Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. In addition to local storage devices like CD and DVD readers, hard drives and flash drives, solid state drives can hold enormous amounts of data in a very small device. Cloud services and other new forms of remote storage also add to the capacity of devices and their ability to access more data without building additional data storage into a device.

Hi

We are replacing our virtual infrastructure  and  have procured Dell EMC ME4024 and PowerEdge R640 Server.
10x 1.8TB HDD 10K 512e SAS12 2.5
6x 1.92TB SSD SAS Read Intensive

We have hired an implementation engineer to setup this Storage.

Is it possible to set Tier at LUN levels ?

If this is possible, will it be a good idea to set up the First LUN  as SSD Tier , so that I can run SQL server application on it ( High performance application)
My SQL server VM size is 300Gb

And Second LUN as All Tier ( with Spinning disks) non-performance applications.

Also what raid levels i need to set up for the first LUN and second LUN?

Please suggest what is the best way of setting up this.

Any help and sugessions would be great!
Thanks

Hi,

I have a question regarding windows server disk management. I want to extend a existing volume but I get the following error: "The volume cannot be extended because the number of clusters will exceed the maximum number of clusters supported by the file system."

What can I do to increase the limit?

Note: The newly created logical volume has 4 TB disks in it and consists of 12 disks and I want to add this one to the existing one.

Thank you in advance!

I'm having an issue opening a Word 2016 document in Protected View I was hoping for some expertise with.

When I try to open on local drive, I"m getting this error:
OS Not Configured
I then look at the properties and have the option to "Unblock" in the security settings as shown here:
Unblock
Issue:

This does open in "Protected View" on another workstation I have but NOT in my VDI environment.

    • All policies are the same, and "Protected View is Enabled in both environments - therefore the issue is I cannot open in Protected view in my VDI environment - on LOCAL storage.

    • Note 1:  If I copy the file to One Drive, or Sharepoint online and open with either Word or Word online - I do not get the error and it opens without being in protected view.

    • The only real difference I have noticed is with "Trusted Publishers".

    1. On a workstation where it opens without issue in Protected view, here is what the Trusted Publishers looks like:
    2. trustedpublishersworking.JPG

    1. On my VDI, where this does NOT open in protected mode and errors out, this is what my Trusted Publishers looks like:
    2. trustedpublishersNOTWORKING.JPG

Other than turning off protected mode in each app for 2016, is there a reason for this or other work-around or explanation?

    Thanks in advance experts!

    Hi,

I have a question regarding HP Smart Array configuration.

    My setup:
1x Internal Smart Array Controller (with an existing array)
New: 1x Smart Array Controller connected to a storage shelf.

I want to add the disks of the new storage shelf to the existing array (created on the internal controller). Is this possible?

    Thank you in advance!

High Point has a SSD7103 RAID controller that supports 4 NVMe drives in RAID 0, 1. 1/). Don't NVMe drives have the sames issues with TRIM that others SSD drives have where if you put them behind a RAID controller TRIM just won't happen?

Are SSD and NVMe drives so reliable that RAID 1 is all the fault tolerance you'll ever need?

Are there any NVMe RAID controllers that anyone has tried in a small server environment or is that still pushing it?

    Hello,

I am a new to using NAS storage device. I would like to use "SYNOLOGY 4-BAY DS918" NAS with 4 hard disks of 8TB Ironwolf Seagate in our Windows 2012 AD.

    Please let me know,
Is it compatible to operate under this infrastructure?
Can I implement RAID-5 system in this device?

I would really appreciate if you guys may suggest upon this.

As a result of an audit, it's been suggested that we disable Dropbox and Google Drive to prevent distribution of sensitive information as an "inside job".
Yet, there are obviously more alternatives/"threats"
    https://startupstash.com/dropbox-alternatives/
    I can't imagine blocking these services one-by-one.
And, in the case of Google Drive, I haven't figured out yet just *how* to block it - perhaps by removing some Google app's from workstations?
I guess one could block outgoing ftp transfers....

I can well imagine that this is an unrealistic objective - given the number of "threats".
But, rather than jumping to that conclusion, I'd value other perspectives.

Hi, we have DellEMC VXRAIL VMware vSAN Cluster consist of 4 ESXi hosts. We are using vSAN iSCSI targets hooked up to Virtual Machines for Windows Server 2012 R2, Failover clustering. The cluster works fine after configuring.

However, when I run the cluster validation test, it fails with below error:

Two disks have been found on node SRVVDB01.domain.local that cannot be distinguished from one another. The disks involved have disk signature c10b5a63, SCSI page 83h VPD descriptor iqn.1998-01.com.vmware.52e5e355fe26a1cb-a80ef9982d7fc722,L,0x0000000000000000, SCSI page 80h VPD Serial Number VITSERIALbaebec5cee2b845f0bcde4434b5acd30. Please verify the storage configuration. You must either mask (unpresent, detach) one of these LUNs at this node, or, run validation and specify a disk list that includes only one of these disks, for example by using the Test-Cluster cmdlet in Windows PowerShell.

