Page Layout Software

Page layout, also known as desktop publishing, is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page. It generally involves organizational principles of composition to achieve specific communication objectives. With print media, elements usually consist of type (text), images (pictures), and occasionally place-holder graphics for elements that are not printed with ink such as die/laser cutting, foil stamping or blind embossing. Commonly used programs include Adobe PageMaker and InDesign, Corel Ventura, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Publisher and Xara, along with more specialized programs such as TeX, LaTeX and LyX.

Are flowcharts and pseudocode dependant on a specific scripting language?

I'm working on Macs in OS 10.4.10. Software used: Filemaker 6.04 (US) and InDesign CS 3.

I made a Filemaker file that exports a calculated text field.
The text field exports 100s of blocks of text, each block has 4 or 5 lines.
I import the text file into InDesign.
I have several styles already defined in InDesign, call them, Styles 1-9.
I have to select EACH line of text and apply one of my Styles to it.
Worse yet, line 1 has a price - I have to apply a different style to the dollar sign, the dollar portion of the price and the cents portion of the price.
At lease my Filemaker file can isolate these elements.

The Question:
What's the easiest way to export the text from FileMaker so it will be styled when the text is imported into InDesign?

If you tell me what to surround each element of text with, like tags, I think that would work.
Like: ,<Start style 1> [my calculation] <End style 1>

If only...

Our marketing firm has provided us with the files for some ads. They are in QUarkExpress. I have downloaded the WIndows version of this program, but when I open it, the file users fonts that I don't have installed on my PC.

There is a fonts directory included wtih the Quark Express file, but the files don't have an extension, and Windows doesn't recognize them.

Help!

I need to be able to save PDF files to disk to email to clients (invoices) my web server has HTMLDOC installed, but I can't figure out how to make it output the pdf file to disk rather than to the browser. Anyone got any ideas?

I've checked out a million options on the web, but nothing that really does what I want. FDF would be great, but I can't work out how to merge the FDF with the PDF programatically through the web host.

Unless anyone has any great ideas about hacking a PDF file to replace it with values from the db. Please help!

Quark file locking:One of my users  has a persistent but apparently random problem with Quark. It happens very often (almost every time he has a Quark document open) but I cannot find a common reason for it.If he opens a saved file and  make amendments and then save changes, Quark reports that the file is locked (error code -54). When he tries  to save again, Quark has deleted the file and replaced it with one with a file name like QXP11557875 so he has to save the file again under its original name.
This has been happening for the past couple of weeks but it is now happening almost every time he tries to save a file

I will be teaching  Adobe Creative Suite 3 Premium ... using  Dreamweaver + Photshop + Adobe Bridge at the same time; at other times using InDesign + Photoshop + Adobe Bridge at the same time. I'm a teacher at a private school. We are upgrading our computer lab for Grades 9+10 to produce the school website [www.myHVCA.org -- currently done in GoLive 5] and also the school's yearbook [not scrapbooking ... based on design principles in Adobe Classroom in a Bookd ... Photoshop extractions + InDesign layers, etc.

Big question ... we are on the threshold of purchasing 25 new DELL computers ... in the OptiPlex lineup.  What speed processor should I order -- dual core? Ghz? How much RAM should I have? What size LCD monitor should I purchase?

Web + Print Designers ... please tell me the minimum system I and my students will be able to work with, without frustration.  Thank you very much!

I built a product specification catalog using Indesign with lots of full-color high quality graphics but also lots of data. The same kinds of text show up in the same places on each page, but with different values.

For the updates to this catalog I'd like to create templates in Indesign that allow users to change text in parts of the template but not alter anything else. I;d like it to work like a User Form in WORD or Excel, where a user enters values into a form that then populate the relevant fields in the template.

Does Indesign support this, or is there a way to use it that is similar to this? Is there a publication out there that people have found useful for this kind of job?

Cheers

I just started using InDesign and I find the colored outlines (matching the layer color) around every object to be very distracting.  Especially when the object is filigreed. (The first object I brought in was a logo composed mostly of text with no background fill, so that the line follows the edges of each letter making it impossible to properly see the color gradients in the text.

How do I turn that feature off?

Thanks!

John

Running Quark 6.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.10.  Having problems when working on larger files.  One file is 60MB.  When I try to type something in a new text box it goes extremely slow and the text only shows up in chuck, for instance if I typed "this is a test" I might only see the text pop up once I typed "test"

Smaller documents work fine.  I also had no problems with even larger files than that with quark 6.1.

Having a strange issue with InDesign is OS X.  sometimes Adobe InDesign won't save or can't save after working on documents.

