VMware is virtual machine software that provides a virtualized set of hardware (a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters) to the guest operating system. VMware virtual machines become highly portable between computers, because every host looks nearly identical to the guest. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a virtual machine guest, move or copy that guest to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. VMware's enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi are bare-metal embedded Hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.

We have our infra distributed and managed by 4 vCenter Server Appliance (6.5 U3)
Now we need to configure Linked mode among all of the vCSA or at least b/w 2 of any vCenters
Any approach if this can be done on running infra without reinstallation of vCSA  so that existing config will be remain same and we can manage VC in linked mode
What should be best approach with minimal risk and  valid fix without hampering our running infra /config @existing VC

I am trying to delete a .vmdk file that is no longer in use and vcenter will not let me delete it.  I have verified there is no VM with ties to this .vmdk file.

This is the message i get   "Deletion of file or directory [san-flmir-prod6] nsmsqldr01/nsmsqldr01-ctk.vmdk from san-flmir-prod6 was initiated from 'h5-client/6.5.0@127.0.0.1' and completed with status 'Failure'"

This is what i get every time i try to delete this folder.  I've also tried to delete the .vmdk file with the same message in event viewer.

I need to delete this file so i can unmount and remove the datastore and re add it as vmfs 6.

Please help,  Know anyway i can force its removal?

Hello,

I was told, when we first purchased a virtual environment and had our servers moved to virtual using VMware 6.7, that the VMs and HOSTS could be patched/updated without any outages for the users.

From what I am reading, the HOSTS can be patched without any outages if I move all the VMs (while they are running???) on 1 HOST to another.  Then I can patch the HOST that does not have any VMs attached???

Also, the 'patching/updating' the VM is actually the VMware Client Tools that can be updated while the VM is functioning???

Is this correct?
Is there any way that I can patch ...say.... a Windows 2016 virtual Operating System without any outage if the Microsoft OS patch requires a reboot?

hello,
i already installed now horizon view 7.8 on windows 2016 r2 datacenter, the vcenter is appliance v 6.7
i installed the vcompser v7 on separate server, and when i try to add the vcenter configuration in the administration console it was giving me an error (A connection problem occurred between Connection Server, View Composer, and vCenter Server. Check that all the services are running and the ports and URLs are entered correctly.) despite i use and privileged user and try many users for that but gave me same error. i decided to add the vcenter only it was added normally, when i try to edit in the settings and add the vcompser it gave me this error (error saving vcenter entry), i need to add the vcompser settings, so how can i fix that?

i used domain admin account also that has full permission in vcenter
thanks

I have configured the server to raid 5 all of the SSD disks in the server so in total there is 7tb available according to the config software. When I installed ESX6 (on a USB), it completes the install and I'm then able to log into the host via a browser. When I try and configure the datastore, it only sees the individual SSD disks and not the array. I can select any one of them but that is not what I'm after, I want the entire datastore to use all the disk. Im not able to select more than one of the disk so something is not right with the config of the HP onboard array interface.cleae test

The onboard controller is a Dynamic Smart Array b140i RAID

I have an HP Z2 workstation with 32 GB ram and a 6 cores I7 processor.
I would like to install esxi and to create 3 vms (windows 2016) on this workstation.
The first vm will be active directory with file sharing and the other 2 vms will be low demanding for applications.

I plan to add another Ethernet card and to add increase the ram. (Unfortunately i can't add a second cpu)

Do you think that configuration will be working properly ?

I setup a VMware ESXi host on a Dell server using the iDRAC port as the VMware management interface.  I used the VMware Dell 6.7 ESXi hypervisor.  I can connect to the hypervisor and both the SSH shell and the web management come up fine.  However, for some reason it will not allow me to load a guest OS.  The problem goes away if I use a standard NIC.  Using the iDRAC would be our preferred method in our environment.  Has anyone else ran into this issue?

Our domain servers are working on VMware Workstation virtual machine. Recently we decide to move them to ESXi 6.5 that's installed on DELL R720 and T30. But the problem is ESXi cannot manage RAID disks. I installed MegaRAID on ESXi, however it only can monitor status, and I can't find the function to schedule check and report disk status. I also bought a LSI SATA+SAS Host Bus Adapter with RAID Controller and install it on T30, but I still need to reboot then access RAID control page to create/change RAID.

Is there a program based on ESXI to let me manage, control RAID disks without shutdown ESXI? Or at least I need a program to check disk status and email me the check result.

Thank you very much for any suggestion.

I'm having what I consider to be a very strange behavior with Window Server 2019 file and folder permissions.  I've been moving lots of file shares around due to migrating a number of Windows 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 servers to Windows 2019. Although I don't think it's relevant, all the servers are VMs, and I'm migrating them from an ESXi 6.0 environment to ESXi 6.7. All the folders were set with the following permissions:  BuiltIn\Administrators - F, System - F, BuiltIn\Users (or a specific user group) - M.

The unexpected behavior is that the first time I opened any of these folders logged on as the domain administrator, I get the following popup:

Permission popup
If I click "continue" I get access to the folder, and the Administrator account is added to the ACL with Full Control.  I'm just confused as to why this would happen, when the domain admin account is already in the BuiltIn Administrators group and therefore should already have access.

