This article will show you how to create an ISO CD-ROM/DVD-ROM image (*.iso), and MD5 checksum signature, for use with VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.5 (ESXi 6.5). It's a good idea to compare checksums, because many installations fail because of a corrupt iso image.

Veeam Backup & Replication has added a new integration – Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365.  In this blog, we will discuss how you can benefit from Office 365 email backup with the Veeam’s new product and try to shed some light on the needs and use cases of email backups.

Will try to explain how to use the VMware feature TAGs in the VMs and create Veeam Backup Jobs using TAGs. Since this article is too long, I will create second article for the Veeam tasks.

This is an issue that we can get adding / removing permissions in the vCSA 6.0. We can also have issues searching for users / groups in the AD (using your identify sources). This is how one of the ways to handle this issues and fix it.

It Is not possible to enable LLDP in vSwitch(at least is not supported by VMware), so in this article we will enable this, and also go trough how to enabled CDP and how to get this information in vSwitches and also in vDS.

Hi,

I have more articles waiting to be approved.

I will change the images, but this "new" tool to write articles is not very good.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your message.  I'll flesh it out a bit and then submit it again.

I have a related question:  If I have a topic/article/post that I only want to post to the Paessler Topics page, does it still go through independent review?  I tagged "paessler" on several articles, but haven't been asked to review or approve them.  Who decides what can appear on our topics page?

(um, to avoid confusion, yes, I'd like to post this article to several topics, after it meets the requirements for an article.  My question is more a hypothetical one, in case I have things to post only to the Paessler topics page at some point).

Thanks for your help!

Kimberley

Deduplication
VM backup deduplication is a method of reducing the amount of storage space needed to save VM backups. In most organizations, VMs contain many duplicate copies of data, such as VMs deployed from the same template, VMs with the same OS, or VMs that have some (semi) identical files (database entries,

Hello, ITSystemEngineer.

The most of this integration is already done. We're just waiting for QNAP team to fully migrate their QTS to 64-bit architecture. According to QNAP, the migration should happen with the next QTS release.

Best regards.

VMware Update Manager(VUM) “error code: 15” during ESXi 6.0 Remediate update in VUM operation

This is similar to the error described in my previous Article, but with a different source problem and a different solution. When trying to scan and stage the ESXi 6.0 updates using VMware Update Manager, we can get "error code 90"

For Backups Guest OS files and indexing(and application awareness), Veeam needs Admin rights in Guest OS(Windows and Linux). In Windows a Domain Administrator account, and in Linux root access to perform this type of Backups and also Restore.

VM backups can be lost due to a number of reasons: accidental backup deletion, backup file corruption, disk failure, lost or stolen hardware, malicious attack, or due to some other undesired and unpredicted event. Thus, having more than one copy of your business-critical VM backups...

Why should I virtualize? It’s a question that’s asked often enough. My response is usually “Why SHOULDN’T you virtualize?”

Replication of VMs between sites can take a lot of network bandwidth, so I need to know which VMs have high data change rates before I agree to support them using SRM.  I discovered I can measure disk data change rates on my VMware VMs using a PowerShell script.

Lets start to have a small explanation what is VAAI(vStorage API for Array Integration ) and what are the benefits using it.

VAAI is an API framework in VMware that enable some Storage tasks. It first presented in ESXi 4.1, but only after 5.x supports hardware acceleration with NAS storage devices.
Allows certain I/O operations to be offloaded from the ESXi to the physical array. With VAAI we release the workload on the virtual server hardware. Enables certain storage tasks, such as thin provisioning, to be offloaded from the VMware server virtualization hardware to the storage array.

You can read more about VAAI in VMware HERE

Our first tasks will be in the NetApp so that we can prepare the system to use VAAI in VMware.

Install NetApp VAAI plugin VIB in NetApp

Login to you your NetApp console:

First check if nfs.vstorage in enabled. If not, enable

Commands:
# options nfs.vstorage.enable
# vfiler run vfiler_name options nfs.vstorage.enable
Screen-2BShot-2B01-16-16-2Bat-2B05.2.PNG

In our case(7-Mode CLI) was disable/off, so we will enable.

In 7-Mode CLI
# options nfs.vstorage.enable on
In Clustered Data ONTAP CLI
# vserver nfs modify –vserver vserver_name -vstorage enabled
Note: vserver_name is the name of your SVM

Active also for vfiler 7-Mode CLI in the vFiler
# vfiler run vfile_name options nfs.vstorage.enable on
Note: vfile_name is the name of your vfiler. In our case is vfiler0

First I will try to share a design of a Veeam Backup Infrastructure without Direct NFS Access backup.

Veeam-Backup-no-NFS.jpg
Note: Direct NFS Access backup transport mechanism is only available in Veeam v9

In above I try to design the Veeam Backup flow between iSCSI vs NFS.

In this case we did not had the proper configuration so that Direct NFS Access backup transport mechanism could work.

In this case we have a Veeam Backup Server and a Veeam Backup proxy.

Actual Veeam Backup Infrastructure:

192.100.27.x is iSCSI subnet - vLAN 56
192.128.23.x is the NFS Subnet vLAN 55

192.168.6.x(vLAN 25) is Management subnet. Used by Veeam Backup Server, vCenter and most of our ESXi hosts. But we still have some ESXi hosts that use our old management subnet 192.168.68.x
This is why we build a new Proxy with this subnet 192.68.68.x(vLAN 29)

Veeam Server I have(physical server):

1 interface(is 2 with NIC Teaming) for 192.168.6.x for Management Network.
1 Interface(also 2 with NIC Teaming) for 192.168.27.x using iSCSI initiator for the iSCSI connections.

Veeam Proxy(Virtual Machine):
1 interface with 192.168.68.x (vLAN 29) for Management Network.

This was the initial configuration and where Veeam Backup Server and Proxy never use the Direct NFS Access backup transport mechanism. All backups were running always with the option [nbd] for network block device (or network) mode, [hotadd] for virtual appliance mode.

Future Veeam Backup Infrastructure:

Hi,

Mounting NFS in a Windows Server is outside of Veeam. Is not Veeam related task.

This is just adding/mounting a NFS Share into a Windows Server. That you should configure in your NAS and then mount in the Windows. Then you can use as a Veeam Backup Repository
