VMware is virtual machine software that provides a virtualized set of hardware (a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters) to the guest operating system. VMware virtual machines become highly portable between computers, because every host looks nearly identical to the guest. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a virtual machine guest, move or copy that guest to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. VMware's enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi are bare-metal embedded Hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.

Hello,

I’m running vSphere 6.7 and a VM which is my SCOM Server is having high CPU and I/O. How can I report performance on this server and attempt to isolate the service for which is pegging resources? How would an expert approach this scenario?

Thank you so much!

How do i attach a blank dvd (iso file) to a vsphere vm

I have a windows 10 vm and I want to make a repair disk. I tried to create a 0-byte file named file1.iso and using my vsphere 6.0 client, attached it to my Windows 10 VM. On the W10 "create a repair disk" panel I get the error:

The disk in the drive is not blank. You must erase the disk before you can use it.

Local DataStore and Shared DataStore

In Vmware Shared Datastore I see by default  3 folders (sdd.sf, vSphere HA which has a subfolder: FDM-xxxxx) , the FDM subfolder has 4 host-xx  files.
Any Expert to explain the role of those folders and files.

Local Datastore by dfault has only sdd.sf.  unless if you create VMs and Templates then they would show up like in my case below.
I would like to delete the folders but there is no option to delete folders, just individual files

Vspher HA issue

Vsphere Cluster and ESX hosts show red icon related the HA agent issue.  Initially I thought it was resolved by disconnecting/removing ESX hosts ,Disabling HA, then adding /Reconnecting ESX hosts and re-enabling HA,, but the ESX hosts for some reason were in maintenance mode, that's why the error was not showing up again. Now that I realized ESX hosts were in maintenance mode, I exited them from Maintenance mode, and the error showed up.
not sure what is causing that. Any help ?

ESXi hosts are showing red icons, though I was able to connect to them from VCenter.

Any idea why they show up a red icon ?

Hi, I noticed a couple of errors about vMotion events on my VMware ESXi Cluster (mostly 6.7, two hosts have 6.0).
Apparently, two VMs weren't able to migrate due to "the vMotion failed because the destination hsot did not receive any data from the source host on the vMotion network".
I checked all ports of my host in the vMotion VLAN, and they are up&running on Cisco switches.
It seems that just ONE host isn't able to vmkping other hosts on vMotion VLAN.
I confirm that affected host HAS his IP address, and it is able to vmkping itself.
From other hosts, I have no arp for this host (checked with esxcli network ip  neighbor list | grep IP_OF_ISOLATED_HOST).

How can I troubleshoot this?
Thank you!

I was reviewing the network setup UCS->Nexus9k->Storage Array. The 10G interfaces on the storage array are setup for 9000 byte MTUs and the Nexus 9k is setup for jumbo frame. But the UCS NIC and VMWare VMNICs are setup for 1500byte frames. This is iSCSI traffic. It all seems to work fine.

I was wondering in this instance what is preventing the storage array from sending 9k frames to UCS/Vmware? Or is it likely sending 9k frames in response to the initiators and the UCS is fragmenting them down to 1500 byte frames? Is there some kind of negotiation between end systems in scenario?

Hello,

We have VMware ESXi 6.7 Update 2 installed in HP Gen 9 server, that contains a virtual machine, with enough hardware resources (CPU/RAM...). But this virtual machine reboots spontaneously/unexpectedly and does not have any operating system error. Which means it might be a VMware problem regarding that virtual machine.
I precize, we do not have any HA or FT configured. Just a vCenter that manages couple of standalone hosts (no cluster).

In the operating system of that VM which is Windows Server 2016, i just find error messages (6008: unexpected restarts).
Which means the it might be a hypervisor problem.. for that, i tried to migrate that vm to another Host, but always same problem, unexpected restarts...

When i tried to see virtual machine logs, i did not find anything valuable that might help (vmware.log). And same thing in vmkernel.log or vmkwarning.log.. (vm name is VM01)
I wonder where i should look too. any idea please?
Thank you in advance,
vmware.log
vmkwarning.log

I would like help with VMWare Powercli syntax.
I must use Get-view command, in a script.

$VM=Get-View -ViewType VirtualMachine -Filter @{'Name'="SERVER"}
$VM_name=$VM.name
$VM_name

Here is the result:
SERVER
SERVERTEST

But How which syntax can I use behind "-Filter" to have  the server whose name is exactly "SERVER" ?

I thank you.

Hello All;

I was adding another VM in ESXi when I lost connection to it.
Looking over at the server, I noticed all the lights were off of the hard drives, except for 1 drive.
Which would be, I THINK, the 2nd drive. I really did not pay much attention to it, once I noticed the other lights were off.
I brought open the Remote Management console and shut down the server, and then booted it back up.
Going into the Adaptec 6805T Config properties, then into Manage Arrays.
The below screenshot is what I am looking at.
Adaptec 6805T Rebuilding RAID 5
The question(s) I have is as follows.
Q1: The grayed out drive, is this the drive that could potentially be bad?
Q2: They are out of sync in following the regular number pattern. (00,01,02,03)

When I connected the cables to the board. I connected like so.
1 - First (Top first drive)
2 - Second
3 - Third
4 - forth (the bottom drive of the second row, not really sure why I did that for?)
(I removed the cover and checked my cables and they are in fact connected as described above)

The rebuilding % went pretty quickly from 1 to 7, in about 10 minutes.
However, it has been on 7% for about, 10 minutes on its own. Which kind of worries me.
So, it might be that the greyed out drive is in fact bad.
Which in that case, I have two spares, I can replace it with.
I just need some guidance on this one.
Which drive would I remove from the tray and replace it?
And should I shut down the server first, or, keep it on, while it is …

Suppose you were a home user with a VMWare Horizon client for accessing your work virtual desktop. You have an HP printer scanner and you want to print via a print server at the data center. If you setup a port at the work firewall - would it be possible to configure a printer to register with the file server with authentication? The net result being that the home user logins into their VDI and prints to their home printer via the print server in the data center.

Is that possible and done all the time? I have small offices with lan to lan VPN and that's easy to just enter the IP of the destination printer.

Hi,

How can we migrate VMware servers from VCenter to MS Azure?

Which tools can be used?

Expert out there, I need your help on improving disk latency on a VM.
We have a VM with eight disks that are configured with LSI logic scsi controller with 10 cores vcpu. The backend storage is Dell EMC VNX.
The software vendor ran a simulation and found that the server has disk latency. I was asked to tune the server.
He mentioned that the latency is at 64 KrW and 64KrR and it has to be below 10Ms vs 20Ms.
What would you advise me to do in this case?
We have VMware 6.7 and Dell R730 Esxi hosts in the cluster.

HA Admission Control and Resource Reservation

If I understand when you enable Host Monitoring in HA and specify a number of Host you tolerate to fail.  Vmware does its own calculation to Reserve an amount of resources for VMs to function in case the specified number of Hosts fail at the same time.

I would like to know if Vmware calculation  takes into account the VMs or Resources Pools Shares, Reservations , limits that have already been set up.

Thank you

I am building an Oracle Virtual Box VM on a laptop.  I have set the storage on the hard drive to 32 GB fixed.  I run through the install to the reboot.  When it comes back up it wants to reinstall CentOS 8 again and in the Installation Destination window the disc is still 32 GB but only about 1 MB is available.  What am I doing wrong? I follow the book and videos to a  tee but no beans.  And why do I need to reinstall CentOS?  I have set up VMs in VMWare just fine.  I am new to Virtual Box.  Can you help?  thanks.
