Windows Vista is an operating system created by Microsoft as the successor to Windows XP. It was intended for PCs, workstations and laptops, and shares the same code base as its successor, Windows 7. New features included an updated graphical user interface (GUI) and visual style dubbed Aero, a new search component called Windows Search, redesigned networking, audio, print and display subsystems, and new multimedia tools. Vista aimed to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network, using peer-to-peer technology to simplify sharing files and media between computers and devices. Windows Vista included version 3.0 of the .NET Framework, allowing software developers to write applications without traditional Windows APIs.

Just throwing something out there because I'm at a loss.... No one seems to know or can fix my issue with Visual Studio 2010 express and professional trial:

I am creating C programs in the compiler.   I get a clean compile.  However when I  attempt to debug it, not so much.   It throws several errors and stops running my console.   It says that it is missing ntdll.dll, mscrv100d.dll, and another dll file whose name escapes me at the moment... or that it cant write to them.  I verified those files do exist.

I've tried setting my project up as an empty project, a win32 project, and a win32 console project.... and different setting variations... none of which worked.   I also tried running the app as an administrator (I am the admin on this machine but there are several profiles (3)).

Any ideas as to why VS is being such a pain in my rear?   Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.   Thanks! M

So, I'm removing infections from a computer, and ComboFix says I have a particularly bad Rootkit, which is Rootkit.ZeroAccess.  After removal and reboot, now my keyboard and mouse do not work.  This is on a laptop, so I can't just unplug them (at least easily!).  I have an external keyboard and mouse plugged in, which works fine.  I'm continuing to run scans and remove infections, but from what I've seen Googling, everyone just reloads their systems with this problem.  Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I have a Dell XP 420 desktop with a fresh reload of Vista 32-bit.  Upon successful install of the OS and drivers, it crashes when a pre-downloaded copy of Service Pack 1 is installed.  The same predownloaded file has been used several times on other systems, and has been successful.  The bios has been updated to the latest version from Dell's site.

I believe Windows 7 SP1 experienced the same issue, and we have already tried a different hard drive, as it was also determind the hard drive (although it was new) was failing.

I right click on my volume icon, lower right and open the "volume mixer."
Three volume indicators.
1. speakers and the sliding ndiciator is at the top and when I test it, with my cursor, I hear the test sound.
2. Windows sounds and I get the same thing.
3. Windows Mail, no sounds. I can move the slider down to half way, and back up to the top and no sound.
What is wrong?

Hello,

I had a Windows application created "for-hire" several years ago (when XP was the dominant OS). The application was coded in VB6 and runs perfectly in XP. But in Vista and 7, however, it frequently hits a "Run-Time Error 75: Path/File Access Error" at startup.

When my users hit this error, I've been giving them a "band-aid" fix by telling them to right-click on the icon and "Run as Administrator." Now that nearly everyone is using Windows 7, I'm encountering that problem far too often and I want a permanent fix instead of a band-aid.

I think the problem is related to the 3 ActiveX files that the application accesses. As it stands now, these three OCX files are installed in C:\Windows\system32 by default (and registered as well). The three OCX files are:

RICHTX32.OCX
COMDLG32.OCX
MSCOMCTL.OCX

All of the other auxiliary files are installed in the same folder as the executable, so I don't think they are the problem. Other than that, the application uses some true-type fonts that are included with the installation.

There's got to be an easy way to fix this so I don't have to keep telling my users to "Run as Administrator." Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

Is there any way to securely force an auto run program from a USB device?  I want to use portable apps but need it to auto run.  I understand the reason for disabling this in W7 but would like to find a way around.

vista
and
win 7?

like CPU (how many cores), how much mem, etc

would you know where is the actual location of this scenic spot found in vista?

Experts,
I have been trying to upgrade a vista PC with regular windows updates. When I do so on the final step '3 of 3 configuring updates', the PC gets stuck in an reboot loop.

I see this is a common problem. I have no problem doing a restore and putting the PC back to the day prior, I have done it several times already. My question is how do I get past this and get the updates sucessfully installed. To be honest, it has been 2 and half years since I have been able to install updates, and I would like to get up to date.

What information would be needed to assist?

Having installed vista on my compaq765em the sound and modem are no longer being detected. The microsoft uaa bus is not listed in device manager under system devices, the section for Sound Video And Game Controllers is absent from the device manager. If i try to install the conexant drivers from the hp website , it fails telling me that there are no devices for the drivers (audio or modem). I have checked for hidden devices but none are listed and there is only one called keyboard filter ???. I could not find a driver on the conexant website, and oddly ,the hp website says goto the Realtek website and download the latest HD AUDIO DRIVERS. I did this and installed it, but it didnt make any difference. I then downloaded various softpaq fixes of the WINXP uaa driver, installed these but still no joy. I do see the drivers listed in the filestore, hdaudbus.sys.
I have tryed to enable the hdaudbus service but it tells me it is either disabled or has no devices associated with it.

This is for my customer. I fix PCs for a living. I am not onsite yet and need this answered BEFORE I go onsite (which will be 4 hours after this is posted 11:30 AM EST in the USA on 9/30/11) so I request a QUICK response if possible.

