Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. For large systems, the operating system makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other. The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthorized users do not access the system. Operating systems provide a software platform on top of which other programs, called application programs, can run.

Client laptop will not boot with secure boot and existing OS install.  HDD has bad sectors and was cloned to a new HDD, which will not boot and startup repair has not been able to fix.  A clean install will boot and work properly.  Client would prefer repair of existing OS over clean OS install.  BIOS cannot disable secure boot.  Haven't found a reason behind this yet.  I will be updating BIOS next (using different HDD), if a simple solution is not found first.

Hi All,

We are planning to upgrade our domain controllers from 2008. We currently have two sites and the plan is to have a domain controller at each site for failover / disaster purposes. Unfortunately at the second site we are only running VMware 5.5. This will be getting upgraded soon, but not in time for the Domain upgrade. As far as I'm aware 5.5 will only support guest operating systems up to 2012. Can I / is it advisable to upgrade the first DC straight to 2016 and then introduce the 2nd DC at the second site as 2012. Or to upgrade the Domain / DC to 2012 at the second site and then introduce the 2016 DC at the primary site. Will the two live happily together until the VCenter upgrade?

Cheers,
Paul

Hello,

I have upgraded an MDT Environment to use the 1903 ADK, along with the 1903 WinPE upgrade.
After the upgrade, I then proceeded to upgrade the deployment shares.

After the upgrade, I captured a Windows 10 1809 WIM, which does complete successfully.
I then try to deploy the new Window 10 1809 WIM using the OSD Task Sequence we have but as soon as it gets passed the installing of the OS and reboots it fails to continue the build sequence.
It just logs in as Administrator and sits there.

If I got to the C:\ drive I can see the bootstrap.vbs along with the relevant MDT deployment folders.
It just fails to run it at first logon.
If I manually run the bootstrap.vbs, the build continues and completes...

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hello,

We have a strange issue with our new installation of server 2019 where we are trying to install per user CAL's. We have installed them OK however as you can see below the license has become case sensitive so if any user changes the case of any letter it will use an additional CAL. This was not the behavior in our old OS (windows 2008).

Can anyone please advise why this might be? We have tried Google suggestions of removing license and renaming RD database to rebuild it and adding the license pack again.

Thanks

Hi, We are looking to deploy a server to a small SME client. As they are small business we are considering using Server 2019 Essentials. My question relates to whether we can install a basic 2019 OS on the server and then add the Hyper-V role to this. We would then install 2019 Essentials as the main OS but this would be virtualized. Effectively I suppose im asking if Server 2019 Essentials has the same licensing rights as server 2016/2019 standard in regards to 1 base server and 2 Hyper-V servers.

When right clicking on a file with an random unassociated file extension and selecting the Open With option I am subsequently presented with a list of applications that the OS suggests to open the file.
Here's the kicker.
The application (Nitro PDF) that I need to be on the right click menu isn't and because it's Citrix i can't browse to the executable when using the "Look for another app on this pc".
There must be a registry settings that allow you to:
Add an application to the right click Open With menu when the file has no file association.
Every app that is there by default must be there as a result of a registry setting.
Has anyone managed to add one via the registry?

I was asked on an interview, where do you get IT security info regarding IT security.  I drew a blank since the only know a couple of CVE websites.  What would be a proper answer and where should I be looking?

Upgrading LTSB 2015 or 2016 to Windows 10 Enterprise 1903 (May 2019).

Are there any In-Place upgrades that can help me upgrade Windows 10 with the 1903 ISO media direct from LTSB 2016 / ltsb 2016?

I am looking for help to come up with an approach to this to save time reinstalling 100 plus machines from older versions of windows 10. Versions I have to upgrade are:

LTSB 2015
LTSB 2016
Professional or Enterprise N

Any help or input on this I would greatly appreciate.