After modifying a document I tried to save it under a different file name on the desktop.  Nothing happens.  I tried doing a normal save and nothing happens.  I quit InDesign (say NO to the "do you want to save" prompt) and a restart InDesign and it's working again.  No rhyme or reason.

This has happened a few different times and I can't relate the incidents.  This is a brand new G5 with a fresh install of OS X & Adobe CS2

(Mac OS 10.4.7/Adobe Products/InDesign CS2)  InDesign is not recognizing that linked EPS files in the document are in a folder which has had its name altered. When I try to relink a file using the links pallete, most of the time but not always, InDesign will emplode (crash). This does not make me happy. I have already tried restarting the application/computer and deleting preferences for InDesign.

We are reorganizing our fileserving in the company. As a consequence, the file share available for the Macintosh users (MAc OSX) gets a different name. This is no problem for most applications, but Quark Express is storing absolute path names for references pictures and all references therefore become stale/bad on the new file share.

I tried to create a symbolic link in the /Volumes directory with the old name pointing to the new share. In the terminal everything looks fine, but the Apple finder does not sho the volume and Quark also does not use it.
This surprises me, becuase the "Macintosh HD" Volume is actually also juts a link to "/".

So does anyone know, how I can create a link, which is accepted by the finder? Or does anybody know a different approach to my Quark dilemma?

Right now I am using automation to open a word document update links to an excel file (3 types - inline text strings [linked to cell contents], tables ie R1C1:R22C12 [paste link>picture],  charts ie Chart1 [name of the chart tab in the excel file])

I hate using Word as a desktop publisher, it is so kludgey. What are my other options? The features I would need to accomplish programatically (VBA) in this replacement program would be:
Delete pages
Possibly change page orientation
Update links or pics with relevant data.
Print to distiller

Pretty basic stuff. But can I do this in Publisher or InDesign? I can't seem to find many references in the publisher object library to links, and InDesign advice suggests I would be linking to pictures, which would be replaced as necessary with the updated, appropriate tables and charts.

I have been given a Quark document from a publisher but I merely wish to do two things to it: Copy the content so that it can be used on our website & create a PDF version of the publication.

I have downloaded the 30 trial of QE7 but I'm reluctant to have to fork out quite a lot of money to do something so simple. I have a raft of MS software (inc Publisher 2007) and we're thinging of buying CS3 (web version).

Is there any software out there that will allow me to do what I need at a reasonable cost compared to QE7?

I am using Quark 5 on a pc laptop after several years absence and previous (considerable) experience of Quark 4 on a Mac. I find I cannot open multiple documents in Quark. If I have a document open and  try to open a second document it just replaces the first one. Any suggestions?

I have set up a six column layout in Adobe InDesign that looks like a newspaper page. When I justify to both the left and right to spread them out over the width of the column, some words get very bunched together and it looks like there is no space between them. Is there any way to prevent this in an automated fashion? Thanks.

Hi,

I'm trying to create a notepad book (uncertain about the wording, those books you write notes and such in, often used in schools), and I don't want to manually add all the lines.

I've heard that there's supposed to be a tool that adds lines like this automatically in InDesign - can somebody help me find it? I'm using InDesign CS2.

Thanx :)

Kindly,
Samuel

Hi. I am trying to print with roll paper on a Star Micronics printer. The default is to print the prescription with the print driver in portrait mode so that the end result is for the finished script to be taller than wide. However, I have found that the script formats better if it prints in landscape mode.

The problem is that the only way it will print in landscape mode is if you change it from portrait to landscape AFTER you click on print preview or print... and change it then. But that, of course, would be a pain to have to do that each time. Obviously, one can go into the properties or printer preferences and set the default to landscape and save it. I have done that, and it remains set as landscape after I close it and open it back up. The problem is when I then print a prescription it prints is portrait mode even though it remains in landscape mode.

As a aside, when I use a PCL6 driver for Word or PDF files, they won't print as landscapes either way. Only the "test page" from within the printer driver window will print in landscape mode.

I am preparing a 8.5" x 11" catalog with a total of  pages.  Basically, it is 2 double-sided 11" x 17" pages (stapled and folded).

I do not have much time to prepare the doc, and I need to know how to setup the pages so the printer can print full bleed.  Basically, I am wonding if I need to setup the page size as 8.5" x 11" or 11" x 17".  If I setup with the smaller page size, will InDesign magically convert the output to the 11" x 17" format for the printer, or can the printer figure that out on their own.

Visually, it makes sense to use the smaller format (except for creating the cover/back combination.  Any tips would be appreciated.
