Project Management

Project management is the discipline of carefully projecting or planning, organizing, motivating and controlling resources to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. A project is a temporary endeavor designed to produce a unique product, service or result with a defined beginning and end (usually time-constrained, and often constrained by funding or deliverables) undertaken to meet unique goals and objectives, typically to bring about beneficial change or added value.

we have a project manager who just joined our IT team.  They don't have a lot if experience but are well versed in IT and organization.    any recommendations for good software?  it needs to be able to remind people of deadlines.    It needs to have results published or easily accessible by managers.   she is not a pop buy pretty good at what she does.   I don't want the software to be to complex

First of all, thanks to whoever will help me in advance.

Second, my question is that I got a new job offer from a company as a Team Leader in Linux Administration Department, I'm OK with that but the issue is that I've been asked to re-create the department from scratch that consists of a new vision, system for support, ticketing, project management, employees rating, and services that we will provide.

I need to hear your ideas on how to start building this department, what do I need? and what to read to enrich my knowledge regarding this?

The company gave me an unlimited budget to work with.

Department: Linux System Management, Administration, Monitoring, Backup, Virtual Machines and Storage.

Hope that you can enlighten me with some ideas/softwares that can help.

Best regards,
Wondering what other folks using to manage multiple projects.  Software or app, etc.
I want to find a mechanism to manage multiple projects on the high level.  Then dig into the individual project tasks and so on.
Anyone can share?
We adopted a very basic Scrum-like project management system to help us through a multi-month software platform transition we are doing. We have a SharePoint list to hold the Project Backlog (Epics) and a physical whiteboard (To Do, Doing, Done) to display the stories for each Sprint.

A question/disagreement came up about the location of a verification step, which we want to add. The project manager wanted it added in the Project Backlog and I took the position that it should be included in each Sprint as the Backlog is just for reference, not for process.

Simple question: where should the Verify step go: Backlog or Sprint?
I'd like to be able to auto-sort these tasks based on:

Grouped by project with the task of the following criteria indicating which group of projects is listed first.

Then by oldest dates of: Actual Start, Actual Finish, Planned Start, Planned Finish

Tasks within the project should be sorted in the same order.

When I add or change any of the dates, I want the spreadsheet to re-sort (I suppose it's similar to requery).

I am comfortable with this being VBA or whichever method the expert chooses to sort them.
I am using portecle to generate a java store cert for JIRA. I created the keystore, create the key pair, generated the CSR, processed the CSR using third party CA. I then imported the root cert into Portecle. When I import the CA response I get "could not establish trust for the CA reply. The import cannot proceed.
Why is this happening as everything appears correct.
hi guys,

I'm currently managing an IT Operations team. I've been asked by our new head to come up with a way for me/us to measure in some shape or form their progress on a weekly basis.

We use Zendesk for our ticketing system which is very comprehensive. He wants us to find a way of knowing, how many particular jobs were started, closed, including things such as 'what got in the way?'. Along with that, he wants to know a way of measuring project progress in a similar way.

Do you guys have any measuring methods that you use at your work places? Or advised others on how to better do something similar?

I am working with a stakeholder on a project.  The project has gotten off track due to the stakeholder being unresponsive and not delivering requested items within the set drop-dead dates.  This has gotten the project behind schedule. Stakeholders are unmotivated and drag pieces and parts of the project way past deadlines.  I  am stumped as how to get them more engaged.  Ideas are brought forward by the project team and it takes customer weeks to make decisions on whether to move forward.

There is no clarity on what exactly what they want.  What are some things I can do to motivate the customer and get them more engaged in the project? How can I get the customer to see the urgency of delivering needed items by the delivery deadlines?  How can I request and get the customer to define what they really need without upsetting the customer?  They are very sensitive.  Some of the issues observed.

Stakeholder does not have a business liaison on their side who understands how to move through a project.  Suggested they borrow a project manager from their sister agency to help.  No response.

Business and the Technical teams have no communication between them so decisions can be made on pertinent issues.
Believe because they do not understand how to project manage a business solution implemented, they wanted to hand over the project to the team and not be involved at all, but do not want to give team authority to make decisions.

Could anyone give me info on Jira insights asset management. I am interested to find out where Jira server should be located. I have multiple disconnected sites so I am unclear how the client connects back to the server and if I need to deploy beacon type servers to each site thanks
About scrum, just want to learn from you guys it is good for project manager role? The cost is over 1000 for two days class plus exam fee.

Hello EE,

I manage an IT team and would like to find a software/freeware that we can post a task/project board for the team to see what they have in their project priority list to work.  We have a Helpdesk software for incidents, but this would be to visual projects, due dates and what is in each others buckets and what order.  I am sure others have such a software.  I am looking for something simple and what would you recommend having used and love.

I have a JIRA instance that experienced problems recently and required a reinstall. Everything seems to be ok but jpeg images that were previously uploaded to projects are no longer showing. This is because images were previously on a different drive to JIRA installation. Now that I am on version 7 of JIRA I cannot change this location or it is not recommended. Is there any impact to simply copying the images to the new JIRA location in c:\porgram files? thanks
I have a very big production server in a VM with lots of web pages and SQL database code.

I want to set up VisualSVN so developers can work on the web and database code.

I have 2 options:
1) copy the production VM with all code, name this DEV-VM, and set up SVN on DEV VM
2) setup SVN on production VM so I don't have duplicate VMs that take up A LOT of space

Which option would you choose and why?

Want to use Outlook as a Project Management tool.