    Please help !!

    Hi,

I have an ESXi 5.1 server with just one virtual switch for management network, iSCSI traffic vs storage and VM connectivity.
Both physical NICs of this server  are connected to Cisco switch on access ports.

I noticed on my switch several messages like this:

%SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host xxxx in vlan 100 is flapping between port Gi0/9 and port Gi0/10
%SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host xxxx in vlan 100 is flapping between port Gi0/10 and port Gi0/9

    I checked this URL:

    https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1012819

but I am not using neither Etherchannel nor Network failover detection with Beacon probing.
On virtual switch (ESXi) traffic shaping is configured with "Route based on source MAC hash", with both interfaces in Active, so I wouldn't expect flapping since VM's mac address are static.

    How can I avoid flapping?
I think I could simply put one network interface in standby mode.. but I'd need to check how much traffic is on that link.
    Thank you!

Hi, I have a Dell PowerEdge R630 with 6 disks (2 virtual disks with 3 disks each, both RAID5). Controller is PERC H730P Mini
One of tray caddy is broken, and I need to replace it.
I could put disk in "fail" state and replace tray caddy.
Since I can afford a downtime, I wondering if I can simply shutdown server, extract disk, replace tray, and power on again.
    Will controller raid "notice" anything?
    Thank you!

I'm running a domain controller using windows 2008 r2 in a raid 1 setup. This morning it crashed and won;t startup past a cursor on a black screen before crashing again. I've tried
1 ,starting in safe mode  2) using redundant boot records 3)booting to second drive without any different result.
I then tried windows 2008 r2 install disc and repair computer option. No image was available. I then went to command prompt and tried SFC /scannow, I got error msg "A system repair is already pending..." I then tried "dism.exe /revertpendingactions" It tells me that ScratchDir may be too small to work, but I have atleast 3.5 gigs free on a 186gb SSD.

So now i'm stumped. Can someone give me a suggestion of what to do next?  Thanks

I have a Windows 2016 server and it is running Windows Server Backup on a multiple times a day schedule and dumping the files to a USB drive.  everything is working but what I am trying to figure out is this.  Most backup software will keep x amount of copies on the storage device than then start over writing the oldest FIFO.  There is no way to tell WSB to do this so does it just run until the USB drive is full then crap out or does it run until full then start over writing?

    Thanks

Short description: Dell PowerEdge T300 logical drives keep disappearing about an hour or two after boot!

I've got a Dell Poweredge T300 server with 20GB RAM, 1.50TB storage, and running Small Business Server SBS 2011. The main function of this server is handling Exchange 2010. Roughly 1 to 2 hours after boot the server slowly begins to crash.

At first it looked like the SQL server database was full and something was possibly swamping the processes causing the server to freeze. While watching the disk accesses in the Resource Monitor I saw that the logical drives (C: and E:) would suddenly disappear . Once that happened all functions on the server would slowly crash and I would have to do a hard reboot. The reboot would take about 20 minutes before I could get to the actual desktop to view the event logs, task manager and resource monitor. Everything would run like normal then after about an hour or two the crash process would happen all over again (e.g. - logical drives would disappear, explorer freeze, need to do hard reboot, etc.).

This led me to check the RAID controller (Dell SAS 6IR). At times it froze while I was trying to go through the menu options. Having dealt with this before with another Dell server I suspected that the RAID battery might be failing. Looking at Array SAS1068E it shows a status of Degraded and and 0% Syncd. As I type this I'm about to return to the office to confirm which physical drive has failed.

On Friday afternoon I got in touch …

    Hi,

Parent and child processes are accessing same content from nfs share. based on some logic parent process deleted files which are already opened by child process. I think, it's internally created files which are .nfsxxxxxxx. These are with c++ application. Is there any settings or configuration to handle such issues to avoid .nfsxxxx files.

    Thanks,

Recently a user brought an old WD MyPassport 2TB drive to me.  It is an external drive and has a double connector (it looks like the one in this video - https://www.blogtechtips.com/2016/10/27/how-to-open-a-western-digital-my-passport-external-hard-drive/).  When I connect it to a windows machine it just makes a grinding noise and does not appear anywhere.  The same is true when attaching to a Debian Linux distro.  I was going to take it apart as in the video, but when I got it apart I realized it could not be put into my drive bay, which would take any normal drive, but not one with that connector.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to get the data off of this?

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can share a light on this,  have been asked to transfer/migrate Microsoft Stream Video files to Vimeo.

