A server is a computer program or a machine that waits for requests from other machines or software (clients) and responds to them. This architecture is called the client–server model. The clients may run on the same computer or may connect to the server over a network. The purpose of a server is to share data or hardware and software resources among clients. Typical computing servers are database servers, file servers, mail servers, print servers, web servers, game servers, and application servers.

Hello All;

I am hunting for a Streaming Media Server (software), that will allow me to do the following.

#1: Using a web-based page, to start and stop the stream.
#2: Add songs to the stream and remove songs from the stream through the web page

Shoutcast, Windows Media Services (now the new (smooth streaming in newer servers)), Icecast (I have installed, but cannot seem to get it working).

I found this for playing the stream through my website.
http://jplayer.org/latest/demo-08/
So, that would work for playing the LIVE stream.
Now, just need to find a media server.

With WMS (Window Media Services) (2008 and below of Windows Servers)
I can create a Playlist with asp classic or net, and have it run through a database, LOOP and create a playlist.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd564552(v=vs.85).aspx
However. What if I remove a song, or add a song.
Will the playlist update itself with the LIVE Stream? Or will the station have to be stopped and started up again?
That might have to be. I might have to play a commercial or some kind of a jingle or a station break whenever the update needs to take place.
(Just letting my mind wonder while writing this up.)

My dream is to run a radio station of sorts, from my home.
To add and remove songs from the stream through a web page, no matter where I am at.

Once I can get something like this up and running, I can then modify it in the future.
I would just like to get a station up and …

I am wondering if anyone is experiencing any issues with Server 2016. I am building two new servers that will use AD DS and DFS and wondering if we go with Server 2012 R2 or 2016.

When using File Screening in Windows 2012 R2, if users have existing exe or jpg in folders that are part of the file screening policy, what happens to those files? Are they in violation or is it only for future exe or jpg files written to the folders?

Experts:

I did a print server migration for our company, all went well but dealing with a nagging issue where one user can print letterhead perfectly fine and the next prints on the wrong side. Putting settings side-by-side I don't see any differences as to why this is happening. Typically all drivers used from the printers are universal to keep things simple but specific and generic drivers: same result no settings I see to make the printing uniform.

Suggestions!?

Thanks ahead of time!!!

Hi,

When I try change services SMTP of certificate that will expire to new certificate done correctly, I not see the message of re-write certificate existing and I receive the follow error:

The Exchange Certificate operation has failed with an exception on server XXXXXXX.  The error message is: Unknown error (0xe0434352)
    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (:) [Enable-ExchangeCertificate], LocalizedException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=nameserver,RequestId=da203e5e-a443-4da8-be75-72b5603ebe66,TimeStamp=28/02/2017 10:40:06] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-LocalizedException] 226FBD71,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.EnableExchangeCertificate
    + PSComputerName        : server.domain.local

After, I can see the service SMTP assigned to the new certificate but isn´t correct.

The problem is that when expire the old certificate, the service down!

Any suggestion?

Thanks guys!

We recently purchased three APC  SMART-UPS 1500's and their Management Cards ( that have Ethernet connections)

I was able to install the cards and assign them IP addresses and look around their menus.

We have two Windows 2008 and one Windows 2012 Servers that are plugged into the UPS's.  I do NOT have any of the COM ports or USB cables connected to the Servers ( I was hoping the IP connections would take care of communications)

I have both the Business Powerchute software ( and the personal powerchute ) software available to me but I dont understand the APC "environment or schema or perhaps I am just confused by their lingo"  The business powerchute client seems to want only to look for COM or USB connected UPS.s  ( thats were I am confused)

Couldnt the Server software be "informed" by the management Card that its time to shut down ?  AM I MISSING THE POINT ?

What I was hoping is that when the building power fails or just one of the circuits on the wall fails, the management card will somehow tell the server its time to shut down gracefully before its batteries reach 5% or XX percent.

If I enable Disk Quota function in Windows 2012 R2 (not FSRM), & I select a specific existing user to limit their data quota to a specific amount, what happens to their existing data that they own on that volume? Does it get counted towards their data quota or is it only new data that they write to the volume that gets counted?

In a previous question I explained a problem I was having with MySQL memory. I took many of the recommended steps and have seen some improvement.

But the regular cycle I'm seeing has become even more pronounced.  If you look at the attached image, you'll see that the Real Memory climbs for 24 hours then does a drastic drop right around 3:30am EST.

I was able to take a picture of memory allocation right before and after the drop which is shown in the image.  You'll notice that the big changed occurred in the "Slab" and "SReclaimable" listings.

I'm trying to understand a few things.

  • What might contribute to the steady increase in Slab & SReclaimable throughout the day.
  • How do I find what is causing it to be "cleaned out" at 3:30am every day.
  • What logs or processes can I monitor/provide that will assist with discovering what is happening.

Thank you.

Graphs showing memory increase plus memory dumps
Here's what the memory now looks like five hours after the reset.

We are looking at alternative network / system monitoring options to Solarwinds, ideally that are cheaper or even free.

