Page Layout Software

Page layout, also known as desktop publishing, is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page. It generally involves organizational principles of composition to achieve specific communication objectives. With print media, elements usually consist of type (text), images (pictures), and occasionally place-holder graphics for elements that are not printed with ink such as die/laser cutting, foil stamping or blind embossing. Commonly used programs include Adobe PageMaker and InDesign, Corel Ventura, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Publisher and Xara, along with more specialized programs such as TeX, LaTeX and LyX.

I have a lot of files that start with ._ I think they may be temp files but want to make sure before deleting them.  I am running InDesign 5.5
When using Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard I have issues when trying to scale off PDF’s that I receive from Architects. When using the distance, area, or perimeter tool it will not scale correctly even after I change the scale in the tool box. I’ve tried to change the scale to different setting and the same measurements will be produced regardless of what scale I set it to.

Example: ¼” inch per 1’ foot will scale will produce the same distance as ½” inch per 1’ foot.

I have an Indesign document with an image on the page that I have from a linked image file.  Only a part of the linked image is displayed based on a clipping path made in Photoshop.  When I complete the work and export the page to PDF, the whole image is really there, just not visible.  How can I crop the invisible parts of the image without destroying the original linked file?  If it is possible, should I process the file before / on export, or can I do a clean up in Acrobat after.  I have tried optimising but that doesnt remove the invisible parts of the images and I can see that about 90-95% of the file space is taken up with image data. Using CS3. Any suggestions much appreciated.

ps. There doesnt appear to be a an Indesign category so tagging with associated applications.
I have a 20 page PDF document.  Looking to produce something that allows user to turn pages while viewing on the web similar to this URL:

Prestashop.  I would like to change the categories font to be larger so that it stands out.  Thank you in advance.
I am using CorelDraw X6. I am trying to print out sheets of Avery business cards. I am using Avery product numbers 8879, 8859 and 5371. They are all similar products. I am able to design the business card fine, but I am unable to tell Corel that I want one sheet of ten business cards. All I ever see is the single item I designed both on print preview and also when printing. I would appreciate it if someone could give me specific step by step instructions to let me print out an entire sheet of ten business cards. ( I have done this with success years ago, but the solution escapes me now.)
What software, preferably open source, will convert a regular pdf to a searchable pdf?

I was hoping folks could help me to determine the best solution for the following.

I have a software system that generates html based content that is displayed on a UI as well as used to generate PDF's.  I am looking for a tool that I can use to help build and maintain mockups/wireframes that will fit on a standard letter sheet of paper in landscape mode.

Layout will generally be based off of a 2x2 grid, however, we support many different combinations such as 1x1, 1x2, 3x3.

Content can include different charts, tables, etc.

The problem my team has been having is that when there is a business request to add several columns of data to a table on a page, they are not aware of what will fit.   Some of the screens can be quite busy with content and it is not clear what impact various changes would have on the page until a template is created/updated later in the development cycle.
I am looking for a tool to allow for us to mockup content that is restricted to a fixed page size (letter).  For example, it needs to know that on a given section of a page, that if you to add a new 10 char column it would not fit on the page.

The solution needs to be software that can be installed on a windows box.

I have software that generates html5 code by way of a script.

I don't know how to set up my template to keep text from running past
the end of the container.

Please show me what I have to add to my templater:

<div align="center">
                  <table width="450">
                  <td style="text-align:left; vertical-align: top; font-size: 14;"><b>Full Screen Dynamo best yetxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<br>
The line breaks here were created by entering return key
The html which is producing the improper results is attached

Thanks in advance,
I am trying to edit a PDF form. I am able to place cursor on the form filed but not able to type or edit information. I am using MAC to edit the file. My friend created this file by filling part of the information and wanted me to complete rest.
I wanted to get some UI design advice. I am not sure this is the proper forum to ask this question so here goes.

My situation is I have a table that has 51 bit values to hold the values of statutes.   Please see StatutesTable.txt in the attached .zip file.

In production, this table would have over 10,000 records for the different LocationID's.

I have explored the option of possibly having a joining or linking table to house these bit values, but that would produce a table with over 500,000 ( 10000 x 51 checkbox/bit values) records that would have to be queried for each LocationID, as opposed to querying 10,000 records.

Morevoer, the UI for this in its pure database for would have a page with the dozens of text boxes.

Is there a better , cleaner way to do this?

Any recommendation or links to how others have handled this situation.

Please feel free to post any additional questions if further clarification is needed.
Fiddling around with menu setup for a page and a css newbie....

Definition for header (on a gray background) work good, turning hover to a different forecolor and bolder.

Except for a couple of links in the main content placeholder, which has a white background, the light blue (00ffff) and size are UGLY!

Not sure how to make different link styles.  Know it has to be easy!

Here is my current css settings for links....

a:link { color: black; text-decoration: none; }
a:visited { color: black; text-decoration: none; }
a:hover { color: #00ffff; font-weight: bolder; text-decoration: none; }
a:active { color: black; text-decoration: none; }

My usage in the header is....
<div id="nav-wrapperL" style="float:left">
        <asp:HyperLink runat="server" ID="HyperLink1" CssClass="nav-links" NavigateUrl="default.aspx">Support Home</asp:HyperLink>

Open in new window

In the content area....

            <div class="center">
                <asp:Label ID="Label6" runat="server"
                    Text="&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If assistance is needed, please contact "
                    Font-Names="Microsoft Sans Serif"
                    Height="20px" Width="290px" />

                <asp:HyperLink ID="HyperLink1" runat="server"
                    Font-Names="Microsoft Sans Serif"

Open in new window

You can see that I am horrible at spacing....    Oh, what to do, what to do!

