VMware is virtual machine software that provides a virtualized set of hardware (a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters) to the guest operating system. VMware virtual machines become highly portable between computers, because every host looks nearly identical to the guest. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a virtual machine guest, move or copy that guest to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. VMware's enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi are bare-metal embedded Hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.

I am looking to create a VMware virtual machine from a physical Windows XP 32 BIT machine.  The oldest version of VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.0 does not support WIndows XP 32 BIT.  Does anyone know of a way to create a VMware virtual machine from a physical Windows XP 32 BIT machine?

Hey Experts.  Another vSphere related conundrum.  Playing with vSAN.  I added a new host to the cluster and proceeded to add more disks to the vSan.   Of 8 drives (2 SSD and 4 SAS) two of them did not get added.  When I check the drive details the partitions are missing.  Via the CLI, if I try to format I get “GPT is located beyond the end of disk”.   I have tried dropping and reading in vSphere as well as vCenter.  I also deleted the virtual disks via the Dell pre-boot and added them back in with the same results.  Any suggestions?

Hi I am trying to setup a RocketRAID controller, its a 3740A.  I have three disks on it, and I created the raid 5 array, but it keeps saying it's not initialized.  Also I can't see the disk in the vmware installer.  I am familar with perc controllers, but not this rocket one.

I clicked on the manual on their site, but it comes up that can't be displayed.  The unit only came with a sheet to download the manual, but it is the same link as on the site.

http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/series_rr3740a-Download.htm

Question, how to I create a raid 5 array, or at least initialize it?

Thanks all.

I have used vCheck before found it fine, just wondering from a scripting point of view whats a good way to automate morning checks for say 40-50 customers

What are the options?

Any open source options available?

Much appreciated , would be great if someone had done something similar themselves and had first hand experience

Hi all,

I have a Server with 5Tb of disk (raid5), 2 x Xeon (8 cores per CPU) Processors and 80Gb of memory installed. Im thinking of installing VMWare on the box so I can install 4 windows hosts. Im looking for best way to acheive this and at the same time keep the licensing costs down. Is there a free or a cost effective path to getting this setup?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

We are replacing our virtual infrastructure  and  have procured Dell EMC ME4024 and PowerEdge R640 Server.
10x 1.8TB HDD 10K 512e SAS12 2.5
6x 1.92TB SSD SAS Read Intensive

We have hired an implementation engineer to setup this Storage.

Is it possible to set Tier at LUN levels ?

If this is possible, will it be a good idea to set up the First LUN  as SSD Tier , so that I can run SQL server application on it ( High performance application)
My SQL server VM size is 300Gb

And Second LUN as All Tier ( with Spinning disks) non-performance applications.

Also what raid levels i need to set up for the first LUN and second LUN?

Please suggest what is the best way of setting up this.

Any help and sugessions would be great!
Thanks

Vsphere 6.7 getting  "Concurrent-context attack vector vulnerability in Intel processors on brand new server"  Not seeing a lot of info on this one yet.  Thoughts/ideas? Is it important? Should and how to address, or way to disable and ignore

Hi

We are going to install new virtual infrastructure and the implementation engineer has asked me to create DNS entry for Forward lookup zone and Reverse lookup zone for the following servers.
VCenter server
ESXI-Host-01
ESXI-Host-02

Please post me tutorials to set up this on our Domain controller.

I have multiple snapshots that are showing up in my datastore in ESXI.  I cannot see them in Snapshot manager, nor when I query the snapshots via SSH command line.  I am having huge performance issues and I need to remove these snapshots ASAP.  I have tried creating a snapshot manually and then running delete all.  This does not work.  I am stuck.  Are there any recommendations on how I should proceed?

In vCenter Server, what would cause the Migrate link to be grayed out on a VM?  The migrate link for other VMs on this host are not grayed out.  It has no snapshots on it.
Just looked at the files in this VM's folder and I see a lck file from June 23rd for some reason.   This may be causing the issue.  ?

Am using the vSphere Web Client (Version 6.7.0.1150 Build 9433884) and pointing to a host running  ESXi, 6.7.0, 13981272.

Had a situation just resolved where a snapshot removal on this VM took almost 2 hours to remove; typically takes 1 minute.  The snapshot was about a gig in size.

Thanks!

In VMware, is there a way to emulate disk drives that reside in a canister that connects to the back of an ESXi Server?

We have some VMs on a 6.0 vSphere system that accesses a real canister of disk attached to an ESXi Server.  I think RDM is used. We do not have the canister and cannot obtain one or attach it to our ESXi Server

Is there a way to emulate the disk drive connection in VMware?

Possibly by using datastores, shared drives, or even a USB device (RDM) ?

thanks

We recently had a consultant come in and setup a XenDesktop 7.15 environment with Director server, Database server, 3 delivery controllers also running storefront to manage a number of virtual machines, all running on vmware.  Our mananger now wants to add XenApp into the mix to host applications.  Could anyone tell me what we need to add to our environment to add XenApp to our existing setup?

Thanks in advance.

