Virtualization is the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including (but not limited to) a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resources. Virtualization is usually the creation of a system that executes separate from the underlying hardware resources, or the creation of an entire desktop for systems located elsewhere, similar to thin clients.

Is VMWare ESXi still free?

Hi there, years ago I used to donwload esxi (the free version) and setup VMs. Today I tried to download version 6.7 and it tells me I'm not entitled to it, did VMwarre change it, does a license need to be purchased now for the basic functions.

Thanks..

Hyper V question:

Basic setup:

I have two host machines - 15k drives / 32 threads / 128 GB RAM for RDS Farm

The way we have been setting these servers up is create VM1, VM2, VM3 on HOST 1 and VM4, VM5, VM6 on HOST2 and enabling local replication back to the other host. So VM1, VM2, VM3 has a replica on HOST2 and vice versa.

I also have two host machines with much more disk space that have 7.2k drives / 32 threads / 128 GB RAM for VM machines that aren't performance biased.

I'm wondering if it makes more sense from a performance standpoint not to cross replicate but to point the 15k hosts at the 7.2 host to store the replicas. Am I splitting hairs here?

Hi,

I want to copy a couple of vm machines to a different data center. When the migration is done, the vm on old data center is removed. Can we do that with Vcenter 5.5 or I have to use VmWare Converter?

Thanks

Hello Experts

How can I identify if I am working inside a VM?
considering that I may very well be inside with administrative privilege ?

I need to be able to prove beyond any doubt that I am inside or not a remote VM.

Hi All,

We currently have 2 * server 2008 domain controller. Both are backed up up nightly via Veeam. If we had a problem with one DC or indeed AD, what is the best practice to roll back to a previous working state. If for example one DC has a problem can I roll this one back and then AD etc will sync any changes made / discrepancies between the old data on the restored DC and any changes made during this time on the running DC. Is this a terrible idea?

Thankyou,
Paul

hi,

our MysQL InnoDB cluster 8.0.12 has 2 nodes out of 3 shut down to save resource for other VM and now I turn them both on, but I suspect that the InnoDB cluster is not working any more:

InnoDB cluster
1) how to justify the cluster status if everthing is ok ?
2) how to make the cluster work again?
3) or how to cluster resync well again?

Hi,

We are running exchange server 2016 in DAG setup. DAG is working fine. Databases are healthy.
I checked my exchange servers databases VHD's file size and notice that both servers databases VHD's size are not same. Please review the below image.
I checked database size in exchange servers and databases size are same on both server. Please review two images
Questions:
1. Why VHD's size are not same? Do i need to worry about it? There is no error related DAG in event viewer. Everything is working fine if server one is down than database move into 2nd server but I really need to know why different size of VHD's.
2. You can see that 'E16DB1_55A2801F_......AAD.avhdx' also taking so much disk space like 550GB. What's the purpose of avhdx? can we reduce the file size without damage anything.

I have just virtualized a Server2008R2 using DISK2VHD, which I have been using for decades without problems.
The Server2008R2 consists of a C drive, D drive + E drive.
After finishing I try to start this froma newly created VM om my Server2016 Hyper V host server.
HOWEVER start is failing due to boot error.
Can not find boot record.

I assume that the problem in fact is a simple boot order, but I dont know how to fix it.

When I look at hardware properties of the original Server2008 it says this:

Location 2    Bus 1   Target 0   LUN 0
Location 2    Bus 1   Target 1   LUN 0
Location 2    Bus 1   Target 2   LUN 0

I assume this is drive C D and E in order but Im not sure.
In the VM I have 2 IDE controllers both with 2 channels.
How do I set this up or does the problem lye in something else?

Please dont advise me to use other tools for virtulizations. I have used Disk2VHD for HUNDREDS of conversions without any problems :-)

Is there a way to assign a desktop from a floating pool? I want to test setting up a dedicated VM for a specific user but would rather not have to create a new dedicated pol to do so.

Thanks

Cluster nodes are Windows Server 2019 with the latest patches as of this post.
Guest is Windows Server 2016.

We have a two node-Hyper-V cluster.  We were merging a rather large snapshot into one of the VM's (deleting a checkpoint).

The VM was on node A but node B owned the storage and network resources.  Node B went offline because another engineer realized the IP address of the node was wrong so changed it without letting anyone know.  The event log of the node the VM was on has the following:

* Event ID 19070 - Background disk merge has been started - this is when I started the disk merge.
* Event ID 19050 - VM failed to perform the operation.  The virtual machine is not in a valid state to perform the operation - this is when we had the issue with node B.
* Event ID 16400 - VM cannot access the data folder of the virtual machine.  - VM is down hard at this time.
* Event ID 19100 - The description for Event ID 19100 from source Microsoft-Windows-V-VMMS cannot be found.  - When I saw this error, I about lost my lunch.
* Event ID 19070 - Background disk merge has been started - looks like the disk merge started up again.
* Event ID 19090 - VM background disk merge has been interrupted.  - Ouch.
* Event ID 19070 - Background disk merge has been started - looks like the disk merge started up again.
* Event ID 19090 - VM background disk merge has been interrupted.  - Getting nervous again.

