Virtualization is the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including (but not limited to) a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resources. Virtualization is usually the creation of a system that executes separate from the underlying hardware resources, or the creation of an entire desktop for systems located elsewhere, similar to thin clients.

I need to move or clone a virtual server from one VCenter to another. I know I did something similar with VMware 5.0 but now I have VMware 5.5. I downloaded the latest VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and installed it on the machine I want to move. I go to Convert Machine and leave the drop down as "The Local Machine". I hit next and leave the destination type VMware Infrastructure virtual machine. Then I run into trouble. On this screen I assume I should be pointing to an ESXI host on the other vcenter? Is that correct? Or should I point directly to the new VCenter? and for login credentials. I cannot seem to get anything to work. I tried my AD account, that is also a Domain Admin and what I think is the local host ROOT password but It does not seem to like my credentials. Am I on the right track?

Im setting up Veeam backup and replication to backup my vm. the host is a server 2012, the vm is a linux [with the windows vm I have no issue] In the Guest Processing tab at the  Guest OS credentials, when I run a task it fails. Itreid with my user and pass and with the root none work.
Microsoft server 2016 licensing question - I have some Windows 2008 servers I need to upgrade. They sit on Windows Server 2012r2 Standard Host. I'm looking to move them to Windows Server 2016 Standard. First, I assume, I need to upgrade the host to Windows Server 2016 Standard. Most of them have 2 processors with 4 cores each. With 4 VM's that have  windows 2008 or windows 2012. Therefore, I need 16-two-packs of core licenses.

On a few of the host, I have a windows 7 box and a linux box for Cisco Umbrella. How do this VM's affect my licensing for the host?

hi guys

We've got problems connecting from our PC's to the Vcentre server that is on our own local LAN. The version of Vmware we are running is 5.5 which we upgraded around a year ago. Ever since, we have had a lot of performance issues on it. So the Vcentre itself sits on a physical IBM X3550 M3 server with around 8GB of ram. We can't even ping it. RDP'ing is just now impossible. However, once we restart the server manually, we can RDP and then after like 10mins, our session times out.

We were told that Vmware 5.5 and above should really be virtual and therefore sitting on the physical entity could well be causing problems. We can connect without any issues to the servers within the virtual infrastructure.

Is there a diagnosis for this? Is it a bug?

Thanks for  helping
We have a vm running 2012 R2 and for some reason the CPU on it keeps running around 95-100%
When I go into the task mgr, it doesn't show any process really using much CPU. Is there something I can check to see what is causing the cpu to be so high thus causing the server to be sluggish?
I am trying to recover a recently deleted AD object and I used LDP to view all Deleted Objects.  Rather than using LDP to recover the AD object I enable Recycle Bin and upon that all Deleted Objects were purged.
  1. Do you know if this is normal behavior and is there a new location for these Deleted Objects?
  2. Is there a way to recover one object from a VM snapshot in a SANDBOX? I was thinking I can export the AD object and then import it back.
There is a "Consolidate Virtual Machine Disk Files process that is stuck and i need to kill it ASAP.

Cannot stop/cancel a "Consolidate virtual machine disk files" Process in VCenter  The option to cancel is grayed out.

The process is running from our Backup server service account.  It is running a backup job on the VM and it first takes a snapshot of the vm and then consolidates.  But it is stuck on "Consolidating Virtual Machine Disk Files"  and i already tried to cancel the job in our backup server and it does nothing.

There are two processes currenlty running on the VM

Process 1 = "Consolidate virtual machine disk files"

Process 2 = "Clone Virtual Machine"

Need help to force kill the Process 1 = "Consolidate virtual machine disk files" process only.

The process is holding up all of our Backup operations on our Arcserve UDP Server.  It is critical that we are able to kill that process immediately

I have tried running several commands via ESXi SSH to identify the process and kill that process only, but it is not clear what process ID it is!

i tried the command "esxcli vm process list" and i get the following:

i tried the command "ps | grep <VM_NAME>  and i get the following:
Not sure which process is the "Consolidate virtual machine disk files" process which is the one i want to kill.

I absolutely cannot kill the Process 2 = "Clone Virtual Machine" as it has been running for over 24 …
I have a really simple situation which gives me a world of problems right now!!! :-)
I have a Server 2016 with the Hyper V role installed hosting 3 virtual servers plus 1 virtual Windows 10 pc.

