Hi,

We are employing a new developer next week.

Our current developers have been working with us for a number of years and they have direct access to everything (which i know is not the best policy).

01 - What is the best way to rollout a new developer onto a project. We have a set roadmap for them to work on, so essentially they will need to access all of the code.

02 - How can you stop a developer from stealing the code, or at least put security precautions in place?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm an IT report developer with a few miles on my belt. Officially we are the Business Intelligence team. We use SAP Business Intelligence Suite 4.2, aka BusinessObjects. I remember James Martin back in the day (1990's) but haven't heard or read much about him, not that I'm the most well read person around. But I do have a pretty good library of software development books, from Karl Weigers to Steve McConnell to Gerald Weinberg, and "The Mythical Man Month". At the moment I'm trying to bring our organization into modern times in regards to Business Intelligence. What we have are awful legacy minded reports that no one uses, i.e., 85% of active OLTP users run NO reports (and the OLTP itself is a 1990's style system).

We are also trying to bring in Crystal Reports for high-end reporting, and other tools for "Dashboards".

Around here it's a totally legacy mindset, to include a CIO who's up there in years and is totally old-school, constantly referencing to James Martin and his approach. So is JM still a "classic" who's books should be on my shelf (to include reading them)? In order to influence the organization to "get modern", I have to start by convincing the CIO that there's a better way nowadays (to Business Intelligence).  Also, no one around here knows how to spell "agile".

Do you have a recommended James Martin classic or two, at least so I can be able to step up intellectually to where the CIO is coming from? And while I'm at it, any other classic books / …

Hello,

Now having a situations where there are 2 projects occurring, at the same time, on the same section of code in a webpage.  Looking for suggestions on how to manage each project so that project 1 doesn't overwrite code in project 2.  The projects are more complex then listed below.  The time to complete each project is usually due to slow movement from testing to production.

Simple Example:
Have an employee table and an employees info page.  Project 1: Format the phone number.  Project 2: Change the phone number from 1 column in the table to another column in the table.
Both would affect the same area of code in the web page.

Is there a standard way of managing this so the development doesn't overwrite each other when updated?  Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks
Jess

Hello EE,

I am looking for guidance on how your team defines IT projects v.s. just regular user requests and tasks?
Is it based on hours alone or collaboration among more than one person?

I have 12 specific people assigned to a task. I need to move 3 to a new task for 3 days and then back.
I need to be able to assign by the specific person for each task. How can I move people in and out of tasks?
Example:  Task 1 has all 12 individuals assigned for 3 weeks.  Then on day 7 I need to pull 3 specific people off and assign them to Task 2 for 4 days and then put them put them back on Task 1 for the remaining time.
What it the best way to accomplish this?  Can you suspend resources?

Is there any project management software that will allow a task to have a duration of less than a minute?  Is there a way for Microsoft Project to all for this?  (setting ".5 minute" does not really work)

Thanks

I want to take the PMP but afraid I don't have the experience required so alas I am probably going to take the CAPM. Do you all know the difference as far as studying is concerned?

I have Rita's PMP exam prep, but don't want to study 600+ if I can study her 400+ book for CAPM. I don't have the CAPM book yet for Rita, as it's a hefty price!!

Thanks

Hi,
I'm looking for a cloud-based todo/teamwork/project manager that does the following:
Each person in my organisation gets a login
Create a project (e.g setup new server)
Under this project, create & assign subtasks to different people and monitor their progress/comments
  Set due dates/reminders on subtasks
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hello

I am trying to design a structure for our team Sharepoint where all documents are kept.

We are the Messaging team, so manage Exchange, Blackberry, SMTP.

My general thought on directory structures is they should be xmas tree like, i.e. small options at the start getting larger and larger...agreed?

So for example we could have

Level 1; Product (Exchange, BB, SMTP)
Level 2: Project name
Level 3: Type (Architecture, client, financial, roadmap...

and so on.

Any recommendations?

