The term "Backup" means the methods and processes involved to copy computer data (system data as well as application data) to media other than the ones where the data originally live (disk, tape, optical, cloud). "Restore" in turn means the methods and processes involved in data recovery, i. e., bringing back copied computer data to their original location. Backup/Restore primarily serves as a means of protection against data loss, be it due to disaster, corruption or sabotage. It can also be used for recovering data from an earlier point in time and even for cloning machines or applications. There is a wide variety of backup/restore software available, from expensive commercial products to free or open source tools.

hello we have a shared volume (RAID5) on our EVA4400, and it is presented as c:\ drive to one of our servers.
that drive is running out of space. i would like to allocatte 30GB extra for it.
i would go to the VDISK in the HP Command view and increase the space from 70GB to 100GB
and then i have to go to the windows server and extend the 70GB to the 100GB.
did i miss anything ?
will there be any down time? or any chance of data loss in the process ?

Hi guys, I'm looking for some help with creating a batch.

I want to run the file to backup a folder on the network to run in a continuous state so that it keeps running and when any changes
are made to a file or a new file is created it will automatically backup rather than having to run the batch file each time.

many thanks

I am looking for  the way to migrate them to EMC storage.
Is there any easy way to do using any tools?
I am thinking of doing one of these not sure whether it will do the job, I like your comments and suggestion.

Hi,

I have 25 ESXi 6.0 hosts with 2TB SATA/SCSI and 250GB SSD drives on each host. I have created a 20GB logical partition from 2TB disk which I have used for ESXi kernel installation. I am using storage from NetApp to host my VMs. Initially there was a plan to use VSAN but later it was dropped for some reasons or other. So now I have 1.8TB + 250GB(SSD) drives on each host sitting idle in the infrastructure of whom I plan to utilize for additional shared storage purpose with reducdancy. Please suggest me available free shared storage solutions with which I can make use of these unused storage lying on my hosts without reinstalling ESXi hosts as they host live VMs.

Regards,
Rohit Suseelan

I have a Dell PowerEge 2970 (Server 2008 R2 STD) in our second office, I use this server to backup too. I'm running out of space and would like to add more storage to it. Can someone recommend a DAS solution, I usually use MD PowerVaults on my servers and they work well for me. But for this server since it's just backup data I'd like to take the economical route. I need around 5-6TB SATA is fine
thanks

Hello,

When I connect my external USB 3 hard drive it makes a weir sound, at least 5 small signals and the it stops.

Is a Western Digital, power LED is working and operating system detects it in the admin manager as "WD Elements 10A8 USB Device", but no partition is shown

I try to initialize the HDD by the Disk Manager and it shows that there is and I/O error

Is anything I can try before sending the hard drive to a specialized laboratory to recover the data?

Thank you

I have a chain of StorageCraft backups that were broken, meaning when I go to mount an image file it asks for previous information. Does anyone know a way I can access a partial / incremental Storagecraft backup?

If you guys were shopping for a 3rd party managed backup vendor, would you go with a service that needed domain administrator access rights in order to complete the backups?  We have a vendor that was approved by a previous administrator and needs full access to everything.  I'm trying to get outside opinions on this setup.

Hello Experts, We have an IT software that we would like to have it reviewed by IT bloggers or professionals to give us a feedback but also so potential customers can gets their peace of mind and get more exposure.

We do not mind paying for their time (though looking for unbiased review).

It has to do with data replication\migration on windows servers.

Looking for answers preferably by someone who has gone through this route before, though all constructive comments are highly appreciated.

informed by san team, there is lun latency increased because..

Single Lun is mapped to multiple host and cluster ?

Need to understand will that actually impact the performance ?

if yes what is count for max host /cluster can be used to map single lun ?

any impact due to size of lun mapped to multiple hots?

best practice to look for lun latency if  caused due to vmware or san config ?

Are there any useful check-lists/metrics on which to assess a companies backup and disaster recovery plans? This is currently a VMware ESXi based infrastructure with SAN. What should be the key areas of focus? Despite it being a big topic I cant see much in terms of checklists to assess how well prepared your company is in terms of DR/backups.

Apart from backups, what else should be in included in the IT diaster recovery review?

Hello,

We have two DELL servers same model units (750), one with 2008 and one with 2003, looking to clone 2008 to 2003 box. We're looking for a one time clone with cross platform capabilities, if possibilities of MB differentiates . I've researched and some of the solutions are pricey. I have questions on Easeus, but would like to hear what others have tried. I prefer Acronis w/ universal restore yet the 1000.00 price tag I can't justify. We're unable to sysprep the 2008 box before cloning and have volume license for compliance. Any thoughts?

In my old Symantec BackupExec 2012 I could do "search by date range" so when users say “sometime in the last 90 days I deleted a quarterly financial statement, please find the last few versions of it” I could find it.

What CLOUD-BACKUP-VENDOR offers this same type of "search by date range" without having to open each backup, one-by-one, then do a search ?

At present, I use the following to backup the user profile on each workstation :
ROBOCOPY "C:\Users\johnleung\Desktop" D:\john\Desktop /MIR /Z /XA:H /W:5

I have been asked to begin copying to CD/DVD for archival purpose, on a weekly basis, new or modified files that were backed up using the Windows Backup utility, but I don't see a way to restore just those files. I am only able to restore all files for a specific restore point, but that does is going to require for me to archive everything (from the full restore) every week, which is going to add up in terms of CD/DVDs required for this since the total backup size is 80+ GB. I researched other backup software to see if maybe other systems can do this, but so far the ones for which I read documentations online did not show the capability to only restore the new or modified files from a specific period of time.

What would be the best approach for getting only the differential between the weekly backups? I already have googled and researched this issue, but I am not getting any good suggestions, solutions, or options. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Can the free version of Veeam (found at https://www.veeam.com/endpoint-backup-free.html) restore to dissimilar hardware?

We would like to know if a computer that we create a Veeam backup of has a hardware problem if we can then use the Veeam backup that we have created for that computer to restore to a completely different hardware manufacturer's computer. Or can we only restore a Veeam backup to the exact same computer where the Veeam backup was created?

I'm trying to implement the "Storage Spaces" with Win2012 R2 with my Dell server, which comes with Hardware RAID for the DAS.
Question to you, what should I do with the hardware RAID? Shall I set up the hardware RAID 0 (or what?) and then set up the Storage Spaces in the OS?
Please help.

I'm using BackupAssist to perform a backup of my SBS2011 server. I'm running a file level backup rather than a system recovery backup and I've included SQL in the selection. The backup is running under the administrator login (I'll change this later) and when I first ran this a week ago it backed up SBSMonitoring OK but now I get the following error.
Reading: (5) Access is denied (\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy74\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SBSMONITORING\MSSQL\DATA\SBSMonitoring.mdf)
I realise that BA is just a front end to Windows Backup so it's likely to be a Windows problem rather than BA but I can't see what is the cause.
