what kind of activities on a windows server would actually require local administrator privileges, or as a server engineer yourselves, what day to day tasks do you perform on windows servers that do require you to be a member of the local admins group. We have got to go through the local admins groups on a number of critical servers and the numbers seem on the high side, but I want to be equipped with some examples of when you do need local admin rights to query if these users would ever need to perform such a task as part of their duties? If I could get something like the most common 5 admin type duties that are performed on windows servers that do require local admin rights that would be a start I suppose. I suspect in many cases those with administrator group privileges on some of the servers have no real requirement to have it. In case its of interest the vast majority of these servers run Windows server 2012.

I am running a powershell script that installs Adobe CC at startup, it is huge and takes a long time, as the script runs immediately after imaging various other updates, installs etc that are going on seem to make windows reboot before the adobe cc script finishes. Is there a way to prevent restart in my powershell script? any other ideas?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

We've had an audit finding:  "SMB Signing not required"

I realise that SMB signing is by default enabled on the DC's.

My question,
Weighing up the risk versus the performance overhead, is it recommended to enable SMB signing on all servers?

Here they want to install everything (Domain, DNS, Domain Controller, Exchange 2016, etc) on a brand new server with Windows 2016 Standard because there are no more servers available. This type of configuration is currently working fine on a Windows 2008 R2 Standard with Exchange 2010.

I've read dozens of guides and each one is different from the other.

I need to know if there is a step-by-step installation guide to achieve what I need: Having everything installed in the same server.

Right now the server only has Windows 2016 Standard, no other service or features installed.

I have downloaded the latest of:
- Windows 2016 Exchange Server (SW_DVD9_Exchange_Svr_2016CU_MultiLang_-13_Std_Ent_.iso_MLF_X22-11775.ISO)
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2
- Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 6.0 Runtime
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable Package

Other techs here tried last week to install Exchange 2016, but when the server was rebooted, it gave some errors, so instead of trying to figure out the problem, they decided to reformat the whole server with Windows 2016 Standard again. So now I have a clean installation to start.

Can someone give some clear step-by-step indications on the order that I should install everything?

Thanks for your help,
Roberto.

Hi,
I have an issue with my server running Windows Server 2016. I think the issue is DNS or DHCP related but unsure.
for a while now, myself and a few colleagues have been domain joined.
When we're out and about, we connect in to the server Via VPN - which seems to work fine.

The server assigns an IP address and lets us in.

This has stopped working now and I can't figure out what config has changed.

If I connect directly to the network where the server is at, my laptop gets no internet at all - when I try and troubleshoot I get an error which says "WiFi" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. The IPv4 settings are set to retrieve the settings automatically from the DHCP.

Interestingly, I am trying to connect a brand new laptop up to the domain and having a slightly different issue. When the new laptop is on the same network, the servers DHCP manages to assign an IP address. When I go to join the domain, it asks for credentials but then errors and says:
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "xxxx.local" The network path was not found

From this new computer, I can remote desktop into the server when I disable the server firewall- even though it isn't domain joined
and with my existing computer, which is domain joined, I can't RDP in now.

Both new and old laptops are on windows 10 pro - the oldest being less than a year.

Any help would be hugely appreciated

Kind Regards,
Dave

We're in the process migrating domain controllers.
Server 2008 to Server 2016
Did "dfsrmig /setglobalstate 1" on Server 2008 which is going to be decommissioned
its been a few hours. The message said it could take up to 60 minutes to reach a consistent state.
When typing in "dfsrmig /getmigrationstate" the following comes up
"Migration has not yet reached a consistent state on all Domain Ctonrollers. State information might be stale due to AD latency."

Hi Experts,

I have a Windows Server 2016 setup with Hyper-V. On the server 2 virtual machines have been created. This has been a standard installation and the default Production Switch is used.

I would however like to give the 2 virtual machines machines a fixed IP (different from the IP they automatically received).

The information I see requires to setup a different virtual switch. Since the machines are in production I would like to be sure this is the correct procedure. Perhaps a link to the correct procedure?

Thanks for any help in advance,
Mark

Two node Hyper-V cluster.  Both nodes are Windows Server 2019.  All guests are Windows Server 2016 or higher.

I noticed that a few guests has checkpoints (snapshots) that were no longer needed to I attempted to merge them.  I get this error:

I am logged on as the DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR and still get that error.  We need to merge these snapshots before they start taking up too much space.  Ideas?

Good morning,

I am facing this situation this morning:
Exchange 2016 CU9 on Windows Server 2016 running without issues.
Reboot last night.  2 Updates were installed to Windows:  KB4516044 and KB4512574.  No errors logged.
After reboot, all exchange services were deactivated.

Somebody installed CU13 to the machine, which stalled halfway through.  I reactivated all exchange services, started them all, and they all started, but after another reboot of the machine all services were deactivated again without any further installations.
Now, after any new reboot, all exchange services are deactivated once more.

If I retry CU13, it greets me with incomplete installation and wants to continue, but stalls at step 4/11:  Transport service.
It sais that it could not restart the Exchange Service Host (because after setup starts, the service is once more deactivated, but STILL RUNNING

I think something other than the CU13-Installation is deactivating the services.

What to do?

Are there any limitations or rextrictions to using a trial version of Windows Server 2016/2019 Standard X64.  I have to stand up a couple servers for Active Directory, NPS, DNS, DHCP, File Services, Print etc.very soon, but the approval for the purchase takes some bureaucratic time.  I'm wanting to know if I can install it, and then in a week or so when the purchase is approved, buy the full license and apply it to the trial version.

