I would like to resurrect an old question since it is about four years old. I am looking for a good network system inventory tool that doesn't break the bank. I really like the PDQ inventory tool however the $500 /year price mark makes it difficult for a small 20 user firm like us. I could probably swallow half that.
I have looked into the original post at: https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28570579/Best-and-Free-tool-for-Network-PC's-hardware-software-inventory.html
and the Spiceworks doesn't seem to work for us for some reason.
Are there any other suggestions that are newer products?

Hi EE,

I have a peculiar problem, to say the least. Let me describe the environment:

- Windows IoT devices connect to SQL server to sync their date/time which is done by query
- When the IoT devices can't connect to the network, they revert to their BIOS date/time

We have series of Windows IOT devices running Windows 10 Embedded when they lose wireless network connectivity which infrequently happens they revert to the bios date/time.
However, the bios date/time is always out of sync and from prior analysis points seems to be set to last time the Windows ICD shell was disabled when configuration changes were made to the system.

Any ideas what could be causing this any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Experts,

I have the following script that

1- downloads from a FTP site all new files to a local folder
2- Copy all downloaded files to another local folder.

However I see that 2nd step is not working properly, it downloads/copies all files again to the 2nd folder, not only the new files.
Can someone help me fix that?

Hi Experts,

The script below connects to a FTP site and downloads all newest files to a local folder in my pc.

How can I change this script to include only files  either with wording "PAT" or "Sched"?
However if file name contains word "Full" it should not be included.

{

    $session.Open($sessionOptions)

    # Transfer files
    $remotePath = "H:\FTP\*"

    $sourcePath = "/Outbox/*"

Hi Experts,
I have a script (.ps1) that would like to run it every 15 minutes.
When I right click and select run with powershell it runs.
However when trying to run this thru the windows task scheduler it says running, but nothing actually happens.
Perhaps I need a way to indicate it should run with PowerShell?

Hi Experts,
I am looking for an Access file that was used about a month ago, however cant remember the name and since there were more recent files used, I cannot get to see them from under Access recent files list..
Is there any way I can get a list of all my Access files used in past month, along with date last opened?
Files can be either on the server or on local C drive.
Thanks in advance

There are many "always on top" utilities that can be used to make certain programs always stay on top of other windows.

However, I'm looking for an "always on top" utility that will make it so that whenever a certain application (such as snippingtool.exe) will always appear on top of other windows whenever it is launched.

I launch the snippintool.exe utility by pressing the Windows-R keyboard combination (to launch the "Run" dialog box and then type in "snippingtool" and press enter. Or on systems that I use all the time I have a keyboard combination set up that makes it so that when I press the predefined keys the snippingtool utility will launch.

The problem is that the snippingtool programs sometimes opens behind other applications (such as LogMeIn). I often need to take screenshots of remote systems I am connected to. Furthermore, I need to be sure that the snippingtool will always appear on top of all other program windows. I don't leave the snippingtool utility launched all the time but when I do run or launch it I need to make sure it will always appear on top of all other program windows.

What sort of more advanced "Always on top" utilities will allow this to be done?

Hi Experts,

I have a .bat file that is used to backup data.  I want to include all folders / files on a drive but exclude one folder.  I can't seem to get it to do the exclusion.

Here is the WinZip Command Line.

"C:\Program Files\WINZIP\WZZIP.EXE"  -xd\\PL1\PL1-G-Data\Photos\*.*   "Z:\PATLAPTOP1\PL1-G-Data\%date%\PL1-G PatData All.ZIP" "\\PL1\PL1-G-PatData\*.*"  -r -p

Explanation
- Job is run on the PC where the 'Z:' Drive is located.
- Drive to be zipped is on PC \\PL1.
-  The Drive to be zipped is PL1-G-PatData.
- Folder (with sub folders) that needs to be excluded is PL1-G-Data\Photos

What needs to be done to get it exclude the PL1-G-Data\Photos folder.  Right now there are no errors but it is including the Photos folder?

Note: If using an 'Exclusion Parameter File' is a better way them I ok with it.

Thanks,
Bob C.

Is it possible to detect when a user inserted an USB storage device and get notified by email or SMS?

I'm not looking for a solution which is blocking the usage of this device, just get notified.

Note: We are using PC's with Windows 10 mostly, and maybe some Windows 7.  All Home Edition, not pro and not on domain either.

The solution can be a software that we buy, or even C# code... anything useful and afordable.

Thanks you

On one of the computers we support, the Windows Wait Cursor (AKA the spinning halo) is there all the time to the right of the mouse pointer. Is there a utility I can install that will show the name of whatever process is running that is causing the Windows Wait Cursor to appear? This is Windows 7 Ultimate Version 6.1 Build 7601 SP1. I have tried running Performance Monitor and Resource Monitor but am not able to see which process is associated with the current activity which is causing the Windows Wait Cursor to be displayed.

Ideally it should just display the process name next to the cursor.

Thanks,
Don

Hi Experts,
Wondering why are my programs not always listed under start/my programs?!
I was looking for a program installed there about a month ago, and was listed there under my programs as well..
Today when I was looking for it, it was nowhere to be found!!
And I had forgotten the name of it..
Luckily I had this program installed in another pc where it was still being listed..
Once I got the name, I was able to type in and it opened.
But why all this hide and seek?!

We have watchdog devices in every server room/closet every location in our company.  Every device have an IP/hostname with cname.  So I can go by the name of the room.
Issue is I still have to go to individual every IP to monitor.  Is there an easy way to consolidate into one single page with links, that doesn't require a lot of html coding.
Any advice?   Solution using Watchdog15 devices with temp, and flood probe attachments.

Hi Experts,

We recently installed office 2016 and I'm having a hard time to get simple things working just the way they always did.
for example the following
1- When selecting and right clicking on a word typed in new email, why is the copy option not avail? (see attached)
2- When selecting a file to attach, I dont immediately get to see My Computer (see second attachment).
3- When I finally get to select a folder and realize have to move up one level, that option is gone..

Wondering how can I just get back my old tools/shortcuts working properly?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Does anyone know of an on-screen ruler or measuring tool that is very customizable?

I have found several downloadable ruler apps online (which are said to be able to display lengths in pixels/centimeters/inches) but most of them are old or inaccurate or in another language.

For example I'm using a 28" 4K 3840x2160 monitor (Acer CB281HK) which is set to 150% scale. I also have an AutoHotkey (AHK) script* which enables me to capture the pixel coords of any location currently occupied by the mouse cursor. Thus, it's simple to check a particular screen location to test a ruler for accuracy.

I don't necessarily need freeware and would be willing to pay a reasonable price for some utility or app if it is accurate, can be rotated to any degree setting, can be set to always-on-top, and is adjustable.

By "adjustable", I mean to some percentage of the default. For example, some rulers return a pixel length 2/3 of actual which indicates they are not compensating for my screen being set to 150% scale. That seems easy to fix by having a scaling box to enter the 150%.

Another setting in which this would be useful is sometimes when I use Windows Media Player (WMP), I would like to have an always-on-top time indicator. So for example, I'm currently watching a video that is 32 minutes long and by mousing over the bottom of WMP, I can see a numerical indicator showing where I am in the video vs the video length (eg 20:23/32:34). But that goes away as soon as …
