We need to Migrate Windows 2000 Server on vSphere 6.5

Existing Windows 2000 is a Physical Server , How can we migrate this to VM using VM converter supported version for 6.5?

What should be best approach to get it migrated to VM on my vSphere 6.5

Hi Experts,

I have a customer with company.local
The Domain Name  (pre windows 2000 name)  is : ABC_Customer

Is it possible to change this without problems ?

hi hope you are well.

so, i have a customers windows 2000 machine here.

disk knackered. managed to clone using ddrescue to new IDE (yes, ide) disk. fix file structure errors.

then it still wouldn't boot. turned out to be system registry issue. managed to fix it by running the win 2k registry fixer from a doctored xp boot disk, which was in itself a massive nightmare..

there is a program on the machine that is no longer available and controls thousands of pounds worth of kit. they don't make the kit anymore, or the old software. the new software doesn't control the old kit.  the motherboard is specific to this kit and importantly the pci card that connects to the kit.

so i need to get this program working on this exact box.

it is there, i can click the exe but it doesnt do much , just runs the egg timer.

i need to find out what it is calling that currently doesn't exist that prevents it from working.

any ideas please? been a loooong road this one already!

Hi, I need to add a Windows Server 2016 as domain controller.
Currently there is just one DC: Windows 2003 R2.
Forest functional level is: Windows 2000.
First question: can I safely raise this to Window Server 2003?

Second: is it possible to add Windows Server 2016 as DC?
If not, should I add a third server with 2008 , raise forest functional level to 2008, demote the 2003 DC, and then add Windows server 2016?
Thank you

Hi,
I have a very old scenario with two active domain controller:

server: Windows 2000
server2: Windows 2003 R2

I need to shutdown server Windows 2000. Before this, I need to make sure that every role is transferred to server2.
How can I do this?
I used command "netdom" to query the current state of roles,  but it seems it is not present in Windows 2003.
Thank you!

Dear Experts

Are there any of you old enough to remember Exchange 2000?
I have a client who is running Windows 2000 SBS server with Exchange 2000 in a VMware VM on a Windows 2008R2 server. There are only 7 users in this organisation & the only reason we need Exchange is for shared calendars - not worth buying a newer Exchange.

For a long time we had been running the old Windows 2000 server separately with the new (at the time) Windows 2008 machine using terminal services for the clients. We don't use a domain within the organisation but we left the old W2k server running as a domain controller & were able to access the shared calendars from the W2008 sessions.

Finally after 17 years we had to retire the old W2k machine, so we exported the working environment to a VMware VM on the 2008 machine. Calendars still worked perfectly. Eventually staff changes required 2 new calendars be created - herein lies the problem. I set up the new users in the W2k AD & selected create Exchange mailbox, but no mailboxes created. After a lot of to & fro I managed to get 1 mailbox to appear, but it is only visible to 1 client on the 2008 machine. This client can create appointments for the new user, but the new user cannot open any of the existing shared calendars.

My problem is that I have very limited experience working with Exchange so I am floundering a bit when it comes to troubleshooting issues. I need help!

Anyone able to assist will be most welcome. Remote access to the …

I have a small windows 2000 domain controller and want to install 2003 server (new Virtual Box) to eventually replace old VM. I do not (as manuals explain) want to upgrade 2000 DC, can't I just add the 2003 server to the existing 2000 domain, run both in parallel, then promote 2003 and decommission 2000 DC?

Options I see:
1. Join an existing domain (2003DC joining existing 2000 domain)
2. Create a new Child Domain, new Domain Tree, new forest (This does not look like what I want)

I have a Server 2008 Standard sp2. This is a non R2 server. I have a Server 2012 Essentials that im trying to make the PDC, but I get this error when trying to make it a DC.

"Verification of replica failed.  The forest functional level is Windows 2000.  To install Windows Server 2012 domain or domain controller, the forest functional level must be Windows Server 2003."

However, when I go check the functioning level it is at 2008 level.

I am trying to get FSMO roles from an old Windows 2000 AD to a Windows 2008 R2 Standard machine.
Currently, all roles are on Windows 2000.

dcdiag shows me this error:

Starting test: frsevent
         * The File Replication Service Event log test
There are warning or error events within the last 24 hours after the

SYSVOL has been shared. Failing SYSVOL replication problems may cause

         Group Policy problems.

I don't know if is relevant, but there was a disk space issue on Windows 2008.
Now I have deleted some content , and I have about 9 GB space free.

How can I go ahead ?

Thank you

Edit: I ran Event viewer on Windows 2000 (from 2008R2, so I can assume that RPC is fine between two machines).
I noticed several error "event 13508" ... it seems Windows 2000 cannot resolve other server's hostname.
Now I fixed this issue.

dcdiag still shows same error.
What can I do?
Thank you again

Unable to move or copy images in my photo directory.

I have 315,000 images in my photo directory of a windows 2000 Server.

About 100,000 can not be moved or copied into another directory.

I am logged in as administrator.

I also get an error when I try to take over ownership and the operation does not succeed.

I can open the images but not copy them with windows.

I have two 2012 domain controllers (Prometheus and Chronos), and both the Domain and Functional Level are at Windows Server 2003.  We've migrated from Windows 2000 to 2003 domain many years ago.  Everything has been working fine, and have not seen any errors with AD or replication, and we have not experiences any issues DNS or communications issues with our on-prem Exchange 2010 server.

All of our computers are Windows 10 Pro Computers.

So, I decided to view Active Directory Sites and Services, and discovered an DC (Nemesis) is still listed under server, but should not be there.  I believe it was a former DC and was properly demoted many years back.

Nemesis - Sites and Services
So, I am not sure whether I should simply delete it.  I do not want to start having AD issues.