Any gotcha's with this that I'm not thinking of?

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2016 that a 2 TB SSD has been installed in.  Is there a way to image this server to this SSD online and then have the old HDD disconnected and the SSD boot up normally?  I'm trying to perform this remotely so I don't have to be on-site to image the drive with an imager.  I use StorageCraft software but not on this system in particular.  But I could buy ShadowProtect SPX.  Would this allow me to do this or is there a better or less expensive way of doing this?  As ShadowProtect SPX Server lists for $1095 and this is a one time image.  Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a weird one and i'm not sure where to go from here.  My account has been getting locked out of our AD controller constantly.  I tracked it down to my SpiceWorks Server (SW-Server) that has been the cause and i have been unable to find where in the server the old credential is cached.

Today i just got another PC and did a fresh load on it.  The original server was joined to the domain and using my user account for the login that SpiceWorks was loaded into.  The new server i just kept as a local user and is not joined to the domain.  I figured since its off the domain there cant be a way for it to lock my account out.  Guess i was wrong.  In the event logs (which are attached) its showing now that Spice-Server is locking my account.

This new server is not joined to the domain so i dont know how it could be reaching out and using my credentials (wrong ones) to lock out my account.  The only thing installed on the PC is the Spiceworks desktop and the restored database from the old Server.  We have Office365 so the SpiceWorks install is reaching to Office365 for the ticket emails not a local hosted exchange. I checked the Spiceworks service and it using the local user account not a domain one.

Attached is the event log from the old server and the new server.  Can anyone help me to figure out how its still locking me out.

Thanks in advance

I am trying to accomplish task where I pick and choose folders those get shown to only those users who have access to it. I know this can be accomplished by turning on Access based enumeration. I have a namespace pointing to particular folder share.

I got a question about applying ABE to this entire namespace which points to a particular share on the server, currently access based enumeration is NOT turned on.

Name space:  \\server.com\CorporateShare
Name space server under this name space:  \\Server1\CorporateShare

Currently access based enumeration is NOT turned on.

\\Server1\CorporateShare contains 100s of folders which have specific NTFS permissions on various folders. I am assuming if I turn on Access based enumeration on the name share to gain this feature, check the box ( Right click on namespace, properties, advanced tab, check Enable access-based enumeration for this namespace)  it will apply to the entire name space. Therefore all 100s of folders will get accessbased enumeration feature and people will not be able to see folders they dont have access to.

I have read this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/dfs-namespaces/enable-access-based-enumeration-on-a-namespace

My questions:

1. Is it possible to Enable Access based enumeration on the name space and ONLY allow specific folders out of these 100s of folders to have ABE set ?
( meaning I decide which folder will get  ABE and not all the folders ) . This is…

Hi,

I am trying to run the MS Access file via task scheduler.  Task Scheduler run on time and MS Access start in Task manager after one minute Excel also started but than nothing. Both process stay at task manager and nothing happen. I waited for hours. Please review the 1st image.
I tried everything adding path into trusted location. Please review 2nd image but same result. I need to End task both applications otherwise it will stay in task manager.

This is my code: If i run this code via command prompt than everything is working fine. If i create a task scheduler as per below code than MS Access/Excel start but stay in task manager.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Microsoft Access 2010\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\DbPath\DbName.mdb" /xMacroName
I create batch file of above code and run via task scheduler but same thing happened as I explain above.

Note: We are migrating the applications from Server 2012R2 to Server2016. Same code/procedure is working fine in windows server 2012R2. Means Task scheduler is working fine in 2012R2 but its not working with 2016. Both servers are work group and login user have full administrator rights.
Just let you know that I need to assign the Batch Job Rights to user via this link 'local group policy' " Batch Job Rights otherwise user receive the error. Please review 3rd image.

Please help me to  resolve this issue.

I've been experiencing this issue when logging into our network from different locations including VPN where drives and folders I normally have access to are no longer available.  Some network shares fail to connect completely and some only show me some folders but not all of them.  This is very strange behavior and I'm not sure what could be accounting for it.

These sites are networked through a wan connection and has DC's at both sites that are trusted.

I had this question after viewing tool to generate passwords for active directory users.

I usually use this cmdlets to create users in AD using powershell:
import-csv C:\temp\ADUsers.csv |
foreach {New-ADUser -name $_.name -displayName $_.displayname
-OtherAttributes @{'company'= $_.company;'department'= $_.Department;'pager'= $_.pager;'mobile'= $_.mobile;'UserPrincipalName'= (“{0}@{1}” -f $_.name,”test.net”)}
-Enabled $true }

My issue is, I couldn't use the password generation cmdlets from the solution in this post tool to generate passwords for active directory users  in my script, I don't know how to make it work with my script, I'm not that professional in powershell.

any other cmdlets are welcomed :)

keep in mind that the password policy in my company is 9 characters at least, 1 capital letter at least, 1 small letter at least, and 1 number at least

Hi, i have a 3 server S2D setup that i want to add new SSDs to.

Currently i have a storage pool with 10 HDDs and 2 400GB SSDs on each server. I have 1 volume using 50% capacity of both.

I want to add 3 new SSDs into each server that are 1.6TB each and create a new volume that uses 33% of HDD and new SSD storage.   Once i have then migrated the data off the existing volume i will delete it and create 2 more using roughly 33% each.

Is it possible to do this? Any help is appreciated!