I only want answers from people that are using these alternative solutions with some detail about the sort of thing that they are monitoring with the solution.  If you have previously used Solarwinds then I would be interested in how the solutions compare.

The sort of thing we are interested in are:-

  1. Monitoring nodes (Linux, Windows & switches) (packet loss, downtime etc).
  2. Services (restarting failed services).
  3. Network bandwidth and bottlenecks
  4. Overall system & network healthchecks

I am interested in the best answer, not the quickest.  If you just give me a product name or a Google search result then you will not get any points!   :)

Thanks!

Hey guys

We have a 7 person office and we use Dropbox to share files. We are concerned about security. What's a better alternative solution to collaborate on files? We are a law firm if that helps.

I have the OS on a flash drive. The problem is that it is NTFS. So I saved the ISO to my laptop and formatted the USB drive to FAT32 (required by the server's setup assistance software). The problem that I did not see coming is the 4GB restriction on files in FAT32. I have a 5.3 GB Server 2016 ISO that I need to get onto a bootable FAT32 USB stick. The server does not have an optical drive. Does anyone have a way to accomplish this?

Hello -

I inherited a small network where the CA has been taken of without being properly decommission. Is it possible to just install CA on the current DC(Win 2012 R2) and make the machines (group policy?)on the network  get certificates from the new one?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Experts:

I just did a fresh install and brought all windows updates up to date. I set one NIC to 10.250.89.x and another to 10.250.86.x, I can ping anything FROM the server (Server3). However from servers (Server 1 and 2) even on the same 10.250.89.x or 86.x I cannot ping the newly created server.  One of the network adapters on Server3 keeps coming up with "Unauthenticated". To remedy that I have:
-Tried disjoining and rejoining the domain
-Removed and re-added network cards in device manager.
-Tried other IPs
-Set Firewall to manual and restarted.
-Tried only configuring ONE network card. Same results.
-Route Print looks the same as working servers
There is no firewall between the devices and vlan 89 and 86 are setup everywhere in between. Similar servers with exact same setup you can ping to and from. Has to be something solely on Server3 but I don't know what it is?

Thanks!

Hi, this is my first time on Exchange Experts, so forgive me if I don't provide you with enough info. I have a problem with Outlook searching shared mailboxes using Outlook 2010 with Exchange. There's a form that gets emailed to two shared mailboxes after a user completes it and submits it on our website. OWA is able to search the mailboxes and return search results. However, when doing the same in Outlook 2010 (search terms are either first or last name), the search will return a result with a first name but no result when looking for the last name or vice versa. If I email the form to my personal mailbox it will turn up results. The shared mailboxes are added as separate accounts and not under the main user's profile. I didn't search to see if there's a thread on this because I'm so desperate, but if there is one I'd be grateful if someone could point me toward it. I will definitely do so before posting again. Thanks for any help you can provide.

My windows 10 pro laptop suddenly had black wallpaper.  I clicked on Personalize but got windows error messages about missing files.

I loaded a restore point from 6 days ago, which automatically turned off my machine.  I powered up and logged in as normal. Everything looked fine including network drives.

But, just to be sure, I rebooted one more time and discovered I could not log on.  I got the dreaded

the trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed

Strange, because there was no password change in the last few months.

Anyway I disconnected the Cat5 and was able to logon using the cached credentials.

I reconnected cat5 and navigated to \\Server01\NetworkShare  and supplied Server Administrator credentials.

Once again the laptop looked fine, all network files were available etc.

I was even able to change my password from  DecemberPass to TodaysPass.  In the past, that usually restored the trust relation, but not today.  I have to disconnect the cat5, then log on with old password, then connect to \\server with server administrator password.

The laptop is going to be decommissioned next month, so I want to have the most trouble fee approach possible.  In fact, I may simply live with the damaged desktop and use the cat5 disconnect until then.

But, I have seen a website that says the following powershell commands are nearly foolproof and will not damage my user profile.  I have my doubts, …

Hello EE,

I am helping to submit a "deployment summary " for microsoft . I was seeking clarification .  I fI use a third party cloud provider ( vmware 5 with windows 2012 OS ) Am I still required to submit a deployment summary for the servers I use for my production env ? The licensing is covered by the cloud provider as part of the monthly rate .

I installed Cerebrus ftp server and using FileZilla and FTP Voyager as clients.
I can connect and browse the server over port 21 without any issue.

When using SSL/TLS connection over port 990 I can connect (Port open in firewall), but the ftp client cannot retrieve the directory listing.
I tried over active and passive connections with no luck.

Is there any other configuration on the firewall that could prevent directory listing over secure FTP ?  If not is there anything else on the ftp client I have to setup in order to get the directory listing to work ?

Hello EE,

I was told that there is only one supported method for backing up Cisco Phone systems with SFTP or something?
I am struggling to find something online for VOIP Call Manager and Unified backups.

Any best practice or requirements would be great.

Hi,

We need to install Server 2016 on a new server.

I cannot find a comprehensive feature comparison that shows the differences between Essentials, Standard and Datacenter.

For example, with Server 2012, there is this - which was really helpful:
