Guide to Performance: Optimization & Monitoring
Guide to Performance: Optimization & Monitoring

Nowadays, monitoring is a mixture of tools, systems, and codes—making it a very complex process. And with this complexity, comes variables for failure. Get DZone’s new Guide to Performance to learn how to proactively find these variables and solve them before a disruption occurs.

Recently my one and only 1 TB hard drive failed.  I bought a 2 TB hard drive to replace it and was able to restore my system via a Carbonite image.

My confusion is that when I open "My Computer" and look at drive C:, its size is reported as  919 GB.  However, using the Disk Management tool tells me the following regarding healthy partitions:

78 MB, OEM partition

12.25 GB NTFS Recovery partition, system, active, primary partition

1850.69 GB NTFS OS (C: ) OS partition boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition

So what is actual size of drive C: ?  Is there any way to access the entire 2 TB of disk space?

(By the way, I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell XPS computer.)

SYSTEM
Windows 7 Ultimate
NTFS Boot C:\ Drive
Desktop Machine, 5.25 Inch HDD, 500 GB

BACKGROUND
Originally, I formatted the drive with two partitions of about 250 GB each.
One of the partitions is bootable with the OS on it. The other partition was for data only.

I used:  Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management
to Remove the Data Partition.

Then I tried to Extend Volume on the Boot partition to include the now empty data partition, but there is a message saying the space is limited.
You can only extend the volume to the available space shown below because your disk cannot be converted to dynamic or the volume being extended is a boot or system volume.
The space shown is only 250 GB total. So no extension is possible using Win 7 Disk Management.

QUESTION
I need to extend the boot partition to include the space just released by the other partition. The total space of the boot partition needs to be 500 GB, the full size of the disk (except for the "Reserved System" space of about 100 MB.) Is there a tool that makes this possible?

NOTE
I will be using Clone Zilla to clone this hard drive as I have done in the past. Not sure if there is a way to extend the size of the boot partition using that tool. I do not want to clone the disk 1::1 at the moment until this is resolved.

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for an easier way to connect to my HP ProCurve switches for monitoring and configuring via my workstation.
I know I can take a laptop and connect to each one to set a static IP and get SNMP enabled, but I'm looking for a more efficient way to accomplish these tasks.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Experts,

I'm looking to see which files were placed today (or last few days) on a network drive, since they can be in different folders/sub folders, how can I get such a list?

PS. If I can see which user created them that would be great..

People,

I’d like to know what’s your suggestion and comments regarding implementing SCCM and SCOM 2016 in the existing multi-site Data Centre environment for my environment below?
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/system-center-solutions

Because at the moment, my current IT environment is spread across three different cities in

Site1: 2 Data Center, 2 site offices [250 workstation users, 45 physical servers, 89 VMs]
Site2: 1 Data Center, 2 site offices [100 workstation users, 30 physical servers, 100 VMs]
Site3: 1 site offices [90 workstation users, 15 physical servers]

Most of them running Windows and VMware:
Server: Windows Server 2003, 2008 R2 up to 2012 R2 and few Linux servers.
Workstation: Windows 7 and Windows 10 and few MacOSX
Mobile device: Apple iOS and Android
Network device: Cisco routers, ASA & switches, HP switches and PaloAlto Firewall

At the moment I’m using multiple monitoring tools & software to achieve multiple things:

Workstation: LANSweeper
Server Monitoring: Solarwinds IPMonitor
Network Monitoring: PRTG
Server and Network Trending & Capacity planning: Zabbix [this is the only reason I use it and for capacity planning as well]

Can SCCM and SCOM version 2016 be implemented to replace those multiple old monitoring software above?

What are your challenges or cons when using SCCM/SCOM?

Thanks in advance

MY OS is win 10 pro 64 bit and I use Office 2016 and the Edge.  I think the Edge has accomulated a few additional Add Ins that I am not aware of.  How do I find out, the steps, to see what are the Add Ins that I have installed in the Edge.  And what are the basic Add Ins that are necessary for the efficient functioning of the Edge.
Thank u.

Hi folks,
I need to capture the security event logs on a Windows server and copy them to a remote file server on the same network. This needs to happen in real-time without user intervention. I was planning on running a scheduled task on either the file server destination or on the source server itself. Can anyone recommend a tool for accomplishing this task. One of the requirements by upper management is that it must be a free solution. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Using WINZIP 21

Is there a command line function that will output all filenames contained in a ZIP file, including their path, to screen? I use WINZIP to back up a particular directory tree daily. Recently, the ZIP file size increased by apx. 45%, and I do not recall creating any huge files that would account for this discrepancy. Accordingly, being able dump a file list from this week, and from last week (when the file was smaller) would be useful.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello Experts,

People here at work are still reinstalling the OS from scratch with the CD or USB.

The terrible thing after that is reinstalling drivers, Windows Updates, etc... It takes for ever.

In the past I used an imaging software Acronis. I will image a finished workstation with the drivers, the updates and everything else before adding to the Windows domain. Kept the image per type of system in a USB portable hard drive. It sure did made fast and easy imaging a system.

So the question is same software or are their other similar solutions that are better?

Thank you!

Just asking this as a quick sanity check - I just spun up a new 2012 R2 physical server with 64 GB of RAM.  How much of that ram will be reserved for the system address space?

Thanks

Hi,
Where are the places, like any Web sites, through which we can advertise the shipping services to our company?

Q1:
As we don't plan to get winzip licences , I was told by our End user support
team that password protected zip files can't be unzipped by Windows 7
(Profesnl) itself.  Is this true?   Zip files without password can still be unzipped.

Q2:
Is there any opensource command line zipping tool for Win 7 (both 32 &
64 bit) that could unzip a password protected file?  if so, provide a sample
command of this tool to unzip with a password

Hi Experts,

As seen attached, I have a backup script that performs daily backup, however would only like to keep files that were modified and have different size from previous file, as seen attached.

Therefore would like to have a script that loops for all files in given folder in order of name/date modified, reads the size and if its  the same as previous file deletes it.

Win 7 Pro SP1 is running digital photo programs. 8 processors with 16 gig ddr3 ram. After boot and stabilization, sys   has 144 processes running...seems excessive. Used CCleaner to stop what seemed un needed. Is there a process to further reduce resource footprint?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm trying to see if it's possible using psexec to see what shared network drives are available to a user on a given computer.

Please let me know how to go about doing this. I'm familiar with psexec.exe //computername "cmd.exe" to connect to them, but I believe that logs me in as the admin not the active user.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
Why do I get 'Access denied' below
11k.png
while I was with 'Administrator' account to the Win 2008 server in above?

This is the error from my event log:

Event ID: 1000

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 10.0.14393.479, time stamp: 0x58258a90
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.14393.479, time stamp: 0x5825887f
Exception code: 0xc0000374
Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll

When a user searches a specific network share using File Explorer's search field, explorer crashes and then closes.

So far, I have:

run a chkdsk on the local hard drive and the server where the share is
run sfc /scannow
verified that Windows 10 was up to date in terms of patches and updates
checked the permissions on the network share
deleted temporary files in the windows directory and under the user's profile
recreated the user's profile (manually, not from backups)
removed the anti-virus software
disabled all non-Microsoft explorer extensions using the ShellExView utility
run a PC cleaning utility, CCleaner
installed new video drivers
removed the old video card and installed a new one

The one thing that works for a day or so is running CCleaner.

Is there anything else I can do that might work?
