Windows 8

Windows 8 is a personal computer operating system developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, with an emphasis on improving its user experience on tablets. In particular, these changes included a touch-optimized Windows shell based on Microsoft's "Metro" design language, the Start screen, a new platform for developing apps with an emphasis on touchscreen input, integration with online services, support for USB 3.0, Advanced Format hard drives, near field communications, and cloud computing. Additional security features were introduced, such as built-in antivirus software, integration with Microsoft SmartScreen phishing filtering service and support for UEFI Secure Boot on supported devices with UEFI firmware.

I am running an ASUS PA329Q monitor at 3840 x 2160 resolution , using a NVIDEA GTX980 TI video card. Last night I upgraded from a clean install of windows 8 to 8.1. Ever since then my screen, icons, taskbar and windows have become huge. It virtually looks like the resolution is set at 800 x 600. I have all the latest updates installed and I simply cannot find the problem.

RE:  StartComponentCleanup Task fails
DISM giving contradictory results

My StartComponentCleanup task in Tasks Scheduler was failing with the error:
Last Run Result:  The component store has been corrupted. (0x80073712).

The task is located in Task Sheduler under  Microsoft, Windows, Servicing

No problem, I thought - over to elevated command prompt and DISM.

OK Great, should be ready to clean.

When using the System Restore option ("Use a restore point recorded on your PC to restore Windows") on this HP laptop it told me that it couldn't progress as there is no admin account on it. Perhaps this is the result of its owner being the victim of remote scammers?
If there is no rollback possibility, i'd prefer to reinstall with a stock (bloatware-free) Windows 8 image. Is such a thing available to users of Win 8 (possibly with a Home edition)?

Hi Experts,

Need your expert guidance as to why I am getting an error message when running an executable file in Windows 8.1 but the same file ran without any error in Windows 7. Pls see the screenshot as attached below. I have tried all Windows Compatibility Options but non is working.
to get the application run in Windows 8.1

Hope to get a solution on the above issue.

Thanks

Alienware 18 laptop, just over 3 years old.
Original Setup, WD hard drive with 80gb msata
started having problems with it when it was upgraded from Win 8.1 to 10
Tried going back to Win 8.1, but system froze on any reboot.
Did a full restore, from factory restore partition, same result.  System would run fine until a reboot or shut down and the hang upon startup.
If I took the hard drive out and booted to it in another system then put it back in the laptop and booted it would run until reboot or shutdown.
Ran Western Digital Diags came back error free.
Ran MemTest something like 16 or 18 passes, no errors.
Tried another hard drive, same result.
Loaded Windows 8.1 from original disk, formated all drives removing all recovery partitions and everything.
Loaded up and tried installing drivers.  On second driver system froze.
As things progressed, tried reloading windows 3 or 4 times, but as soon as I started to load the first driver, no matter what I chose, the system froze.
I then loaded windows and proceeded directly to Dell support site to begin downloading drivers direct.  Before the first one ever got downloaded the system froze again.  Windows is not corrupt again and won't restart.
I also ran the Dell diagnostics, including the full memory scan, and everything passed.

Hi

One of our customers need to give some few users the availability to install software under Windows 10 (Build 1703) as they are developers. The solution that most of my senior engineers are recommending is to create two users. One normal user and the other local administrator that have no other permission in the domain.

Two other engineers are telling to do it KIS (keep it simple). They both recommend to create one user, give it local administrator permissions and enable UAC. After they told me also to educate the users to be careful when the authentication prompt appears.

What would you recommend me?

Many thanks in advance.

We just purchase a new slim notebook and it came with Windows 10 Home and we need to upgrade this notebook to Windows 10 Pro.

On the previous notebook it also came with W10 home and we also purchased the W10 Pro upgrade (2 tears ago).

- can we use that W10 Pro upgrade since we no longer will be using the old notebook?

- where can we purchase the W10 Pro upgrade?

I had a similar problem with Office 365's Word 2016 that was solved in this thread here but the solution didn't work in my Outlook 2016.

