VMware is virtual machine software that provides a virtualized set of hardware (a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters) to the guest operating system. VMware virtual machines become highly portable between computers, because every host looks nearly identical to the guest. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a virtual machine guest, move or copy that guest to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. VMware's enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi are bare-metal embedded Hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.

Step 5.5 of https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/143381-windows-sandbox-how-configure-windows-10-a.html shows how to do a FRESH install Google Chrome each time I start my Windows Sandbox.

Does anyone have a QUICK way to load a "SANDBOX" without having to reinstall the software I want on my "SANDBOX" each time I am scanning a file for viruses/etc ?

Example
 1. start "SANDBOX"
 2. scan file via Symantec AntiVirus installed on "SANDBOX"
 3. if Symantec does not find a virus, then open Word/Excel/etc file on "SANDBOX"

Connecting ESX Hosts to Storage

Let's take example of ISCSI storage.  from ESX side, we need to create at least 2 Vmkernel ports if we we are doing Multipathing , so it will 2 IP addresses.
Now if we have 100 ESX hosts, then it will be 200 vMkernel ports ,200 Network Adapters so 200 IP addresses.

I am assuming the Storage will not have 200 Physical Adapters to receive 200 connections.

Probably there will be a either L3 Switch with VLANs  between ESX Hosts and Storage or L2 Switch with VLANs connected to a Router the router connected to another Switch which is connected to the Storage.

This is my guess, I would like to have an Expert explain this case.

For Fiber Channel , I believe all ESX hosts will connect to FC Switch and FC Switch will connect to Storage.

Any clarifications will be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Can you please let me know what tools or means or how to check below.

Check the health of all Hosts and VM objects in vCenter.  Are there any active alarms in vCenter?

Are all vCenter plug-ins functioning properly?

If any Host Hardware issues?  Alarms, bad memory, power supply or capacity issues?

if  any resource bottlenecks?  Memory, CPU, Disk, Network?
 is the load properly distributed?
if running out of resources anywhere?  LUNs with low disk space, etc.
Check for Firmware updates on Host hardware- can we  use update manager

Check for ESX Patches
Check for VM Patches
Check VMware Tools version
Run scripts to identify the existence of VMs with snapshots and follow up to see if they are still needed.
Have you schmoozed with your Storage Admins lately?  A good idea since you cannot get very far without them.

DNS Suffix in ESX Host

I would like to know the benefit of setting the DNS suffix in ESX Host DUCI.
Let's say I have DNS server and I have entered the A and PTR records, and the name resolution is just good.
Why do I need to type in the DNS suffix in ESX Host DUCI ?

Reset  password for Administrator@Vsphere.local

I have looked at this link below:
https://www.provirtualzone.com/vcenter-5-x6-x-how-to-reset-administratorvsphere-local-account-password/

it talks about resetting the Administrator password, however the tool that they are talking about does not exist in Vcenter 6.7
I know that  the account Administrator@Vsphere.local gets created when we first time install Vcenter. but what if we forgot the password or we just need to reset it. I do not think this account is in Active Directory nor in the Local Windows server.

Any idea ?

Hello,

I am upgrading my vcenter from 6 to 6.5.  The database is on an external SQL server.

I am getting the attached error.  ODBC test between the vcenter server and database server is fine.

I am check out this link http://iamoracleadmin.blogspot.com/2017/03/vc65-db-lock-has-been-detected-on.html but I am not sure now to identify the opened session and kill it.

I am not sure if I should post this to the vmware team or SQL team so I am posting it on both.

Anyone who knows how to fix it please advise.

Many thanks.

Hi,

I can no longer access my VMware vcenter inventory. When I log into the web client, I see this message:

Could not connect to one or more vCenter Server systems:
https://server name:443/sdk

If I try to connect using the vSphere client I get the attached message.

I can login to the Microsoft Server with the vcenter server, and I can SSH to alle the ESXi servers but not the vSphere server.

