i am replacing a domain controller server running 2008r2 with a new box running 2016
the current server has exchange 2007 running it as well it will be upgrade to exchange 2016

question is are there any best practices to do such a move?
are there any quick steps or will it be painstakingly long to do?

many thanks a head of time

Important Lessons on Recovering from Petya

In their most recent webinar, Skyport Systems explores ways to isolate and protect critical databases to keep the core of your company safe from harm.

Hi,
Having trouble with workstations running a new software program that uses a SQL DB on an SBS 2011 server (Medtech32 Medical Software.)
Disabling the Server's Firewall allows it to run on the workstations.  I've added the Firewall rules to the Server as stated by Medtech but it still doesn't connect.  Any ideas?
The ports as per their docs are:
TCP Port 3050  on internal LAN/WAN
UDP Port 300 on internal LAN/WAN

Thanks.

I am looking at the various way to copy files from a users local PC to a specific folder location - on a Remote Server.  Essentially, it would work in the following way:

  • User copies files on local PC
  • They switch to the RDP server
  • Press a button on our application that runs a script and pastes the file into a specific folder

We need this paste function to run int the background and I was wondering if we could use Powershell to do this.  Incidentally, our server is running 2012 R2.

Hi, I built a server in a KMS license environment and then moved it to a DMZ, so it needs to be activated by phone.

I've got a MAK code, which has been used all over the estate, and i've used:

slmgr -upk (to remove the kms links)
slmgr -ipk <mak> (to add the new key)

and it says it's loaded successfully but when I run slui /4 it says Access Denied, contact your administrator. (Hi!) and when i run slui it asks me for a key.  If I use the same key, as before it says This key didn't work, please check it and try again or try a different key.

I get this in event viewer (googling now) - License Activation (slui.exe) failed with the following error code:
hr=0xC004F074

Any tips?

We are testing Cisco AnyConnect on one of our Cisco ASA 5545s.  I need to know how to add one of our networks so that VPN users can access their servers on that network while connected at home.  Can someone walk me through how to do this and how to find the existing networks that are reachable?  I can do it through ASDM or command prompt.  Thanks!

Hi
Environment: Windows 2012R2 Server, IIS 8.5

I have a classic .asp script which uses "wscrip.shell" to call an external .exe to create LARGE .zip files on the fly and send them to the client browser. While this process is running, other requests to the server are blocked (well they stay in the queue) but this is not acceptable for minutes. I already increased the maximum number of worker processes in the advanced settings of the application pool associated with the site. But like this, I loose my sessions, because they are tied to the worker process. A following page request could be processed by any of the worker processes and session state seems not to be shared amongst the worker processes. Thefore the user possibly looses it's session variables with each page request. Re-Designing the application without sessions would be possible but taking to long in actual emergency.

Is there an option to connect a VR headset (e.g HTC VIVE or Oculus) remotely.

there will be a server that will have the program and will connect via RDP or something else, but the headset will be connected to the local client.

I think I saw VMware CEO do it. with their own program/ infrastructure.

I wonder how can I accomplish it.

Hi,

    Please see the diagram attached for a better idea of the setup. I am planning on deploying a pair of ACS servers in a cluster. Is it best to deploy the ACS servers in datacenter 2 behind a load balancer such as a F5? Also, is there a document/books which can be recommended which explains the different cluster deployment scenarios and how to pretty much configure an ACS from scratch?

Thank you

We require software / hardware for a small business that we support.

We need software that will block access to social media sites etc . We are aware that DrayTek routers have a web filtering solution which we have used but we need a more advanced software / proxy program to control which users access which websites on our network.

We want to allow for example some pages in youtube but not all so it needs to be fairly advanced.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated :)

Hi Experts,

I have a strange problem with a new RDS solution and I'm struggling to understand why it's happening.

When users connect to our servers via an RDP link on the RDweb page, their language is switched to Dutch/Belgian from ENG UK.   If we change it to ENG UK, it switches right back to NDL right in front of our eyes!

It doesn't seem to be happening to everyone, but at first it was just one user and now it's a few of us.  I need to get my head around it fast before it gets out of hand.

We have 2 x RDS gateways, 2 x brokers, 2 x app servers.    These provide RDP links to servers in various other domains.  The weird part is, we've never installed NDL onto any of these servers...  they were always UK and US keyboards until we put RDS in.

We do have users in Belgium who need the correct keyboard when they connect to the 10 servers they need, so having NDL for them isn't a problem.   But now RDS seems to have put it onto all 500 of our servers, as the default language and keeps changing it back from UK to NDL, within a few sections of manually changing it!

This is causing staff to lock out their passwords, which is a nightmare for us, them and the security team!

The RDS servers are all 2012, The servers we RDP to are mostly 2012 and 2008R2, it's changing the keyboard settings on these and whilst users are on the RDweb page.