I've now managed to get the standard Wingdings font Emoji's working in Outlook AutoCorrect as per the sample pic below;  Wingdings Font works in Outlookbut when I try to get (or add) other Emoji symbols like the ones in the picture below into AutoCorrect, I still have the frustrating problem of getting a square instead of the Symbol I've selected when I try to insert the Emoji into an email message body.
Symbol Box Screen GrabIt all appears to be correct in the AutoCorrect box as shown below AutoCorrect Box Screen Grab
but what I actually get when I type  ;)  in the email body is this: Snapshot of Square error
The exact same thing happens even if I try to Insert the Symbol into the email body from the Symbol box above.

Now, adding to the mystery is that ALL of those Symbols work perfectly well in Microsoft Word 2016 (downloaded and installed from my Microsoft Office 365 Subscription) as has been proven by the Solved question I posted in the URL LINK that I also pointed to at the start of this question.

The only Symbols my Outlook seems to want to accept are from the Wingdings Font collection. Given that Outlook uses word for writing its emails anyway, that makes no sense to me whatsoever ?!

Things that have been tried to fix this problem include the following:

  • 1. Doing a Quick Repair of Office 365.
  • 2. Doing an Online Repair of Office 365
  • 3. Uninstalling Office 365 completely and then Reinstalling it

We are being audited by the BSA and they are saying that it is illegal for us to use any copies of Windows 7, 8, 10 Home or Home Premium for business use.

These computers are used for general web applications, or cloud based services. (Everything we do is cloud based)

We do not use features on these PCs like joining to a domain ..etc.

I have done research and people say it is fine to use these copies of Windows in a business environment, but does anyone have any proof? Anywhere on Microsofts site that I can find this info?

Hi

One of my junior technician is trying to set up BgInfo v4.21 on a custom test system. He is telling that it is to be complicated and need to be done with Group Policy Objects. Is that true?
I thought it is easier. Can somebody provide me the easiest way to set up BgInfo v4.21 on a DC, Application Server and 3 Clients.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi

A large customer needs that we measure time for some applications after and before installing an enterprise Antivirus.
They also need to measure boot time in both conditions.

Which tools would you use?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, I need help on creating either Batch file or Powershell script to modify security settings of the internet explorer.
What I need is to add multiple sites into trusted sites of the internet explorer.
I have done this through Group policy for domain computers but I also have 50 of non domain computers.

Please let me know if you have ideas.

The latest iTunes (as of March 2017) gets installed and gets pointed to C:\music on the initial install.  When iTunes is started it gets the message "The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you don't not have write permission for the folder".  The folder is NOT read only and it HAS the right permissions.  We've gone as far as to change the C:\music folder permissions to FULL for EVERYONE.

This is on a WIndows 8.1 Pro, 64-bit OS.  The machine is also on a domain with redirected folders.  Even so, this install should work because it is installed locally where the domain user is also the in the local administrator's group (much less giving EVERYONE the same privileges).

CHKDSK C: /F was run but there were no errors.
CHKNTFS C: was not dirty.
The system is not fragmented and the MFT only has 2 fragments.

Any ideas?

I currently own an ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z with an AMD FX-8350 Black Edition processor. The motherboard is not function properly and ASUS has tried to repair it, to no avail. I am still within my warranty period, but I am not receiving any further assistance from ASUS; even though I have tried (am trying still). So I am going to write it off and get a replacement.

I need to be pointed in the right direction to determine... how can I get a replacement MB/CPU and still use the current OS License (Windows 8.1 Professional 64 Bit OEM System)?

Has anybody been able to get the Sony EVI-D70 camera work with Skype on either a Windows or Mac?  I have tried the Startech SVID2USB23 and the Hauppauge USB-LIVE2 adapters using both S-Video and Composite video...no luck.  Skype will not pick up the camera.  It recognizes both adapters but won't connect to the video.  If I try the same camera with Google Hangouts, Webex, GoToMeeting and Join.Me, all those services find the camera with no problems using either adapters.  I have tried changing the webcam settings, downloading obscure drivers, etc., and nothing works.  I have tried Win 7, 8 and 10...no luck.  Mac OS 9 and 10...no luck.  If I call Sony, they say they are not responsible for Skype.  If I call Skype, they say they have a list of approved webcams on their site.  If you are using a non-approved webcam, they cannot help.

Please advise.

Any suggestions how I can copy that file?
