A server is a computer program or a machine that waits for requests from other machines or software (clients) and responds to them. This architecture is called the client–server model. The clients may run on the same computer or may connect to the server over a network. The purpose of a server is to share data or hardware and software resources among clients. Typical computing servers are database servers, file servers, mail servers, print servers, web servers, game servers, and application servers.

I read somewhere that time sync should be turned off in VM's but I can't find anything on why.

I’m trying to figure out when to use bitlocker on a server. It makes sense for a laptop or desktop. If they are stolen and the thief can’t login because it is password protected, they could still put the drive in another computer and access the data.

If I have a server in a locked room and there is no concern that it would be stolen, what are the benefits of encryption?

Even if someone did steal the server, it is RAID 5 so it would be a lot more difficult to add the drives to another server to access the data.  It would be easier to run a program to hack the password.

If it is configured to use a pin to start the server, it could not be rebooted remotely. If it shut down for any reason, someone would need to go onsite to start it up. That could create problems especially during storms.

The most likely way someone is going to steal the data from my clients is by tricking a user to install malware. If malware is installed on a workstation, it would be able to access the server whether it is encrypted or not.

Just looking for the pros and cons if encrypting a server

I have been running my Hyper-V Host server on a trial version of server software  and now  has expired .
I have a software with a valid license .
Do I need to back up the VM's Wipe out the server and reinstall Server 2012 ? or is there some way to simply use the new license ?

I am running VEEAM Backup & Replication 9.5 on a Windows Server 2012 R2. VEEAM is configured to backup VM's from 2 Hyper-V Servers that are running Windows Server Data Center 2012 R2. While all VM's backup successfully 'on occasion', often, I get the following error:

Failed to create snapshot (Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0) (mode: Veeam application-aware processing) Details: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT'
[/b]

I go to the VM Server identified, run the command "vssadmin list writers", and see that a number of VSS entries says 'timed out. I stop/start the Volume Shadow Copy service then restart the server. The backup jog then completes successfully. This issue will occur again after the 2nd or 3rd successful backup and again, I have to restart the server to get successful backups.

Obviously I cannot continue restarting these affected servers (all of which has databases including Exchange Server 2013). Is there anything that would likely cause the VSS services to periodically time out and fail a backup? Thanks

Moving 400G of data with long file paths causing copy issues. What is the best way to automatically move the data whether it be scripts or software? Folder Structure needs to remain intact, long file names can be changed (assuming they are copied into the same folder on the target.)

Thank you.

Hi,
I got problem, to put all 4 files (as attached) into one FTP site, that not all files can be successfully processed. But there is no problem at all, if I one by one, put the file, there is no problem to process all files. What can be the reasons to this?

So I didn't select a Desktop Experience while installing Server Standard 2016.   And looks like it installed a Core Edition.  Just a CMD command line.
Does is mean no Desktop Experience is a Core Experience?

Hello - I have a Security Device Scope set on my DHCP server.

10.201.192.20
10.201.207.254

255.255.240.0 /20

What I want to do is assign another scope within my Security Device Scope for 10 Camera, 10 Card Readers and 2 Media Servers. How would I break that scope up into other scopes for the following devices, however using the Security Device Scope?

Thanks,

In this screenshot what is the exact location of the Test Test user (see the bottom of the screenshot)? Is it OU=users,DC=company,DC=com or is it something else?

The domain name for this organization is company.com

I'm sure this is something simple I've missed but I built a new DC. I enabled Remote Desktop Connections in server manager and I'm unable to get a connection to it. The RDP windows times out before it even sees the DC using FQDN or IP address.

RDP to the new DC was working when my old DC was running so I assumed this was a DNS issue (which would mean RDP to IP would work but it does not).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
David

Hello -

I am trying to create a query that will give me all my Windows 7 x64 and x86 systems.

What I have is this below, however it doesn't give me the details I want. I want it to list OS, IP, Name, client active or not and whether or not it's a x64 or x86 system.

select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.ResourceId = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_R_System.OperatingSystemNameandVersion like "%Workstation 6.1%" or SMS_R_System.OperatingSystemNameandVersion like "%Windows 7%" and SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.SystemType = "x64-based PC"

I run this for x86 and it gives me same result as the query above

select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.ResourceId = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_R_System.OperatingSystemNameandVersion like "%Workstation 6.1%" or SMS_R_System.OperatingSystemNameandVersion like "%Windows 7%" and SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.SystemType = "x86-based PC"

Thanks,

Morning techs,

I work for a large Computer Aided Dispatch software support company.  We supply the HW and SW that runs in Police and Fire Departments all over the world.

