Virtualization is the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including (but not limited to) a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resources. Virtualization is usually the creation of a system that executes separate from the underlying hardware resources, or the creation of an entire desktop for systems located elsewhere, similar to thin clients.

Is there a way with Veeam backup version 9.5 to do a restore from like a time frame range?
ex: Sept - Dec for a certain file
I don't see anyway to do that just wondering if it is possible or not and if so, how can I set that up?
Exchange server 2013 VM (Hyper-V 2012R2) has low disk space.  Am I able to increase the partition size with an exchange store located there?
Environment = Vcenter Version Build 10244845
ESXi, 6.5.0, 7967591

I shrank a flat-vmdk on a vm and now,  vcenter wont let me power on or storage migrate the VM.

I followed this guide -
(I should never done it! Big mistake)  The guide seemed so straight forward and I did not think anything would happen.

Error I get when I try to Storage Migrate the VM:
Error I get when I try to power on the VM:

Let me explain exactly what happen which may help you figuring out a solution:

1.)I Powered off the VM because memory hot add was not enabled and I needed to increase the RAM from 32gb to 228gb total.
When I went to increase the ram I mistakenly increased the Hard Disk from 80GB to 228GB and clicked ok!!!
With the VM still powered off, I decided to try and shrink the flat-vmdk following that above guide.

I followed the ONLY portion of the guide which shows how to edit the .vmdk descriptor file.

Keep in mind the VM was powered off the entire time.  So I skipped the first portion of that guide about shrinking the disk from Windows OS.

I followed this guide exactly and successfully changed the flat-vmdk to show 80GB :)  But now I get those errors when trying either power on the VM or storage migrate it!!

Please help!
Good day. We have a nasty Proxmox kernel error on a RAID1 system: (out of /var/log/messages)

Our RAID-controller is: SAS2004 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 [Spitfire] (pretty old LSI low budget controller)
Our Proxmox system is: Virtual Environment 5.4-4 running on Debian 9

The problem seem to occur when the load average climbs over 5-7 (and higher).
Someone mentioned to me maybe upgrading the firmware of the RAID-card but I have not found any drivers yet.
Any ideas where to catch them or any other ideas on this issue ?
Thanks a bunch
Hi All,

We are looking at updating our server infrastructure (Windows based) as much as we can to 2016 and are pricing up the licencing. We run a vm setup across 4 physical hosts running approx. 30 servers. We have been informed by a Microsoft licencing expert that a datacentre licencing is the best way forward, and that covers us for two previous version of windows server for x amount of servers. They also said there is no such thing as a datacentre version of the operating system.. This is where I get confused, as I can download and install a fully fledged datacentre 2016 server, or upgrade our standard servers to datacentre. Do we go with the datacentre licence proposal and I build datacentre servers, or will the datacentre key also work with server standard, and the licence simply covers all of that particular physical host (or upto the specified number of servers in the licence)?

Hope that makes sense.

Kind Regards,
I need to draw a VM diagram with its NIC connection to show customer.

What is vmkernel and how is it related to the vmnics in a VMware setup?
What is the correlation between virtual Nics and physicial nics?  I have  the following:
wrmnic0 - 10 gig fibre
wrmnic1 - 10 gig fibre both connected to my NAS
wrmnic 3,5,6 & 7 all connected on a VMswitch 2
wrmnic2 connected on vmswitch 1

I'm trying to add 2 more servers on the same vlan however, I don't have any more nic cards.  I have 4 ports on a seperate nic on the hardware but it's just not showing up.
On my vmswitch2 I created VP port group and the server is up and running - but is the correct?  Will the traffic get slowed down.  I'm enclosing a screenshot
I have a Windows 10 Pro machine with two Ethernet ports.  One is on the board and one is a PCIe card.  They both work and get DHCP addresses.

I am trying to route my traffic done in Windows through the one on the board and have all the traffic from my VMs (I am running a Windows 10 LTSB and Ubuntu Server) via VirtualBox.

How can I accomplish this?

I need a bit of help with a licencing query as Microsoft make it so obscure so you end up buying more than you need and I have conflicting information from so called licencing experts!

I have 2 host servers with 32 logical cores on each and 160GB.  I want to install Server 2019 as a VM on one of the hosts and want to ensure I have the correct licencing purchased.  So, if I allocate 6GB and 2 logical cores for this new VM running server 2019 - how do I have to licence it?  Licence it for all of the cores that it could use or just what I allocate to it?  Also, if other VM's are on each host and have been allocated resources which the new server couldn't use, do I include these or exclude them?  The servers are set up in a failover cluster.
Dear Experts,

I have a physical machine with 2 sockets, 20 Cores and 40 Logical processors. I have installed virtual machine via hyper visor on the top of it with 1 socket and 16 virtual processors. My question is I have read on Microsoft website if we need licensed for windows server 2016 standard edition we have take the licenses for all cores in physical machine.
In my case I need to get the licenses for 40 processors right? But why we need to get the licenses for 40 processors despite using only 16 processor in VM ? There is any other way to make it cost efficient?
If I unregister a VM from one Host, and then RE-register it to a completey different host, does it receive a new GUID? or whatever and potentially cause issues with Veeam backup of the VM for example?