Anyone know if there's a way for team members to quickly toggle swimlane display in a JIRA board on or off? It can be nice to have the swimlanes, but sometimes we just want to view the board without them...

I've been doing research on Data Governance (and feeling the pain of NOT having a D.G. program). I posted this question on EE about users and IT roles, and got really good feedback.

I have a presentation ready for management, just the basics of what is D.G. I was asked to find any templates or samples of D.G. policies and procedures. Can anyone help ? I'm doing my own continued research but thought I would post here to the experts.

One of my main resources is the book "Data Governance: How to Design, Deploy, and Sustain a D.G. Program", by John Ladley. It's a really good book, but it's mostly direction so when it's time to actually build a program, you're still looking for the tools.

Here's a company that does Data Governance consulting, Datum, so I've contacted them for info.

Just hoping someone can point me to some templates or sample D.G. policies / procedures.

Here's a diagram I did on the roles, what do you think ???

hi guys,

For PCI related reasons, we have to always fill in Change request forms when we want to make changes on a sensitive firewall. They are all Watchguard firewalls. The administration of it all is painful as you have to open up a Word document template and give it a ticket ID etc along with all of the details and save it whilst someone reviews and signs it off and makes a copy of it into a completed folder.

Do any of you do anything like this? Are there easier ways? Perhaps you use an online system or created one on your intranet?

Thanks for the help

There is anybody out there who can help me to make this working ?, I'm a hobby developer , working on a project management and would like to track the time spendt on project task.
I would really appreciate if someone adept in coding could tell me why this isn't working when placed within a form, but works when in its own form, and how to make it work embedded in my form.  All it does now is when you click [btnStartTime] the [lblTime] displays 00:00:01, and keeps flickering at the currect interval as if it should be counting, but its not changing at all.  The [btnStopTime] works, at least the flickering stops, so that tells me its stoping the cycles even if the time isn't acutally changing.  and [btnResetTime] sets [lblTime] to 00:00:00 as it should.

Thank you in advance for all your assistance.

I am working with MS project 2016.  I have a few tasks on which I want my resources to work 10 hour days.  I do not want to change the global settings for the whole project.  I only want 10 hour days for specific tasks.  I created a new calendar and changed the work times from 7am – 12pm and from 1pm to 6pm (10 hours).  I then selected the desired tasks and changed the calendar to this newly created one (task info, advanced tab, calendar).  The problem is, after making this change, it’s not calculating the cost correctly based on 10 hours per day.  For example, for one task I have two resources working for two days.  One resource is billed at $45/hr and the other is billed at $40/hr.  The cost for that task should be $1,700 (20*$40 + 20*$45).  However, the cost shown is $1,360 (16*$40 + 16*$45).  It’s still calculating the cost based on 8 hours per day.  How do I get Project to calculate the cost of this task based on working 10 hours per day?

Regards,
Kyle

Internal debate here about the IT Department (of which I am a member) which thinks it's the arbiter of all things - data and processes. As a result, the users have many workarounds, and they grumble and complain to no end.

I have been looking at Data Governance concepts and approaches, but they seem to  focus mostly on "securing data", "data quality", etc. which in practice is an IT function. In the book "Data Governance: How to Design, Deploy and Sustain an Effective Data Governance Program", there is no much mention of users, and nothing in the index, and just a brief chart on stakeholders - no discussion that they are the key.

Plus I've read a fair number of articles on Data Governance, and while the focus is on "governing" (as a leadership responsibility), it still seems to be an IT-centric function.

What I'm really looking for are resources to discuss the role of IT vs. business, with IT as the service organization, the importance of stakeholders, etc. I couldn't find anything with a web search, so posted this.

I am looking for a ticketing system, not for the purpose of team working, or work management. But for knowledge base for my self, where I can reference back / search on a topic already solved which can be a big help for a starting point, ideas, tools. Or just add on the go on topics I find.(Kind of moving from my word document to something batter designed and helpful in this field)
A big plus would be it should have a good phone app.