At my Tier, the Tier one we basically gather logs and screenshots from the dispatchers computers to escalate tickets to the Engineers.  There is an error report functionality but the DISPATCHER (whom you know is extremely busy) must MANUALLY run it themselves at time of event.

Are there any *light* tools out there that can be installed onto the dispatchers computers that would log error reports automatically?

Computers are running Win 7 with just the dispatching SW

Thank you,

I have a customer with a SBS 2003 and the server became infected with the .amnesia infection.  Unfortunately it also attacked many of the servers executable file such as Seagate Backup Exec.  I ran a thorough scan on all workstations.  I installed Microsoft Essentials and Spyhunter on a workstation.  I copied the data folder from the server to a new folder called server on the workstation.  I was told that Spyhunter 4 would detect and remove/repair the infection.  I ran a full scan and it does not seem to see the infected files that are obviously infected because they all have the extension .amnesia.  Does anyone have a recommendation for the repair and removal of this infection in the data files?

Good morning,

I have the following disadvantage, currently in my organization uses a tool called HP Service Manager CMDB to perform the discovery of all servers in its infrastructure.

When I try to perform the discovery of two Windows servers through the tool I encounter the following errors:

- error: java.lang.Exception: The object exporter specified was not found.
- error: java.lang.Exception: Failed to connect to Wmi:RPC Server not available

I have doubt and could be an error internally of the tool and the operating system, since the firewall is disabled and I do not know what else could be happening.

Stay tuned to your comments.

Hi

We have SQL database files on the computer Windows 7 Pro x64. We use Asigra for Cloud Backup. Asigra is using VSS backup. The backup started failing a week ago with the error message:
"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." when trying to access .ldf and .mdf files.
I checked the permissions and it is fine. I tried adding exceptions to AVG antivirus but AVG could not access files either.
I used Process Explorer and the files are in use by sqlserv (64 bit) and not sqlserv*32. I checked on another computer we have similar set up and the same backup type and the files over there are not in use by any process.

How can I fix it?

Tom

Hi,

We are looking for a self hosted 'dropbox' style software that will give us all the functionality of dropbox, but with the program and master copy of the files hosted on our server.
We currently have dropbox installed on our server and have shared the folder using windows shares for approx. 10 local computers. As the files are hosted in dropbox, we are able to give access, via dropbox, to a number of external users and organisations. This is great, as they can view files from the web portal, laptops and mobile devices - without any complex configuration.

Our issues with dropbox are:

1. It's not really designed for this sort of scenario (shared over the LAN), but we dont want to install the client on every computer, as files wont be locked when in use by other users which leads to duplicates. Additionally, if dropbox crashes on one computer, and the client doesn't notice, it will lead to a backlog of unsynced files. Multiply this by 10 computers and it can get rather messy.

2. Dropbox doesn't officially run as a system service, which means a user account must always be logged in on the server. It is also increasingly prone to crashing. We are increasing having to log into the server to restart dropbox

3. As external users and organisations increase, it’s becoming increasing difficult to track the amount of dropbox accounts and shares that we have

4. Dropbox is usually stuck syncing thousands of files to their server, and is never fully upto date with the…

We have a client that needs to integrate Sharepoint into their network. How should I bring this into their network?

They currently have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard server (DC, DNS - Single Server) and Office 365 business plan through Microsoft.

What is the best route? And why use Sharepoint instead of something else?

Hi all,

Microsoft tells me to use this command:
$Session = New-PSSession -ConfigurationName Microsoft.Exchange -ConnectionUri http://<FQDN of Exchange 2010 server>/PowerShell/ -Authentication Kerberos

It says so in this link: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd297932(v=exchg.141).aspx

I get this error:

Good morning All

I have a developer who wants to run a powershell script to check IIS web server configurations and changes including registry, and also use the script to configure new IIS web servers so that they will all be identical.  Is running a PS script a good way to do this or is he re-inventing the wheel?  Is there a product that will do this is a more secure / controlled fashion?

Many thanks
