Page Layout Software

Page layout, also known as desktop publishing, is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page. It generally involves organizational principles of composition to achieve specific communication objectives. With print media, elements usually consist of type (text), images (pictures), and occasionally place-holder graphics for elements that are not printed with ink such as die/laser cutting, foil stamping or blind embossing. Commonly used programs include Adobe PageMaker and InDesign, Corel Ventura, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Publisher and Xara, along with more specialized programs such as TeX, LaTeX and LyX.

I am designing a 8.5x11 Trifold Brochure and see that each panel should NOT be the same size (http://graphicdesign.stocklayouts.com/2011/10/26/what-are-the-dimensions-of-a-tri-fold-brochure/)

But looking at the MS "Layout Guides", it seems I can only make them the same size (e.g. Grid Guides prompts me for Number of Columns and space between columns).

How do I correctly layout a Trifold Brochure so that the three panels can be sized differently per the link above?

Thanks-
Sam

I am working on some training materials for my students and am setting up the worksheet in Indesign. I have typographer quotes turned on in the preferences and use it for where I write directions.  For the code snippets however I want straight quotes.

I know I can go and turn off the typographer quotes and then type the code, but if I have typographer quotes turned on and copy paste code they all become curly. Interesting enough, if I start with curly quotes and then turn off typography quotes and then paste they stay curly.

Is there a way I can set up a style that will always use straight quotes so that if students copy past the code they don't end up getting errors from the curly quotes?

Thanks

Using Adobe Acrobat Pro 11 and have drive mappings to network shares.  When try to add to trusted sites in enhanced security, it converts the drive mapping to a URL.  How can I make it keep the drive letter?

I have a crystal report for store sales with a formula in the page header to print either a store name or 'Grand Total'. If there are 2 (or more) grand total pages, I cannot get the right heading to print on both  grand total page. The current formula looks like this:

if PageNumber = TotalPageCount or OnLastRecord  then
    {?Grand Total}
else
    "Store Name"

which works unless the last store prints 2 pages

Any help is greatly appreciated (couldn't find crystal in the topics)

Hi,
We have 1,000's of InDesign Files in 100's of directories that we need to search. We have an EPS file of a CEO's Signature that is used (Linked and Embedded) in some of those InDesign files. Is there a way to search (without opening) those files for all of them that are using that EPS?
If not I can only thing that we will just have to open each one and see if the EPS is used in it and replace as needed. It would be nice to be able to either start with a list of files that are known or maybe even do a programmatic replacement of the EPS in mass.

Just trying to understand HP-GL/2 in somewhat more detail than I've done in the past, and there's something I'm failing to understand with use of the SR command to stretch character sizes.

It works if I use 600 user-units-per-inch and the default HP-GL/2 axes (where Y values increase UP the page).

SC0,1.6933,0,1.6933,2;          Scale sets user units = 600 per-inch

Open in new window

with labels preceded by various SR commands, such as:

SR5,4;            Set Relative Character Width  & Height as 5% / 4% of P1/P2 rectangle

SR5,2;            Set Relative Character Width  & Height as 5% / 2% of P1/P2 rectangle

SR10,2;           Set Relative Character Width  & Height as 10% / 2% of P1/P2 rectangle

Open in new window

But if I change the axes to match the PCL coordinate system (where Y values increase DOWN the page):

SC0,1.6933,0,-1.6933,2          Scale sets user units = 600 per-inch, with Y-axis reversed

IR0,100,0,100     Input Relative P1 and P2

Open in new window

as shown in the PCL5 & HP-GL/2 manual (alhough I don't yet understand just what the IR command is doing), then the same SR commands don't print anything (I suspect because the characters are too small to print).

... and even if I use the maximum value (32767) for width or height, the stretching is nowhere near as much as that printed using the original small SR values with the HP-GL/2 Y-axis setup.

I have a report produced from Tables in Access that I want to take out of Access to do more formatting for publication.  I know that I can export to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF.  However, these applications don't have the high-end formatting capabilities that I need (although Word comes closest with its ability to create indexes).

Does someone know of a publishing tool that works really well with Access reports?  Years ago I worked with Adobe FrameMaker with some success.  Thanks!

Hi,

i am looking for a utility (application, code) to accurately convert financial data tables in pdf to excel or html.

the problem i face in normally available converters is that they do not properly align headers with financial data in the column.

you can take a look at pdf in below section
http://www.bp.com/en/global/corporate/investors/results-and-reporting/annual-f-oi.html

i require only the data in financial tables.

I have created a form in Word 2010 with rich text boxes and check boxes. I restrict editing and tick form filling but when I send it out and users are not using word 2010 the check boxes do not work and the text boxes can overrun and move my form template items.
What can I do to prevent this happening?

Hello! I have an InDesign document with several hundred pages that seems to have shifted when I did a data merge.