Bizarrely  a reboot of the client seems to temporarily resolve it.. I even tried to force the language settings from the …

Hi.

I am trying to hunt down some free online chat software. It has to run on Server 2008R2 or Windows 10, either under IIS or stand alone.  Just need users to be able to connect in on port 80 or 443 and start chatting. Not interesting in a hosted solution.

Anyone able to recommend something?

There are a few questions I have about a connection I want to make to a shared folder that's on an NTFS volume.  What I wanted to achieve was to have a single, non-admin user account on that target machine to which I only know the password.  The shared folder would give that user account full control while denying full control to all other accounts including administrators.  In other words, if you forget the password, you cannot access the data unless you remove the hard drive itself from the machine.  I would think that this would make it difficult for the likes of Ransomware to encrypt the contents and my backups would be relatively safe.

Next would be to program a backup software to perform nightly backups to this folder.  In this example, I'm using Veeam Endpoint Protection.  The software is programmed with said user account and performs backups nightly.  I'm assuming that while Veeam uses the username and password to open a connection, other programs and users on that originating computer cannot.  In other words, Veeam has a private connection using said credentials.

Is this correct?  Please let me know what you think.

Hello!

I have a PHP script that should create a valid image file on server side. The following code runs fine:
$filename = $_GET['filename'];

// Only proceed if we got valid input
if ($filename !== null) {
    echo "$filename is not null.";
    $image = @imagecreatetruecolor(10, 10)
                or die('Cannot Initialize new GD image stream');

    if (strpos($image, '/gif') !== false) {
        $image_type = "GIF";
        header('Content-Type: image/gif');
        $successful = imagegif($image, "./$filename");
    } else if (strpos($image, '/jpeg') !== false) {
        $image_type = "JPG";
        header('Content-Type: image/jpeg');
        $successful = imagejpeg($image, "./$filename");
    } else if (strpos($image, '/png') !== false) {
        $image_type = "PNG";
        header('Content-Type: image/png');
        $successful = imagepng($image, "./$filename");
    }

    if ($successful) {
        echo "Image written to '$filename'.";
    } else {
        echo "Could not write $image_type image to '$filename'.";
    }
    imagedestroy($image);
    echo "image destroyed.";
} else {
    echo "$filename is null.";
}

This works fine & an image with the $filename is created. But actually, I do not only receive the file name but the image content as well. So, the real code is

$filename = $_GET['filename'];

$image = $_GET['image'];

// Only proceed if we got valid input
if ($filename !== null) {
    echo "$filename is not null.";
    $image = base64_decode($image);
    $slash1 = strpos($image, '/');

    $image_type = substr($image, $slash1, strpos($image, ';') - $slash1);

    if (file_exists($filename)) unlink($filename);

    header('Content-Type: image/' . $image_type);

    switch ($image_type) {
        case "gif":
            $successful = imagegif($image, "./$filename");
            break;
        case "jpeg":
        case "jpg":
            $successful = imagejpeg($image, "./$filename");
            break;
         case "png":
            $successful = imagepng($image, "./$filename");
            break;
    }
    if ($successful) {
        echo "Image written to '$filename'.";
    } else {
        echo "Could not write $image_type image to '$filename'.";
    }
    imagedestroy($image);
    echo "image destroyed.";
} else {
    echo "$filename is null.";
}

But still, I get the reply Could not write image to 't.jpg'. Can you see my error(s)?

Friday, 15/9, the network worked.
After the weekend it is not possible to connect with the server!

There appears to be a problem with the network connection. On the network icon in the process line there is a red cross. But the server can communicate with the Internet.

I have updated driver for network adapter, etc.

Any suggestions?

It's an SBS 2008 with Win7 workstations.

Which is a way to reset the Windows Server 2016 updates? I used the GWX Control Panel. But it still shows a bunch of failed updates in the list.

I am curious about finding the cost to a big bank to process something like a bank transfer from one account to another...

I am thinking about my bank, where I have two accounts, where I may move a few hundred dollars from one account to another.

Is the cost less than a penny for such a transaction for a website or an iPhone app to make such a transfer? I assume there are overhead costs where auditors review blocks of transactions, but I am not asking about that. Just the marginal cost for a hosted and highly secure website to process a transaction.

Does anyone have an idea about this?

We have several Remote Desktop Servers (Windows 2008R2) that are optimized as much as we can for the time being. We have budgeted for upgrades but in the mean time, has anyone used RDP Acceleration software such as Ericom, etc with any luck?

Can anyone recommend such a product?

Hi Expert, Please see the attached screenshot. I am installing Solarwinds. but I got an error message. I do not know what SQL server name is to fill the SQL server name. I tried different name including the computer name. During the process of installation, I follow the steps to install, which include automatic SQL installation. Did I miss some step or wrong? Thank you
