What are your favorite smartphone apps?

Calendar, Gmail, Google Drive, SNote, and Etsy. Basically, all the practical apps that keep me organized and on top of things. I was using a sleep app to monitor my cycles, but I've decided to just stop sleeping.

Ha! I know the feeling! I've started using the "Bedtime" feature in iOS's built-in Clock app to remind me to go to bed though, otherwise... yeah... I have a definite tendency to want to stay up too late. I wish I could stop sleeping, but it's never worked out too well ;-)

Within the state of California where are the legal parts of a windshield where a cell phone windshield mount can be placed?

I've heard that there are only certain places within California where a cell phone can be mounted to a windshield.

Hi, I have a digital art project I'm currently a part of, and I really need a long line with no gaps. As you can see below, there are gaps in between every em dash I put. ↓↓↓

It is also important to note that I am doing this project on my phone; therefore, solutions available for Android phones will be highly appreciated.

Please reply soon, because the due date for this project is close. Thank you. :)

Client has just traded in their BMW.  Their iPhone was paired with the car by Bluetooth.

How do we make sure that all the private data, contact information, navigation history, is securely removed from the car?

Thanks.

I have a client whose company has a specific office 365 account for contacts only. The entire company adds contacts to it and it has ~7850 contacts in it. No one has problems syncing to this account on their phone for contacts except for one user. He complains that his sync is completed but his phone shows only 7650 contacts, missing about 200. His Outlook on his PC is showing 7850.

I have had him remove the account and re-add it. I removed the account from the mobile devices list in 365 admin and had him restart his phone to re-sync completely, it leads to the same number when done.  I also checked and he has full access to every contact and group.

When done syncing he says he does have the latest contacts added as well but is concerned about the number shown. He is using a Samsung Galaxy S7, while others using the same phone do not have the issue.

I changed the account on his phone to sync only contacts from this specific account, hoping that it would fully sync, but that did not fix it either.

At this point I can't tell if it is an issue regarding the number his phone is showing or if his account is actually not syncing all contacts.

How can I make the show desktop menu stay at bottom of a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone?

Currently I have to push up at the bottom of the Samsung Galaxy S8 screen to make this menu appear. I would like for it to stay at the bottom of the phone screen at all times.

How can I prevent a Samsung Galaxy S8 from constantly prompting to join Wi-Fi networks?

If the phone finds a Wi-Fi network and has the password saved for that network I want it to join that network but otherwise if it finds a Wi-Fi network such as a Comcast Wi-Fi network that a Comcast subscriber can join I don't want it to prompt to join that network.

This Android phone also has the secure Wi-Fi app installed.

My parents are both on t-mobile and both have iPhone 5s.
Occasionally their voicemails come few hours late.  Text messages are even worse.  Once I reboot one of their phones and received a dozen of texts messages from two weeks ago.

Is that an issue with t-mobile network or something else?  This is in US.
Thanks.

What is the process to add the clock app icon to the main Samsung Galaxy S8 screen's list of icons?

Currently I have to search for the clock app and I would prefer for this icon to be located on the main Samsung Galaxy S8 screen so that I can easily access it.

I was cleaning up some mailboxes (disabling ActiveSync on mailboxes the employee isn't authorized to access email from their phone) and came across the setting to enable/disable OWA for Devices. At first, I mistook this as the setting for the PC browser-based OWA feature, then I noticed that as a separate option. So after some quick Googling, I see there are three ways for people to access their email from a Smartphone:

1. ActiveSync using the built-in mail app, such as an iPhone's Mail app
2. Using the Outlook app
3. Using the OWA app

So... I guess my questions are:

1. What's the difference?
2. I know the built-in mail app uses ActiveSync, and the OWA app will use OWA for Devices. Which does the Outlook app use?
3. Does it matter which method employees use, or is it just a personal preference?

I've always used the built-in mail app when setting up my own and everyone's Smartphones. I like the ability to have one app check work email, personal email, gmail, etc. Since I have not set up the OWA app on any devices, I'm wondering if I should just disable that on everyone's mailbox.

I have added a home location to Google Maps on my Galaxy S6 phone, but am not able to add a work location.