I have adobe acrobat professional XI.  When I try to print a browser page I get an error after I click on save button.  I get access denied.  I have reinstalled, repaired, removed printer and reinstalled printer.  I have same problem with all browsers.  This used to work.  I don't know when it stopped.

i have couple users that works with IE9 & IE10 they try to open different type of files such as Excel & Orcad but those types of files cannot be opened in IE window, they just see blank screen.

how can i force those files to opened in the default application instead of IE window ?
I managed to solved it with PDF files but not in other programs ( MS Office & Cadence Orcad).

Workstation details :
OS : Windows 7 Pro x64
IE: 9& 10

thanks in advance.
Hi Expert,

How a can create a PDf file from vb.net?

I need create invoice pdf file with company logo, how to do it?

Thanks in advance.
We have an issue in our javascript application where the ui occasionally does not load properly in IE8. When this happens, a refresh solves the issue, but we are trying to track down the root cause.

Problem is - the issue happens so infrequently that it is not possible to reproduce on-demand. We try to keep developer tools up and running on the off chance that we can catch it, but so far no luck.

Any suggestions on strategies or practices to deal with such an issue?
There use to be and editor that you could have many lines of text and you were able to go any place in the center or any where else and high lite down thru the lines below and either delete that high lite area or move it to some were else with in the lines of text.

I hope I explained this were you can under stand what I mean.

Is there still an editor like this?
I am looking at automating some functions in InDesign using a WPF app in C# using the COM library. I have managed to open a document, get text frames and update text within the document.

I would like to swap out images within graphic frames but I am having trouble doing so, I can't even get the graphic object.

I am using the below code to try and get graphic objects from the document:

Type type = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("InDesign.Application");
Application app = (Application)Activator.CreateInstance(type, true);

 //Set units to mm
app.ViewPreferences.HorizontalMeasurementUnits = idMeasurementUnits.idMillimeters;
app.ViewPreferences.VerticalMeasurementUnits = idMeasurementUnits.idMillimeters;

//Open Document
app.Open(@"C:\document.indd", true, idOpenOptions.idOpenOriginal);
Document doc = app.ActiveDocument;

Page pg = doc.Pages[1];
Graphics gs = (Graphics)pg.AllGraphics;

Open in new window

but I keep getting this error:

An unhandled exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in InDesignTest.exe

Additional information: Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to interface type 'InDesign.Graphics'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{C85A4AB3-9492-4C40-8A7B-F8305706C8B8}' failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE)).

Has anyone used InDesign successfully with C#, any help would be appreciated.
Divs are for content, tables are data!  I get that.

BUT, can DIVs become so convulaed with hundreds of them, that markup seems harder.

I'd like a 3 column approach for a form.  975px wide, soooo 325 each?  Makes things easier to line up, I hope.  You know labels/text boxes.  My problem on a line without DIVs is spacing.  How do I build in a blank area to separate columns?

I have:
First Name: (box) Last Name:  (box)
City: (box) State: (box)  Zip Code: (box)

Like to see:

First Name:    (box)       Last Name:  (box)
City:                (box)       State:           (box)             Zip Code:   (box)

Wanna nice and purdy layout, but I only know how with Tables

I have a form that I have created in InDesign and export to a 24pg pdf. I know how to make form fields in Adobe Acrobat X Pro, but we want to also allow users to upload images next to the yes/no questions.

Wind damage to building? [ ] yes  [ ] no  Photos: (big space for photos)

Fire damage to building? [ ] yes  [ ] no  Photos: (big space for photos)

Is there a way to allow the end user to do this in Acrobat without a database?

Thank you!
Okay, stupid question time.

My company wants me to convert a "data entry" system for their clients.  How mundane!  EXCEL spreadsheets as an input device?

I want to create a data entry page (14 fields) that can be multiple entries per page....
The page will constitute what is in the Excel columns.  (Name, ID, other normal stuff).

Key is, I don't want to have the user, entering and submitting each new record.

In thought, I equate this with the ability in Linked-In to enter multiple skills, in a sense.  Only more fields?

Make sense?  Other team-mates don't want to upset the client base and let them use
the Excel spreadsheet.  Allow them to upload it, and read it to fill the database.  What a waste in my mind?

Any suggestions?

I see that you can create a menu and submenu with the spry feature. Now is it possible to replace those buttons with the buttons graphic? Below is what I have in mind. Thanks

Just downloaded Scribus for DTP and their help says that most consumer printers don't really support postscript (i.e. Local printing requires a high-end PostScript printer -- which most consumer devices are NOT).

How can I determine 1) whether my HP OfficeJet is a postcript printer or to what extent it supports postscript -- and 2) is this a printer hardware question or printer driver question?

Running Windows 7 64bit

I have the following html (see below) and the result is not what I am looking for. The #nav and #search are below the #logo and not next to #logo.

Please see pic for what I am looking for.
final result

 <div id="header">
        <div id="logo"></div>
        <div id="search">search</div>
        <div id="nav">
                <il><a href="">home</a></il>
                <il><a href="">home</a></il>
                <il><a href="">home</a></il>
                <il><a href="">home</a></il>
                <il><a href="">home</a></il>

Open in new window

and css code:
#logo {
	width: 280px;
	height: 100px;
#search {
#nav {
	width: 680px;
