Does a non domain controller need to have the system state backed up?

Anyone have experience with Phobos ransomware?  According to the time stamps Phobos took control of a client PC last night around 8:15PM and finished encrypting the entire system and backups by 8:46PM.  The backups are 58GB each x7 copies (The drives alternate daily)  Restored from the other drive without issue, but wondering if I could decrypt the files that are lost from yesterday?  I have tried the Dharma decryption tool so far.

Would like to backup using StorageCraft software to a Western Digital NAS device. Goal is redundancy by backing the data up to a NAS device at another office location. I believe this is an option has anyone done it and how reliable was it. I know StorageCraft is reliable I'm more concerned with their services backing up to a NAS device not in their cloud and the reliability in this part of it. NAS will likely be a Western Digital of some sort unless EE'rs feel there's a better option.

I'm using ROBOCOPY for backing up files across our network from 1USB external hard drive connected to a PC to another USB external hard drive connected to a different PC.
On the source USB external hard drive there are approximately 30 Folders with each holding 30 Subfolders.  Within the 30 subfolders there are hundreds and hundreds of files - mostly Word docs and .pdf files.
The PC that will be "receiving" the Folders/Files from the Source PC is where I'm running Robocopy.
My initial command was:
ROBOCOPY \\SOURCEPC\SHAREDEXTHDD /S /R:1 /W:1 D:
with D: being the external hard drive plugged into the PC receiving the Folders/Files from the Source PC.
This command gave me an exact copy of the USB external hard drive connected to the Source PC.  This process copied over approximately 180 gigs in about 6 hours.
This is an office that will Add or Edit Folders/Files on the Source PC's USB external hard drive daily.
However, I would now like some assistance with a command that will copy ONLY the added or edited Folders/Files on the Source PC's external USB hard drive since the last backup.  That is, at the end of every day, the external USB hard drive that is receiving Folders/Files from the Source PC's USB external hard drive should just "update" it's existing Folder/File structure.

There is a need to copy the contents of the desktop contents of MAC to a Synology Server.
All on the same internal network.
When using software such as SyncBack Pro, it produces various errors which prevent some but not all files to be copied.
Access is denied for some files, since they cannot be copied I believe due to permissions.
How can I copy the files without it's permissions,  using either SyncBack Pro or another software program which runs on a Windows computer to backup those desktop MAC files to a Synology share?
Thank you.

Hi guys,

Got a qnap storage device- nas
Suddenly it just got stuck with “system booting “ message. Cannot ping it through IP address so can’t access web interface
- tried pressing the reset button, stiill no luck. Shows same message “system booting”
- normally the Manual says, If reset buttton presses for 3 seconds, there will be beep sound. No sound either when I press reset button.

Any ways to make it start as normal ?? I removed all disks from the nas, so it does not damage any data.

I have a new customer with Dell T30 server.
- Unfortunately they purchased this without consultation
- The server only came with 1 1TB Sata drive
- 8GB of RAM
- Prior to us starting to work together my client decided they wanted raid10 redundancy
- They purchased 3 additional 1TB drives from Dell
- Enter me
- The server does not support any kind of onboard raid
- I contacted Dell and of course they do not make any raid controllers for the T30

Any one have any thoughts about either of these controllers as an add-on option?

Again it's aT30 so it'll be limited but trying to make some lemonade outta the lemons I've been handed :)
We have a Tandberg USB 3.0 RDX drive and media for backups

Some RAID cards I've been considering
LSI 9341-4i
Intel rs3wc080Intel

PS sure we can look at Battery backed , cache, onboard RAM, etc but this is just to get some basic redundancy beyond a single drive in their server.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, we lost power to our esx + san environment, and my backups have been failing on VEEAM. I went into vmware, and saw this message, however the disk is attached in the VM. How do i fix this?

My computer started to give me blue screens for the first time yesterday, 3 times actually.  Today, same thing, I was able to get into windows, but it crashed 2 or 3 times, so I did a full restore from my backups about 4 hours ago, and so far so good, it has not crashed yet, BUT, my problem now is, besides my OS drive (SSD), I had 2 more drives in my PC, another 2.5" SSD and a 6TB drive, both already formatted.
The bios sees both drives, but when I boot to windows, none show up.
I checked the device manager, nothing there, I checked disk management, they are not there.  I clicked on scan for new hardware in device manager, nothing shows up.
I found online to run the windows memory diagnostic tool, did that, restarted, and still didn't' show up.   I'm a bit puzzled.

Any other thoughts why the drives show up in bios, but not in windows, running the latest version of windows 10.

SQL Server Maintenance

I have a SQL Server that houses a small db for about 20 users. I am by no means a DBA. I am currently using Datto to do image level backups every hour. The server has 2 Drives that are mirror running server 2008 and SQL 2008 and 8 GB of Ram. I would like to know what other tasks i should be doing to make sure the DB is healthy. Also i would like to know if there is a way to monitor its performance to make sure its running at its best.