I've administered some other Windows 2019 servers and I don't recall ever having this happen before. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? I'd love to hear any ideas as to why it might be happening in this environment when it didn't happen at other client sites.

I am looking to create a VMware virtual machine from a physical Windows XP 32 BIT machine.  The oldest version of VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.0 does not support WIndows XP 32 BIT.  Does anyone know of a way to create a VMware virtual machine from a physical Windows XP 32 BIT machine?

Hey Experts.  Another vSphere related conundrum.  Playing with vSAN.  I added a new host to the cluster and proceeded to add more disks to the vSan.   Of 8 drives (2 SSD and 4 SAS) two of them did not get added.  When I check the drive details the partitions are missing.  Via the CLI, if I try to format I get “GPT is located beyond the end of disk”.   I have tried dropping and reading in vSphere as well as vCenter.  I also deleted the virtual disks via the Dell pre-boot and added them back in with the same results.  Any suggestions?

Hi I am trying to setup a RocketRAID controller, its a 3740A.  I have three disks on it, and I created the raid 5 array, but it keeps saying it's not initialized.  Also I can't see the disk in the vmware installer.  I am familar with perc controllers, but not this rocket one.

I clicked on the manual on their site, but it comes up that can't be displayed.  The unit only came with a sheet to download the manual, but it is the same link as on the site.

http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/series_rr3740a-Download.htm

Question, how to I create a raid 5 array, or at least initialize it?

Thanks all.

I have used vCheck before found it fine, just wondering from a scripting point of view whats a good way to automate morning checks for say 40-50 customers

What are the options?

Any open source options available?

Much appreciated , would be great if someone had done something similar themselves and had first hand experience

Hi all,

I have a Server with 5Tb of disk (raid5), 2 x Xeon (8 cores per CPU) Processors and 80Gb of memory installed. Im thinking of installing VMWare on the box so I can install 4 windows hosts. Im looking for best way to acheive this and at the same time keep the licensing costs down. Is there a free or a cost effective path to getting this setup?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

We are replacing our virtual infrastructure  and  have procured Dell EMC ME4024 and PowerEdge R640 Server.
10x 1.8TB HDD 10K 512e SAS12 2.5
6x 1.92TB SSD SAS Read Intensive

We have hired an implementation engineer to setup this Storage.

Is it possible to set Tier at LUN levels ?

If this is possible, will it be a good idea to set up the First LUN  as SSD Tier , so that I can run SQL server application on it ( High performance application)
My SQL server VM size is 300Gb

And Second LUN as All Tier ( with Spinning disks) non-performance applications.

Also what raid levels i need to set up for the first LUN and second LUN?

Please suggest what is the best way of setting up this.

Any help and sugessions would be great!
Thanks

Vsphere 6.7 getting  "Concurrent-context attack vector vulnerability in Intel processors on brand new server"  Not seeing a lot of info on this one yet.  Thoughts/ideas? Is it important? Should and how to address, or way to disable and ignore

Hi

We are going to install new virtual infrastructure and the implementation engineer has asked me to create DNS entry for Forward lookup zone and Reverse lookup zone for the following servers.
VCenter server
ESXI-Host-01
ESXI-Host-02

Please post me tutorials to set up this on our Domain controller.

I have multiple snapshots that are showing up in my datastore in ESXI.  I cannot see them in Snapshot manager, nor when I query the snapshots via SSH command line.  I am having huge performance issues and I need to remove these snapshots ASAP.  I have tried creating a snapshot manually and then running delete all.  This does not work.  I am stuck.  Are there any recommendations on how I should proceed?

In vCenter Server, what would cause the Migrate link to be grayed out on a VM?  The migrate link for other VMs on this host are not grayed out.  It has no snapshots on it.
Just looked at the files in this VM's folder and I see a lck file from June 23rd for some reason.   This may be causing the issue.  ?

Am using the vSphere Web Client (Version 6.7.0.1150 Build 9433884) and pointing to a host running  ESXi, 6.7.0, 13981272.

Had a situation just resolved where a snapshot removal on this VM took almost 2 hours to remove; typically takes 1 minute.  The snapshot was about a gig in size.

Thanks!

In VMware, is there a way to emulate disk drives that reside in a canister that connects to the back of an ESXi Server?

We have some VMs on a 6.0 vSphere system that accesses a real canister of disk attached to an ESXi Server.  I think RDM is used. We do not have the canister and cannot obtain one or attach it to our ESXi Server

Is there a way to emulate the disk drive connection in VMware?

Possibly by using datastores, shared drives, or even a USB device (RDM) ?

thanks

We recently had a consultant come in and setup a XenDesktop 7.15 environment with Director server, Database server, 3 delivery controllers also running storefront to manage a number of virtual machines, all running on vmware.  Our mananger now wants to add XenApp into the mix to host applications.  Could anyone tell me what we need to add to our environment to add XenApp to our existing setup?

Thanks in advance.
