Operating Systems

Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. For large systems, the operating system makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other. The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthorized users do not access the system. Operating systems provide a software platform on top of which other programs, called application programs, can run.

We have a legacy ESX 5.1 cluster that has a 2TB disk limit. We are approaching situations on file servers
where we need to go beyond that. We're looking at disk pooling and disk spanning to do so. Which technique
is considered to be safest?? OS is Win2k12 R2.

what are some of the more common tools/methods used when you have a large workforce and therefore a large number of end user devices, e.g. laptops/desktops, to help speed the build process of lets say new laptop devices? I assume there must be some sort of standard image that can be installed onto the HDD of new devices rather than manual process each time. can you give some info on desktop/laptop side? and what kind of settings/configurations are typically included in the golden build, specific to the OS/apps? I appreciate this is very vague but just wondered the process.

and is it also common to have a similar 'image' for server OS and apps, that can be quickly issued to a new VM? Again, what are the common tools/methods used and and what kind of settings/configurations are typically included in the golden build, specific to the OS/apps? Is it typically only the OS which is included int he build, or is it common to have a quick to deploy image with common server apps such as SQL, IIS etc?

we are looking at the CIS top 20 cyber security controls which recommends standardising many settings as part of the build process, so getting some background what tools deploy these 'images' (may not be the correct term) to new equipment would be most interesting.
MY OS is Windows 7 and it's showing unstoppable prompt called " cannot find ///  Fast Hardlock driver! " and i've tried deleting and creating new VDD value but that didn't workout. Suggest me solution in a clear and step wise Manner Please!!
Our customer has very old backups, 20 or more years.
Those where done with WINRAR and winzip of those days.

there are two issues.
1. Are we able to read those formats today ? Or are we supposed to, lets say, every 5 years convert those backup files to latest formats?
Is there any software that will do that for us automatically? Auto update itself and auto migrate the backup files to the new format ?

2. The second point is the storage device, usb connections improve they get faster and better, devices need drivers updated, according to new versions of OS
So I guess we have no choice than to move all every 5 years to new devices ?

HOw reliable would it be if we store in the Cloud? and is it advisable only the cloud ?
How are companies doing this around the world ?
Hello everyone,

I have tried everything to solve my problem together with 5 other tech gurus. There is only one solution left that we couldn't figure out, that is running system restore on windows xp (I use it for old software).

System restore points started to fail to complete and now they are vanishing. Even though there is enough space, system restore is working fine (recent restore point complete successfully) and restore points aren't corrupted since I've ran them successfully a couple of weeks ago.

The problem is that the restore point that I know works fine and could fix everything (I know because I've ran it before) is no longer visible in system restore but seems to be still in the system volume information folder.

My question is if there's a way to make the restore point visible in system restore or if there's a way to run system restore from somewhere else like from the system volume information folder.

Please do not suggest an OS reinstall. If you need further clarification, do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks in advance.

We have this problem in a Clustered File Server Server. Microsoft sent us these instructions but I'm still not sure if I could solve the problem. I would appreciate knowing if someone has had a similar case.

When not being able to execute the tasks of maintenance the hard disk this almost to the limit in spite of delete archives.

De-duplication jobs are unable to complete. It will remain in queued state. Due to which D: and F: drive space is getting full.

Disk ManagementHi,
I have an internal hard drive that seems to have lost information about boot section after attempting "Restore to factory settings" on the laptop.
Having realized that it started "restore to factory settings", the user powered off the laptop, but when it was turned back on, OS was gone and it failed to boot.
So I hooked up the hard drive to another PC and ran Disk Management and this is what I see.
When I open "My Computer", I see:
 (1)  O "HP_RECOVERY" drive which has folders like "boot", "efi", "FIRTOOLS", "sources" and files like "SYstemrecovery", bootmgr.efi, HP_WINRE
 (2)  L (64GB NTFS) Drive:  empty
 (3)  K (SYSTEM 1GB): it has tow items. "Recovery" folder and SYSTEM file.
I think "619.25GB - Unallocated" is where Windows OS and user folders used to be stored.
Is there a tool that I can use to look at the contents of  "619.25GB - Unallocated"?