Here’s my idea: create a category - Medieval Woodworking Tools Show.  MWTS

As the project proceeds I’ve got emails that come in. Categorize them MTWS.  Appointments I set, categorize those.  Contact I make - the same.  Tasks, too.

Takes 3 or 4 months to set up this show.  So by now I’ve got elements of the project across every category of Outlook - mails, appointments, contacts, tasks.

I can use Advanced Search to do an Across All Categories search based on Categorization. (Thanks Bil Prew!)  But, I’d need to drill down through the search dialogue each time I wanted to do that.

Is there anyway using User Defined elements - or any other method - that I could create a freestanding search that would autopopulate based on the MWTS category?

I was thinking of something like Customize Current View, but that I could build based on a Category?  So I could just one-click that view and right away get a cross-category list of everything that currently has the MWTS categorization tag inside Outlook.

This way I wouldn’t have to run the Advanced search and set all the criteria each time (risking some left out criteria) to find everything.  I’d have an on-going collection of everything related to the project.  Something I could just quick click to get to.

This would be especially great when one …
We want to implement seat management for my office IT Infrastructure .
Are there any feasibility study  framework to implement Seat Management system in IT Infrastructure ?
Anyone have a basic software scope (requirements) template I could have?

It would be for simple projects.

Was googling for this and wasn't finding anything really solid
quickly. Anyone have one they use that they would not mind sharing?
The projects are like 10 to 50 hours.

Thank you so much
hi guys

Are any of you working on implementing GDPR that plans to come into effect next March?

If so, do you have a list of things that need to be implemented technically on infrastructure, storage and network security?
I am looking for something that would have a list of 'to-do's' like:

"Must implement password complexity of one letter, number and eight characters that change every 30 days"
"Transfer of data from local source to destination must be recorded and its location known"

I just made the above up, but basically are there any lists that one could follow as guidance for the entire infrastructure?

Our firm has been using PhoneSlips for almost twenty (20) years. Unfortunately, we have outgrown the system and we are having constant data corruption issues and our IT guy is spending more than 8 hours a month trying to constantly repair data errors.

Our needs are straight-forward and concise:

Client Profile Management. Names, addresses, contact info, etc. Unless the database is very well designed, having the ability to customize fields would be a must.

Inter-Office Messaging. We prefer an environment where this feature is not a separate program.

Appointment Scheduler. We want scheduling built into the same program. I am amazed at the number of CRM programs that have inadequate or no scheduler.

Task/Project Scheduling would be a plus.

Cloud-based of course. Our people need to access this info from their laptops, IOS and Android-based phones.

Online training videos - No Seminars. Software so complicated that people have to attend fly to a seminar somewhere is not only poorly-designed/presented, but typically not well received. One thing I have learned as a managing partner, make a job difficult for employees and they will make life difficult for you.

Good phone support. Offices becoming so reliant on these programs that good and quick software support is a must.

Please be frank. If you know someone using a system that has allowed their office to become more efficient, I want to hear about it. If they are running a system they wished they had never …
What do you think are some best tools that can be useful for data analyst?
I am working on a large project and I need to pass some tasks to an external freelance, the problem I am facing is that the tasks they have to do doesn't touch all the modules, it is a document manager associated with clients, and I don't want to gave the complete project because it size and segurity .
The project is build in Java using Maven, and the idea to pass the project is as follows:

1- Delete the packages of the modules they don't need and adapt the project to make it work without those modules
2- Make a SVN branch and giving only access to that branch
3- When the changes are completed I do a SVN merge file per file to move changes to the project

The problem is that requires me to adapt the project to pass it, wasting time and then when I merge the changes I have to pass it manually one by one with a lot of risk of miss something.

What would be the best way to work with a freelancer without having to spend time adapting the entire project and without having problems later to integrate the changes?

We are going to migrate from Exchange to office 365 and also going to change our email address and our address will change from Eg: Jay Smith current email is
I am working on a project plan and listing what all the services that will impact and how to make this changes, if the user SMTP address is changed and the considerations, so that the changeover goes smoothly. How do I add developers to the bug assignments list in tfs 2015?

My tester is adding bugs to a project and is complaining that there are no developers in the drop-down list of developers to assign the bug to... I'm not familiar with using TFS as a testing platform; is there a TFS role the developer need to be in?
I guess the base question is: What feeds the bug assignments drop-down list?

I'm looking for a better task management solution. I could use some suggestions based on my requirements.

requirements in order of importance, top 6 are a must
  1. -has web/PC app and mobile (Android) app, data being synchronized
  2. -tasks can have due dates
  3. -can associate with "note to self" directive on Android, so I can say "OK Google, note to self, buy birthday cards" and it will make a new task for me hands-free
  4. -can search text contents on mobile and on PC
  5. -has some way of categorizing tasks (lists, categories, folders)
  6. -paste images from clipboard into a task
  7. -attach files to a task
  8. -keyboard shortcuts on PC to create and edit tasks
  9. -can create sub-tasks or related (e.g. "is-blocked-by") tasks
  10. -tasks have priorities (normal,high,etc.)
  11. -tasks can have reminders/alerts at least in the Android app
  12. -can be target of share on Android, e.g. a text message, a URL, or an image can feed into the app and becomes a task
  13. -can easily transfer my existing tasks from Google Tasks
  14. -can share one of the task lists/categories with another person

current situation
I'm currently using GTasks on Android and a Chrome extension (Better Google Tasks), which essentially repackages This solution has much of the above, but the web interface is clunky and I'm really missing the ability to paste images.

which one?
I've read these are popular and good, but that's a lot to test every one of them. Any suggestions?
