Smartphones

A smartphone or smart phone is a mobile phone with an advanced mobile operating system that combines features of a personal computer operating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use. They typically combine the features of a cell phone with those of other popular mobile devices, such as personal digital assistant (PDA), media player and GPS navigation unit. Most smartphones can access the Internet, have a touchscreen user interface, can run third-party apps, music players and are camera phones. Most Smartphones produced from 2012 onwards also have high-speed mobile broadband 4G LTE internet, motion sensors, and mobile payment mechanisms.

I have added a home location to Google Maps on my Galaxy S6 phone, but am not able to add a work location.

On the screen where you set these addresses (Your places, labelled), my home address is there, and there is a spot for my work address, but when I tap "set work address". the box flashes to acknowledge the tap, but nothing happens.
In researching the problem, I found some mention that "Web & App Activity" must be on for setting your work address. So I went to the settings, and there is a line that say it is off, but no indicator of how to change it.

Every search I do is filled with discussion about not being able to set a work address because Google Maps won't accept a name of a place. My problem is different since I don't have the opportunity to add anything.

I have an Exchange Server 2010 that is currently running activesync and 3 phones are syncing with it.  The server name and the SSL certificate all references the firms old domain name.  I set this up 4 years ago with the assistance of paid for technical support and have forgotten most of what we had to do.  I have googled articles about it but have not found anything that goes into details.  Does anyone have a link to a good set of instructions for modifying or setting it up?

I was just reading Andrew Leniart's entertaining tale of dealing with a client's network connection issue. (Go check it out... I'll wait...)

Ok, cool, now that you've read it, I'm sure it's something many of you have encountered—user says that they restarted something, but clearly they didn't. Made me think that in the current era where smartphones with cameras are so ubiquitous, a way to verify that the device in question actually had power would be to have the client take a photo of it and send that to you. Then you could know if A.) they were looking at the right device and B.) the power lights were really on.

Think it'd work? You ever try anything like that? Oh, and if you've got a similar SysAdmin tale, be sure to go comment on that same post!

Typing on mobile: some thoughts

I was thinking the other day about smartphones and how I often don't like to type on them. I'm just so used to typing on full-size keyboards, that typing on mobile is like swimming in molasses. And it's really a shame, because in so many other ways, my iPhone is incredibly convenient.

But then, I thought about how speech to text these days is pretty decent, and perhaps the best approach would be to just use Siri for dictation instead of trying to type. I've held off on such things, because I'm old enough (and had enough bad experiences with flaky computer dictation long ago) that psychologically, it feels really weird to talk to a computer.

But in this case, my computer is a phone.

And that means: I feel weird talking to a phone.

Which is kind of weird, don't you think?

What about you? Do you type on your smartphone a lot? Or do you use Siri/Cortana/Google for dictation? Does talking to your phone feel weird or is it totally normal for you?

Stacy: I'm curious... Why do you hate talk to text?
Not speaking for Stacy, but I too get frustrated with 'Siri' sometimes, especially so if I'm driving and try to initiate a hands free call to some of my contacts. I tend to drive with my windows fully down almost all year round so I guess the ambient noise probably doesn't help, but it can be incredibly frustrating when two out of three calls tend to work perfectly!

A typical example goes something like this..
1. Hey Siri, call Tom Smith, office..  "Calling, Tom Smith.. office"   Tick! - Successful call
2. Hey Siri, call Bob Jones, mobile.. "Calling Bob Jones.. mobile"  Tick! - Successful call
3. Hey Siri, call Jennifer Clayton, office..  "Calling John Mechanic, office.."  Huh?!?!

Might take two or three attempts before she finally gets it right and I've had to explain myself a few times when not paying much attention to Siri's answers (which most times I'm not) and the call goes through to someone I had no intention of calling.

One amusing time she wrongly called my dental surgery and I ended up making an appointment for a routine checkup during the call. Turned out I needed a filling so that call ended up costing me about $150.00!! lol..

I'm sure others must have also experienced this phenomenon as well? :)

One reason of not liking talk to text if you ever been on the end of the message that has not been read over before sending is really confusing and can cause some problems.

Second reason just listening to someone use talk to text is simply annoying to me. I don't want to hear the conversation you are having.

This is just my opinion.

I used this Note 5 for 2+ years with a great experience.  Great phone - large bright screen 5.7" 2560x1440 pixels, fast 4GB RAM and 32GB Storage, 16mp camera.   All good except.. battery life is terrible.  Time for an upgrade.
Should I stick with Samsung and go with Note 8 or what would be other recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Any recommendations on data backup of apps?  Maybe it can load the latest apps that ive downloaded from the Play Store?  I've tried Easy Backup, My Backup, and Google Backup.  They all seem to not work well.