I have no experience in MS Stream or even where the videos files are stored but I presume would be in Sharepoint or Onedrive storage.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I  tried to find the free space on mounted volume which is aws elastic filesystem. used statvfs api to find, but statvfs_obj.f_bavail and statvfs_obj.f_blocks are 13digit numbers, statvfs_obj.f_files and statvfs_obj.f_ffree are zeros.

How to retrieve correct details from mounted aws efs on linux by using statvfs( mounted_filesys_path, &statvfs_struct_obj).  Th path looks like /mnt/efs_mounted_from_xx_city.

      OS: RHEL7.4,

      mount details:  nfs4, rw,relatime,vers=4.1,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,namlen=255,hard,noresvport,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=xxxx,local_lock=none,addr=xxxxx 0 0

In Azure I am creating a storage account, but need it to be accessible from our vNet's only.  During the Storage Account setup you can specify a vNet. The problem is we have two separate vNets in two different regions that needs access to this account. Instead of using vNet can we create a NSG for our Storage Account?

    Hi,

My system volume\dedup\chunkstore\{... }.ddp\data path has grwon to over 1 Ter.
How can u go about cleaning up or limiting the Amount of space that the sys vol is allowed to use?

i had already set a limit on the size which shadow copies can grow to as also re-directed the location of the shadow copy for the drive in question to another drive.

I have an HP Proliant G8 server.  Dual 12 core AMD processors.  It has 94 GB of ram and 16TB of local storage.  I would like to  use this in our test lab.  I have attempted to install ESXi 6.5 update 2 (HPE build) to in installed internal thumb drive, using a external flash drive and a USB connected DVD drive.

I have rebuilt the flash drive twice, once using Yumi and once using Rufus pointing to the VMWare ISO file.
I have reburned the ISO image twice using ImaBurn.

In every case, the server boots without any errors, but indicates no bootable media available.

I have altered the boot device from internal to external USB and made sure it was enabled.

I have also altered the boot sequence to CDRom when trying it from the DVD player.

Never had this issue before.  Anyone have any idea.

    Hello,

We have requirement to delete million of temp attachments from  windows server to ease up the storage space.
This attachment had been since in existence since 2014 - until as of date.

Can you please advise on the following points

    a) To begin with we will be interested in going with 6 months delete from 2014 onwards. Once the six month
delete is complete from 1-1-2014 - 6-30-2014, then afterwards we will proceed with next 6 months and so on.
Approx count will be around 3 to 4 millions for every 6 months.
We will be interested to proceed with phase delete instead of big bang delete as this is production environment.

    b) Can you provide if there are any tools or command available to perform the above requirement.

    Regards
    Tom

I'm configuring a VMware vSAN  on a few Dell PowerEdge R720s with a PERC H710 Mini RAID Controller (embedded) running vSphere 6.5.  I'm trying to surface the drives (2 SSD and 6 HD) but there are restrictions on the H710 not allowing me to convert to non-RAID.  VMware documentation indicates that drives must be set up in a "pass through RAID" configuration.  So, do I get another RAID controller that allows for no-RAID drives or is there a way of creating Raid 0 drives or can I mirror the 2 SSDs (RAID 1) and RAID the other 6 HDs.  Maybe I'm old school but I tend to trust controller RAID more than software raid, but it's required so not sure I can get around it.

    Hi,

We are having a new Dell ME4024SAN specced out and they have quoted for 10k SAS disks( 10x1.8 HDD 10k 512e SAS 12 2.5) and also they have added 2.62TB ssd for auto tiering.
If I go with 15k SAS dHardisk  and will it make noticeable speed difference.
    Any  help much appreciated
    Thanks

    Hi

We are going to upgrade our UPS on site.

We currently have a single Eaton 5PX and Eaton 5130 UPS running our single and only cabinet at head office.  We recently had a power cut which flagged issues.  These are the run time & load on the 5px and also a battery warning message.  We would now like to increase the wattage and run time, along with managing the UPS and also shutting down our on-premises vmware hosts if required.

We also have 2x old managed APC PDUs.

We have worked out that we have c6000 watts to cover.  Rather than buying a N=1 UPS at a steep cost are we able to use two 5px 3000 eatons splitting the load across the dual powered devices (switches, storage and servers) and use the 5130 for non-critical systems.
    Is this possible?

Would you also replace the APC PDUs for eatons, would we requires x2 and how best to configure?

    Thanks

I have been trying to backup my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo to an external hard drive that is connected to my PC, using Syncback Free. AVG has reported many threats while Syncback is attempting to do the backup. Most of them include "SBS" in the name of the supposedly infected file. When I take a look in the location where the infected file is meant to be, I find sometimes that is not even there. For a PC that is regularly having AVG run full scans, it seems very odd that it would discover so many infected files as soon as I start a backup. Could it be that Syncback is generating files that are causing AVG to consider them to be malware?
Can anyone suggest what they think might be going on here?
