The term "Backup" means the methods and processes involved to copy computer data (system data as well as application data) to media other than the ones where the data originally live (disk, tape, optical, cloud). "Restore" in turn means the methods and processes involved in data recovery, i. e., bringing back copied computer data to their original location. Backup/Restore primarily serves as a means of protection against data loss, be it due to disaster, corruption or sabotage. Dear experts, I'm using Veeam 9.5 to backup exchange 2016 server. It said that the log was truncated but when I checked on Mail server, they were not. Vssadmin list writers said that the Exchange writer is on Retryable state. Can you kindly suggest?

Many thanks

I have a Windows VM (wmware) which had a corrupted os. I tried to unjoin the vm from the domain and I couldnt join it again.

I do have commvault and the VM is registered has a physical host
commvault

I am trying to restore it  with a good backup, but it seems that because commvault can't ping the hostname of the server (server was removed from domain) , I am not able to do a restore. What can I do? Is it possible to replace the hostname of the server by its IP temporarly? If yes how?

Our Windows Server 2012 STD R2 was hacked and randomware installed. We lost everything. Luckily we have it all backup to tape.
The problem is we were running Backup Exec 2014. I have now reinstalled the server with tried both the Trial versions of BE 2014.1 and and  BE 20.6 as we lost our software and license info on that server. The tape inventory and catalog ran successfully.  It shows the tapes with the data on them and the servers that the data was backed up from.The catalog how ever show not data sets to restore.
We have tried a few different evening backup tapes and they all do the same. I have tried a number of different solutions I found on the net but nothing seems to work.
See images below.

How can we restore the data from the tapes?
Is there another Backup program we can try that will read the tapes.

I used Acronis Clone Disk utility to clone a disk, but the cloned disk is not bootable.

In your environments do you have any VM's that you do not backup as a matter of course? Our admins have sent through 'what we currently backup' in Veeam but a quick cross match to a list of all servers in the domain show some servers are not being backed up at all (which may be purposeful - hopefully!). I was just interested if this is common and examples of VM's where you don't need to backup the configuration/data?

Also in your experience - how easy would it be for an admin to miss something critical in terms of VM/virtual HD in backup selections? Realistic or very rare?

What kinds of security features are typically available with modern NAS storage devices, e.g. what are some of the more common controls to make your NAS device and the data held on it as secure as possible. Obviously is a different beast to say a VM Windows Server but there must be some consistency in terms of logical security controls to put in place regardless of make/model.

I am doing some research on the CIS top 20 controls and trying to decipher what exactly this is suggesting:
"Ensure that all backups have at least one backup destination that is not continuously addressable through operating system calls."

1) In terms of say Veeam backups what is it recommending in terms of backup destinations? What would constitute "not continuously addressable through operating system calls", i.e. if you write your backups to a NAS storage device, and those are replicated to another storage device 20 miles away, how can you determine whether that meets the criteria of something that is "not continuously addressable through operating system calls"?

2) From a basic management level perspective, what exactly is "Ensuring that all backups have at least one backup destination that is not continuously addressable through operating system calls" protecting you from/why is it so necessary?

1) With Veeam is it common for an organisation to create a backup per VM, or could you technically bundle VM's into the same job? I am just interested in the logic behind one backup job per VM and if this is typically a usual strategy and if so why would that be?

2) Is there granular access controls to the veeam backup and replication console, and if so where specifically can you get a list of users/roles? Are these defined with the veeam console itself or integrated with the server on which the console is installed upon? E.g. windows/AD accounts?

3) Is the configuration database behind veeam backup & replication typically Microsoft's SQL Server or by default another platform?
0
1) Does a veeam backup job typically constitute a 'Complete System Backups' – or is it highly configurable what the job will or will not include? E.g. could you restore the entire server (OS, App, configuration, data in a single restore operation), or does that require multiple steps?

2) Is there some form of screenshot on the veeam job properties which shows what specifically the job is backing up? I am a bit blind to the management side of Veeam Backup & Replication but need some supporting evidence from the admins for an audit.

