Windows Vista is an operating system created by Microsoft as the successor to Windows XP. It was intended for PCs, workstations and laptops, and shares the same code base as its successor, Windows 7. New features included an updated graphical user interface (GUI) and visual style dubbed Aero, a new search component called Windows Search, redesigned networking, audio, print and display subsystems, and new multimedia tools. Vista aimed to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network, using peer-to-peer technology to simplify sharing files and media between computers and devices. Windows Vista included version 3.0 of the .NET Framework, allowing software developers to write applications without traditional Windows APIs.

Hi

We need to start the following Component Test on a HP EliteDesk 800 G2:
Component Test
But if I click F2 during the system start we see this:
F2
Any idea how to run the Component Test from Bios? I have ran the check ones but can’t remember anymore. We have the Bios version 02.15 from 06/02/2016. Please note we can’t start Windows to run any Software. Also any other Test-BootCD is not an option as we have to prove the problem with HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi

We are creating new Group Policy Object’s for Windows 10 clients. Before Windows 10 we used Group Policy Preferences. But we see that there are no new preferences build for Windows 10 but the old ones are still working.

Question 1) Are preferences now discontinued?
Question 2) How did you create Power Setting Policies for Windows 10?

Many thanks in advance.

It is Windows Mail and not any other name.

Last year the ISP was changing their servers, etc. and we could no longer user our user name to login. We had to start using the entire e-mail address. While that was going on my Windows Mail from the start menu would not open. It was because the user name was not the entire e-mail address in tools > properties. We went in and confirmed that all outgoing and incoming servers settings were good. since then no problems until last Saturday.

No e-mails were received for about 5 hours. The last one received was around 1pm. No more arrived. I called ISP tech support and I do not recall taking any action, and suddenly 11 messages arrived. Sunday and Monday no problems.

Today > start > Windows Mail it opens the program like it always has and I think it had me logged in which is also normal. I should have gotten at least one message from EE such as a neglected question. I sent an e-mail to myself and it never arrived. I call tech support and 8 messages on the mail server. We try different things and check all serve settings and everything is fine.
I sent tech support an e-mail and they got it.

I can not receive mail for some reason. Tech support said my Windows Mail is not recognizing the incoming mail server settings. They could not help me any further since they showed it was not on their end. I remember from Saturday how all of sudden around 6pm here come 11 messages that had been on the server since around 1pm the same day.…

Hello,

My sister has an older HP laptop that is running Vista SP2 32 bit.  A week ago she was manually typing a URL to a favorite site.   She had a typo and was infected with a browser pop-up that warned her about a serious infection.  We used Malwarebytes, CCleaner, and F-prot to clean her system.  MBAM was used last and found many (I think a hundred) PUP.  She removed them.  After she rebooted her computer would no longer boot.  We tried several things (that escape me at this time).  Now the computer will only boot in Safe Mode.  If we try regular boot it will get to the point where it says Windows and has a moving bar - then it freezes.

My sister does not have any original disks from HP.  She also does not want to reset her computer to factory default.  While booted in safe mode, I copied all of her files to a USB.  I made it so hidden folders were visible, so I could copy her app data, desktop, etc.

Is the next step to run Start Up repair?  I have seen various sites explaining how to do this, but most say you need the Vista CD.  What can I do so her computer becomes functional again?

Thanks!

PS - she does plan to buy a new computer in the next few months.  Also, let me know if you need any info.  I am leaving town tomorrow night and would really like to get this resolved in the next 12 to 16 hours.

Hi experts, I have a desktop computer running Vista here that shows a "svchost.exe" process running that sometimes uses 500-600 megs of memory - that doesn't seem right. is there a way to find out what is going on there.... or if it's some kind of virus or something?

Thanks

I know - what the heck am I upgrading to Vista for?!  Well I need to "leap frog" this machine to Windows 7, if I possibly can.  there are a lot of special configurations on this old XP box that I want to try and preserve, and do not want to have to rebuild.  I know its a long shot - and I know its never recommended to do the upgrade path.  But if it works, it will save a lot time and effort.  Ofcourse - at what point am I spending more time and effort upgrading it, right?  That's why I wanted to check with some experts to see if theres any help for what I'm experiencing.  So I've got a 32-bit XP SP2 machine, and I'm attempting a Vista Business SP1 upgrade.  It gets to the compatibility phase, and after "checking compatibility" for 5 minutes, it results with an empty compatibility window and a CLOSE button - which cancels the upgrade.  I'm guessing theres an application or driver that's incompatible and stopping the upgrade - but its not telling me what it is.  I then tried running Vista and Win 7 upgrade advisors, and those won't run for some reason.  So...it seems I'm stuck.  Any ideas out there?

Thanks for your help.

Windows 2012 R2

WSUS 6.3
Windows Vista Business 32 Bit

On my Windows Vista Laptop which is domain joined all of a sudden I am getting 100 % CPU all the time
After researching I found the when I stop BITS and WUAUSERV services my CPU drops to nothing.

So I did a tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe and found wuauserv the fending service

I then went to the registry key

HKLM\SYSTEM\CSS\Services\WUAUSERV and changed the value from 0x20 to 0x10  but that did not help either

Then I rebuilt the Computer and put Windows 7 on it with the same results.