I'm asking for the best way to replace VMware ESXi hosts with new hardware.
We currently have HP Dl380 servers Gen 9 hosts running ESXi 6.5 and are looking to go to HP DL380 Gen 10 ESXi 6.7
We have four 10 GB network Adapters in each server , each connected to different vSwitchs.
The new hardware will also have Four 10 GB adapters and will end up being configured identical to the Gen 9 server.
We are running vCenter Server Appliance 6.7.0.14000

What is the best way to install the new servers ? and end up with the same configuration as the old servers ?
Can I backup and restore the VMware configuration ?
Let me know your best experiences with accomplishing a replacement like this

Hello,

I have 3 DCs,2 VM DCs and  1 physical DC and I want to virtualize last physical DC.
To virtualize DC  infrastructure shouldn't be a problem
https://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/virtualized-domain-controllers-4-myths-12-best-practices/
but what about cluster environment
„In 2008 R2 and prior, a cluster wouldn’t start at all if it couldn’t contact a domain controller. This is no longer true in 2012 R2 and later. Even if the cluster service won’t start, both Hyper-V and VMMS.EXE will. With basic cluster troubleshooting techniques, you can bring a clustered virtual machine online without the cluster running. These are techniques that you should know anyway if you’re operating a Hyper-V cluster.“

I have 3 NOD vmware(6.0) cluster and I want to virtualize last physical DC.
Please give me some advice, hint, best practices, share your expirience…about virtual AD environment in vmware cluster.
Thank you

Hi,

The "NVWatchDogService" service on our Windows 2012 R2 server stopped working,
task manager status shows this service "Starting" even after reboot.

There are two Event Viewer errors when stopping and restarting this service:

  Event Error 1.
Description:
Service cannot be started. System.ApplicationException: Failed to start java Service.
   at ShunraBootstrapperService.JavaStarter.StartService()
   at ShunraBootstrapperService.BootstrapperService.OnStart(String[] args)
   at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.ServiceQueuedMainCallback(Object state)

   Event Error 2.
Description:
Error while creating file: Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\HPE\NV\OpenJRE\bin\NVServicesJ.exe' is denied.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

When my customer runs her report from Excel 2016 64 bit, with 3 million rows, her CPU hits 100%. She is running this on a Windows 7 virtual machine, 12 gigs of ram, 130 gig drive, 2 VCPU (what ever that means) As per the customer this worked till last month. I did all the usual stuff, check off disable hardware acceleration, unchecked protected view, also created new local profile. Any suggestions?

I have a DC that is a VM and it keeps shutting down (every 5-10 days or so) with the error, "There is no more space for vitual disk "CN-000001.vdmk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session."

I have to revert to an old SnapShot to get it to run again. Because disk space appears to be running out, I'm fearful of deleting the old SnapShot and creating a new one.

Any help would be appreciated!20190820_DataStore-1.PNG20190820_DataStore-2.PNG20190820_DataStore-3.PNG

Hi, I am using ESXi 6.0 cluster with 9 nodes and 2 SAN (MD3200 and MD3800) through iSCSI.
I am trying to move one particular VM to one storage to another.
Every time, about 94%, I got error "timeout error".
I tried with this solution:

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1010045

and raised fsr.maxSwitchoverSeconds  to 900, but I got same results.

This VM has just one disk (with one snapshot created last week).

Any suggestion?
Thankyou!

Hi,

In VMWare when we click on Snapshot, is the snapshot created represents the image at the time we click on "Take a snapshot" or when snapshot process is completed?

We have Few VMs running with mission critical Applications where Antivirus is not allowed  by App Owner
What else can be used here with min cost and better service?
vShield dependency with VC /Esxi Licensing ?
Can we use vShield Endpoint  ? if yes what all are prerequisites and cost estimation

VM Host CPU over subscription, if a VM host has 24 logical processors and has say 40 vcpu configured would you consider that oversubscribed? I'm not sure anyone does 1-1 right? this host is in a cluster and DRS enabled.

CPU Cores : 12 CPUs x 2.00 GHz
Sockets : 2
Cores per Socket : 6
Logical Processors : 24
Hyperthreading : Active

On ESXI 6.5 a VM has the error:
There is no more space for virtual disk 'abcd-02.vmdk'. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.

How do I solve this issue?

Dear Experts

I have never seen this before. I have VM running W2012 R2 standard,¨

My NIC works normally when its address is received from DHCP.

When I assign this IP as static IP, it stops working.

Any idea why?

Thanks
