Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone service. The term specifically refers to the provisioning of communications services (voice, fax, SMS, voice-messaging) over the public Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN).  Examples of the VoIP protocols are H.323, Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), H.248 (also known as Media Gateway Control (Megaco)), Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP), Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP), Session Description Protocol (SDP), and Inter-Asterisk eXchange (IAX).

I dont want to install skype on windows store as an app

For years on windows I have been trying skype click to call
On some computers it works for a small amount of time

Now I want to give up and stop trying. Takes too much time. I have been trying for years. I dont want to uninstall browsers/skype and restart my computer for hours just to make 5 phone calls

click to call skype on firefox does not work

but now I am stuck with something that is worse

I can click on phone number to activate skype but skype does not make phone call. Skype opens and does not do anything.


+1 phone number that I can not highlight is worse than what I started with.

CONTEXT:  We have all layer-3 switches.  At present, we are only concerned about VoIP and VIDEO QoS.  We believe configuration simplicity outweighs complexity if complexity is not needed to meet our needs and wants

QUESTION:  What is better QoS: DSCP or IPP ?  Why?

I have a Cisco UCM voip system that I am admittedly a rookie at.  We recently went through a reorganization of equipment and six of our fax machines were moved to different locations within the building.  We were trying to get off POTS lines anyway so we decided to purchase Cisco ATA 190 devices so that our Ricoh MFP devices could participate on the digital phone system.  These installed just fine and have worked fine, or so we thought.  After being on them for a month or two I am getting a lot more help desk calls stating that incoming faxes are taking forever or failing altogether.  For example, I have a site that faxes here quite often.  When they fax it will often times take 20 minutes to receive a fax from them successfully when the fax machine here isn't busy doing anything else and the other side is not busy either.  In another instance, I had a different facility report that they could not fax to us.  I happened to have the speaker turned on in that Ricoh MFP and I could hear it pick up and try to negotiate and then it would drop the call.  The process would repeat dozens of times and then a fax would finally come through.

I am curious if there are any settings in the ATA 190 that I need to tweak or if there is something that needs to be tweaked in Cisco UCM for the device?  Nothing in the interface on the ATA 190 sticks out at me and I don't even see a setting to lower the baud rate.  I did set up the ATA to send debug messages to a syslog server so maybe that …

Just got a general question. When I walk into a environment, how do I find the phones are whether digital or analog ? Any way to find by looking at into phones ?
If phones has Ethernet cable , they are ip Phones. Like wise how do I differentiate between analog/ digital ?
What is sip trunk ?

We're being told that shoretel 14.2 will be EoL in the near future.  We're also being told that we will have to pay for the upgrade to connect.  Is this correct?  We have maintenance with shoretel and the supplier...
Also what issues are people experiencing with it?  I read that new communicator is pants..?

We are a VOIP startup based in Singapore and need some advisory in this front. We plan to offer services to two different segments ;

1.      Residential voip – essentially to people who want to call out locally and to foreign destinations. Primary objective is to provide international calling capability to foreigners residing in Singapore at low rates (usually 1 cent per minute for calls to popular destinations) in contrast to high rates charged by local telcos.

2.      Business VOIP / PBX / SIP : essentially to a business (which in itself can be group of employees). Each employee can login using a softphone like Zoiper / bria etc. Then there can be call groups, IVR etc.

We are currently battling with software components and best options. Have had calls with few providers but the solutions they provide seems bit rudimentary. For example for some of them billing solution is not adequate. Free minutes can not be accounted adequately.

So can experts recommend a software solution which is reasonably advanced and can take care of upto 1000 clients. I guess we need here a class 5 softswitch + a hosted multitenant solution with webportal for tenants.

The key we are looking for is a sophistication which can help us to scale.

We have an Amazon Echo Dot device.

On our Amazon Alexa account, we have many skills installed.

With these skills, Alexa can connect to various devices such as SmartThings, Philips Hue, etc to control devices which are connected to these hubs.

This Alexa account is a UK based account so we have no accessibility to US based Alexa skills.

We are missing out on connectivity with devices we have and would like to find a way to use both UK and US based Alexa skills.

There is a VPN we have called NordVPN which we have that allows us to connect to other servers for accessing services, applications, etc in other countries.

1. If we could use NordVPN to access and use the US based Alexa skills
2. If we could use NordVPN to access both US and UK based Alexa skills at the same time
3. If there is an easy way to download a US based Alexa skill onto UK based Alexa account and use it on UK account for Alexa
4. Any alternative solution for issue; we would like to download a US based Alexa skill on a UK based Alexa account where we need to also access the UK based skills

I live in a bad cell area and have no land line.'

