The term "Backup" means the methods and processes involved to copy computer data (system data as well as application data) to media other than the ones where the data originally live (disk, tape, optical, cloud). "Restore" in turn means the methods and processes involved in data recovery, i. e., bringing back copied computer data to their original location. Backup/Restore primarily serves as a means of protection against data loss, be it due to disaster, corruption or sabotage. It can also be used for recovering data from an earlier point in time and even for cloning machines or applications. I just created a backup to acronis true image.

The program created three TIB files.

_v1 - (2g)
_v2- (4g)
_v3- (4g)

Any ideas why the program created 3 files?

I have sysprepped my Win 10 install (generalize, audit, shutdown)

Now the computer is shutdown.  Are my next steps the following:

1) boot to Acronis Win 10 PE bootable recovery media (CD)
2) clone image to USB drive?

Need better solution for backing up data to a network drive.  Powershell or batch script is ok, just the logging is less than desired.  Needs to be able to run on Windows server OS and handle large amounts of data (2 TB - 8 TB).

FreeFileSync and SyncToy were great applications that worked well for this simple purpose.  Make a folder pair and configure the kind of sync between the folders.  I am fine doing in a script, just do enjoy the ease of use there.

Hello,

I need help regarding VEEAM Backup. I have a File-to-Tape Backup job that does not function properly. Nearly everytime it comes to the following error during backup:

Error message:
The handle is invalid
-tr:Error code: 0x00000006
Error    --tr:Failed to deserialize file info

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Please help!

Thank you in advance,
Bernhard

Is there a current equivalent to the old Novell Salvage? Salvage allowed a file to be overwritten, upon which the original file was put somewhere on the disk and be recoverable through the Salvage utility. If you saved edits to a file 5 times, you'd see a history of prior 4 edited copies and could choose which one you wanted to recover. Note that these copies are the file's state just before saving changes, not its state at a point in time, like with Snapshots.

Snapshots don't do the same thing because you could edit a file multiple times before the next snapshot.
Microsoft's Previous Versions doesn't do this either.
Shadow Copies seem to be like Previous Versions and Snapshots.

I'm running in a Windows AD domain and have our data on both server NFS and NetApp SAN.

Can someone help me with this?

I am using macrium reflect on two laptops. On my windows 7 laptop, I go to an image, right-click, choose explore, and it creates a new drive with all my folders in it.

On the windows 10 laptop (someone just replaced the hard drive and insisted he copied everything over, but we're missing a bunch of stuff), it gets to the "creating a drive" portion, finishes, but the drive never shows up.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hi Team,

I'm working on a project that involves utilizing VEEAM Agent to create bare metal backups and migrate them over to a new cloud data center. Everything so far has gone exceptional but as expected I've ran into an issue trying to migrate my secondary DC. After a few DNS issues we decided it was best to brig the old local DC VM back online. Things started working again but now the DCs are in a slightly different state.

I originally noticed a warning on my primary DC - "this server is the owner of FSMO but does not consider it valid". Also numerous errors on the primary about kerberos syncing to the secondary and that the secondary was not available / not the right name; etc. All of these issues, after Googling, pointed toward numerous different causes, so as dubious as I was I just decided to reboot both server; primary first, then secondary.

The strange part is now, replication works, I don't have any errors, and best practice analyzer isn't coughing anything up - but the secondary DC allows me to edit and modify DNS and ADUC records whereas before they were locked down, perhaps due to the replication rules. The records could only be edited from the primary DC.

I'm afraid this odd behavior is the result of a larger issues that I I'm unable to pin down. Should I be concerned? Everything seems to be working; new records replicate in both directions and SOA is incremented correctly.

Any advice or things to look for is appreciated. Also tips on migrating …

Hi
We have NetApp FAS2220 SAN and 3xFujitsu PRIMERGY ESX host servers and we are using VMware Vcenter appliance.
On the NetApp filer the current ONTAP version is 8.1.2 - 7 Mode.

I would like to upgrade the filer from ONTAP version is 8.1.2 to ONTAP  version to 8.2.5. Please post me any tutorials or videos to do this upgrade. I have access to NetApp OnCommand Systems manager (version 3.0) and will I be able to do the upgrade from the GUI. Or do I need to do through the command line logging into the filer through putty session.

I have downloaded the upgrade file  for Ontap version 8.2.5 (825P1_q_image.tgz)

Any help much appreciated  and thanks in advance.

