Page Layout Software

Page layout, also known as desktop publishing, is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page. It generally involves organizational principles of composition to achieve specific communication objectives. With print media, elements usually consist of type (text), images (pictures), and occasionally place-holder graphics for elements that are not printed with ink such as die/laser cutting, foil stamping or blind embossing. Commonly used programs include Adobe PageMaker and InDesign, Corel Ventura, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Publisher and Xara, along with more specialized programs such as TeX, LaTeX and LyX.

Today we copied QuarkXPress 9.50 files from a Windows 2008R2 file server to X200 Isilon v7.2.0.5 storage device.  RoboCopy was used to copy the files from Windows server to the Isilon storage device.  We have confirmed that it was a clean copy because excel and word files can be opened and save.  This also shows that the user has write permissions to the files on the Isilon.

QuarkXPress is running on a Windows 7 desktop.  It appears when Quark v9 opens a file it either corrupts it opening it or when it saves it. The following error messages are displayed when opening a previously saved file

This document cannot be opened by this version of QuarkXPress (16)
or
This project is locked.  Changes cannot be saved.  (315)

If the file does open, it cannot be saved.  Only the save as option is available.

In the QuarkXPress open file form it displays the version number of the selected file.  Clicking on a file saved on the Isilon indicates the version number is not known.

Looking for any ideas how to resolve this issue.

I have a report that prints a list of items and then their total.  There are groups (such as all the percentage discounted items are grouped together and the flat value discounted items are together, and the like) but the user does not want any subtotals.

I put the grandtotal in the page footer.  I was going to put the grandtotal in the report footer, but there is a proprietary statement that has to show up at the bottom of each page.  So here is what I did, and so far it is almost working:

I put both the grandtotal and the proprietary statement in the page footer (the grandtotal line above the proprietary), and put some code in to see if it is a one page report or a multipage report.  If it is a one page report, the page footer prints normally, if it has more than one page, the grandtotal area controls are set to white so that the user does not see them, on the previous pages and then on the last page the controls are set back to black.

Now here is the issue.  This actually works except sometimes the report will print with a second page with no details lines on it but the grandtotal is at the bottom.

How does Access decide there should be multiple pages?  To me, when I see the report with all the records filling the detail section, should only be one page, but the pages property shows 2, and like I said there is nothing in page 2's detail section.

I hope this makes sense.

Hey Everyone,

My client has tasked me with updating outdated documentation. The content includes old screenshots that must be replaced. A few of the screenshots contain annotations in balloons (for lack of a better word) which I need to recreate. e.g.

Sample of Screenshot with Annotation
As I don't know who wrote this document, I can't reach out to this person to ask what tool they used. I know this question is a bit nonstandard, but can anyone take an educated guess? :)

Thanks,
Steve

Can someone point me to blogs, sites, magazines and videos on how to lay out text and graphics on a flyer or poster. And choose colors.  Using templates are okay.  But how about if you need to design something from scratch.

I have a large PDF (700 pages). I want to create a table of contents from the contents page in the document. I want a link for every chapter in the book.

I want to read the book in the kindle desktop for windows app and to be able to easily navigate between chapters.

I've looked high a low to find a solution but so far haven't been successful.

Supposedly  Calibre is the software to use but I haven't been able to figure it out.

Can anyone suggest the simplest and free way of doing this.

Note: I have also tried doing it in word but due to the size of the file I have not been able to convert the file to word without my system crashing. Also I've read that you can add a page to your PDF in acrobat and create links from that page but can't seem to do this without the paid version of adobe?

When I need to move something, I select it and hit the keyboard a thousand times. Isn't there a faster way to move some text or an image from one side to the other?

Do they know about drag and drop ??

This program has some big usability issues.

Thanks.

I do not need to rotate my content by 90 degrees. I do need to see my whit background in Landscape mode.

I need to set it to 8-1/2X11 and in landscape, so I have the proper screen area to edit.

It's not working and it's getting my frustrated.

Maybe it's as easy as someone posting an empty PDF configured for landscape and 8.5X11 and perhaps it would open correctly for me...

Thanks

Hello,

I need help with a workflow that causes us to print far too much.

The main problem is the inability to re-organize various PDFs pages from multiple sources (PDFs from a website, PDFs from another PDF form., etc.) Users tell another user add to one main PDF "packet." The only way to re-organize and put them in order is to have a person print out all the pdf sheets, re-organize them, and then send to our mailroom so they can scan into our system.

