VMware is virtual machine software that provides a virtualized set of hardware (a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters) to the guest operating system. VMware virtual machines become highly portable between computers, because every host looks nearly identical to the guest. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a virtual machine guest, move or copy that guest to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. VMware's enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi are bare-metal embedded Hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.

Aloha,

I am beginning a VSphere 5.5 to 6.5 to 6.7 upgrade. Wondering about the VMWare Tools upgrade part.
Has anyone had success bundling the VMT upgrade with MS patching?

I am trying to set up a LAB where I am running multiple ESXI servers on a Dell poweredge 710. I got VMware workstation installed but the problem is getting the networking figured out. I have 8 network connections and manually mapped each card to a bridge adapter. I was trying to emulate a different network but this has failed miserably. In fact I cut it down to just bridged network "replicate physical network state". I am unable to get two connections that work. Adding to this what is weird is I have two hosts installed in VMware workstation. I can ping both of them but I can only access one of them via web page. I tried this while being directly connected to the server and it works. I do want to do this without being logged directly to the server. Any help would be appreciated. I was looking at doing this with hyper v or even Linux. Any suggestions?

What do I need to do to get them back to supported?
We did nothing to the host so not sure why this is occuring
I tried to upgrade them, but I get the error message VMware tools iso image does not exsist or is inaccessible

Impact of Restarting Management Agent on ESX host

I would like to know if  Restarting Management Agent on ESX host, will cause vMotion of VMs to another ESX Host.

Thank you

Hi guys

I'm looking for an environment outside of my work place that I can log in to to play around with Vmware along with setting up Windows infrastructures. So that I can set up a lab of my own. I know that AWS is one place, any other places?

Thanks for helping

It's been a while since I've had to troubleshoot vSwitch and physical switch issues so I'm a bit rusty. Our VMWare environment has two 10GbE switches stacked and each ESXi host two 10 GbE NIC ports, one to each switch. Both NICS are active inside the Teaming and Failover settings under the port group.

What I'm noticing is if I copy a file from one server to another I am not getting the full 10GBE. I know I won't use all of it but what I'm seeing is during the first few seconds on the file transfer it goes to about 600MBps, then it quickly goes down to less than GB speed (maybe around 50-60MBps.

VMWare tools is up to date on all the servers/ I'm not seeing any errors on the physical switched. I'm just not sure what other settings I need to check. Whether it's on the physical switch side, vSwitch side or VM itself.

I'm running Windows 2012 R2 for both servers sharing the files and transfering back and forth.

How do I update the IQN names on esxi 6.5?  I updated the name under storage adapters and tried via esxcli, but a reboot appears to revert my changes.  Any thoughts?

how can i remap an ESXi portgroup to a different vswitch without deleting+recreating the portgroup

from my experience, recreating a portgroup with the same name works but only after i delete and recreate or remap manually all of the corresponding guest's interfaces which is error prone, a pita, and will produce some downtime

this platform has no vcenter. i have easy access to the UI and ssh command line on the ESX, and i can use vcli if needed. my preferred way would be ssh.

hi guys,
Got a esxi 6.7 server
got virtual machine which is dc -server 2016std

time always runs 5 mins slow.
i checked the w32tm /query /status - it was synching from local cmos battery

i tried changing it to external ntp time sources, but still dc takes time from local cmos battery.  it never changed to external ntp server.
in esx server, under virtual machine - synchronise guest time with host is not enabled too.

used these commands:
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"0.aus.pool.ntp.org,0x1 1.aus.pool.ntp.org,0x1 2.aus.pool.ntp.org,0x1 3.aus.pool.ntp.org,0x1"   - to set ntp server

used this to reset time service to defualt :
net stop w32
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /register
net start w32time

tried restarting time server - net stop w32time && net start w32time

the client machines take time from DC .. but dc not taking time from external ntp.
what else could be the problem. how do i make it to take time from external source ? ? any help would be great.

2 Window 2012 R2 Data Center
Windows Print Server
Kemp Load Balancer.
VMware ESXI 6.5

The two Windows 2012 R2 Servers run Print Services.
On the Kemp I created the service to Load Balance the Print Servers.

I created a new Print server on each Server with the Name of the Service I created on Kemp TGCSPS-VIP

When I create the printers on the Print Server TGCSPS-VIP it also adds them to the default Print Server

Is there any one delete the default print server.  Only way I found is to uninstall Printer Server Role.

Can I create a Printer server using the Name of my Service from the Kemp?

I found this article to setup Print Server on a Kemp

Any ideas

Thanks

Normally to transplant a VM to different vCenter, I do Veeam bkup of the VM and transfer it over to new network and restore it from another Veeam server. But in case of this VM (old Win 2008 OS), Veeam gives error during restore: "invalid configuration for device '0'" and *.vmdk (disk) files are not restored at all.

In the source vCenter, it is possible to do vMotion of this VM, but I cannot do OVF export (times out) nor create a clone (Invalid configuration for device '13'). The VM runs fine.