So, I also decided to check DNS.  As you can see below within the forward lookup zones (.msdcs.ch13.local and ch13.local) Nemesis appears a name server.  The ch13.local\_msdcs only showing this server (Nemesis), and not the other servers (Prometheus or Chronos) does not appear to be correct.

DNS View
So, I don't know whether I need to delete "Nemesis" Server within Sites and Services and also the entries within DNS.  Not sure doing so will actually cause damage and not help.  Remember, AD and DNS have been working fine with no issues/errors for many years.

Below I added the output for Repadmin /Showrepl and DCDiag with details including DNs.

I'm new to VirtualBox and getting a critical error starting a Windows 2000 Server VM.   I would like to know what options I have to debug it as I really don't know where to start.

The VIM was created from a Windows 2000 Server system clone using Clonezilla followed by Sysinternals Disk2Vhd from the clone.

The original server was The Clone and VHD occurred without error, so I assume it's something with how I set it up in Virtualbox. I've attached the logs by the last run.

The server was a RAID 5  with 3 GB of memory.    3 GB of memory was provided to the VM.

If I know where to start...

Thanks lots for your insights.

I am hosting a website (popswine.com) on a W2K server. There is a valid SSL but our customers are getting "site not secure" errors with the implementation of the new browser rules.

Is there a fix and/or a SSL that will run on a W2K server.

We are planning an update but I'm looking for a "band-aid" if one exists.

I just installed Windows 2000 as Hyper-V VM on Windows 10 pro 64 bit successfully. But I am not able to access Host drives and internet despite my success in Win10ProVM. I would appreciate any suggestions and guidance how to configure Host drives and internet.  Here is the VM settings for W2KVM.

W2K DC in small production environment, 20 pc's, about 3 people are able to connect their laptops as "workgroup", they can access internet no problem, Can W2K harden this private network or do i need W2003 Server Ent, 2008, 2012 etc?

Yes there is a domain setup in active directory. All workers login in their own accounts.
Yes I am in rush process to upgrade.

Small business, VM running W2K Server also acting as DC, I have one other DC replicating, planning to upgrading to 2003 enterprise. Boss steps in "go to cloud", "Network attached Storage" etc...  Does Azure allow me to install 2003 from my local, or is cloud pre-determined from a pull down menu, 20012 R2, 2016, CentOS etc. or is my thinking wrong.

I'm arguing for simple upgrade path to 2003, then to 2008 here at the office, any thoughts or amunition to defend my plan?

I have another computer guy in town who is asking me to go crack the password on a 2000 server!  (not real keen on the idea).
I know that posting password crackers is probably outside the scope of what should be posted here, but if anyone can privately provide some advice, or if there is a known utility that can do that without harming the OS, I'd rather not take my chances with the one I have.

Customer has a Windows 2000 Advanced Server running some sort of legacy software.  I am working on setting up a more modern replacement but they have a pressing concern that the machine is exactly an hour behind.  I have tried setting it to the correct time manually but it persists in changing back.

I unchecked the option to automatically adjust for Daylight Savings Time, and then changed the time.  It stubbornly switches back in a few seconds.

I tried setting it to SNTP from Apple or pool.ntp.org, but it continues to change back.  When i try to set it to RTSDOMAIN it says the CURRENT TIME and the LOCAL TIME on the controlling server are an hour apart.  I say yes to change to the other server time.... I believe it setting to CURRENT TIME and not LOCAL TIME.

This is apparently causing a serious issue. And i have no idea how to force this server forward an hour.

UPDATE:  I should say that the machine in question is a virtual machine on a Windows Host.  The host is set correctly and working fine.

Hi, I have an application running in windows 2000. I do not have the source code for that..Moreover, it is mandatory for me to run this .exe in windows 2000. I have attached the jpeg file of the gui. This gui consists of different slots where I can manually type voltages.

Coming to my problem,
However, I want this to be automated..I want to type these voltages hundreds of times and very fast. Thus, lets suppose I got these voltages from another program in to a text file.
After assuming that I have a set of voltages in a text file.. Now i want to access this program, then copy a number from the text file, then paste in the program slot, then a double tab and copy and paste the next voltage. This process needs to be automated.. I have no clue what to do.. I was searching and found bat file or JAVA or .net can be used (just a superficial surfing the internet)... What platform should i choose for this program. Any help is greatly appreciated and acknowledged...Thanking u in advance

I was asked by a potential customer about their HP Designjet 110 Plus printer - it is hooked to an very old Windows 2000 system.  The printer started printing lighter and lighter so the person went out to buy a black ink cartridge as it appears this is all they print in - the color cartridges have been in there since 2007/8 - at least that is what the dates say on them.  Any thoughts on what could be causing the lighter black - I cleaned the printer thoroughly  - there is no software on the system to clean the printheads as I have read in other posts.  Yes the obvious answer is to buy something else but looking for any answers for them on this now.

hi guys,

I've downloaded Vmware Converter 4.0.1 that can support Windows 2000 machines (don't ask, this thing needs to disappear fast from our servers!!). I've installed it on the local machine itself. However, our Vmware environment is Esxi 5.5. So whatever I do, it won't connect from the application to the Vmware infrastructure when I enter the credentials.

Can I export this as a Vmware Server 2.x (the only option for servers given to me) and then load it up on the Vmware Esx 5.5 environment?

Thanks for helping

Hi All,

I am trying to automate a script that I have to run on Windows 2000, XP and 7 (64bit). Currently I am asking for user input by using the case method. I was wondering if it is possible to automate this? I need the script to check what OS version it is and to run that part of the script.

The file structure of what I am installing is the same for Windows 2000 and XP. It is different for Windows 7. Please advice?