My Toshiba Satellite C55-B5202 is all messed up after trying to update drivers. The Intel drivers were uninstalled and after trying to refresh the laptop I see drivers for Vista, Windows 7 and other OS instead of Windows 8.1 x64. Windows Search is now Win 7, my Intel drivers are Vista now so the PCI, USB, Video/Audio, Network and other drivers are wrong and won't update to Windows 8.1 drivers when I try to update them. The BIOS info is missing important hardware information and I can't figure out how to add the part numbers & other product info to get proper product support using the Toshiba software loaded to repair what is wrong & update what can be updated. Even the BootMgr says it's a Vista OS KB file from Microsoft so I'm not even getting Windows 8.1 when I start up the laptop.

When I go to the Toshiba support website and enter C55-B5202 the "manuals & specs" tab has the PDF with detiled info on Model Name, Part Number & UPC and tells me basic info on the laptop's features... but the "drivers & updates" tab has incorrect links/info that either don't get installed when I try to install something, or the incorrect OS version is installed even though I selected "Windows 8.1 64-bit".

The page that comes up for thedrivers & updates link for my machine & OS version is https://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1200008359&osId=38

The BIOS links are for machines with the product numbers PSCLUx & PSCLYx which is Satellite C50x-B/C55x-B  laptops.

Hello Experts,

I am looking for some assistance on how to create a AD service account that can manage Computer objects.  The account needs to join/remove/rejoin computers to the domain.  It also needs to be able to disable computer objects and move them between OUs.

I have been able to setup the account to join/remove/rejoin to the domain, and able to disable computer accounts.  The real issue I cannot get past is not being able to move the computer objects between OUs.  I receive an error:  "Windows cannot move object <machinename> because: Access is denied.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.  I have not been able to find documentation that has worked for this issue.

Thank you,
we are facing issue in one of our web application it works fine locally .Response Time on internal network  is 4ms but when we try to access it from out side  web application open but took long time to load the files. My OS is win 10 pro and I have an msn email account.  My login somehow got changed to use my email address.  How this got changed is a mystery.  So I now use my email address password to login.
I am trying to have separate passwords when I login into my pc and also my email account.  I changed my email.
But I do not know how to change my User account password, and would like to seek expert advise else I may lock myself out.  Is it ok to create a duplicate Admin user as a backup?

MAC OS - Terminal command to clear RecentDocuments?

defaults delete com.apple.Preview RecentDocuments
Domain (com.apple.Preview) not found.
Defaults have not been changed.

defaults delete com.apple.finder RecentDocuments
Domain (com.apple.finder) not found.
Defaults have not been changed.

I need to be able to clear the Recent Documents on my Macbook which currently shows the last 1500+ items I've opened.
The APPLE Logo, Recent Items, Clear Menu doesn't clear the items in Recents when I open Finder.

Anyone got a quick and easy way to do it via Terminal?

By the way, to clear all the up arrow / down arrow history in terminal type history -c and press ENTER.
I have Created am multisight clustering . My Nodes are up Added the Volume also which s online but my cluster is showing offline. Please suggest. Its a virtual environment and WK16 version of OS.
Android phone has locked out.
Will not allow me past the setup page (states illegal reset - but re-set process is the same as done previously), to re-enter account details.

Is there a way to get passed this?