OS Is Vista. SP level unknown. There are two wireless routers (one Apple Airport Extreme and one Linksys and THAT info is 100% irrelevant to my question I believe). It is possible to manually connect to EITHER router and have internet. (NOTE: I do not know the details but that implies to me there are two Comcast modems (one in basement and the other on the 2nd floor as that is where the two routers are) and the two routers are each connected to one of the modems. Comcast is the ISP.)

I want to FORCE the PC to ALWAYS try to autoconnect at boot to one of the routers (the Airport Extreme) FIRST and the other ONLY if no connection is possible to the Airport Extreme (which should NEVER happen BTW). OR (see Question Two below) never connect at boot to the Linksys.  It appears (from what customer told me on phone before I go onsite) that SOMETIMEs the PC connects to the Linksys (NOT DESIRED except in unusual situations) and not the Airport Extreme. Example might be if the signal strength for the Linksys is stronger than for the Airport Extreme.

In Windows XP HERE is how you do that. Start>Network Connections   Then Right Click the Wireless adapter Icon and select Properties. Then click the Wireless Networks tab. Then in the…

I am attempting to restore a pc back to factory default with the factory.wim file located in the Recovery partition

.I copied the recovery partition to an external drive with the factory.wim file.I then reformatted the HD as it was infected and could not get it to boot.  I could access the HD if it was slaved to another pc.

I installed a copy of vista home but want to restore to factory default. I try to install the .wim with imagex but it tells me the user does not have the correct priveledges. This is the only user account on the pc as it is a fresh install.  I created two partitions one for a fresh copy of Vista Home and one for the recovery partition.

I installed the WAIK per Microsoft instructions. I also installed the WIM filter per the instructions

This is what I type on the command line:

 imagex /mount d:\dell\image\factory.wim c:

I am in the c:\program files\Window AIK\tools\x86>

The WIM file is located on the D Drive at  D:\dell\image\factory.wim

I am working on a Dell XP SP3 that had been infected with the latest version of a Fake antivirus.
I have cleaned the PC with a Kaspersky boot cd and everything is fine now except for one major problem. The Administrator (user) account behaves as a standard account. I can't do several things, most importantly, start the malware service.
I have tried the following:
1) Restoring to the earliest point in time possible.
2) Logging into safe mode, administrator, making the client a standard user after making a user with admin privileges, then rebooting and then making the the client an administrator.
3) A repair install.
I have looked up a lot of information on permissions that have been corrupted by viruses and after spending hours trying to fix the problem found that the only thing that worked for me was the XP Repair Install. I wanted to note this for everybody's future reference. XP REPAIR INSTALL WORKED FOR ME.
I do however have a question.
1) Is there an equivalent method (using install disks to fix registry permissions) for Vista and \or Windows 7? In other words, is there a way to fix (restore) permissions in either Vista or W7?
Thanks

I have been round and round looking at error codes and trying to get my Windows 7 Ultimate to update. It may have come from the Bizspark program or my Action Pack Subscription to The Microsoft Partner Action Pack. But for some reason every thing I have done to try to update it has failed.

I even had a Geek Squad specialist spend 3-4 hours on this trying to do it. His only solution was to reformat and reinstall. At this point I cannot. I could try to do a repair that is the only thing I have not done.

The license did come from a source that is authentic and authorized. Any advice on what I can do...........

I am having many issues with a windows vista ultimate machine.  This is not my machine so I have no idea what happened to it.  I have administrative rights on the machine (or so I think).  I thought it had a virus, but I cannot run any virus programs on it.   I downloaded Malwarebytes but I cannot access it.  Get this message "Windows cannot access the specified path, or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."  When I try to get to Mozilla Firefox -   Firefox has stopped working;   A problem caused the program to stop working corectly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.  Google Chrome - same message as firefox.  Any ideas?  I do not think the Administrator account is enabled.  When  I look at it in Users - it has the down arrow.  When I try to run the command to enable it, the message that the password does not meet the required .....

Our CEO is adamant about always having the same default path for any "save as" dialog box and wants this to be a network share that is a mapped drive for him.

I've been able to get this to work with everything except when he gets an email in Outlook that is a compressed Excel sheet.  No matter what, it temporarily decompresses the file to

C:\users\myusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\R4M5I5UR\filename.xls

This is in Windows 7.

He's expecting to be able to just double click the attachment, which opens up the file with Windows Explorer in the above path, then double click the Excel sheet, and now from within excel, click save as, and have it default to his network drive (this is setup as the default save path for Excel).   Instead it goes to try to save the file to a new folder for the zip file under:

C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\Temp1_filename.zip\filename.xls

I cannot find in the registry on any forums where to control this behavior, or whether doing so will affect the temporary save location for Windows Explorer in general.

I had another idea of trying to use different software, like WinRAR, that would let me change this location, which it does seem to work, however, it also creates its own temp folder in this path that it decompresses to, like Rar$DI00.717
Which is close, but no cigar.  I'm not opposed at all to using or purchasing any third party software, just need it save the excel sheet at …
