VMware is virtual machine software that provides a virtualized set of hardware (a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters) to the guest operating system. VMware virtual machines become highly portable between computers, because every host looks nearly identical to the guest. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a virtual machine guest, move or copy that guest to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. VMware's enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi are bare-metal embedded Hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.

I've just loaded ESXI 6.7 and configured a server.  I can't login becuase it's not responding to my keyboard or mouse.  I can't install the tools because I can't get into the server. It's server 2019

Hi,

I'd need a jumpstart for creating a domain joined W10 VM on VMWare VSphere, using Powershell.
I have a VM which was domain joined (meanwhile lost its domain trust, but that shouldn't matter I guess?), then  I used following lines

New-OSCustomizationSpec -Name $OSCustSpecName -FullName $OsCustSpecFullname -OrgName $OrgName `
-OSType Windows -ChangeSid -AdminPassword (Read-Host -AsSecureString) -Domain $Domain -DomainCredentials (Get-Credential)
#########
$OSSpecs = Get-OSCustomizationSpec -Name $OSCustSpecName
$VMTemplate = Get-Template -Name $VMTemplateName
#########

New-VM -Name $VMName -Template $VMTemplate -OSCustomizationSpec $OSSpec -ResourcePool $Resourcepool

Looks fine but just don't have much time, needs to work flawlessly and don't want reinvent warm water and going through mistakes.$
Please advise (f.e. it is a machine which will be reverted continuously to troubleshoot installs, should I set -autologon to 999999, will the KMS be contacted automtically or do I need to configure stuff, isn't there a sysprep needed or does a clone do the work etc).

All input really welcome!

J.

!! UPDATE: the VM was created succesfully, but obviously the domain join was not done, the trust with the domain is still gone, how do I achieve this (domain joined vm)?

When I add a new blade to a UCS chassis the server profile from a template has it create six vNICs - two for mgt, two for iSCSI, two for data. They are numbered 0 through 5. And so it is also on the VMWare side where VMNICs are numbered 0 to 5. But the last time I turned the newly registered server over to the VMWare admins the VMNICs 0 through 5 had the mac addresses all jumbled up. What was 1 in UCS might be 4 in VMWare, 2 might align with  3 and so on. My question is - what mechanism determines which NIC as defined by its mac address is associated with what sequence number in VMWare. Is it just a matter of how the VMW engineer selects the NICs for attachment to the VM? Do they all come in at once and VMW just decides the sequence number of each? Inquiring minds want to know!

At my work place - I regularly see messages like this in Solar Winds warning of latency between ESXi hosts and their data store. I have no idea why 20ms is chosen as the warning level. And I'm not sure exactly what type of latency is being referred to in this context. With ICMP I'm familiar with RTT time. But I imaging this is a different measurement. Does anyone know how vSphere measures "latency" from an ESX to its datastore? From a VM to its datastore? Thank you.

"NetPerfMon Event Log : The total latency between a san-server-01.acmeloans.com and a datastore is above 20 ms." action was executed successfully

I have seen a few discussions about LSI Logic SAS Controller and paravirtual iscsi controller.
We have several VMs with LSI Logic SAS Controller and they are running without an issue, I am not sure whether it is necessary to change or not. I was asked to add a few disks to our Exchange server which is running with LSI Logic SAS Controller, I am thinking of adding a paravirtual iscsi controller (iscsi 2, 0)for new disks.
Experts out there, is it recommended to keep both LSI Logic SAS Controller(iscsi 1,0) and paravirtual iscsi controller (iscsi,2,0) on one server?
or Should I stay with the LSI controller or change all to paravirtual do not run with both?

Experts out there, I have to install a windows 2016 server for SQL apps. I was asked to assign 8 vCPUs to the server.
I do not know the link which I am following is outdated
https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2013/10/does-corespersocket-affect-performance.html
What is the best practice?
1. 1 Socketx * Cores
2. 2x 4Cores
3. 4X 2Cores
I came across with another link, t looks like 1 Socket with 8- Cores,
https://itnext.io/vmware-vsphere-why-checking-numa-configuration-is-so-important-9764c16a7e73hat is the best option?
What is the best practice?