Not sure I really engage with this new layout.
Seems to convoluted and back to front.
My goal is to boot a machine into windows, start a screen saver with looping pics/ads, wait until everything is cached in RAM, remove the thumbdrive, then repeat the process with another machine of identical hardware makeup. If the machine loses power, I want nothing to remain. I plan on nuking all the scheduled tasks and disabling as many services as I can without crashing windows, along with nuking things like the page file which require a logical volume.
I'm using WinToUSB to build a bootable windows machine in a USB thumbdrive, but I'm almost certain that things will crumble if I remove the thumbdrive after windows is booted and in a stable state, even if I turn off things like superfetch and the page file which rely on and frequently access the local logical volume.
I thought about trying a Windows to Go workspace, but it appears to have a built in function that freezes the machine for 60 seconds and then turns off the machine if the thumbdrive isnt reinserted
I would love to know if anyone knows how to accomplish this

I've received several complaints from users- of PC locking up and slow response time when login.  The only recent changes I've made was upgrading to Symantec Endpoint Manager version 14 from 12.xx
I went to invent viewer and I noticed the WMI error 0x80041003.  I googled the error and I'm getting tones of workaround but no fixes.
The OS Win7 prof- located in a closed area and no internet access and no latest patches either.
I tried to run this fix from MS but it didn't solve the problem and only stopped the error-
Does anybody else seen this before and do you have a permanent fix ? I can't reimage the PC and fixing the problems is what I'm hoping to accomplish.

So i have created a task sequence that deploys with USB media and it does deploy however when i try to boot to the OS that deployed it doeskin detect the drive as bootable in UEFI if i use bios it works. the only way i can get it to boot is going into the options and telling it to boot to efi file and finding the one for windows. any suggestions??
I have a customer with a Windows 10 Pro system. When he print a web form from Chrome, the preview looks fine, but the form prints out  shifted to the left a 1/4 inch. As a result the first two characters in each row are not printed. This happens on multiple printers. Everyone else in the company prints correctly.

Hey all I have a  Server 2017 setup with my domain name on it that looks like this:

When I use my  Windows 10 machine to RDP into that I use the above as my computer using either or somethinghere.com. This connects just fine to my server machine from my Windows 10 machine.

I have 2 VMs running also on my Server 2017 machine. Each of those VMs are running Windows 10 32bit OS. I have also changed the RDP port of each VM to 3390 and 3392, respectively. I also gave each VM a static IP address of and And each VM's firewall has been turned off in order to rule that out of the equation right now. No antivirus software is installed as well on either.

Now from my Windows 10 machine, I use RDP again to RDP into those VMs.

First I test it out using the static IP I set for each of them (VMs). When I place either IP address into the RDP it loads up the VM just fine for me to view.

I have done another test and use my Domain name to see if I can connect to it that way as well. I use somethinghere.com:3390 and somethinghere.com:3392 and again, I am able to connect to those WMs via my Windows 10 OS.

However, the issue is when I try using my own C# RDP code it seems to not connect to the VM outside of my Windows 10 machine. It connects just fine if I run it within Visual Studio 2017 which is on my Windows 10 machine. Once I run that same program on the Server 2017 machine
I have a user who is having trouble with windows update on their home computer that I, unfortunately, provide troubleshooting support for.  They have windows update enabled and configured to install updates for other MS updates, particularly. MS Office 2010.  OS is Win 7.   Earlier this year, they ran into the problem with the Microsoft authcab expiring on 12/3/17 on their site, which interrupted the functioning of all updates.

That was resolved, and windows updates are working again.  But it is not finding any office updates, even though it is still configured to do so.  We turned off office updates, reset the ShownFirstRunOptin regkey, and reenabled them.  No errors.

But still, no office updates are being found.    Any suggestions for how to resolve/troubleshoot?  Thanks!
Hello, I have a interesting situation. Two different servers with 2012 and 2016 OS. Both servers have shared folders and mapped to the clients workstations. The clients workstations are windows 7 and 10 pro. in both situations they can not rename folders. Even when I log in to the server as a administrator i can  not rename it. Funny thing that I can rename the individual files in these folders. I have checked the permissions. Also if I copy that foldr that I can not rename in a shared folder to my server desktop i can do what ever i want. Administrator has full permissions . Security and sharing. I have Malware Bytes End point and symantec end point installed. Please help. Truely appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
