Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. For large systems, the operating system makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other. The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthorized users do not access the system. Operating systems provide a software platform on top of which other programs, called application programs, can run.

I have a user who would like to run the current Windows 10 operating system running on his Lenovo laptop as a VMware virtual machine within the Mac operating system.

We will purchase a Windows 10 Pro license to activate Windows 10 running as the Mac virtual operating system.

What is the process for doing this?

Hello I have been asked to set a new Active Directory Site from scratch to mirror a Domain with at least 8 other sub domains no migration will be taking place just the existing naming conventions taken and then set up the platform that I will be using is 2012 OS, I will be setting up a new DHCP, DNS, Cert server.etc. I would apprechieate any advice on how to start achieving this and any really good tools for making the transistion nice and easy.

For patching I used Tanium before on cross platforms environment.  Multiple OSs. MS, unix, mac.  Unfortunately Tanium only serves for a very large customers.  What would be an alternatives to Tanium?
I heard Kace is great and easy to deploy?

Thanks in advance!

If the USB Flash Drive is big enough, can you partition it? Example, make a USB bootable, have a folder with documents etc?

I have installed Server 2012 R2 and created 2 VMs (VM-1 a DC and VM-2 a member computer) both running Server 2012 R2. The test bed server I am using has 2-120 GB SATA SSD for the OS in a RAID 1 and 2-1 TB SATA hard drives in a separate RAID 1 configuration for the data storage. They are controlled by the Dell PERC card. I would like for the member computer, VM-2 to be able to access the data volume and see it as just another hard drive with a drive letter. This is a work in progress for me as I am learning and reading articles on how to do this. As a side note when I created the Hyper V folder (300GB) to hold the VM files, I was able to see the data volume from the Hyper V host and located the Hyper V folder there. I was not sure of how much space the VM files would require as the system space requirements grow. I would have preferred to locate them on the SSD...however.
On the member server VM-2, SQL Express, RDS and a business management application will be installed. It should have about 500GB available. All of this will be required to be backed up nightly. Your help and comments are appreciated.
Thanks - HBee3

Just throwing it out there....
It has been suggested that to create a faster machine/ OS from boot up to logging onto the desktop is create an image of Windows 7 (x64) and Office 2016 (x86) but dont worry about installing the correct drivers to a laptop or PC, just use the windows generic ones.

So it would be...
Install Windows 7 on PC
Install Office 2016
Install Updates
SysPrep
Deploy Image

What I want to get back from the wonderful community are peoples views on the pros and cons of this....

Before people go off topic - I know using a SSD, improving the RAM and buying a new PC would all increase the speed of start up and loggin on, but this is re using 3 years + hardware.

Hi Guys,

I am currently testing the functionality that is offered by the Active Directory Home folder.

I have set myself up with a home folder in AD and after doing this I restarted my PC and I could see the home folder I mapped (letter drive H) and I can also see that my documents/pictures etc have also been re-pointed to my home folder location. As I am aware this is what happens by default when creating a home folder.

but when I logged into another PC with the same user account and very similar PC (same OS build etc). I can see my H drive home folder but it has not re-directed my documents etc. this is now pointing locally at the C drive (normal location).

so why did the first time I log on all my documents got re-directed to the home folder and on the second attempt at logging in on a different PC under same user I got the home folder but no re-direction on the documents folder etc?

am running a windows xp OS on my Pentium III dell computer. one day I was restoring my other programs to my system that were once deleted. one of the program restored was the avast antivirus which was expired sometime back and it needed to update. however, before updating it, I tried to run it. it started showing that it detects some file as infected and asked to delete, delete all, move to chess, move to chess all, repair, repair all....... Thinking deleting the infected files would be best, I commanded it to delete all. so it deleted a lot of files. at last, I had to reboot the system, and from then when I boot the computer, it only shows me this error message:

 STOP: c0000139 {Entry Point Not Found} The procedure entry point wcsncpy_s could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll.

Nothing happens apart from restarting itself when I boot it in the safe mode. when boot it in the windows restore directory, it checks the system and gives the results as follows:

System Checking D:
the volume is clean
System Checking C:
the volume is clean

My CD-ROM doesn't work. when I insert a cd, it just runs and finally stops, no reading.

So is there any solution to rectify the problem so that I the system should be finishing booting? Thanks in advance for your help.