3) Do you still do test restores of veeam backups, and what kinds of issues have you found that meant the veeam backups did not restore, or are they pretty 'faultless'? Not sure if the testing is quite an aged concept or still valid?
0
are there any specific veeam security best practices in which to review our compliance against? Obviously access to backups of sensitive systems is as dangerous as access to the live copies of the data so we need to verify we have done as much as physically possible in veeam and the storage as possible to keep the backups secure.

Out of interest if you got access to the backup files but did not have a copy of the veeam backup/restore application, would they be of much use to an attacker?

I am looking into some type of software that will help me accomplish the following:
1. We are moving all of our shared folders off an old server and uploading it to a QNAP TS-332X
2. I had setup this about 10 days ago and was going to have my clients start to use the new network storage folders, however I have found out that many employees are still using the old server share.  (I ran into an issue because 2 days after migrating all data I had to have emergency surgery, so I was not able to monitor the employees

So here is my issue - I have moved about 725GB of Data and 75% of the staff is using the new system...is there an easy way to view the files that have been changed in the past week or so on the old server, so I don't get stuck moving all the data again.

Hope this makes sense. - Thank you

There are plenty of items on the internet about how to set versioning for my OneDrive users, however, the settings for this are no longer available to my users.  I did see that Microsoft made a change to that policy... and is no longer available for users.  What are my options to set versioning parameters? Instead of 250 versions default i'd like to make that number much lower... corporately if i can... to say 10 last versions.

imported an excel file (csv) into a database. IS there any way to cancel the data import. Someone accidentally imported a batch file into a mysql database. They imported client ids and choose the wrong client on the drop down when importing. The tables are modified as well. I am not familar with the setup of the tables as this is not my area. Would I have to go into the backups and take earlier copy ? In addition, the database was updated throughout the day so a backup would override updates. . I can view the front end of mysql how can I view the backend and get to the workbench if I need to query the database for these records? Thanks in advance Any ideas on how to resolve this erroneous excel import?

I have a 3.0TB WD hard drive.   When I connect it to my computer, it appears to have only 745GB.

What is the best Windows 10 backup software which can connect to network drives, and back up data from one network drive to another?

Looking for a backup solution for multiple servers at multiple clients. We have a 40tb server with ftp at our office as the hosting server. Need to be able to do incremental backups, restore via web would be nice, the clients need to be able to access a web interface and see their backups, logs etc. Email notifications are essential. We tried duplicati but it crashes on most clients (files in use maybe). Trying URBackup but its slow. Hyper-V support is a plus as well as MS SQL backups. Free or Paid is fine.

var request = new HttpRequestMessage(HttpMethod.Post, "/token"){ Content = content };
                var responseToken = httpClientToken.SendAsync(request).Result;
                var resultToken = responseToken.Content.ReadAsStringAsync().Result;
                var jsonResult = JObject.Parse(resultToken);

                var httpClientCreateSurvey = new HttpClient();
                httpClientCreateSurvey.BaseAddress = new Uri("https://clear.pandolink.com");
                httpClientCreateSurvey.DefaultRequestHeaders.Accept.Add(
                    new MediaTypeWithQualityHeaderValue("application/json"));
                httpClientCreateSurvey.DefaultRequestHeaders.Authorization =
                    new AuthenticationHeaderValue("Bearer", jsonResult["access_token"].ToString());
                var responsePando = httpClientCreateSurvey.PostAsync("/api/extension/survey-account",
                    new StringContent(surveyJson, Encoding.UTF8, "text/json")).Result;
                var result = responsePando.Content.ReadAsStringAsync().Result;
                jsonResult = JObject.Parse(result);
                var pandoAccountId = jsonResult["AccountId"];
                return pandoAccountId.ToString() == "0" ? "" : pandoAccountId.ToString();

What would be the RestSharp equivalent?

I am struggling with what would be the RestSharp equivalent of ReadAsStringAsync( ).   I am glossing over that when serializing the response.Content but I am not getting away with it.

Particularly, I am struggling with the extraction of the value of "AccountId" from the jsonResult var:

 var pandoAccountId = jsonResult["AccountId"];
                return pandoAccountId.ToString() == "0" ? "" : pandoAccountId.ToString();

Here is my attempt so far:

I am new with SQL Server.