Is there a feature available within a Samsung Galaxy S8 to allow rings and notifications only from certain phone numbers? This feature is available for iPhones and now I'm trying to figure out how to activate this feature on a Samsung Galaxy S8 cell phone

This is a very important feature for me to have while I'm sleeping and only want to be disturbed by certain people.

What are the best apps for having additional phone numbers on a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone besides Google Voice?

I am looking to link another phone number to my Samsung Galaxy S8 cell phone. I already have Google voice installed on this phone and need to add yet another phone number to this phone.

What are the best Android apps for doing this?

I'm going to be starting a project where I need to be able to answer my phone 24 hours a day.

I also need to be able to completely silence all other alerts from my phone so the only times I will be woken up will be if someone calls or texts my Google voice number.

Is there a way to completely turn off new call, email, & text alerts on Samsung Galaxy S8 accept for Google Voice alerts?

A client of mine would like to know which email address is associated with his Google Voice number.

We have the client's Google voice number and now need to determine which Gmail email address it is associated with.

How can this be done?

I just signed out of a Google Voice account on my Samsung Galaxy S8 phone.

I have logged in with another Google Voice account which is the one I want to have associated with my cell phone.

The problem is that when I make phone calls using my Samsung Galaxy S8 phone the caller ID for the most recent Google Voice account (510-xxx-xxxx) displays instead of the caller ID for the other Google voice account I have switched back to (415-xxx-xxxx).

I also remember that when I have set up Google Voice numbers in the past that these Google Voice numbers have given me the option to fully integrate Google Voice with my Sprint PCS phone (which is what I want to do now). However I am not given this option at this time.

What do I need to do to fix this issue so that the phone number associated with my 415 area code Google voice number will display whenever I make phone calls?

If you keep the mobile phones safe in your pocket or purse, it's still at risk for picking up a virus or leaking data to thieves. Hackers don't need physical access to your phone to steal your personal information or infect the device with malware. They infiltrate your phone with innocent-looking apps or link to it via unsecured Wi-Fi networks. A Technology blogging site (http://www.mobileblog24.com/ ) talking about this problem. Before some days I take my new phone from online shopping site (https://www.buymobile.com.bd/). Some informative site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/ ) also provide disadvantage of hacking. Now I want to know how can protect my mobile phone from being hacked?

Hi experts,

One of the options on WhatsApp is deleting your account. Given the account is tied to your cell phone, does that mean if you open another account, you will not be able to use that phone number?

I recently turned in an iPhone 5 at the end of a project.

This iPhone 5 is now out of state.

Is there a way for me to logon to my iTunes account on the internet and remove my iTunes account from this iPhone 5 without me having to have the iPhone 5 in front of me?

My OS is win 10 Pro 64 bit.  I bought a new Micro USB Charger/Sync cable because my mobile LG phone would no show up on iTunes despite having the latest copy.  Then while researcing one of the solutions was that possibly the drivers are out of date, and this should be the first port of call.
Is there any free utility for me to scan my pc to see if all my windows 10 drivers are uptodate or not and then go to the particular site and update the driver.  Thank u

Hi,

I would like to know how I can send messages using an Amazon Echo to a mobile phone as well as being able to call any phone.

In relation to this:

- The phone being called can be landline or mobile
- It would be a call from an Echo to phone and not Echo to Echo
- The Echo should be able to receive message and calls as well as send
- Would it be free to send messages and make calls in this way
- Also, would anything else be needed to make this work

Thanks,
Robbie

I am a deaf individual and have never been able to use the telephone efficiently due to the fact that I need to lipread.  I sometimes hear snippets of the conversation, but not reliably enough to conduct a professional conversation.  I am not the only one in this boat either.

Over the years I have tried assisted typing services and even voice recognition apps, but I am yet to find anything that works effectively.  Last year I obtained a small grant and put this into the development of an Android voice recognition app, but unfortunately it didn't work very well and I ran out of funding.  I was dealing with an Indian firm and I think they were using an off the shelf online service to process the speech, which was very unreliable and led to unacceptable delays in the processed text appearing on screen.  It was clear to me after this experience that I need to work with experts in the field to stand a chance of success.

I've been toying with the idea of setting up a crowdfunding project to help develop an app that can overcome the obstacles faced by millions of deaf people.  But first It would be helpful to obtain opinions from voice recognition experts, for instance, what is the current state of play in the field?  What limitations are we going to face?  What sort of money are looking at?  Obviously I'm going to need to quantify the whole process before I can put it before the crowd funders or investors.

I'd love to find any interested experts I can work with towards …