Vmware Host Profile purpose

If  I understand Host Profile is used for instance to configure one ESXi Host then create a profile from it , then attach other ESXi hosts to that profile.
It sounds  good, but I believe it can create a lot of issues, because Hosts  have different IP addresses,  vswitches, Vmkernel ports IP addresses, different storages... just to name few....

My point is, if you try to create Host profile as a shortcut, so that you do not repeat the same configuration for each ESX Hosts, you will end in more work tweaking the profile, and you are more likely to break things when you attach other ESX hosts to the profile.
So More Risks than Benefits

is that correct ?

Thank you

Vsphere command line Groups.

I would like to know how many command groups are used in Vsphere. For instance Powercli by itself has many commands and scripts.
ESXCLI has many commands also. Probably there are other Groups I do not know about and  that have many commands and their umbrellas.

So, I need to know which Groups of commands used in Vsphere environment (used with ESX hosts, Vcenter), and whether I can use just one of them, for instance Powercli group, and this will cover all I need to get information, set up new settings, Troubleshoot anything about Vsphere.

Thank you

I recently had to upgrade my MacBook Pro to Catalina, but in the process, it appears VMWare Fusion was impacted.  Now, when I started up my VM guests, they do load, but they load with a black screen.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

We have a test and dev standalone ESXi host at 6.5 U1 (build 5969303)
Only 6.5 is cleared to tun on this system and will be working to allow 6.7.

I want to move to build 6.5   (15256549)

If i recall, i can use esxcli to update the host with ESXi650-201912002 to move it to the latest release which includes all past updates and patches?

thanks

Hello, I have two ESXi hosts that are each running a VM. I am accessing the hosts using the vSphere Client 5.5.0. These VMs are able to reach other nodes on the network, but they are not able to talk to each other. Would someone please help me to configure the networking, so these VMs can communicate with each other?

Few Queries Regarding  Physical Memory Configuration on Virtual infra running with  vSphere 6.7

Is it justified to use  Maximum allowed Physical  Memory on any Hardware Like We have Dell M630 running with 512 GB RAM while it can be enhanced Up to 1.5TB (24 DIMM slots): 4GB/8GB/16GB/32GB/64GB DDR4 up to 2400MT/s

What should be best practice to follow here by increasing resources Like RAM/CPU or if to add more Servers  with std configuration ?

What if We need to extract Slot wise memory Detail ?

When Using smbiosDump  running individually on Esxi using SSH but not to get the same from multiple Esxi?

Tried to setup some function using script given below..

https://psvmware.wordpress.com/tag/powercli-check-memory-dimms-for-esxi/

But when trying to run giving error like...
New-CimSession : The connection to the specified remote host was refused. Verify that the WS-Management service is
running on the remote host and configured to listen for requests on the correct port and HTTP URL

Need to fetch my existing /memory config /slot wise and best pretcie to use the Server with best available performance

Tried to locate the Hardware and Health tab form VC/Host Webclient [HTML5]..seems it is depreciated now in 6.7?

Please help to locate the required detail from multiple Host/Physical Boxes

We are testing VMware 9.8 and have  DEM set to run as a GP extension.  We are testing folder redirection right now which is working perfectly, but have noticed that map drives created by users are not coming back at next login.

Thoughts?

I removed from inventory two ESXi 6.7 hosts that I did a clean rebuild on from ISO. Same one we've been using for all our other sites. Only this time, the vCenter kicks up an error trying to add them. I confirmed DNS, time and domain name are all good to go.

A general system error occurred. SSL Exception: The remote host certificate has has these problems. Unable to get local issuer certificate.

It seems as this would be a vCenter issue as these are clean rebuilds.

Thanks in advance

Deploy Many VMs from Template.

If we have a VM template and we need to deploy many VMs from that Template, is there a way to do that automatically instead of  manually repeating deploy from template many times.?

Thank you

We use VMware ESXi  host with Windows-10 pro Virtual mchines running on this
Users have access to the Virtual Windows-10 set by RDP connection

One problem,  some user have hardware attached to their own pc (also  WIndows-10) by either Real Rs232 comports
or by using Startech a USB to RS232 DB9 Serial Adapter  creating a COMx  port

Communication with serial devices like Barcode scanners or  Weight-scale go fine on the USB to RS232 DB9 Serial Adapter ports

But!   software running on the Vmware machine has no access to these ports

Thus, looking for solution how to make it possible to ""see""  those ports on a Vmware station