A while ago I installed SQL Server 2016 in Windows 2012 R2.   I set up the maintenance plans to do daily backups of the database and transaction logs.

Those maintenance plans worked just fine.

I recently decided I wanted to a text file of the backups to get created.   so I modified each maintenance plan to send a report (.txt) to the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log" folder.

I did this by modifying the maintenance plan and clicking the icon for Reporting and Logging.  Then selecting the checkbox for "Generate a Text file report", select Create a new file, then specified the path above.

Each time the maintenance plan runs, I see an error in the history:

Access to the path 'C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\\MSSQL\\Log\\Backup DBs_Subplan_1_20200207170004.txt' is denied.

I tried changing the path to the same one the backups go to but still got the same error.

Very perplexed.

Why would it be able to write all other logs to the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log" folder but not the backup reports?

We have a Synology NAS and would like to do a daily cloud backup.

I am looking for a suggestion as to the overall best cloud server.

We do our local backups using Hyper Backup and it seems to work OK.

I have tried using Hyper Backup to AWS cloud. For me, not a good solution.

We have about 2000 gigs of data with about 400 megs getting modified daily.

This whole external cloud backup is new to me.

We are planning to migrate (not upgrade) the Account and Contact data from a CRM 4.0 version to D365 CE using a tool like Scribe Insight.  A new D365 environment will be established and a mapping template created to determine which CRM fields will be mapped to which D365 fields.  The jscript will be added after the data is migrated and then tested.

We are looking to avoid the stepped  upgrade process from CRM 4 to CRM 2011 to CRM 2013 to CRM 2015 to CRM 2016 to Dynamics 365 CE.  We are planning to use a simple 1 to 1 mapping. using the SQL connector for the CRM 4.0 source and the Scribe D365 CE Adapter for inserting (or upserting) records.

Please advise of anything we should be aware of and any possible problems that can occur.

Does anyone have something that will allow the below step #4 ?

 1. currently a library has 20 Window 10 Pro PCs
 2. every night a software like one of the below software packages are run to REFRESH the PC back to the original IMAGE
         ** https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/customize/enterprise/unified-write-filter
         ** https://horizondatasys.com/reboot-restore-rx-pro/
         ** https://centuriontech.com/enterprise/
 3. about four times a year I manually update each of the 20 Window 10 Pro PCs with a new version
     of special locally installed LIBRARY software / etc that is not already on WSUS, Ninite, etc
 4. instead of doing the above #3 I would like to just update ONE PC,
     having the image easily CLONED to the other PCs
         ** I am willing to have everything on a HyperV VM on each PC if needed

Hi,

A module of our software system is to allow users to upload files to our on-premise file server which runs Windows 10 Pro.

We need to replicate every file uploaded to secondary storage medium to restore them in case a failure in main storage medium.

Please, I need your help in creating, configuring such disaster recovery plan.

Thanks,

Hi Experts.

I have a custom template that contains hundreds of building block entries. Unfortunately, the file has corrupted and, whilst I have backups, they seem to exhibit the problem too. Is there any way to extract the building blocks? I was hoping that they might be accessible as one of the 'parts'.

Many thanks for any help.

Dear Experts,

I would like to speed-up the process of upgrading my Workstations from Win 7 to Win 10.
For this reason I have purchased Acronis True Image 2020 in order to clone a pre-configured SSD drive (GPT, Basic).

All Workstations are hardware identical (motherboard, ram, cpu, ssd model and size, even the case is the same).

The cloning result seems successful but I am facing the below issue:

I use Computer A in order to clone the Win 10 and turned-off Computer A.
On Computer B, I installed the first cloned SSD and powered-on the Computer.
Computer B was successfully booted to Win 10 but I noticed that after powering on Computer B, Computer A was also powered-on automatically.
(this has happened more than once, so it is not a random case)

Of course Computer A and Computer B are under the same Network and imagine what will happen if the rest cloned computers have such behavior.
Finally, if I remove the Network cable from Computer A, it will not boot-up once Computer B is powered-on.

Awaiting your comments,

Best Regards,
Mamelas