Then I put back on Windows Vista Business and applied all the updates via WSUS server
All was good even after Service Pack 2 was installed for Vista.

Then I found the problem

This update applied
Windows Update Agent version 7.6.7000.256

This was installed automatically I cant seem to uninstall it.

This is what is causing the high cpu and now the computer will not report to my WSUS server

This is a 32 bit Laptop and I believe only 1 core on the CPU very low end.

But this has been working for years with no issues

Windows Update Agent version 7.6.7000.256  is the problem I know for sure

I tested this theory by doing a System Restore on the Vista computer and then the cpu went back to zero.

If I stop the services it goes back to zero

But then the policy triggers the service again every 6 hours to check for updates from wsus server and that when the …

There is no video when machine boots into 'normal' Windows mode - Win8.1/10.  There is video in Safe mode, and there is video on an external monitor if connected to the VGA connector. The machine scores 100% in the pre-boot diagnostics.  The main display shows a very dark color for 15-20 seconds, goes completely black for 3 seconds and then shows the same dark color again for 15-20 seconds. We can also get video in normal mode for a short while by uninstalling the display adapter driver - Intel HD Graphics - and rebooting but 1-10 minutes after that, the video will disappear again. It feels like the video hardware is having a tough time mode-switching but no problems have been detected in diagnostics.

The machine, purchased from Amazon, will not be serviced by Dell because we can't tell them who the original purchases is(!). It feels as if the machine was sold as grey market or refurbished but don't really think that should be our problem.

So, I support a clinic that has been dragging their feet to get rid of Windows XP.  They are a few virtual machines that they use to remote in.  Of course, they don't have any of the original software so a clean Windows vista/7 install isn't an option.  So I have successfully upgraded xp to vista to 7 with little to no problems.  Trying the same method with this Virtual machine with no luck.  cleared all the "potential issues" that Microsoft checks, starts to copy files then when it get to the expanding files, it errors out.  Gives 0x8007001f error code,  I have run chkdsk, sfc, removed antivirus, installed all XP updates, removed powershell.  It is a pretty basic VM, they use this one program and internet explorer.  Can't figure out how to get past this error.

Environment : VMware
Virtual Machine : Windows 7 VM which has gone through rolling upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP then to Vista and finally to Windows 7
Issue : After the rolling upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7, the windows installation always getting corrupted once shut down the VM. Not able to boot normally or boot from safe mode. Cannot restore from restore point also. Only way is to revert back Vista snapshot and perform the rolling upgrade again.
By the way, this issue only happens when shutdown the VM. No issues if restart the VM.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Was told I needed to remove files under Windows\Software Distribution by Mark Wood on here and when I tried I was not able to remove all of them. I got all of them but the
Data Store folder which is 450 mb and the ReportingEvents.log

Says I do not have permission. Do I need to simple log off switch to an Admin.....which consequently I thought I was one. When I go to switch user it does not show the Admin. It shows my name which I am pretty sure has admin rights.

Any help appreciated. Apparently the updates are big cause I deleted over 750 mb of files.

I had this question after viewing Windows Vista for Business Network Adapter Stopped working.

I know I need to upgrade but I am not sure I can without Windows messing up my machine somewhere else when my laptop was recently upgraded to Windows 10 it totally messed up my awesome internal Wireless card. Now I had to by an external Netgear stick which gets bent broke and will soon be out of commission too.

Does anyone know the best way for me to upgrade to the highest level of Windows and the most cost effective. I have limited funds. Please advise. It is on the same machine that is mentioned above which currently has network & internet connection problems.

I opened System Information and Network Adapter Type says NOT AVAILABLE
I run the Windows Network Diagnostics it says " Install Wireless Networking Hardware and verify that the correct drivers are loaded.

I run IPCONFIG and I get illustration one

I try all three of the from hovering over the Network Icon in the lower right corner of the status bar on the desktop. Illustration two.

I need to get this PC back on the internet to update and download files. Which of course I cannot.I also cannot see my other 4 machines on my network either.
Any advice appreciated.

We changed some settings trying to improve performance of the system. After that images in the pictures folder and on the desktop are no longer images to be viewed. We have tried various ways to restore this and no luck.

?

We have been using Irfanview for screen shots since Paint lost it's setting for some reason a few weeks ago. Irfanview works fine but the names of all the saved images are the same = clipboard01. We rely on the images themselves to identify. Yes we are lazy and do not give some of them specific names if they are only going to be for demonstration only and later deleted. The one below is an example.

Tech support for one of my programs suggested to examine my GPU (graphics processor) and check for the size and make and model.
Where can I find that?

Vista Home Basic 32-bit has suddenly stopped doing backups.  Using the Backup and Restore program included with Windows, immediately get an error of 0x8000FFFF.  Volume Shadow Copy is running.  I have run CHKDSK and SFC.  No help yet.  I have created another profile and moved all of the data.  Nothing.  The computer is getting worse in terms of operation after all of this work, so I am wondering if the hard drive is the problem, but it passes all tests and SMART looks fine.

Hi,

I have a windows vista laptop but the administrator password has been forgotten. There is also a standard user account that can be accessed.

There are important files on the admin account that need to be accessed.

Is there anyway that I can reset the password to the Admin account?

Thanks,