How do I use my high speed internet to make phone calls? When I connect my iPhone 7 to my wireless router, will the phone quality improve?

Is there a way to measure the connection quality?

I am having some issues with some phones and was hoping someone could hopefully point me in the right direction. I am not a phone guy by any means, so excuse any mistakes or anything that is unclear. Our past set up was as follows

Site A - Sonicwall NSA 250 M with Avaya IP Office 8.1
Site B - Sonicwall TZ 205 with 20x Avaya 9608 phones

The sites are connected via a Site to Site VPN.

A week or so ago, we swapped out Firewalls. We moved Site A's to Site B, and put a Sonicwall NSA 2600 at Site B. We did a simple export/import of configs. Even though they were different Firewall models, Sonicwall documentation said it was supported, and we haven't had any issues. Except one.

Our phones seem to experience call dropping and quality issues. We get 10x dropped calls a day, and inside IP Office I can see Quality of Service Alarms going off like crazy.

I have set up QoS and BWM on both sides of the Firewalls, I don't believe bandwidth is the issue.  It's ONLY my remote phones at Site B, which are all H.323 phones. But if someone from Site A calls Site B, there is a chance it will drop as well. Site A can call Site A all day, or externally, no issues. I played around with H323 transformations on the Sonicwall, and that actually seemed to fix the issue, but after enabling it my phones would deregister themselves after a few hours, and would not re-register.

I have set up wireshark on both ends, nothing out of the ordinary, no increase of traffic when issues comes up. …

We have 4 remote sites connected via MPLS T1, with Shoretel SG30 switches at each site.
One site in particular has had network connectivity issues for a long time, and so I thought I'd look at the state of the switch
since they lose Shoretel Communicator connectivity several times/day, on their PC's.

In Shoretel Director,  in Alerts section, out of 100 SG30 "Switch has lost connection to the network" messages,  20 of them are at other sites(not experiencing issues)

Is this common for a Shoretel SG30, to display so many alerts for a switch?

e.g. here are the entries for yesterday: (displaying "Switch has lost connection to the network" message)

Hi -

I have a client who is about to move office within the same building. They have all their comms kit including internet connection coming in on the ground floor next to their existing office setup. When they move 1 level up  they wanted to leave the comms kit in place for a bit whilst they wait for the new Internet connection to come online. The existing Wireless connection appears to reach at least one half of the floor above so i wanted to know whether there is a piece of kit that will connect to the wireless connection and distribute it via a switch so i can plug the VOIP phones into it. I recall them being wireless bridges but i am not sure how reliable they will be for distributing and managing voice traffic (4 users).
Could someone recommend whether this is good option and which brand of kit or whether there is a better solution,

Cisco call manager soft key templates do not appear to be applying to phones. I have created a new soft key template, have set up a test phone with the template selected both at Device and Device Profile levels and have reset/restarted the test phone. The result is no change to the soft key display on the test phone.

Also..... I have one (long standing) phone that has a different soft key button layout than others, but the soft key template config in both Device and Device Profiles is identical to all.

I have a feeling that there is something key I am missing, and perhaps overriding the soft key template config.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have phones to deploy that require a custom soft key config so I'd like to get this sorted out.

We have a Switchvox PBX server and Digium Phones on the desktop.  I am interested to learn what other people are using when employees are out on the plant floor and internal communication needs to happen.  Currently, employee has to be paged and then they have to walk to a phone and dial the extension.  It would be nice if we could use a different solution to limit the amount of time it takes to answer a call or communicate with fellow employees on the plant floor.  Thoughts?

I need to add dial in numbers for conference calls for my organization within Office 365.

We also need to make sure that whenever a user schedules a Skype meeting within Outlook 2016 (through Office 365) that the dial in numbers will appear below the "Join Skype Meeting" section of the calendar invitation (see the screenshot).

How can this be done?

I currently have 1 PRI configured on my voice gateway router.  We have had a few instances where we have had 20-21 simultaneous calls at a time, and as you know a single PRI only allows for 23 simultaneous calls.   I am looking to get another PRI from the same telco.  How does this work?  I have another T1(PRI) port on my router, which will be used to connect to the 2nd PRI, but how does it work on the Teclo side?  Do they  trunk the two PRI's together, so I can now have 46 simultaneous calls?  We are going to order another block of DID's with this new PRI as well.  So right now there are 39 numbers associated with the first T1, and I'm not sure yet how many we are going to get with the second block.    Does the telco tie these two PRI's together somehow, so both PRI's can share all the numbers?