A few end users are reporting that when they try to search for an email, they get a message that Outlook is still indexing. This is a newer problem that started the last week of June, first week of July. We're suspecting it might be caused by another Microsoft Update that went wrong but cannot fully support that theory. This is not tied to a specific OS as we have reports from both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro users.
We have a hybrid Exchange environment, hosting our own on-prem Exchange 2010 server and using Microsoft Office 2010 while our Archives are hosted through Microsoft. Logging on to our webmail the searches do complete without any hiccups.
So far on one affected user (since we don't know the root cause yet) we have rebuilt the Outlook index, recreated the Outlook profile, restarted the indexing service, moved indexing store location, and moved this user out of cached mode. The only thing for this end user that has worked thus far is taking them off of cached mode. We know this is only a temporary band aid and a solution is out there somewhere, we just haven't found it yet so we are reaching out to see if anyone else has been experiencing this sudden oddity and if so, has anyone found the resolve?

Thank you in advance,

I had this question after viewing Excel 2010 Keeps Crashing.

I am having a similar issue.  I have a macro enabled workbook that saves a copy of one of the worksheets as a new workbook.  Excel crashes after the worksheet is exported.  The OS is Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have an HP Thin Client that I came into owning.  I am just messing around with it and trying to set it up to run Netflix.  It only has 2GB of RAM and 1GB of HDD.  What is a Linux (GUI) OS that I can install on it?  The Thin Client software I tried over and over, but it just did not leave enough room to update Firefox to work with Netflix, so I'm scrapping that idea.

I have tried the 'rm -rf' on the folders that it says online are the cache folders for chrome, but was only lucky with clearing 1of the folders - ~/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome/Default/Cache.  I tried manually deleting the files from the other folder that a search result said was another chrome cache folder but the cookies did not clear.

Stopped there, wondering if anyone has invented this wheel?  I am using Sierra OS X.  Thanks, Dawn

Hi everyone,

So I've spent the past week reading and trying to understand the python language and more importantly the CherryPy web framework.
To be honest Im getting no-where quickly...

What I'm trying to do is simply build a frontend to a Raspberry Pi project I've been developing.
The CherryPy web framework seems perfect for this as it is small and contains its own web server that would suite my needs perfectly.

An admin user attaches to the Raspberry PI AP and is immediately directed to a webpage (This I have solved quite easily).
The webpage is presented by the CherryPy web server.

I have an index.html which it returned from my CherryPy script.

import os, os.path, sys
import cherrypy

# Configuration file to access server over network and define ports
cherrypy.config.update("server.conf")

class menu(object):
    @cherrypy.expose
    def index(self):
        return open('index.html')

(Fairly simply until now I know)

What I would like to do is have buttons on my index.html that can be pressed and return os.system('mkdir boom')  (obviously my system commands will be a little more than this.. They will start and stop services.

The buttons will eventually be toggle switches, so going to the page will need to return the current status of the running process. Red if the process is not running and Green if it is running. I think I need to be interacting with jquery on my index.html page to achieve this...

This whole area is new to me and …

It's easy! Check out this step-by-step guide for asking an anonymous question on Experts Exchange.

How can you find out when wsusoffline.net has updated its site to the latest published patches. For instance it is Patch Tuesday tomorrow so there is little point spending time updating offline computers until the newest patches releases have been incorporated in the wsusoffline site.

My OS is win 10 prof 64 bit, and I installed the latest version of iTunes but my mobile phone still did not show up on iTunes.  my mobile is a LG MS323 phone.   I even bought a new usb cable from bestbuy.  During my research I found that I had to install the version 12.1 of iTunes, so I tried to uninstall the  latest version first thru Revo Uninstaller and when that failed thru the Control Panel.  But it looks like there are traces of the latest iTunes left as when I installed the version 12.1 the attached file show the error I got.
How do I do a clean uninstall of all traces of iTunes, or how do I fix this problem.  Thank  u.

In Mac OS X and in both Firefox and Chrome, latest versions, new email in AOL doesn't appear unless I click on another folder such as Old Mail and then click on New Mail.

In the past, from time to time, I've had to follow this MO to see new mail, but now the site no longer delivers new mail automatically.

The fact that this is occurring in two browsers leads me to feel that this is an AOL problem and nothing I can at the moment do anything about. But your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.
