Virtualization is the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including (but not limited to) a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resources. Virtualization is usually the creation of a system that executes separate from the underlying hardware resources, or the creation of an entire desktop for systems located elsewhere, similar to thin clients.

Looking for advice on using Generation 2 for Hyper-V VMs. As we are in the process of upgrading all of our servers, I was thinking it might be a good time to move to Generation 2. Can you tell me if there is a reason not to? All of my VM host are already Windows server 2012r2.

Great link with info on the differences between Generation 1 and 2.

I'm trying to create  a VM in Hyper-V using a custom image I've got stored on a USB HDD.  I've gone through the steps that I've done in the past, plugged HDD into Host, then made disk offline.  For some unknown reason the option for Physical hard disk is grayed out.

Hi Experts,
I am new on Microsoft Azure. We are working on Proof of Concept for IaaS and Paas.  We have received the architecture diagram and based on that we have created the 38 resources (Vnet, subnet, VM, Load balance etc) for Region 1. Now we have to create same resources for Region 2. ( Diagram attached).

Can you please suggest and provide detail solution for create those resources automatically?

Is it possible to get script for whole diagram?

Let me know if you need any clarification.

Please Advice.

We're considering replacing a Maxta HCI solution.  Please let me know if you have done that and the solution selected, or are also considering it and the leading options.

Hi there,

Is there a way we could convert a VMware VM CD-ROM in vCenter from SATA to IDE without downtime? If there is, how should we do this as it restricted us to update from the GUI. Thinking if we could do this from the command line  converting the affected virtual machine CD-ROM virtual device node from SATA to IDE on the fly without shutdown BUT no idea how to do this.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

I want to gain understanding on citrix with regard to citrix provisioning method: PVS

Is there any good article which shows below related to PVS

1) merge vdisks. vdisk update
2) vdisk versioning
3) creating new vdisk version ( deleting the bad patch )
3) how roll back takes place on account of corruption on desktops

I am using virt-manager to create VMs on each Linux host. In order to access the VMs, I have to open up virt-viewer on each host. Is there a tool that I can use to consolidate all of the VMs into the same GUI console so I can view and use them easier?

When trying to migrate a VM running windows 10 i get :Virtual machine is configured to use a device that prevents the operation: Device 'HD audio ' has a backing type that is not supported. "This is a general limitation of the virtual machine's compatibility with the ESXi version of the selected host."

It was P2V but have no need for audio but see no way to remove or disable in device settings for the VM, does it have the be removed from the OS?

I have a  vSphere Client 5.5 with a Windows Server 2012 R2 and as a guest VM. The funny thing is that the num lock key set to ON when I move the cursor into the VM. When I move it out it willl set my num to OFF.

Greetings!

We have a virtual machine that sits in on an ESXi 5.5 development server, runs Scientific Linux 7 and is provisioned for 800 GB of space.  We want to move it to a production server, but since it is only using less than 50 GB of space, we would love to provision it to use 100 GB.  How should we proceed to move/compress this VM at the same time?  Use the converter?  Any guidance/instructions will be most welcome.

Hey all,

I am thinking of creating a virtual machine for one of my clients using Hyper-V. It will be a terminal server environment where they will be using a cetralised database and accessing emails and docs. Their documents folder is only around 50GB and they have been getting away with 240GB up until now but I will increase a little when I build it. My question: Is there a need to partition the OS from the data drive.. will this provide any increase in performance or reliability?

FYI We will be running SSD drives with 32GB RAM, 8 vCPU cores which I think is ample.

CPU and VMsHi,
I have a new server running Hyper-V 2019 and it came with two Intel Silver 4110  @2.1Ghz (8 core) CPUs and 64GB of RAM.
I have 4 virtual machines - (1) Domain Controller (2) Application Server (just files and folders)  (3) Remote Desktop Server (for two remote users running Word/Excel)  (4) Windows 10 (only used if & when I need to do some testing). There are 8 users on the network.
I am curious what would be best way to assign CPUs to VMs since there are two physical CPUs.
Currently each VM has 1 virtual processors as I accepted "default value" when creating these VMs except manually assigned RAM amount.

Thanks.

Planning on switching out our backup software from StorageCraft to Veeam.

Question on data centers. SC provides their own datacenter and Veeam doesn't. We already have other services configured with Amazon S3 so it's likely we'll use their services and replicate backups here. Anyone have any other recommendations or data centers they recommend?

Long story short - My client's one of the sub-companies is being sold. They were separated for a while on paper - but still were using the same IT infrastructure.
My job is to split existing company's IT infrastructure. Most of their data is mixed and stored in the same shared folders etc etc.
Since they use several Virtual Servers on HYPERV backbone - I plan to "clone" the existing servers, and when done - split the physical network.

I am thinking of using the VM replication as means of accomplishing this.
Do not have any experience with VM replication so far, but isn't this a standard for IT projects :) ?

My hope is that I will be able to bring the replicas to be "primary" after I separate the physical network, and i hope users for each company will see everything as it was before the separation.
Afterwards I plan to cleanup some files and resources that do not need to be shared, remove computer/user accounts etc.

Does it sound like a probable solution?
