Windows 8

Windows 8 is a personal computer operating system developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, with an emphasis on improving its user experience on tablets. In particular, these changes included a touch-optimized Windows shell based on Microsoft's "Metro" design language, the Start screen, a new platform for developing apps with an emphasis on touchscreen input, integration with online services, support for USB 3.0, Advanced Format hard drives, near field communications, and cloud computing. Additional security features were introduced, such as built-in antivirus software, integration with Microsoft SmartScreen phishing filtering service and support for UEFI Secure Boot on supported devices with UEFI firmware.

I am thinking of the following scenario. A Windows 8 or 10 computer hangs on startup. You suspect it may be a virus. You can't boot into the GUI but you can use a boot rescue USB and get to a command line. Is there an antivirus executable you can run from the command line? Preferably one that's free.

I have a user running windows 7 or 8, but I have to check.  He has a dell touchscreen, all in one computer.  The problem is, when he moves an application to the right or left, or just anywhere on his screen, so he can have two screens side by side to compare, one of the screens resizes automatically to full screen and it's annoying.
Is there a way to disable that feature, I can't think of where I find that option.

What are my options when I need to recover a forgotten password from a Windows 8 machine. I suspect that it is linked to a live account, but I'm not sure. I ran Ophcrack with Vista proba free tables, but no luck. I know that the site says it doesn't support Windows 8, but in separate threads I have read that there are people out there that have had success using Ophcrack on Windows 8.

I'm trying to help out a lady that forgot her password. All she wants from the machine are the photos of her baby daughter. Everything else is expendable.

does not find cached browser videos

but
kind:=video
shows me many .ts files

I know youtube and other sites have small videos they leave on browser

I dont want to use nirsoft to for each browser to find every video and play each video

is there a FILE EXPLORER command
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa965711(v=vs.85).aspx

for finding ADDITIONAL browser cache video

this is more of a windows 7 FILE EXPLORER question because if windows 10 has a gui then it will not be backwards compatible

how can I play .ts files

vlc, windows media player, windows movie
tell me that file is too short or corrupt for every file

I have a Windows 8 Enterprise PC (that is my primary PC).  I want to upgrade to Win10; but, was told that I could NOT.  Recently, I was told that I could upgrade to Win10 Enterprise; but, no-one knows about the upgrade process.  I have even called Microsoft support and they just tell me that, in order to up grade I have to have Win 8 or 8.1, not Enterprise (they do not understand my question).
My question is w/r to the actual upgrade process - is it an in place upgrade (keeping my files and applications) or is it a clean install (removing/clearing all existing files and applications).
I am told (in many Microsoft sites) to go to the Microsoft VLS site and download the Win10Enterprise.iso; but, I cannot find it anywhere !!!
So, right now I feel like I am near to a solution w/r to upgrading my primary PC (finally); but, not quite there .....  any help ?????

My client has a MAC that is utilizing Parallels for  Windows 8.  THe IP address for the MAC is obviously the correct IP range, but the Windows IP Range is in a different IP Range. So the Windows environment cannot communicate with the printer since they are on different IP ranges.

Printer IP  192.168.254.25
MAC IP 192.168.254.10
Windows 8 in Parallels  IP 10.25.65.4

This drive clicks constantly, about once every two seconds. I am suspecting a driver problem as

a. the drive checks out as being sound
b. the problem doesn't happen when it's being used under Linux

Any suggestions?

I need to boot my Surface Pro 3 from a USB stick. The up and down volume button is broken so I can't use that process to boot so I went into the advanced settings and followed the instruction from Microsoft - https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/storage-files-and-folders/boot-surface-from-usb-recovery-device?os=windows-10&=undefined - but it still boots from the SSD only. Any idea how I can get this device to boot from the USB stick?

Thank you!

Robert

Hi there,
I am in an environment of 400 users.
Desktops get reissued to users regularly. When the desktop gets given out for the first time it is imaged using MDT. When the computer is handed to another user, the support guys have to go along and reconfigure the computer for the next user. I know it sounds like you could reimage it but the company I have just started with doesn't have everything in the image, so it is a much bigger job to reimage the computer.
So part of preparing the computer for the next user is changing the Windows 8 and Windows 10 start menu tiles back to the standard company way. the business doesn't want to lock down the start menu but wants the highly paid professionals that use the computers to start off with the most likely to be useful things in the start menu, and then leave the users to alter it as they see fit from there.
The users have roaming profiles.
I would like to help the support team be able to push the start menu back to the desktop using powershell or something like that.
I found in powershell the commands export-startlayout and import-startlayout, but it doesn't work on roaming profiles as far as I can see. That is what Microsoft says and it seems to be right. I tried it on computers not joined to the domain and it works fine.
I can see group policy is capable of it but the users need to be allowed to change it too.
Do you have any other ideas?
Thanks,
Shaun

We have about 17,000 about 60/40 Windows 10 to 8.1. All the sudden the 8.1 ones users cannot login the PC sits at Please wait for user profile service for users with a roaming profile. If we remove that they can login. The windows 10 users seem unaffected. The only error I see on them is Error 6005 The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logon).

Nothing network wise has changed.
