was the same on both PCs.
Now I have a different username on the PC that works and even if there is a share folder on the problem PC, I cannot access it.
It seems that works only when I have the same username.
My question: what can I do to access remotely the problem PC, how can I login remotely knowing its IP and login credentials when I have now different username on my working PC?
My References.cs file (generated by my recent addition of a third party WSDL reference) is very large.  664,293 lines.  Often when I open the file, the Visual Studio 2019 IDE crashes and re-opens.

I guess I am taxing my Windos 10 OS by opening the file?

In Task Manager, CPU % usage jumps when I scroll the file.  So does RAM usage.  I can clearly see that the file is impacting my system.

But my question is not IF the file is large, but what to do about it?

Can the file be compiled somehow, so I still have access to the web methods in the WSDL without having to actually OPEN the References.cs file?  I mean, I know I don't have to OPEN the References.cs file in order to reference the methods, but I can't just delete the file, right?  I want to compress it or compile it or do something so it reduces the impact on my system.
One of the CIS Top 20 controls suggests maintaining an 'Inventory of Administrative Accounts'. Does Active Directory not do this for you though to an extent with the default admin group members such as domain admins which you could query at any point in time?

How do you collect the data to populate such an inventory and what specific groups memberships go into it? In what format do you maintain the inventory and is it dynamically populated or a manual process to keep it up to date? What level do you go down to, e.g. domain, OS, applications/database, applications etc? I appreciate in theory every device/server/database/mailbox could have a differing set of administrators although in practice there would be a lot of commonality across the environment.

Another it suggests in the CIS Top 20 is 'Where multi-factor authentication is not supported (such as local administrator, root, or service accounts), accounts will use passwords that are unique to that system.'. In your experience of doing pen tests/vulnerability assessments, is there any common types of accounts that are common across systems joined to the network that may use the same passwords? I know how such tests take place but having some clue on where passwords are often replicated across systems would be interesting.
I have an extra hardrive and I accidently clickED on MAKE PARTITION AS ACTIVE. Now when my PC boots up, it boots up to that hardrive and it says no OS is present. I had to unplug that drive so that it can load from my main hardrive. It looks like the MAKE PARTITION AS ACTIVE is greyed out so I could not reset. How do I fix this? Thanks
How to use a mouse or trackpad on iPad Pro with iPadOS

I have 2 TrackPads, both work with my Mac - OS Mojave 10.14.6.

I have been unsuccessful pairing them with iPad Pro - iPad OS 13.3.1

All is wireless here.

I have read conflicting accounts about this pairing - some Yes, some No

Has anyone accomplished this - if so, How?

I recently had to upgrade my MacBook Pro to Catalina, but in the process, it appears VMWare Fusion was impacted.  Now, when I started up my VM guests, they do load, but they load with a black screen.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

I am now chekcing why my PC's USB sometimes work but not all the time and I see this in device manager console:

usb 3.1 driver
anyway to chagne it to USB 3.1 driver ?

my PC has 3.1 port but very slow, now most likely because of this.

and my laptop has 3.1 port has this driver shown 3.1
Currently working on a late 2013 MacBook pro and it has started to freeze at random times, to the point it will reboot. I have done a time machine, formatted the hard drive, and reinstalled the basic OS and upgraded to the current OS. It seems to want to freeze without much reason or which program could be causing it. I have first aided the drive, and the diagnostics came back fine. What could be causing the freeze, and how hot does the outside of the laptop normaly run? As of right now, its anywhere from 117-115F above the row of Fkeys
Dear Friends

We are trying to migrate the existing Win 2008 ( not R2) to newly acquired hardware with OS Standard 2019. Is there any documentation / step by step guide to assist me.

Thanks & Regards
