The term "Backup" means the methods and processes involved to copy computer data (system data as well as application data) to media other than the ones where the data originally live (disk, tape, optical, cloud). "Restore" in turn means the methods and processes involved in data recovery, i. e., bringing back copied computer data to their original location. Backup/Restore primarily serves as a means of protection against data loss, be it due to disaster, corruption or sabotage. It can also be used for recovering data from an earlier point in time and even for cloning machines or applications. There is a wide variety of backup/restore software available, from expensive commercial products to free or open source tools.

What are the best practices in light of ransomware attacks. I've had a few local non rotating backups get bricked because of ransomware. I do have remote backup, but is everyone resorting to rotating backup drives?

does backup write new data to virtual machine during snapshot

We use Veritas Netbackup with Vmware Option. I would like to know during the backup and when the backup software sends an API request to Vmware to take a snapshot of the VM, whether the Backup software, in our case Netbackup, will write any new data to the target VM disk or it does not.

I have seen some VMs run out of space during snapshot, but I am not sure if it is caused by Backup software, never heard of it before.

Thank you

Dear all,

I'm really stuck for a backup solution for a client of mine. What I am trying to achieve without spending any more money is as follows:

Back up an Archive folder that is on the Synology and a full weekly backup of the server (stored in a share called Weekly Backup on the Synology) to a USB drive plugged in to the Synology which is then removed every Monday and swapped for the other USB Drive.

The set up is as follows:

1 x Dell Poweredge Tower Server running 1 x VM Server 2016 as a domain controller

1 x StorageCraft ShadowProtect SPX software installed on the VM, backing up to:

1 x Synology DS216 NAS Drive which has 1 of two 4TB USB Hard Drives plugged in to it on a weekly rotation.

The way I have it set up at the moment is for ShadowProtect to backup the server to the Synology daily but carry out a weekly backup each Friday night and store it in a different folder on the Synology.  I then use HyperBackup on the Synology to back up the Archive Share and the Weekly Backup Folder to the USB Drive every Saturday (I have 2 backups set up, one to each USB drive, 1 backup will always fail each week as the wrong hard drive is plugged in but that's the only way you can do it)

The issue I have is that the Weekly Backup folder contains backups that always have unique names, even though it only ever contains 1 weekly backup the differing names mean that they keep accumulating on the USB backup filling it up.

I only ever need 1 weekly backup stored …

Hi Guys, we are a small business we are trying to implement a file server using windows server 2016, we can't afford a h/w raid for now to have a proper NAS. so i'm researching the alternative. so for the data experts out there what file storage NAS can we use in a windows server 2016 AD environment. so far we are comparing unRaid, FreeNas, stablebit drivepool and windows native RAID.

This is using veritas netbackup 7.7.3 with IBM TS3580 tape library. Master, media server are all installed with SuSE Linux 11. There are 2 Windows Servers deployed to backing up VMware VMs. 6 LTO4 drives were deployed in the robot library. Recently, found that the drive 7 was show "no light". We get the hardware vendor to help. They power down the robot library, replace the drive with a working drive (they eval this drive on their office, and clarify is working fine). After that, they power on the robot library, wait for the initialization. However, to our shock, this drive has a "same" serial number as the existing drive shown front panel of the robot.

We do the full rescan, robot inventory, still we can't get this drive works. How to troubleshoot? How to get this problem resolved?

Thanks in advance.

Backup Exec on Small Biz Server 2008 (Hyper-V), with VSS problem and error V-79-40960-38521.
Cannot find the hotfix for Server 2008, only 2008 R2 and above.  The backup fails about 40% of the time because of this error on the virtual server.

Can anyone find the hotfix or provide more information on this problem?

I need to do test restores using our Commvault backup software. We backup several physical servers and since then are not VMs I need to to do file backups and restore the entire server to a large drive on a test server and i usually put then in a folder Servername-Restore. The restore process works fine but I eventually run out of space on the test server drive that I am putting these restores on. We are using a Windows 2012r2 Domain. When I got to delete the folder of the restore server I always get permissions issues and files and folder that will not delete. I am a domain admin and I take ownership of the folder and make sure inheritance is enabled but i still get permission problems and end up drilling down the C drive and D drive of the restored server and deleting one folder at a time. This is a lengthy process and last time I just reformatted the drive to make sure for other restores but it seems there should be a better way. I am missing something obvious? Is there a quick way for a domain admin to deleted a restored server all at once?

I am trying to backup data on 3 servers
1 server is a Windows 2008 r2 (this is a physical box)
2 of servers are 2012 r2 (each of these servers  are on a separate virtual host)

I am looking just to backup each of these servers on their VM Host
All three servers have SQL databases - One is a domain controller
I am talking about a total  of  one TB of data

We have a large MY Cloud Pro NAS Box that I would like to backup to locally and possibly send the data to the cloud- I am still unsure but  I would like to store the data locally  in this building but it also has to be stored somewhere else since  the building could  burn down
I do not have a big budget

Can someone give me some hints on what I can do

The place I work has another  branch.   Would it be a possibility to put  another NAS box at the branch and  instead of sending the data  to a cloud server send the data from the NAS that is local to the  one we would purchase at the branch

I really need some help

I am looking for  backup software ideas- Also, would it be better to store a copy of the backup in the cloud or do you think putting a NAS in the other branch  would be better?
How could I get the data to move between the NAS boxes?

Has anyone used Acronis Server Backup 12.5 (or any server backup) to a AWS S3 cloud storage? Does AWS accept FTP or SFTP connections to S3 Storage?
It seems their cloud storage is priced well. $276/yr for a TB. Any comments to cloud storage in general for backups?