Now Im trying to set up a NEW virtual Windows10 pc.
I started out by just taking a copy of the excisting virtual PC and my plan was just to change ip, computer name and so.
HOWEVER for some strange reason this virtual Win10 could not see the network.
After fighting with this pretty common problem for several hours, I installed a fresh copy of Windows10 but this problem persists!!!

I have tried EVERYTHING!!!
Doing netsh resets, release/renew, restart, manual ip configuration YOU NAME IT
My conclusion is that it is the host server blocking but I dont know how to fix this!

Bonus info: The configuration of virtual nic is the same as the other, running virtual Windows???

HEEEEEELP!!!!! :-)
People today are virtualizing servers just for the sake of virtualizing. I started playing. I have an old Server laying around. E3-1230, 16GB memory, Adaptec 6405 controller with three new Seagate 7200rpm SAS drives in a RAID 5 configuration. It is dated but not a real slouch. So I installed Server 2019 Standard the installed it again as a VM and migrated my Server 2012 to it. First thing I noticed on my workstation was that things were running slower. Not to a dead stop but noticeably slower.

So what the heck. I virtualized a Windows 10 Professional workstation. It doesn't do much but it is so slow doing everything it is painful. I would kill myself if I had to user it every day. Between the virtualized server and workstation I have to be doing something wrong. They just shouldn't be that slow what what I have heard. Both are Hyper-V. I have to be missing a basic setting. Any general help or guidelines on what I could be missing?
I am trying to expand a disk on a virtual machine which is hosted in VMware.  The option to expand is greyed out.  Upon examination the disk name is appended with .00001.vmdk.  As I researched it appears that this is caused by having a snapshot.  I was getting a message that consolidation was required.  I did this and it completed successfully, however did nit resolve the problem.  I also created a snapshot and then “deleted all” - with the same result.  I have found a couple of posting which talk about lost or corrupt snapshots, but I don’t seem to find a clear way to resolve this issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I only find  Docker benchmark at CIS site.

is docker equivalent of container or is there a separate container hardening guide?
is there anyway to make the remoteapp performance better so can it work under low connections speed?
I had to rebuild my Replicating server due corrupt windows files causing me not to be able to upgrade to the new 9.5.4 version.

After, rebuilding the server, reinstalling the Veeam Backup & Replicating software and importing the backed up config files, I'm getting an error.

When I try to re-scan the local host I'm getting a [esxi-Server.domain.local] Disks and volumes discovery failed Error: The remote name counld not be resolved: 'esxi-Server.domain.local'  Host discovery failed.

Can anyone help me with this?
I have a scsi card that we are trying to pass through to a virtual machine using vmplayer. The SCSI card is used to control a high end printer and not for a hard drive. I have considered vsphere or hyper-v server but want to see if it is possible with what we already have installed .
I have a Hyper-V virtual machine that is currently offline, but i don't know the name of its host. Is there any way to look up this info?

I know there are commands to log into a running VM and get the host info, but that doesn't help me here.

We have problems with Microsoft Definition Updates on Windows 7 Clients. According to Woody there is a problem:

Error 2
All physical devices are affected. Are you also affected? Are there any workarounds?

Hello guys.

I need to pull some servers down from Azure into an on-premise data center.

The enspoint platform in the datacenter will be VMware. In azure the wm´s are both windows and Linux.

I would like to use the VMware converter vis proxy becuse Azure and Datacenter will be linked via VPN or MPLS. Which seems to be most streight forward compared to that I can use Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer and download the VHD´s but still that will leave me with HyperV and and another job to convert into VMVare.

Suggestions please based on practical experience please :)
We have a VMware appliance that is now corrupted and we cannot get into the virtual center.
I need to create a new vm appliance. What is the steps for me to create this new appliance and get access to al of the vms and host once again.

Hello Experts,
I have a quick question(s), i have a client with an HP DL380 G6 running ESXi 5.1 and I need to upgrade the system to ESXi 6.7. The question is:

1) Is the hardware compatible with v6.x
if so, would the version u6.x be able to run the 5.1 vms?

My plan is to run the newer version from a usb key.

Many Thanks,

How do I remove the snapshots on a hyper-v. Can not edit the disk because- Edit is not available because checkpoints exist for this virtual machine.