We are having a random issue with some of our vms.
We are sending out image updates to all of the vms once a week which as part of this it sends out a reboot request.
aow most of the vms do the reboot but from time to time, we have random vms that instead of doing s reboot, they shutdown instead. Which then we have to manually turn them back on.
Is there something that I need to check for the vms for this issue not to occur?

I am using VMPlayer 15 to run a Windows 7 guest operating system on a Windows 10 PC.  I have been having problems with the guest OS lately that I can't explain.  The guest OS runs very slowly, there have been network connection issues, there have been problems using multiple monitors and most annoyingly, the mouse seems to randomly switch back to the host.  My "gut" is telling me that the guest is to big for the host.  When I say too big, I mean that the guest is configured so that it is more powerful than the host can handle.  I am not even sure if that is possible using VMPlayer.

Hello All;

OK. Power Outage due to storm today.
I was in the process of shutting down all the VM's when the battery backup shutdown.
I had the ARR, Web-01, and the Mail Server left to shut down, before the battery backup shutdown itself.

This is what all has happened since bringing everything back up then rebooting all VMs again.

#1: Network Load Balancer - Host Unknown for both Web-01 and Web-02 Servers.
Both hosts are pingable with their names and IP Addresses from the ARR server.
#2: Cannot access either of the servers from my laptop through Remote Desktop.
During the power outage, I was shutting down each VM with the Remote Desktop on my laptop.

I have
       Rebooted VMWare ESXi
       Rebooted each of the VM's
       Rebooted the Router

What am I missing?
Something has messed up somewhere due to this outage.
And I do not have a recent backup of the VM's, which is really not good at all.

Any and all assistance on this will be great.

In Vsphere 6.7 where on earth are the Advanced CPU HT Sharing:  Options!!!!  I have looked in both the HTML and Web client and cant find these options!

Here is a screenshot from Vsphere 5.0 console showing clearly where these options are located:
Edit VM
Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

I need these same options because I do not want to share any CPU with any other vm so I need to find this same option in Vsphere 6.7 and choose "None"

Thanks

vSphere Web Client. Device performance has deteriorated/ I/O latency increased. A couple minutes goes by and the performance improves. Hoping to understand the meaning of these more.

Hi, we have DellEMC VXRAIL VMware vSAN Cluster consist of 4 ESXi hosts. We are using vSAN iSCSI targets hooked up to Virtual Machines for Windows Server 2012 R2, Failover clustering. The cluster works fine after configuring.

However, when I run the cluster validation test, it fails with below error:

Two disks have been found on node SRVVDB01.domain.local that cannot be distinguished from one another. The disks involved have disk signature c10b5a63, SCSI page 83h VPD descriptor iqn.1998-01.com.vmware.52e5e355fe26a1cb-a80ef9982d7fc722,L,0x0000000000000000, SCSI page 80h VPD Serial Number VITSERIALbaebec5cee2b845f0bcde4434b5acd30. Please verify the storage configuration. You must either mask (unpresent, detach) one of these LUNs at this node, or, run validation and specify a disk list that includes only one of these disks, for example by using the Test-Cluster cmdlet in Windows PowerShell.

Please help !!

Hi,

I have an ESXi 5.1 server with just one virtual switch for management network, iSCSI traffic vs storage and VM connectivity.
Both physical NICs of this server  are connected to Cisco switch on access ports.

I noticed on my switch several messages like this:

%SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host xxxx in vlan 100 is flapping between port Gi0/9 and port Gi0/10
%SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host xxxx in vlan 100 is flapping between port Gi0/10 and port Gi0/9

I checked this URL:

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1012819

but I am not using neither Etherchannel nor Network failover detection with Beacon probing.
On virtual switch (ESXi) traffic shaping is configured with "Route based on source MAC hash", with both interfaces in Active, so I wouldn't expect flapping since VM's mac address are static.

How can I avoid flapping?
I think I could simply put one network interface in standby mode.. but I'd need to check how much traffic is on that link.
Thank you!

This is about the new virtualization using VMware with simplivity hyperconverge. My parent company is heading toward this direction, probably with HPE hardware solution. We are looking for 6-8 hosts implementation. Where can find more and further information about the technology?

Thanks in advance.

We currently have a 4 host cluster with all vswitches manually configured on each host.  We're trying to add a distributed vswitch to introduce to our datacenter to allow private vlans.  I'm going to be freeing up 2 physical adpaters on each host to contribute.  Is there any consequence doing this?

I'm also hoping Mr. A. Hancock has written a whitepaper on such a procedure and would be generous to share. :D

Our vCenter server is version 6.7.0 build 13007421 and our hosts are currently at version VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 13473784.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I understand how Windows 2016 core licensing works but what I'm not understanding are the 2 VM's explanation that come with Windows 2016 Standard Edition.

For example, I have 2 ESXi host with 2 processors in each. Each processor has 10 cores so 20 total cores for each server. I would need to purchase 32 core licenses for each host for a grand total of 64 core licensing to cover those ESXi severs.

If I decide to go with Windows Server 2016 Standard, how many VM's can I build with those 64 core licensing? My guess is 8.

Thank you,