The reason why I ask is because I am tasked with migrating VM's this way since there is no absolutely no other option available and I need to get certain VM's off of one host and onto another.  My only concern is perhaps the GUID of the VM or its ID will change and cause issues with Veeam backup.  Is this a valid presumption?
I know in Azure you can create a v2 storage blob and set it for cool or archive storage. If we want to build a VM that will host data that is not used often, how can we make sure the VM's data disks are using cool storage if the VM uses managed disk?
Is it safe to delete all the -aux.xml files I see left over from sVmotion'ing vm's?
aux file

I have seen a thread on here from earlier which shows that it is safe to delete, but I am noticing a whole lot of them being left over after I sVmotion vm's to other datastores.

And the dates on them are 12/12/2018.  That's not that long ago so I am a little nervous to delete them.  I read somewhere that they are old ver 4.x descriptor files for snapshots and are no longer used in ver 5.x and above.  Can someone confirm this?

I would like to delete them all instead of moving each and every one of them to their VM folder on the destination datastore.
I keep receiving the attached error message in VEEAM:
Dear Experts,
Creating a disk partition via disk management utility  on virtual machine that runs on hyper visor is same as the the physical machine???? Last time I created the partition of VM that run on hyper v. I found the the new partition created on my physical machine automatically. It was little confusing. Can you throw some light on this issue??

VM is windows server 2016.

Many thanks for your valuable advice in advance
Hi Experts

we have Vmware environment

we have VSAN 6.7 cluster 20 hosts with more than 300 TB
we are using vmware distributed switch
we have Vcenter  6.7 windows Vcenter not appliance

now i got some problems on Vcenter and i have no backup for this Vcenter

i will try to fix this issue and migrate to a an appliance

but my question if i am not able to fix this Vcenter

can i just destroy this Vcenter and deploy an appliance 6.7U2 then  re add  the VSAN cluster to the new Vcenter

and what about  vmware distributed switch any problem here

my point after i create an new Vcenter how can i add the whole VSAN cluster

i don't know the steps for such approach

i know it is not recommended and etc

i just want to know int he worst case how can do such instillation without any interruption for any VM running on this VSAN cluster

please some steps by steps details

I have a single domain controller which runs in a virtual machine hosted by Hyper-V server 2019 which is a domain member but only runs server core i.e. command line and powershell. My dc is showing as started though I believe the boot is actually failing. I cannot get any further because I cannot connect Hyper-V manager to the Hyper-V server because domain connectivity is screwed up since my only DC is down - no DNS , no Active Directory, no authentication etc.. How can I fix the boot problem my dc is suffereing from when I do not have any access to it.  I WAS in the process of setting up a second dc on another physical machine as part of a migration to Server 2019.  Now I'm stuck.
VMware workstation pro 14.

Experts, how do I enable the ability to cut and paste from HOST to VM?

See screenshots of my VMs PREFERENCe < INPUT tab.

I am unable to cut and past from HOST to VM on text or applications.
which is the best to host vhd files on datastorage
sas or 10gcoper or 10gfiber?
We are currently carrying out server virtualization and consolidation project of our domain controllers. We have;
one domain we could call security.local with 3 domain controllers for the security department, Domain functional level is currently on server 2008 and Forest functional level is on server 2003.
      4 domains we could call;
        aci.local( 2 DCs, Forest function = 2003, Domain Function = 2012R2)

aci2.local(2 DCs, Forest function = 2003, Domain function = 2003)

aci3.local( 2 DCs, Forest function = 2003, Domain function = 2012R2)

aci4.local( 1 DC, Forest function = 2003, Domain function = 2012R2)
        For the Engineering department

There are no DHCP servers in any of the domains, but all domain controllers have DNS service.

Our requirement is to migrate and consolidate the above design using the newly set up VMWare datacenter and highlighting on security and segregation of the 2 departments, so please advice on how we should approach this. We thought about setting up a new Root domain with 2 domain controllers and creating 2 child domains for both departments and creating an active directory design that consolidates engineering domains into OUs and using the Active Directory Migration Tool to do an inter\cross forest migration of computer and user accounts.
Looking for recommendations for a new VM Host server. We are looking at purchasing a new server to be used as a VM Host Server. I would prefer to stay with HP Proliant series. At present we use HP Proliant DL380p Gen 8's and they use Windows Server 2012 standard for the OS.

The new Host will be using Windows Server 2016. I'm looking at HPE Proliant DL380 Gen10. I'll be setting them up using raid 6 with hot swap spare. What I don't know.. is this servers process powerful enough to be a VM host? How much RAM will I need for the host now that it will be running Windows server 2016?

        hi guys

I'm trying to understand vmware hyper convergence in very simple terms and its advantages?

In the current place I'm in, we have multiple sites, each site has a Vmware cluster, vSAN's and also have a cloud footprint.

Does hyper convergence in my current environment mean, mixing the environment we have on site along with cloud? I'm trying to understand this better. If you could explain it in lamen/simple terms that would be great.

        Thanks for helping
        Hi Guys,

We have a mission critical server on a Hyper-V (VM) for which I would like to run an export to have a copy of the original machine.

I will be doing the export, while the server is running and high in demand.

The server / services can't be affected in any way.
Has anyone experienced any issues with exporting a VM from a running server, or is this absolutely safe to do?
Does anyone know of a way to remotely access an application directly via a website, similarly to logging into a Citrix virtual environment?

I need to be able to access the application such as Outlook from a personal computer, but I do not want any data from Outlook stored on my personal computer.  In addition, I do not want to use OWA.

I am looking for something similar to SoftGrid (which I know was replaced by Microsoft).
        Hi Guys,

I have an Exchange 2016 Standard server with client access and hub transport role on a VM.

Is it possible to have another Exchange Standard client access server on the same domain reading from the same Exchange DB.
Thus mailboxes accessible from both client access servers?
