Virtualization is the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including (but not limited to) a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resources. Virtualization is usually the creation of a system that executes separate from the underlying hardware resources, or the creation of an entire desktop for systems located elsewhere, similar to thin clients.

I am new to VMWARE..
In ESXi 6.5, I have a SSD Datastore (500 GB) that is giving a Data usage warning (free space low) .
The Server installed on it only uses 80GB, whereas the Virtual disks are 400 GB.
why all this difference and how to restore unused space.
I need to build embedded Linux image using Yocto Project.

Yocto requires Python 3.4.0 or greater
I have Python 2.7.15+

How to upgrade python in Linux VM that I can connect to with windows PC secure shell like puTTy.  Also, I can connect to Linux VM by Remote Desktop connection from my windows PC.

Im testing veeam backup for o365 and have jobs set to run tonight to save locally to repository c:\ on the veeam VM in azure.  Its backing up share point and exchange.

Ive followed lots of: but need guidance to  whats the best practice for backup repositories?  i.e. storage account in azure or VM or virtual NAS/SAN..?

We upgraded a physical sql server from SQL Server 2014 to a 2016 VM.  There were a lot of changes made outside of just the SQL Server upgrade:     OS, Application, SQL Server edition, changed to VM, to name a few.

It is v2016 sp2 CU8.  It was Standard Edition before, and still is now.  The server is maxed at 128GB ram for max server memory (mb).

From the point of go-live on the new server, ALL performance has been dreadfully slow.  20-30 times slower response than we saw on the old server, for the calls that complete. A lot of them are also timing out.  Basically, it is unusable for production requirements.

I have checked everything -- the disk, the cpu, the memory usage -- I did a blitz and blitzfirst check, trying to find what is dragging the server --- absolutely none of my checks are coming back with anything questionable.  I don't see any memory or cpu pressure, I don't see anything but expected read and write latencies on the disk and tempdb.  I cannot find anything at the sql server to explain this remarkable performance degradation.

I believe it could be the VM, but I do not know how to confirm the VM configuration is good or lacking.
I also fear it could be something new in SQL Server 2016 that I am unaware of -- but, I've performed the 2014 to 2016 upgrade before, and never seen anything like this.

Any Expert help?  A script I can run to point to something as the cause of this problem?  Ok, I know that is too easy, but I need some insight.  Any …
I am trying to set up a file server cluster using 2 VMs hosted on an S2D2019 cluster. Both compute and storage takes place on the S2D cluster.

I have create 2 vms FSC1 and FSC2, i have then created the cluster called FSC and created a file server called FSS.

On both VMsi have attached a shared VHDS also hosted on the S2D cluster.

I have tested speeds on the VMs C:\ drive using diskspd.exe and i can get over 3GB read and 1GB write running at 75/25 r/w with a 64kb file.   no problems it works great. I have then tested copying large files from another location to the C drive and it gets around 700MB/s   again no issues with this.

I then go to the drive hosted on the VHDs on the server that is hosting the storage and try to run diskspd.exe again. I get the message

"WARNING: Could not set valid file size (error code: 87); trying a slower method of filling the file (this does not affect performance, just makes the test preparation longer)"

After a while it comes back saying no reads and no writes. If i try to copy a file to this drive i get 10MB/s trying to copy using the share path and 30MB/s trying to copy using the local path.

Is there anything that could cause such pathetic performance? Maybe something i have missed? I created the VHDS on FSC1 and then attached it to FSC2.

Thanks in advance for any help and just let me know if you need anymore information.
Hello EE, I've got a weird issue when I turned on Hyper-V in Add/Remove Programs,Turn Windows Features On/Off it killed the WiFi on my machine.  It for what ever reason placed the WiFi Device in a disabled state, unable to enable.  I checked to verify there were no power settings that could be causing this.  After doing a little troubleshooting I decided to remove Hyper-V, after Hyper-V was removed WiFi works fine again.

I have a Windows 2016 VM of which screen resolution is really bad (RDP from Windows 10).
VMWare tools are installed, no clue what else could be going on.

Please advise.

