The term "Backup" means the methods and processes involved to copy computer data (system data as well as application data) to media other than the ones where the data originally live (disk, tape, optical, cloud). "Restore" in turn means the methods and processes involved in data recovery, i. e., bringing back copied computer data to their original location. Backup/Restore primarily serves as a means of protection against data loss, be it due to disaster, corruption or sabotage. It can also be used for recovering data from an earlier point in time and even for cloning machines or applications. There is a wide variety of backup/restore software available, from expensive commercial products to free or open source tools.

Dear experts, if I need to reformat or reinitialize a harddisk to replace a failed drive in my IBM DS3400 SAN, how do I go about doing it? I can't seem to find the option in the Storage Manager Client version 10. A recent failed drive was replaced with a re-conditioned spare but it goes into the bypass state and not rebuilding the array. I need to use the new drive. Thanks in advance.

my customer has a Windows server attached with EMC volumes. Recently I deployed a new Dell Compellent FC SAN storage and present a new Compellent volumes to that server as well.
That server has EMC PowerPath installed, hence I can't use Windows Native MPIO for my Compellent volumes. I know there is a way to configure the PowerPath not to managed non EMC volume, but from internet, I only found those command that apply to unix/Linux servers.

is there any guide I can refer for Windows Server?

Hello EE,

We currently backup to tape and we would like to migrate to backup to Disk so we are proposing to add a Data Domain onsite and to our DR location for offsite coverage.  We have 30TB of data.  Our corporate company is looking for pros/cons of us backing up/restoring onsite v.s. using their solution overseas.  The schedule is weekly full, daily incremental, monthly full and yearly full.  Here is the list I've started for why keep it local.  Can you help me add?

Local                                                     Overseas
Local expertise                                    will not require coordination of local and remote resource
RTO                                                        Longer restore times
                                                               Increased bandwidth
                                                               Longer backup times
WIth secondary offsite                       Data being overseas
can drive to destination
In DR situation if line was down wouldn't be able to recover data remotely

MAC OS VER : EL CAPITAN 10.11

Space is not an issue since my storage is a BUSINESS PLAN , But because of the huge number of files I am afraid that it will be time consuming, I doubt  that the file name length and the Folder depth restrictions may be an issue.
Any solution is welcomed since I also have a Windows server that I can load the back on but OneDrive is preferred.

Hi, i have created a folder on my Dropbox account called 'Online Storage'. I use this folder to store large file on my Dropbox account online only, and then i have Selective Sync turned off on this folder so that i can save space on my Macbook.

However... when i click into my Dropbox account / app / folder on my Macbook, the 'Online Storage' folder does not show because selective sync is turned off on that folder. Can anyone advise as to how i can access this folder on my Macbook, as i need download and upload files to this folder on a regular basis.

Just wondering if can be recommended to use the Dropbox Business Plan as a CDN for our videos instead using Amazon s3 as they charge by each "GB transfered"

We want to sell 100GB storage packs for every customers of us so they can be able to sream their videos on demmand

I see this possibility so easy/cheap to be true, so I prefer asking before star working with them

DropBox doesn't charge by GB transfered. This sounds weird to me as I guess they also works with Amazon for storing their own files :)

Hello,

I was looking at veritas volume manager, they have plex and subdisk concepts.  Why are they creating volume from Plex instead of subdisk?
What is the purpose of subdisk?

We use Veeam to back up data, we also use VeeamOne Reporter for reporting.
However I cannot find a command or a way to build a report that can tell me how much data  Veeam has backed up for a specific period of time.

Any help will be very much appreciated

Thanks

Hello Experts,

Need few clarifications in HyperV storage which is an SMB storage. I created a storage space with onboard disks of Win server 2012 R2 with file services installed on it. Its has 8x 1.2 TB drives, 4x 900 GB drives. I selected all these drives and created a storage pool which shows 12 TB as total storage. Now when I am creating a virtual disk in mirror mode it should give me a total of 6 TB approx but when I am creating it just tells I can create a vdisk with maximum size of 4.9 TB instead of 6 TB. When I tried to create second vdisk it shows up the remaining space which is 1.09 TB.

Is there any limitation on creating a virtual disk?

Thanks in advance

Cannot access all shadow copies even though there is enough space for the shadows on the drive.

Background:

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server being used for file storage.
The drive I have set the shadow copy on has 500gb of data on it.
The drive itself has 5TB of space so very little is being used.
I have set the drive shadow copy to use 500gb of space.
Its seems I can access the newest 5 of the shadow copies in my list of previous versions but there are lots of older entries in the list that I get an error message if I try to access the folders (see below)
shadow copy access errorAt first I though that I needed to increase the shadow copy size but as you can see from the screenshot below only 35gb has been used.
Please advise.