Backup question: I have a Dell 5810 Workstation:
Drive C:  Toshiba SSD 1 TB
Drive D: Samsung SSD 1 TB
Drive R: Raided 1 4 TB brand new Western Digital Black drives

I am sure that my Drive C: is failing. I have only ever backed up my data in a folder by folder method. I have current backups utilizing this method. However I wish to backup the entire C: drive just in case. Since I have 4TB free in the raid configuration is my best option to simply use Windows 10's backup software to copy everything on c: to the 4TB raid? When I replace this computer I "probably" have everything I need on drives external to the computer, but things can be forgotten and Ii want to have the best backup while the C: drive is still readable and writable. The new computer I choose will have the ability to install the two raided drives to retrieve files I might have forgotten about. So, is backup a reasonable choice? Note: I do not wish to troubleshoot this computer any further. I have had TWO motherboards replaced in the last week and am unwilling to go any further to diagnose it. I only want to oreserve my data and then never turn it on again.

I need a great WebHost for a site that will be using PHP and MySQL for a small project.  The site will be having users sign in, submit and edit forms.  They want to keep the history online, with frequent backups and good security.

What a good company for professional hosting?

Thanks.

Hey all,

I have just taken over a site and one of the critical servers (VM1) is running out of disk space on the C:Drive. Host is running Hyper-V with plenty of space for allocating extra stroage to VM1. The weird thing is that when I look the Disk management within the VM, it shows that there is space that hasn't been allocated. It also has a replica of free unallocated space on the D:Drive which is very odd.

I would ideally  like to just expand the C:Drive - is this safe to do so knowing I have good backups also?

We are after some software to backup Office365 Exchange, hoping someone would have some suggestions.

We want the ability to backup our Office365 Exchange to an offsite remote server in a datacentre - we already pay to have our backup server in a datacentre, so we are not looking to pay for monthly "cloud" backups with storage fee's, when we already have the infrasturcture to do this ourselves.

We are hoping for the following features:

- Fixed price perpetual license
- Ability to backup normal mailboxes and shared mailboxes
- Ability to browse backup and restore emails from within app (Not essential, but would be nice)

If anyone knows something similar or can recommend one that they use?

Can anyone comment on interface changes from Backup Exec version 15 to newer versions (16 or 20)?  I believe version 15 was a substantial (and awful!) change from the historical interface and I'd like to know if they are doing that again in the newer versions.

I am creating a Windows 10 image to deploy.   Before I do so, I want to run the Windows 10 decrapifier (available on Spiceworks).

Is the following the correct order of events to image the laptop:

1) login as a local admin, run the decrapifier
2) run Sys Prep
3) create TIB file using Acronis boot CD, and USB stick to store image on.

Hello, I have Backup Exec 2012 Version 14 Rev 1798
I got the following error:
I have the following error: The disk is out of space. As retention periods expire for backup data on the disk device, Backup Exec re-uses the disk space.

To provide more disk space, you can create additional disk storage devices on other drive letters. You can also delete the backup sets disk that are no longer needed from this disk storage device.

Yes the F:\ drive is full...

And this is Disk storage 0003

I am wondering how do i find the backup sets that are targeting the F Drive so i can delete them ?

I am deleting some backup sets...but the drive is not decreasing....

See attachments.

Thanks for your help

Hi Guys,

We have 2 Server 2016 Hyper-V hosts in our environment, when we try to checkpoint the VM's on the hosts we get the error "The operation cannot be performed while the object is in use" and the following from the logs. "SERVER**' background disk merge failed to complete: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x80070020). (Virtual machine ID E33D1EB8-D888-4CE8-9100-891EA98C566C)

The checkpoints work when the host is restarted but it just fails again, obviouslt this is also affecting the backups.

Anyone else come accross this?

Thanks

Application API's not responding while SQL Server backup is running.

we are using storagecraft - a tool to back up the DB in every 15 minutes in NAS.

last LSN: XXXXXXXXX, number of dump devices: 1,
                                       device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE: {'{39}3'}).
his is an informational message only. No user action is required.

It's taking 8 database backups including master, model & msdb

We are thinking this may be one of the reasons for this issue. Is it right? Anyone facing this issue? How to correct it?

I have an external backup disk usb2.0 with data backup using Windows Server Backup.
I need to recover all the data (6TB), takes a lot of time.
Can someone help me to see if this two options would work:
Brake the case of the external disc, extract the backup disck, insert the disc as a sata disc and recover the information using Windows Server Backup (will the WSB will recognize the disk the same as the external usb).
Brake the case of the external disc, extract the backup disc, place it in a usb3 case and recover the information using Windows Server Backup (will the WSB will recognize the disk the same as the external usb).

Will this work?, or should I stay with the same external usb2.0 case?

Hi,

I have a question regarding the builtin windows group "backup operators". Do I have to add this group to the directories which I want to backup or does this account have the permission even if I do not set the proper ntfs permissions?

Thank you in advance!

I plan to start recording my gaming sessions. What would be a good internal HDD (or SSD, whatever) for that? I only have one drive slot left in my desktop computer. I imagine that write speeds and write durability would be the main criteria for that task. I don't plan on keeping the recorded sessions for very long so I don't think I need tons of space. This drive would be exclusively used for this purpose.