Hi guys, Just been wandering around the net and found the site below

Which is saying don't trust a web domain less than a month old.  The question is how to test the age of a domain. Moreover where on win 10 OS should I test for Age. Firewall, AV or elsewhere?

Hello,

I have a Power 9 system with OS 7.2. This was installed on May and I have ACS (Access Client Solutions) in every computer. Everything was working fine but suddenly some computers loss connection with the Power 9,a black screen appears and after a few minutes is reconnected with the system.

I checked the system with the wrkactjob and the session on the PC was still active. Also when this happens I used netstat *cnn command and I can see how the ip for that pc says time-wait several times. I do not know why suddenly this is happening.

Any help will be appreciated.

Please find the scenario

A corporate environment in which none of the systems having an internet connection, all the system are installed with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS. We had upgraded it to windows 10 pro using same windows 7 product key. Now please let me know is there any provision for activating the os without a direct internet connection to the systems.

we have already tested the following scenarios

1. Activated one of the systems successfully with a direct internet connection
 2. Activated Via Proxy server, that is also working
3. Try to activate via Microsoft volume activation management tool it is showing an error "The Activation server reports that the product key has been blocked"

Please help us to solve the issue

Dear Experts,

A colleague has following issue :
"I can't open any of the invitation I sent on Outlook where I have added Skype for Business. Outlook crashes and restarts automatically.
It means I can't change the content of an invite or see who has confirmed my invite.
The problem does not occur for invitations I received from others or for invitation I have created without adding Skype for Business.
Clearly the problem is linked to Skype. I have done a test right now: after closing Skype for Business Task (task manager) and I could open an invite without any problem."

OS : Windows 10 - Outlook 365 (32 bit  / Skype for business for Office 365 (32 bit).
'repairing online" Microsoft office unfortunately doesn' t help/   re-create a new profile in Outlook doesn"t help also..
What can be done?

Thank you

Hi,  I'm having a really tough time getting a MDT 2013 task sequence to finish the last 2 steps -

Gather local only
Create WIM

The WIM I'm trying to create is to be my reference image.  As such, I'm using a Hyper-V virtual machine as my hardware platform.  Everything boots fine and the task sequence works just fine.  I can see the prior steps "Apply Windows PE (BCD)" running - and the subsequent reboot.  Unfortunately for me, what happens next is after the box restarts, it  begins the issuance of messages related to a new user logging into Windows 10 -  and ultimately loads the local administrator's desktop.  I wait for the task sequence progress bar to popup - but it doesn't ever start back up.  A few times I've manually run ltibootstrap.vbs to see if I can restart it.  It will actually run the last two steps, but it creates a WIM in 10 seconds that is about 4MB.
I've been poring over the log files trying to find out what is causing the final steps to not run, but can't find anything that stands out to me.  Can anybody help me to understand at least what is going on?  Am happy to post log files on request.

Many thanks - Adrian

Hello, this is my first time working with one of these stream laptops but I am trying to reload the OS on it due to it will not boot up, gets a blue screen with inaccessible boot device, then it will go to preparing automatic repair and stay there. I have run the extended diagnostic tools for all hardware and the hard drive past the test, so I am trying now just to do a system recovery. If I try to rest the PC with Keep my file or remove everything or startup repair, it prompts me to enter the user name password which I don't have. Also if I do a reset and choose to remove everything I get additional free space is needed on the drive where windows is installed, free up some space and try again error. Any suggestions?

We have just migrated to Sharepoint Online (SPO) from an on-premise Sharepoint instance. The migration went fine. All of the libraries look and behave as expected and we have now gone "live" with the new sites.

As a part of the design of this migration, it was decided that we would setup all SPO libraries such that all links to SPO library documents (no matter what format or file extension) would be opened not by the browser-based version of the Office 365 app, but instead they would open using the locally-installed Office application. We decided on this setting because not all of our end users have the very newest version of Office 365 (subscription-based license model) installed. Some have an older volume license installation of Office 2013 and some have an even older VL version of Office 2010. All are licensed for O365 under our enterprise agreement, but not all of them have the actual O365 version of the PC app suite installed.