My firmware version is 6.4.2.  I have a USB drive connected that I need to make backups to from the RAID array.  Backups are failing and in troubleshooting I need to format the drive.  I can't find anywhere in the ReadyNAS OS to format this drive.  Thanks in advance.

I'm a little confused after readin the VDP FAQ online. It says you can expand the datastore for VDPA but not VDPA.

We are using VDPA so if I have 5 Unixed based VM's that are 1 TB each and all in the same location can I use one VDPA appliance to back then up or am I limited to the datastore that the VDP appliance sits on and no larger?

So if I can use a max of 3 TB LUNs for the VDPA appliance and I have a total of 4 TB in VM's to backup then would I need two VDPA appliances? Or is it possible to connect additional datastores as needed for more space to one appliance?

Is there a way to determin what size LUN I would need if I know I have a total of 4 TB of space to backup?

Hello EE,

We have several production workstations that are setup to run special machinery so we need to capture images periodically.
I am wondering if there is a software out there that could be setup to automate an image capture.  I am searching online, but
find EE helpful as many have used solutions they can recommend.

Thanks!

Hi Guys,
I have a vSAN in a vSphere cluster environment with 3 ESXi hosts.
Each host has a disk group configured with 1 SSD (750GB) and 5 HDD (3TB each).

I need to add more storage and I have physical bays available.

Now my first thought is to add 2 HDDs (3TB each) to each ESXi host and then add them to each host disk group.

Question1.
Is there a maximum number of HDDs per disk group? or can I keep just adding HDDs?

Question 2.
Is there a maximum storage size limit given the fact that I have only 1 SSD (750GB) per disk group?

Question 3.
Is the process as easy as properly turning off the ESXi host adding the new HDDs and when it turns on will it just add the new HDDs to the disk group that was created in that ESXi host?

Thanking you in advance,
Cargex

I'm piloting Azure Backup Server in our environment - as far as I can tell, this is essentially DPM 2012R2 with an Azure-provided license.  Have a few questions:

Is it possible to set the simultaneous # of Online Recovery Point streams?  I know you can throttle bandwidth during work/non-work hours, but I would like to reduce the # of simultaneous uploads to 2 (default appears to be 8).

Is the C: drive automatically included in a Bare Metal Recovery job?  I notice that most of those jobs are roughly the same size as C: which makes me wonder if I need to backup C: at all, although my initial research indicates you can't restore individual files from BMR jobs.

Is it possible to view, specifically, which files are backed up during a synchronization?  One of our servers is sync'ing 55GB every 15 minutes, and I find it hard to believe the change rate is that high.  If I could see what files are being repeatedly sync'd, I could contact the app vendor for more info.

Queries on vVolumes if can be used during upgrade we are planning from 5.5 to 6

current version of vmware is 5.5  and we are using netapp san in current infra
Further have quires..to understand more on it...
> Requirement from vmware and SAN side to get this vvol configured during migration from 5.5 to 6 ?
> will that need any downtime ?
>File format VMFS or something else would be used further on vvol n datastore we will create in 6 ?
>how vvol with directly interact with vms and what about size increase @VM or vvol level?
> No more dependency on datastore creation and limit of max 256 ? if we use vvol?

I noticed that my time settings are off on my HP P4500 G2 Lefthand storage for my VMWare running on HP esxi hosts. I see that NTP is disabled on my storage boxes. When I go to enable it I get a pop up asking for the IP address of the ntp server.  My esx hosts use us.pool.ntp.org. The ntp setting on the HP only lets me select one ntp server. When I enter the IP address of one of my hosts it fails synchronization.

We have about 500 dlt tapes which our company previously used for backups.  I also have the drive that was used, but nothing else.
I have an immediate need to try and find some files from a 3-4 of these tapes, but have not idea how to get started using this hardware.  How can I read / restore the data on these tapes?  What software do I need to do a simple restore?   Desperate! - Thanks.

I am looking for a backup for my virtual servers (in hyper-V)
With window server backup this can be done either from within the VM or from the host, [the target is a network device], which is more practical in case of a disaster to have it up on a different host?
I installed window server backup on the host but it does not show in the tools menu, any idea?
On a file level [custom, only selecting the data volume], window server backup does not specify how many copy’s it will keep [target local] any idea? I want to go back at least to a week for a copy.
Full or instrumental?
What does shadow copy stand for?