An example of how this would go is:

Employee A - Hi Employee B, here is the initial PDF packet, please add pages 20, 44, 65 and 70 from this other PDF. Please send to Employee C.

Employee C will possibly respond and request that in addition to the pages above, please add this PDF letter I created that says this and that and put that on top as the first page in the PDF "packet."

Now you have a packet that was created by Employee A, and added to by Employee B and C.

Then you have Employee D, the "Re-organizer." This person receives an email like this

Please create an organized packet based off the information above:

Cover Letter
Page 22 from PDF form A
Page 34 from PDF form C
Page 65 from PDF form C

and so on and so on

He prints all these PDFs from all of their various locations, physically re-organizes them and then they are sent to the mailroom for them to scan back into our system.

Any idea if a program exists or a method that allows any of the employees above re-organize and manipulate …

I am trying to layout a 35 ft wide banner and Illustrator is not letting me make an artboard that big.  Is there a size limit to them.  If so what is the workaround to make something this big?

Thank you!

Hey there,

I am wondering if anyone knows anything or has experience in web design using two different platforms. What I am looking to do is design landing pages and a few others in a separate program such as Dreamweaver. Then have some pages designed in possibly wix or squarespace, that the client can then edit for such things as a blog or similar.

I guess my question boil down to:

Is this possible?

if not is there a situation that would work with having the client be able to log it to a service and only change specific pages?

Would this effect SEO?

any other thoughts or insights?

Hi Guys,

I have created an Application page and placed it under the correct location.  I then assigned 'Editor' permissions to the page which is linked to my Active Directory domain.  I also granted 'User Access' so that it is viewable by the required staff.

The problem i am having, however, is that people in the Editor group cannot edit to portlet.  I have checked previously created pages and matched up the permissions but they are still unable to edit any content. As Websphere Portal administrator i can 'edit' the page successfully just not as an assigned editor.

Can anybody assist me with this request?  I have attached some screenshots for your perusal

Kind Regards,

Hey, guys!

Head out to http://www.cabinets.com/kitchen-cabinets/deerfield-collection/springfield-maple-espresso?wallcabinets=468 and click on any of the "add to cart" buttons. When you do, a pop up appears in the middle of the page while the main page behind is veiled behind an opaque grey color. How are they doing this?

Thanks!

Hi experts,

Anyone here has a great example of profile pages for tech social networks? What kind of information is important to be shown?

Sorry if the question is broad, but I'm wondering nowadays what are the valuable information to be shared?

I am super new to EPub and am just today finishing my book, ready for print, with a PDF. I need a Kindle version ASAP and have been told EPub is smarter than a .MOBI version. And the same one saying this is now using Adobe Dreamweaver to prep the book for EPub and Kindle.

Is he making a website, effectively? He's talking HTML/CSS, etc.

Is this the technology to be using?

What options do I have?

We tried Calibre but that made about every page look terrible. Is that something that can be fixed by using different formatting on the Word doc? I much prefer automation, honestly.

Thanks.

OK Newbie question here.
Familiar as I am with the basics of Excel....I am setting up a workbook with hyperlinks from a front page to a target page, and a link back.
This I have working.
The Hyperlinks are contained in text boxes on a coloured background - one of the default Excel text boxes.
Small screen-grab attached.
What I would like to do is set the FrontPage Hyperlink - so that when it is clicked - the coloured box it is in changes colour to reflect that the page has been selected / accessed. And the link jumps to the selected page
And if this is possible - how do I reset the front page links back to their original colours.....
.................When finished with.

I have a page that has a field for grade (in school) and when I converted that to bootstrap the field doesn't display the grade for this student.  Here is my code for the select:

									<select class="form-control" name="grade_<%=RosterArr(0, i)%>" id="grade_<%=RosterArr(0, i)%>">
										<%For j = 0 to 16%>
											<%If CInt(RosterArr(3, i)) = CInt(j) Then%>
									            <option value="<%=j%>" selected><%=j%></option>
											<%Else%>
									            <option value="<%=j%>"><%=j%></option>
											<%End If%>
										<%Next%>
							        </select>

I can provide the table mark-up as well if needed.  It "worked" before the conversion to bootstrap.

I can't determine why the image at the bottom of this page is not at the right near the top given my row/col page lay-out.  If someone can see what I am missing that would be awesome.
