Peripherals

A peripheral device is defined as a computer device, such as a keyboard or printer, that is not part of the essential computer (i.e., the memory and microprocessor). These auxiliary devices are intended to be connected to the computer and used in conjunction with it. Examples of external peripherals include mouse, keyboard, printer, monitor, external Zip drive or scanner, while internal peripherals include CD-ROM drive, CD-R drive or internal modem. Today's new devices, such as tablets, smartphones and wearable computing devices are considered peripherals as they can be connected and used on a computer system. The difference, however, is that these devices can run independently of the computer system.

We have a couple of old Lexmark 2500+ series dot-matrix printers still in service that are used to produced shipping labels, one or two or ten at a time. These printers have a horizontal metal shaft and the printhead slides back and forth on that shaft, driven by a motor and cogged belt. One of these printers has started to malfunction and as best I can tell it's because the printhead/shaft mechanism is in need of some lubrication. If you slide the printhead manually, you can feel resistance. Cleaning the shaft with rubbing alcohol seems to provide a temporary fix. Once upon a time, I was told that printers of this type should never be oiled as it would ruin the bearings in the printhead mechanism. However, according to the service manual on this Lexmark this one should be lubricated when certain parts are replaced, including the "oil felt (carrier block)". It further goes on to say that only mineral oil based lubricants should be used and gives a Lexmark part number 1280443 and these approved equivalents: Mobil DTE27, Shell Tellus 100, Fuchs Renolin MR30. My questions are, should I be lubricating this printer even though I'm not replacing any parts? Secondly, I'm having difficulty finding the specified lubricants in any size other than 5 gallon containers, costing over $100 each. These all appear to be "anti-wear hydraulic oils". Am I obsessing too much trying to find the exact spec oil or can I get by with something off the shelf, as long as it's mineral oil?

Providing users with HP Chromebook 14 G5's for agile working. Need USB-C docks with dual HDMI and charging. Loads out there but not so specific on whether they support Chrome OS or not. Can anyone point me to a device they have successfully used with Chrome OS and ideally the HP Chromebooks.

Using a Datalogic Quickscan scanner, we have the default set to carriage return after each scan.  We want to leave it that way.  However, we want to create a barcode so when scanned, it does a carriage return.  The reason is a common application asks for a UPC input first.  Upon scanning it, the next field asks for quantity.  Most of the time, the user selects the default by pressing enter on the keyboard.  We just want to give them the option to scan a "return" barcode without having to touch the keyboard to press enter. Support says we have to turn off the default auto return after scan suffix for this to work.  This would mean the user would have to scan an "enter" barcode after every scan; including UPC.  What I thought would be a simple thing has turned into several dead ends.  Any help is appreciated.

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro running Windows 10 Pro via BootCamp.  The laptop has a 720p camera called "FaceTime HD Camera" which works fine with the Windows 10 Camera app.  It works fine with most webcam enabled sites in Chrome, FireFox and Edge, it works fine with ManyCam.  But it only works when set to 720p.

If I change the resolution to 640x480, 640x320 or lower, the image just goes black, or in Windows 10 Camera App's case - it also shows a 0x8... error code.

I discovered this because I have to use Adobe Connect for a Uni assignment and I cannot get the camera working in that at all.  Apparently that application supports up to 640x480@20FPS and whilst it detects the FaceTime HD Camera, there is no image when you start the webcam.

Using ManyCam, if you change the video format from 720p to 480p or lower, the camera stops working, change it back and it works fine.

Use a different webcam (eg. Logitech C920 Pro) in 480p or lower with any of the applications or websites and the image is fine.

So whilst using an external camera is a workaround, it would be great to actually have a fix for the issue.

Any ideas?

I currently use Apple Magic Trackpad with a Lenovo 8" tablet (Android 5.1) for a customized field Astronomy setup. I'm looking for a very specific size and resolution (7.75" to 8",  1024x768 ) to replace the current tablet, but have found that Apple Magic Trackpad compatibility is spotty at best. Compatibility varies not just within versions of Android but also within point versions and also manufacturers. I'm trying to find a method to predict Bluetooth Apple Magic Trackpad compatibility within a certain device without having to actually have the device in my possession to test it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am currently setting up a training room where I want everything to be automated. I have door style windows on a slanted roof that currently needs to be opened manually. The problem is that the windows are very high, and it is not practical to try and open them manually.

They are side hung escape windows with wooden frames and dimensions 660x1180mm.

I want to convert the windows so they can open automatically, preferably using a remote or voice commands using my SmartThings hub or Amazon Alexa. Would this be possible?

Would you be able to guide me to the type of window opener/actuator that would best suit my window and what else I would need to get to be able to use my SmartThings hub or IFTTT event triggering.

Any solutions would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Robbie

Hello,

We are running into issues with having web cameras hooked up to Wyse Terminals.

Has anyone ever successfully got a web camera setup with a Wyse terminal? When the webcam is plugged into the Wyse terminal states usb device not supported behind a high speed hub. I have tried all of the USB ports on the device but nothing seems to work.

We were able to get the device to show up once but video was choppy.

Any Input/Help would be greatly appreciated.

I am struggling to set up the TWAIN driver for CanoScan 4200F.  My system runs on Win 7 Pro 64.

I have downloaded the Driver file from Canon several times and have run the setup.  It appears the setup runs too fast.  The file is extracted, and installation location is provided, evidently ./ (period and forward slash).  The issue may be that the form where the download directory can be changed or other adjustments to the download made, is hidden during the super quick download.  Once the download and installation is finished, the form closes.

When attempting to scan a project, an error message stating: "Unable to select TWAIN  resource."

NOTE:  I have entered what I think is the correct path in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp;C:\Windows\twain_32\CNQ4200 .

This action is recommended on many help sites.  BUT, in my case, this does not resolve the problem.

I'd be grateful for your help in an understandable manner.

Sticky Keys are not turned on and this has only recently been happening but when I use “SHIFT” + any of the number keys for punctuation it only gives me a number as if “SHIFT” was not pressed. Eg. “SHIFT” + “2” should give me “@” but it gives me 2. Yet “SHIFT” + “=” gives me “+” meaning that the shift does work but just not with numbers. Does anyone know what has happened and how I can fix this?

Thanks.

hello gamers . I have a twin usb game pad . My main pad is spoilt so I wanted to cut the usb to join it directly to the second one. Buh my problem now is the usb cord has 4 wires(white, green, red, black) while the pad also has 4 (white, green, red, yellow). Is there any way I can join these wires together to make it work? Thanks.