Our school has 2 DC's

DC1 is a physical box running Windows 2008r2

DC2 is a VM running Windows 2008r2

DC1 has all FSMO roles

I've successfully completed migration to DFSR

The AD schema is 47

I want to replace BOTH DC's with 2019 servers

NEW_DC1 - physical

I'm looking for advice on the order of tasks to get this done.

Thanks for your time !!!

How can I associate a VM on at ESXI 6.x host (DELL R730) to use a specific physical ethernet port on the server?  I need this VM to be the only thing attached to the physical server port, as it will represent a publicly-facing Web server running on a separate VLAN.
Exchange 2016 Standard running as VM on Server 2019 Hyper-V --- ALL  Exchange services have stopped . This has happened 3 time over the last 4 months.
Quick question;

I know with PowerCLI I can vMotion a VM like so;
Get-VM VM1 | Move-VM -Destination (Get-VMHost ESXHost2)

Get-VMHost ESXHost1 | Get-VM | Move-VM -Destination (Get-VMHost ESXHost2)

But if I have 'a lot' of vms to move in a CSV or a text file, how do I migrate them all at once, by importing the text/csv looping though it and moving each VM it finds in that file?

Need to automate few reports in separate excel sheet
  • VMware License utilization report
  • VMware Performance reports
  • VMware Health reports
  • Storage Capacity Report
which can be sent weekly /monthly on email

Please help for script to be used  for above requirements
We currently use Veeam and Veeam Copy Jobs to an Exagrid de-duplicating appliance.  Exagrid automatically sync's our data center backups to our remote office.  To supplement that, and to protect against a ransomware attack, we want cloud air-gapped backups.  We presently use Veeam copy jobs to iLand for that purpose but it's not going well.

We are about to demo CommVault but I figured before doing so, maybe I should take a step back and ask for thoughts on:

CommVault vs. Zert0

The ONLY thing I like about Veeam copy jobs to a cloud provider is the provider's "insider protection" which basically is a cloud based "recycle bin" which even a malicious admin can't touch.

We don't enjoy the overly complex nature of hundreds of  Veeam backup jobs and copy jobs.  It's a nightmare to monitor and maintain.

CommVault sounds much simpler.

I don't know anything about Zert0 other than it offers granular restores to the minute which could be super handy during a ransomware attack (assuming they don't successfully attack our backups).

I suppose the air-gapped-ness depends on the destination provider for both CommVault and Zert0.

Do these solutions typically rely on things like Amazon's Object Lock / Compliance Mode / WORM (write-once-read-many)?

A big requirement is MFA in order to delete backup containers; my nightmare scenario is my laptop getting hijacked and/or my admin credentials getting compromised and ransomware hacker attacking my cloud backups too !!!

In VMWare NSX, where do you define the destination for syslog output for firewall actions? I did this a couple of years ago in another environment and now I can't see it in the interface and I keep finding not precisely what I'm seeking googling. Thank you!
i took snap shot of 1 vm server through vmware console

i need to revet back , how should i do it
A new Vmware Esxi 6.7 U2, freshly installed. On this host, several few (three currently)  Windows 2012 standard server. That's the first Vmware Esxi 6.7 I use (U2 from april, not patched). The HP Proliant server is given to support this version.

One of the servers hosts an Oracle 11g, database.
I've Oracle connection loss and a network problem  could be the cause.

I'm not really sure (random symptoms), but it seems sometimes, from any host in the same Ip v4 subnetwork, the first ping requests (the first or the first 2 ou 3) fail with "request timed out" response. After that, all works fine. It seems to occur to all the virtual machines of this Esxi host.

I don't think this is a hardware problem (same switches are used with similar environments, except the VmWare version).

I've noticed too, with wireshark utility, on one of the VM client, some ICMP frames with the IPv4 address  of this client as souce and destination and a "destination unreachable (host unreachable)" message in the info column.

The VmWare clients are distributes on different Vswitches. Just one uplink to the physical switch for each vswitch.

Any idea?

There is a need to create on an external USB hardrive/or key, portable apps that would allow a user to check
their Office 365 email, and perhaps have access to the Office Suite from that portable device, or compatible programs.

