Project Management

Project management is the discipline of carefully projecting or planning, organizing, motivating and controlling resources to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. A project is a temporary endeavor designed to produce a unique product, service or result with a defined beginning and end (usually time-constrained, and often constrained by funding or deliverables) undertaken to meet unique goals and objectives, typically to bring about beneficial change or added value.

Hello

I am trying to design a structure for our team Sharepoint where all documents are kept.

We are the Messaging team, so manage Exchange, Blackberry, SMTP.

My general thought on directory structures is they should be xmas tree like, i.e. small options at the start getting larger and larger...agreed?

So for example we could have

Level 1; Product (Exchange, BB, SMTP)
Level 2: Project name
Level 3: Type (Architecture, client, financial, roadmap...

and so on.

Any recommendations?

Anyone know if there's a way for team members to quickly toggle swimlane display in a JIRA board on or off? It can be nice to have the swimlanes, but sometimes we just want to view the board without them...

I've been doing research on Data Governance (and feeling the pain of NOT having a D.G. program). I posted this question on EE about users and IT roles, and got really good feedback.

I have a presentation ready for management, just the basics of what is D.G. I was asked to find any templates or samples of D.G. policies and procedures. Can anyone help ? I'm doing my own continued research but thought I would post here to the experts.

One of my main resources is the book "Data Governance: How to Design, Deploy, and Sustain a D.G. Program", by John Ladley. It's a really good book, but it's mostly direction so when it's time to actually build a program, you're still looking for the tools.

Here's a company that does Data Governance consulting, Datum, so I've contacted them for info.

Just hoping someone can point me to some templates or sample D.G. policies / procedures.

Here's a diagram I did on the roles, what do you think ???

hi guys,

For PCI related reasons, we have to always fill in Change request forms when we want to make changes on a sensitive firewall. They are all Watchguard firewalls. The administration of it all is painful as you have to open up a Word document template and give it a ticket ID etc along with all of the details and save it whilst someone reviews and signs it off and makes a copy of it into a completed folder.

Do any of you do anything like this? Are there easier ways? Perhaps you use an online system or created one on your intranet?

Thanks for the help

There is anybody out there who can help me to make this working ?, I'm a hobby developer , working on a project management and would like to track the time spendt on project task.
I would really appreciate if someone adept in coding could tell me why this isn't working when placed within a form, but works when in its own form, and how to make it work embedded in my form.  All it does now is when you click [btnStartTime] the [lblTime] displays 00:00:01, and keeps flickering at the currect interval as if it should be counting, but its not changing at all.  The [btnStopTime] works, at least the flickering stops, so that tells me its stoping the cycles even if the time isn't acutally changing.  and [btnResetTime] sets [lblTime] to 00:00:00 as it should.

Thank you in advance for all your assistance.

I am working with MS project 2016.  I have a few tasks on which I want my resources to work 10 hour days.  I do not want to change the global settings for the whole project.  I only want 10 hour days for specific tasks.  I created a new calendar and changed the work times from 7am – 12pm and from 1pm to 6pm (10 hours).  I then selected the desired tasks and changed the calendar to this newly created one (task info, advanced tab, calendar).  The problem is, after making this change, it’s not calculating the cost correctly based on 10 hours per day.  For example, for one task I have two resources working for two days.  One resource is billed at $45/hr and the other is billed at $40/hr.  The cost for that task should be $1,700 (20*$40 + 20*$45).  However, the cost shown is $1,360 (16*$40 + 16*$45).  It’s still calculating the cost based on 8 hours per day.  How do I get Project to calculate the cost of this task based on working 10 hours per day?

Regards,
Kyle

Internal debate here about the IT Department (of which I am a member) which thinks it's the arbiter of all things - data and processes. As a result, the users have many workarounds, and they grumble and complain to no end.

I have been looking at Data Governance concepts and approaches, but they seem to  focus mostly on "securing data", "data quality", etc. which in practice is an IT function. In the book "Data Governance: How to Design, Deploy and Sustain an Effective Data Governance Program", there is no much mention of users, and nothing in the index, and just a brief chart on stakeholders - no discussion that they are the key.

Plus I've read a fair number of articles on Data Governance, and while the focus is on "governing" (as a leadership responsibility), it still seems to be an IT-centric function.

What I'm really looking for are resources to discuss the role of IT vs. business, with IT as the service organization, the importance of stakeholders, etc. I couldn't find anything with a web search, so posted this.

I am looking for a ticketing system, not for the purpose of team working, or work management. But for knowledge base for my self, where I can reference back / search on a topic already solved which can be a big help for a starting point, ideas, tools. Or just add on the go on topics I find.(Kind of moving from my word document to something batter designed and helpful in this field)
A big plus would be it should have a good phone app.

We have a Salesforce instance (cloud) and a JIRA (inhouse) server. I want to push data from Salesforce to JIRA using REST. The problem is our firewall. We want to leverage an existing URL that we already use to PUSH Salesforce data to an inhouse app using SOAP. Let's pretend this url is https://salesforcein.myco.com.  The standard REST url for JIRA is jira.myco.net/rest/api

How can I hit https://salesforcein.myco.com from outside and somehow bridge it over to jira.myco.net/rest/api  ? I'm not a network guy but I plan on forwarding the solution to our network guys.

Thanks
Mike

Dears

I m the IT consultant of few companies.
For each company there are many projects going on that I need to track be it resources or follow up or even sometimes myself doing things ....

What is the tool you recommend to track and follow all of these ?

Thx
0
Advantage : you have an overview of all projects and leads of the projects
Disadvantage : it does not seem detailed enough for project follow up.

Is there any related tooling that we could use ?

Hello,

How can "Issue" "Status" be changed from "TO DO" to "IN PROGRESS" automatically after "Log work" is submitted ?

Hello experts,

Could any of you proficient in technical projects (IT upgrades, migrations, etc) perhaps point me in the right direction as to creating a "Project Operations Manual"? I was asked to produce this by the management. Would appreciate any help provided.

This should cover:
      • how we should do projects
      • how we should plan
      • how should we measure
      • general rules relating to project issues
      • notifications
      • general management of the project
      • what happens before a project starts
      • checklists
      • who manages what
      • project plans
      • approvals etc.
This should also include procedures for:
      • how to monitor projects
      • ensure SLA compliance
      • formal procedures for the on call roster
      • weekly report to show after compliance
      • plans for work not compliant
any other general business related to any active or recently closed projects.

Thank you

is there any benefit of the ITIL recommended "forward schedule of change", as opposed to just sending all affected users communications about the possible impact/downtime of the change for each specific change....

what benefits is a forward schedule of change have over individual comms per change, or should you do both - if so why?