I'm running an older VMware version 5.1.0 Build 1115182.

How can I fix this?

Thanks,
Ronnie

Traffic Shaping Impact

If I have one standard switch with 2 VM Port groups

VM Port Group1 has traffic shaping policy applied to it
VM port Group 2 does not have Traffic Shaping policy

VM port Group 1 has 2 VMs in it , now if one VM from PG1 communicates with a VM in PG2, I believe the Traffic shaping policy will apply, but if one VM from PG1 communicates with the other VM in the same PG1, I do not think Traffic shaping policy will apply..

The same for VM in PG2 if it communicates with a VM in PG1 the Traffic Shaping policy will not apply, because it is an inboud traffic for PG1, but when a VM from PG1 replies to a VM in PG2 Traffic shaping will apply.

Correct ?

Add VM to Vsphere Client 6.7 and install OS

I have Small Damn Linux ISO on my PC where I installed VMware Workstation.
I have installed Vcenter on Vmware Workstation and have opened Vsphere Client from within Vcenter, I created new VM, but I want to point the CD  to the ISO image on my PC.
Not sure which option in the screenshot below should I select, because neither of them will allow me to browse to the location of the ISO image.

Please suggest a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Platform

Please suggest a few good brands I should consider...

I expect to use Windows 10 and the .NET Framework set of Dev Tools.

I need a VDI for some development work and expect to also have some offshore developers also help. I presume one VDI per developer.

Make any sense? (This only MAY work with free Open Source software)

Anyway, I need some good branding VDI options. Free is better, but key features may make a small fee worth it.

Vmotion vMKernel port

in a standard switch we can configure vMkernel for vMotion, this,  I believe should  have an IP address assigned to it, let's say 192.168.1.15
Now if in every ESX host in the cluster I need to configure vMkernel port which is recommended, then should all vMkernel ports be in the same  VLAN ?

Vmware Link State Only Vs Beacon Probe

I have done some reading about Vmware Link State Only Vs Beacon Probe.
Not sure about the difference from Vmware administrator perspective, since if there is a failure somewhere in the Network then it does not matter which detection option you have used.
it states that to use Beacon, it is recommended to have 3 or more physical Nics
Any clarification on this topic ?

MTU change on vSwitch

If I need to change MTU on vSwitch to 2000 Bytes , then should I have to change it for the same size on Every VM Port group and every VMKernel?
For instance on vSwitch, I have VM Portgroups on VLAN 10,20,30, VMKernel  Management in VLAN 40, MKernel for vMotion in VLAN 50 , VMKernel for Storage in VLAN 60

Vmware Thin/Thick Lazy and Eager

in Vmware Disk types, we have :

Thin: Allocate and zero on first write
Thick Lazy: Allocate in advance and zero on first write
Thick Eager: Allocate and zero in advance

that was what has been explained on the web.

What I do not understand is the term "ZERO"  used by Vmware.
Do they mean delete any previous existing Data  from the Disk ? if So , then I believe that 's obvious and should be automatic, when you assign a new virtual disk to a VM it should be formatted and have all data on it deleted....
Sometimes, you need to allocate existing Disk to a VM, in this case your intent is that the Data should stay on the disk.. and if you want to delete it then you can format the disk..

Any clarifications ?

VMware 6.5

I had my vCenter VCSA crash the other night and still can not get it to work.

It was a HA setup and both passive and peer nodes went down.

I shutdown all three Passive peer and witness  started one at a time and found out that on the passive VCSA I lost the primary network adapter.

I found that the network adapter is not set.   I assigned static ip addresses I tried DHCP but the ip address does not stay

I logged onto the VCSA and ran this

ifconfig

/opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_config_net

  Main Menu wiil
appear

Select option for
network adapter,

I set the adapter to the ip address

I now cannot bring up vcenter at all.

 VCSA

I then decided to create a new VCSA appliance and that worked for a while.  I updated the VCSA and after the update I can not access vcenter at all

Any ideas or suggestions?