Last year we did a few things starting with: https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29064169/Introducing-Windows-Server.html
Next, one of the Experts engaged in a planning task for us that was tailored to our particular situation; the result was an outline of an approach that makes sense to *me* and I'll be revisiting that soon.
Next, I set up a test lab with Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V VMs.  Not that I *plan* to have two servers per site but that I *anticipate* the possibility.
That's going to be revved up now and I'll probably configure a 2-subnet arrangement with a DC out of the 2 VMs on each.  That will do a pretty good job of emulating the real environment.
(I'm a rather great believer in partitioning machine roles and in keeping things simple to understand as much as is possible).

Some had asked what we are trying to accomplish:
- We aren't trying to implement file serving up front because we already have a pretty good system set up for that and it's not the focus.  BUT, I'm willing to consider it.  And that's the purpose of THIS question.
- We need to provide User and Access controls - that's the focus.  And, I'm hoping to grease the skids for things like SIEM that we now do sans-server.  Keeping individual machines "connected" either passively or with agents still proves to be challenging.  There are always a handful of machines that don't respond - even after ALL the machines have been made responsive.  I suspect Windows updates more than anything has …

I have a customer who wants "online backup".  I understand that this topic is huge - I need help narrowing down the options so I can give her two or three choices that make sense.
Question:  Apart from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, what is there to say in simple, layman's-terms language, about options for online backup of data files?
In a minute I'll post a related question about file synchronization.  Maybe it should be the same question.

Hi,

we use veeam for our backup solution in the datacenter. We backup our Hyper-v hosts to a veeam backup and replication server. This server is located in the same datacenter. After this backup we use cloud connect to send the data to another location.

Last week someone told me that the cloud connect solution is not so good as if the original backup i take is corrupt then the cloud connect copy is also corrupt.

He told me that we need to setup a second backup and replication server and then take a second backup with that server.

when i told veeam about this they told me to use the sure backup option. we have the enterprise license and this is included they told.

what are your ideas over this? What to do to make sure we take correct backups.

I installed Paragon and tried to do a restore.   It was not able to complete the restore because some files were in use.   I have no idea how to get a program that works reliably.   I am not a computer expert.   I have tried Acronis, Shadow Protect and Paragon.   All seemed to complete the backup, but none has completed the restore.   Is there no program that does this without my having to understand computers?   I am quite prepared to pay for a program that works!   Please help.   Thank you.

About a month ago my scheduled batch backup using xcopy began to fail.  I posted a question about the issue on EE and eventually scrapped the xcopy  with a new backup using Robocopy

Old xcopy Backup
xcopy "I:\My Documents\*.*" "K:\Mike\" /s /y /f

Robocopy backup
set LogFile=I:\My Documents\copylog.txt
RoboCopy "I:\My Documents" "K:\RoboCopy" /E /TEE /LOG+:"RoboCopyLog.txt"

The xcopy retained files on the destination that had been removed from the source and I set up the new Robcopy to do the same.

Now the xcopy backup contains files that aren’t in the new Robocopy backup.  These would be files that had been removed from the source drive over time.

The source directory for both backups is I:\My Documents.  There are many subdirectories under this main directory.
I would like to set up a onetime Robocopy that will copy from K:\Mike to K:\Robocopy.  However, the only files (and possibly directories I want to copy are the ones that don’t exist in K:\Robocopy.

What parameters do I use on the onetime RoboCopy to accomplish this?
RoboCopy "K:\Mike" "K:\RoboCopy"  /?????

I tried to use Acronis Universal Restore to restore a backup to  a different computer.   I keep getting the request to provide the following file:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C26&SUBSYS_04EE1028&REV_05 for Windows 7

I have the original Dell device drivers and utilities resource media, but it does not appear to be there.    Restore does not proceed without this file.   Where do I find it?

Hi
I do have a HP stream11 pro G4EE and I have installed our volume license copy of windows 10 on the laptop.
I would like to take and image of the laptop and push the same image to other HP stream11 pro G4EE laptops. I have taken the image of the laptop and now I want to create a bootable recovery media builder using a USB stick.
I installed “Paragon backup and recovery 16 free” on the laptop. When I click Home - Recovery Media Builder- Welcome to recovery media builder wizard-  and it gives 2 options
1)      advanced mode
2)      Use ADK/ WAIK
I choose the second option and – click next and recovery media format I choose USB flash drive
It took the default location of the WAIK.
C:\Program Files(x86)Windows Kits\10\   and  click next it says WAIK/ADK path does not seem to be valid. Please specify a valid WAIK/ADK path.
WAIK for this particular windows 10 build has been already installed on the laptop and not sure why it saying “WAIK/ADK path does not seem to be valid”
Please help what could be the problem and suggest if these is any other way of taking and image and install to other similar laptops.

Thanks in advance

We have done this over the years with a variety of different software but wanted to get some feedback from you experts.

What is the best commercial and/or open source software (that is user friendly) to clone a larger drive (example: 1TB SSD) to a smaller drive (example: 480GB SSD)?

(If it matters they are Windows OS drives.)

I was planning to create windows pe boot media and add windows os, ubuntu, android and acronis iso for installation from usb.