Is there any way to move the images and text boxes that are now not in their proper spot without having to go in and do it page by page?

The document is in InDesign CC

Although some of the time remaining an illustrator file to .PDF will allow me to open it, other times the trick doesn't work.

Is there a free program available that will let me open Adobe illustrator files?  I only need to view the files and spending the exorbitant amount of money for illustrator seems unnecessary.

I have tried Irfanview without luck.

Would you know of a good program to do this?

Thank you,

John

Hello!

I am working on a draft guide, and all of the info from my client has been compiled in a excel document.

I have exported the file as a csv and have done a data merge in Indesign CS6; however, I am getting odd blanks and breaks within my file when I created the merged document.

Please see the attached InDesign file for reference.

Since I'm dealing with a document involving multiple pages, I'd love to figure out the issue instead of having to correct everything by hand.

I was saving a photo to my desktop and accidentally changed the background of the desktop to be the photo itself.
The desired background is the color you see in the photo.
However the fonts for the names of the files and folders have changed.
The names of the folders is white and somewhat blurry. How to change their appearance?

We have Windows 8 and use Google Chrome as our web browser (we have Internet Explorer, FireFox and Opera, but we 99.99% prefer Chrome).

Sometimes we save web pages to disk, we:

- right-click on the web
- Save As
- in "Save as types" select "Webpage, Complete"
- save the page to a folder

If we open a recent saved webpage, it open automatically in Internet Explorer and all seems Ok.  We also open the same recent webpage in Chrome and it also seems ok: all in its viewable screen formats.

The problem is opening up older saved webpages.  It displays wrong.  We notice that if we save a webpage today and open it up in 1 or 2 months, for some reason it doisplay bad.

Hello all,

I am looking for a tool that can automate (via script) the process of separating a large poster-style PDF document into predefined sections and creating a new page-by-page PDF.

The source document is in InDesign... so if this can be done within InDesign, that is acceptable. Otherwise, a free tool is ideal, pay tool is also acceptable.

Thank you,
Doug

Could somebody recommend a good library (except XMLmind FO converter) which could be used to convert XSL-FO files to DOCX ?

It has to be for Windows (native or .net), but not Java.

I have created a 2-pg fillable form in LiveCycle ES4 with tabbing. All of the tabbing is set in the correct order and works in 95% of the fields. But in 2 cases the tabbing doesn't work as I set it and how it shows in the tab order. Even with the blue arrows visual aids tuned on the tabbing doesn't follow the arrows. The 2 places are: from the last field on page 1 to field #1 on pg 2 - it skips to the first checkbox (field 10) on pg 2.
The 2nd place is from the 3rd email address on pg 2 (field 9) is jumps back to field 1 on page 1. nothing I have tried has worked.

Hi,

I currently have a Excelsheet that contains groups of questions.
A customer can fill in a value for each question. The total of all questions within a group are summarized automatically in a grouptotal.
see attachment for layout and clarification.

Now I need to create this form in a PDF, so customers can fill in the form, save it and mail it back to me.

What would be a good approach to do this?
Which softwareproducts do I need for this?

I am looking for a free javascript vertical overmouse dropdown menu script. Not a menu maker, just the good all ready made script, I want I want to place it in a cgi web page and it uses templates html where I can place it in.
I have look on the internet, but most of the ones I find are menu makes, don't want to get into that.

I found one put I can not figure out how to change the drop down categories and subcategories menus. I have tried the menu.css but that didn't do anything, it must be in the js file, but I know so little about javascript

Hello all,

I've been tasked with creating a poster style install guide and I am looking for examples and/or information such as, best practices, etc. But I am especially looking for examples of technical computer/hardware install guides that employ this poster style.

I'll most likely create this poster guide in InDesign. I just need some inspiration and although I thought I had good Google kung fu, I am coming up nearly empty for anything.

On a related note, is anyone familiar with a website that explains many different documentation styles, formatting, and best practices. I found a website like this a year ago but I have since lost it.

Thanks so much

I have a page I am working on and want to use the float feature to wrap the text around a picture in a box.  I want the picture in the top left corner and the text to fill the rest.  It works perfectly in IE10, but when opened with Chrome or Firefox they move the picture to the bottom of the box and the text wraps over the top and right.  How can I get this to display correctly in those browsers?

Here is the code for the two elements in question.

#tbox1  {
                        position:relative;
                        width:630px;
                        margin-left:320px;
                        margin-top:10px;
                        font-size:15px;
                        text-indent:8px;
}

#img1  {
                        float:left;
                        width:400px;
                        height:230px;
}

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

<div id="tbox1">
      <div id="img1"><img alt="" src="images/building.jpg" width="387" height="225" />
      </div>
      <p>paragraph of text of text.</p>
      <br /><br /><p id="homep">Another paragraph of text.</p>
</div>

I have tried adding position:(tried all) and top:0; but nothing I do gets me my desired result.