On the screen where you set these addresses (Your places, labelled), my home address is there, and there is a spot for my work address, but when I tap "set work address". the box flashes to acknowledge the tap, but nothing happens.
In researching the problem, I found some mention that "Web & App Activity" must be on for setting your work address. So I went to the settings, and there is a line that say it is off, but no indicator of how to change it.

Every search I do is filled with discussion about not being able to set a work address because Google Maps won't accept a name of a place. My problem is different since I don't have the opportunity to add anything.

I have an Exchange Server 2010 that is currently running activesync and 3 phones are syncing with it.  The server name and the SSL certificate all references the firms old domain name.  I set this up 4 years ago with the assistance of paid for technical support and have forgotten most of what we had to do.  I have googled articles about it but have not found anything that goes into details.  Does anyone have a link to a good set of instructions for modifying or setting it up?

Hi, It's been quite a while since I connected my phone to my computer so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but can't imagine what it might be.  I connected the phone to one usb port and got no action on the phone or the computer. I switched over to another usb port and no action.  I then switched cables and tried both usb ports and no action.  Finally, I rebooted my computer and again no action.

I was expecting to see something show up under This PC or in the Device Manager but I see nothing.  A couple of times I heard a faint sound from the phone, like it connected to something but that was it.

Is it possible that I have to change my settings either on the phone or the computer?
Thanks in advance.

I was just reading Andrew Leniart's entertaining tale of dealing with a client's network connection issue. (Go check it out... I'll wait...)

Ok, cool, now that you've read it, I'm sure it's something many of you have encountered—user says that they restarted something, but clearly they didn't. Made me think that in the current era where smartphones with cameras are so ubiquitous, a way to verify that the device in question actually had power would be to have the client take a photo of it and send that to you. Then you could know if A.) they were looking at the right device and B.) the power lights were really on.

Think it'd work? You ever try anything like that? Oh, and if you've got a similar SysAdmin tale, be sure to go comment on that same post!

Typing on mobile: some thoughts

I was thinking the other day about smartphones and how I often don't like to type on them. I'm just so used to typing on full-size keyboards, that typing on mobile is like swimming in molasses. And it's really a shame, because in so many other ways, my iPhone is incredibly convenient.

But then, I thought about how speech to text these days is pretty decent, and perhaps the best approach would be to just use Siri for dictation instead of trying to type. I've held off on such things, because I'm old enough (and had enough bad experiences with flaky computer dictation long ago) that psychologically, it feels really weird to talk to a computer.

But in this case, my computer is a phone.

And that means: I feel weird talking to a phone.

Which is kind of weird, don't you think?

What about you? Do you type on your smartphone a lot? Or do you use Siri/Cortana/Google for dictation? Does talking to your phone feel weird or is it totally normal for you?

Stacy: I'm curious... Why do you hate talk to text?
Not speaking for Stacy, but I too get frustrated with 'Siri' sometimes, especially so if I'm driving and try to initiate a hands free call to some of my contacts. I tend to drive with my windows fully down almost all year round so I guess the ambient noise probably doesn't help, but it can be incredibly frustrating when two out of three calls tend to work perfectly!

A typical example goes something like this..
1. Hey Siri, call Tom Smith, office..  "Calling, Tom Smith.. office"   Tick! - Successful call
2. Hey Siri, call Bob Jones, mobile.. "Calling Bob Jones.. mobile"  Tick! - Successful call
3. Hey Siri, call Jennifer Clayton, office..  "Calling John Mechanic, office.."  Huh?!?!

Might take two or three attempts before she finally gets it right and I've had to explain myself a few times when not paying much attention to Siri's answers (which most times I'm not) and the call goes through to someone I had no intention of calling.

One amusing time she wrongly called my dental surgery and I ended up making an appointment for a routine checkup during the call. Turned out I needed a filling so that call ended up costing me about $150.00!! lol..

I'm sure others must have also experienced this phenomenon as well? :)

One reason of not liking talk to text if you ever been on the end of the message that has not been read over before sending is really confusing and can cause some problems.

Second reason just listening to someone use talk to text is simply annoying to me. I don't want to hear the conversation you are having.

This is just my opinion.