We are deploying Windows 10 workstations using True Image.  I want to set browser default to IE, and PDF default to adobe.
The 2 methods I researched are below.  In your opinion, should I build the defaults into the image, or just use GPO?
Also,  if I choose to build the defaults into the image, will the OSD method work with Acronis True Image?  Or will I have to implement this a different way?

In preparation, I did the following copying:
I duplicated all the LR files onto a removable drive  (CRU RTX)
I took the drive with me to the second city

I set up a VPN between the two locations.
NYC has a fast FIOS connection:  greater than 300 Mbps both download and upload.  Sometimes Speedtest will show >600 for each

Second Method of sync:
"Retrospect" application - Server in NYC, Client in MA.
The Client works locally on the MA computer to catalog changes,
Server in NYC compares MA catalog of files to NYC local catalog
Retrospect copies new and changed files

I am looking to use a  MY Cloud Pro 4100 series NAS box  for backing up  Windows Server\ SQL Data locally and then send it to Amazon S3 cloud. The servers I am talking about are 3 Windows servers

2 of the 3 servers are VM-* the servers do  have SQL databases

I  would like to backup  the data locally on the NAS and then send it to Amazon
Has anyone done this?

What I originally wanted to do was install the backup software on the NAS and  have the data back to it and then to the Amazon s3 cloud

I currently have a 3par array that needs to be re-sync'd with a remote site (another 3par) The bandwidth is not enough to replicate the data in a timely manner.
HP's solution is to create a read-only snapshot and use a block level backup solution to do the backup of the source. Transport the data to the site, and restore
the backup at the remote site. Then have the 3par connect and sync using remote copy. I need to find a backup product that will give me a block level backup of the data
that I can place on a usb drive. All of the data is VMDKs. Both sites are running 3pars connected to ESXi hosts.

Hi,

I use backup exec 16 to backup my local network.

I have a site-to-site VPN to MS Azure

in Azure I have a VM running the Veritas Backup Exec CAS Server

in local network I have a VM running the Veritas Backup Exec MMS Server

both the CAS and MMS have a local deduplication disk attached to them.

the MMS runs all backup jobs

each backup job runs to the Dedup disk on the MMS (local network) then DUPLICATES to the Dedup disk on the CAS (off site network in Azure).

what I did not understand until now was the performance issues this set up would cause.

the MMS uses the SQL Database on the CAS as its management database.

all queries it makes therefore go over the WAN

after days if not weeks of calls to Veritas off-shore support (which Is painful beyond words) confirmed this is by design.

this article describes the issue: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100034399

a potential solution I have thought of is it replicate the SQL database of the CAS to a SQL database in my local network - and for my MMS to connect to this local database.

I am sure this will not be a supported solution

has anyone had any similar experience?

many thanks

jack

We have a server in a Data centre and we want to run incremental daily backups to this server over WAN.

The backups will mainly be file backups, exchange, SQL and possibly whole VM backups or Windows Image backups.

I have been looking around and am having trouble finding a product that will suite what we want at a reasonable price. Ideally we would like to be able to pay a one off fee to license our backup server in the datacentre and then be able to backup what ever we want to it, we dont want to have to pay and license for every single instance of file or application backup we configure, though not sure if something like this exists...

Anyone got any recommendations?

This is using Symantec Netbackup 7.7.3. There are 1 clustered master server, 4 media servers, and 4 DB servers. All are using SLES 11. There is a MS Windows-based server for administration console. 2 Robotic Library (IBM TS2500), each with 6 drives are supported.

Recently, a drive (drive 2) was found "no light" (sort of lost of fibre connectivity). When this happened, the given drive was found "down" and no backup job can be conduct. So, we got the vendor to replace the drive. On library console and web portal, this drive 2 is detected. Now, on Netbackup admin console > Media and Device Management > Device Monitor, 3 drives out of 6 were found DOWN. Attempt to up the drive/path were unsuccessful.

The next attempt is, we tried to run the Device Configuration wizard. We went through the process of Device hosts > Scanning Hosts > backup devices > drag & drop config > and finally, Updating device config. The wizard was completed successfully.

However, when back to the device monitor, we still see the same picture - 3 drives Down. Down means few of the media servers failed to connect and so on. What shall we troubleshoot to bring all drives up again? Shall restarting media servers a good try? or restarting few daemon?

Thanks in advance.

Relation between Vmware Snapshot and Windows Shadow Copy.

When I run the Backup (Veritas Netbackup with the option Vmware), the backup software will send API requests to Vmware to do the snapshot first, then the backup will start.

However I did not know that the VSS is involved in the Snapshots taken by Vmware.

VSS is windows shadow copy, I thought it is only involved in the backup when   there is a Backup agent installed on the windows computer to be backed up.

Any Clarification on that ?

Thank you

Hello community,

I have Googled this topic to death and I cannot find the solution to my problem.  Here is my setup:

Database Server 1:
SQL Server 2014 Developer
WIndows Server 2012 R2 Std

Backup Server 1:
SQL Server 2014 Developer
Windows Server 2012 R2 Std

Backup Server 2:
SQL Server 2014 Developer
Windows Server 2016 Std Eval

On Database Server 1, I have 3 databases: DB1, DB2, DB3.

I have created the following script to back each one up (one-at-a-time) to one of the backup servers:

Mapping Drives:
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use P: /delete'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use Q: /delete'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use P: \\192.168.0.200\Backup_F'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'net use Q: \\192.168.0.200\Backup_G'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir P:'
GO
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir Q:'