How may I transplant this VM to new location? Thanks.

Hello Ee,

I was attempting to download a vmdk file to my pc for the purposes of importing into amazon web services. I realise in hindsight that i need to use the "Export as OVF" file menu option , it will not use the direct vmdk . Here is my current issue though ;

When i go to start back up the vm , I receive " the file specified is not a virtual disk " looking closely , it is not listing the file "type" as virtual disk , so something must have gotten corrupted. Is there a way to correct this ?

Hi All

We use "LSI Logic SAS" SCSI Controllers (SCSI Bus Sharing = Virtual) when deploying Windows MSCS/Failover Cluster.

However, this looks to mean that we cannot create a snapshot of the VM.

This is a problem for us as we wish to create snapshots for server level backups (we use Veeam).

Does anybody know a work around for this?

Thank you very much.

Need a good guide to Migrating Windows Server 2008 R2, VCenter Ver 6.5.0 10000 Build 6816762 to VCSA 6.5 U2c build 9451637

Is this even possible?  Would really appreciate any suggestions.

I am pretty green when it comes to VMware.  Quite a few years back, I had a consultant come in and help setup / configure some VMware hosts and the vSphere server running in a Windows 2012 server.  The hosts were setup running ESXi 5.5 using the stock image from VMware.

I am now in the process of trying to upgrade Vcenter and the ESXi hosts.  The two physical hosts are HP Proliant DL380p Gen8 servers.  It appears that that last version of VMware to support this hardware is 6.5 U2.  I believe that I was able to upgrade the vCenter server without any problems.  Now I am attempting to upgrade the hosts and have a few questions.

I noticed that on the VMware site that there is a 6.5 U2 HPE image for my hardware.  Should I use this HP image or should I stick with the stock VMware image?

Since this is mostly foreign to me, I have been trying to complete this upgrade over the last day or two.  I originally tried to upgrade the hosts using the stock VMware image and encountered an "incompatible" compliance status when scanning for updated against the attached baseline.  The status details stated:

"The upgrade contains the following set of conflicting VIBs:
Mellanox_bootbank_net-mlx4-en_1.9.9.0-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820

Remove the conflicting VIBs or use Image Builder to create a custom upgrade ISO image that contains the newer versions of the conflicting VIBs, and try to upgrade again."

At this point, I stopped and attempted to upgrade using the HPE image for my …

is it really Best practices and better, to use Thick Provisioned Virtual Disks on VM's that will be Microsoft SQL Servers?

Also is 6GB of memory too low for a virtual SQL Server?

I am asking these questions because in our current environment i am noticing alot of VM's that are SQL Servers with Very little ram and also noticiing the Virtual Disks are all Thin.

Our LUNs on the SAN side are all thick just an FYI.

From my understanding, i was told always use THICK for SQL, and i have never seen a sql server with only 6gb of ram.  I know there are ways to have SQL use less ram from within SQL itself.

Just want a confirmation on the best practices, and real life experience.

Thanks

Hi All

I am currently in the process of building a Windows 10 1803 image in both HyperV and VMware horizon. Our Office products are managed by KMC licensing.

I am wondering how to go about pulling down Office updates? due to the KMC licensing the update option that is normally present in a standard licensed version (home user) is no longer present.  When I run windows OS updates no office update come down either.

Usually we push our Office Update's down via SCCM but as this is a base image I want to have the office version as up to date as possible before we deploy the Windows 10 build to our users.  The SCCM client will not be on the base image as you are moving to inTune.

OS build Windows 10 1803 - Office 2016 Updates

Any advice would be greatly apricated.

Thanks

I have an environment of VMWare 6.5 hosts running on HP bl460c servers in a c7000 enclosure. All 16 servers have two vmnic's dedicated to iSCSI, and attached to a DS which is dedicated for storage traffic. These vmnic's are bound to vmk adapters which are in turn bound to the iSCSI software adapter on the host. The server nics are connected to Cisco switches via the passthrough interconnects on the enclosure.

For my storage device, I have a NetGear ReadyNAS 4312 with four 1Gb interfaces. I have configured these into dual bonded nics and both bonds are set with Layer 2 LACP modes and configured channel-groups on the Cisco switches. The bonds were assigned IPs, the vmks, were assigned IPs, and the software adapter was configured to discover the iSCSI LUN on the appropriate IP addresses.

During the original configuration, all MTUs in the path were at 1500. All 16 servers saw the storage and it was presented as a datastore to the cluster for which it was intended. All seemed well, but once the VMs were all running on the datastore, we began to have latency issues and significat lag when interacting with the VMs, whether by SSH or the console. As a test, I moved a couple of the trouble VMs to a different storage and the problems were eliminated. I knew that jumbo frames were supposed to be best practice for iSCSI but didn't want to shutdown the entire environment in order to configure and bounce all the switching but after these problems, and reading several papers on the …