The idea is if the users's computer crashed, they could plug in the USB External Drive/key, and keep working using many of the functions that was on the users
crashed desktop.    Almost like having a workable portable Virtual Machine that could be triggered shoudl the users's computer crash.

Is this possible in a Windows O/S Environment?

I have installed a QNAP TS-1283XU-RP server which backs up our virtual server using VEEAM and File servers using backup assist software.

This Qnap server is located on one of the COMS cabinet-1 that is away from the server room.

The switch in the Coms cabinet  is connected through a fibre optics cable connection  to the core switch in the server room.
The edge switch is 100/1 Gig switch

The Qnap server has 4x1GbE Lan ports . At the moment only one LAN port from the Qnap is connected  to the switch and on this LAN card gui network speed says 1Gbps.

If I connect another LAN port of the Qnap to the switch , will the data transfer speed increase ?

Please suggest and any help will be great
Veeam Backup 9.5 U4

Hello iam testing the new version ifrom Veeam Backup 9.5  want backup and restore singel vmware 6.7  hosts that work well but how veeam work? i dont fund a agent on the vm after backup.

So i plan to make vm default images so i need to deploy a veeam agent for backup in my  tamplate?

Thanks for Help

I have purchased a Qnap server QNAP TS-1283XU-RP 12 Bay  with 96TB (12 x 8TB Seagate EXOS enterprise class SATA HDD 7200RPM)

We are using VMware  and I would like to use this for onsite backup, for backing up our Virtual servers using Veeam backup and backing up user files using BackupAssist software with  this Qnap server as a backup target.

Please let me know the Raid type that i need to set up.
On this Qnap server , It gives me the Raid option of Raid5, Raid 6, Raid10

For Raid 5 With 1 hotspare, it gives a usable space of 72TB
For Raid 6 With 1 hotspare, it gives a usable space of 65TB

I dont want to go for Raid 10  and it ask for 2 spare and the usable space is only  36TB

I am not very keen on the performance of the qnap and it is only for the Veeam Back up target and File server Backup target.

Please suggest , the suitable Raid ( RAID5 or RAID6) that i can set up and your help much appreciated.

I'm setting up a bunch of servers virtually they will be connected to 2 separate virtual switches.  I don't want to have to connect/wire a bunch of Nic cards to make this work.  I need to attach the database server to switch1 & switch 2 so it can access the database.  I've enclosed a screen shot.  Is there a way to do this without physically hooking up 2 more nic cards?vmsetup.png

I have a Windows 2008 server HP physical server and I would like to virtualize this server.
We use VMware vSphere Client version

Please post me tutorials  as how to virtualize this server  and add this server to our  VCenter.

I am having a great deal of trouble in virtualizing a Windows 7 installation of a physical machine.  The machine is an Intel NUC Skull Canyon.  It has two NVMe drives.  One runs Windows 7, and the other runs Windows 10.  I was able to get the Windows 10 installation working on a VM (which is of no matter), but I can't seem to get Windows 7 to boot.  It will start loading Windows, but it reboots, and recommends running startup repair, which is not able to help.  Is there any hope of getting this going?  I really need to virtualize the PC because it is running software that I purchased, but the companies are no longer in business, and I don't have the setup files any longer.  They have dependencies and license files (or perhaps registry data) that need to be registered/put into place.  I have tried doing this with Disk2vhd as well as VMWare Converter Standalone, and using VirtualBox or VMWare. I am happy to use whichever product, as long as it will work properly.  Thanks in advance.
Good afternoon,

I've got a powered off VM, i'm migrating it to a single host in the same datacenter over a local network.

I've moved 4 other powered off VM's without issue.

This one errors after it hits 33%, there is nothing in the event log, it just says "Virtual machine relocation to a different host or datastore failed"

"Could not complete network copy for file /vmfs/volumes/54550e28-65c7c5d0-56e6-d89d672bfeec/EX21/EX21_2.vmdk" is anoher error, can't find anything on either of them though.

I'm doing a storage V-Motion for both datastore and host, source is 5.5 and destination is 6.5, I'm also moving from VMFS5 to VMFS6

I think it could be timing out but I'm not sure which log to check to verify.