One of the pre-migration assumptions (that we were assured was true by the way) was that we made was that SPO links to library documents would open in Office apps. This is usually true but not always. some of our users are not able to open Word, Excel and other documents if they have Office 2010 or Office 2013 installed, where other users with the same VL packages installed have no difficulties opening exactly the same documents while using the same SPO library, same document link, same OS and same browser.

When the affected users (so …

Hi all

I'm currently experiencing an issue for a user who is unable to use the zoom function on an RDS 2016 environment.

The user is running a HP Thin Client running the HP OS (there are no custom scaling options within the rdp program itself).

So far I have tried the custom scaling option in Control>Appearance and Personalization>Display which didn't work.

I've also tried logging the user into the RDS within Hyper-V Manager, changing to 125% zoom then logging back into the RDS which defaults back to 100% (note that we're using User Profile Disks).

If anyone else has any ideas I would really appreciate it. I've read a fair few articles online but none seem to work or are relevant to this scenario.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi All,

We have just installed a new Server for a client, HP Proliant ML30 G10.

Installed the OS fine with RAID1 etc.

Installed onsite, attached the 5 machines to the domain and noticed ping tests from the Server to google.co.uk, bbc.co.uk etc and the router on 192.168.1.1 dropped every 45 seconds.

We have tested the below with the same issue.

Tried NIC1 and NIC2
Tested a USB to LAN adapter
Updated all firmware and drivers
Ran an ESET and Malware scan in safe mode
We can ping machines on the same network with any drops

We have tested in safe mode with network and it doesn't drop any pings....

Any help would be great
thanks

After rebuilding on prem server (rest in Azure), users at the location randomly get the errors when saving or opening a recent file, "location is not available". More rare, a user may not be able to access a specific share with the error "element not found" (reboots resolve this). The first error will go away if they open Explorer, navigate to the folder, then return to the application and hit save/open. If a user is using explorer (file, not IE) and go many folders deep, and click on the address bar to go up a few folders, they sometimes get "location not available". But, if they  click on the root of the drive, they can immediately go back to where they wanted.

Our environment is Windows 2012R2. The server is also a DC. We are running DFS to a single Namespace, mapped to a single drive letter (z:) to all users via GPO. Our DFS replicates to 3 other servers in other sites, none which exhibit the same issues. All clients are Windows 10 May update.

What I have done so far...

Updated and verified all firmware, drivers, and OS updates.
Ran DCDIAG tests. (no errors)
Ran REPADMIN tests. (no errors)
Checked client and server for relevant errors in system logs (no relevant errors)
Verified all file and share permissions (all shares use "authenticated users", perms set at file level
Had users manually disconnect drive and rerun gpupdate to remap drive

When a user accesses the share via the namespace (wii.local\cloud), they will still randomly get the error.  I have …

How do you apply Hyper-V Licences.
This is not a question on how to licence based on the cpu core count and number of VM's to run- I know all that and have purchased the licences.
I have a combination of 1 x 16 Core and a number of 2 core licences to take me to the correct number based on CPU core count and the number of VM's I want to run.

The question is - how and where to apply all these licence numbers/codes.
Do I apply all of them in the Host OS (yes I am running a Hyper-V host) and then the Guest OS's (all Server 2019 Std) will be automatically licensed?
Do I have to license each individual Guest and if so how many Licenses do I apply to each guest and what happens if I then reduce or increase the CPU count with in the Guest?
DO I have to install A KMS server software and place all the license keys in that and then point each server to the KMS server?

As you can see, I have no glue on how to apply the licences keys I have to the Host and Guest OS's.
I have been unable to locate a document or thread that instructs how to do what has to be a easy task.

I thank you very much for all input/help

Regards

Brian
