Download not working
I have a software download on a website. Recently everyone started complaining that when they download when the download reaches 100% it says "Cannot access <filename>: Access is denied" . Make sure disk is not full or write protected.

I tried it and am facing the same issue.

Any idea on what may be going on?

Is this a very large file? Some webservers can't handle files larger then 2 or 4GB.

Is it possible that an antivirus on the local machine is blocking access/deleting the file when it finishes downloading - and just before the computer tries to open it ?

If you download the file to a specific location and then ry to open it does it work ?

What extension does the file have ?

I got XP,
The file is .exe
I try to save to desktop or to c:\ both do not work

File size is about 3 MB.

Harddisk has a lot of free space (Gigs)

As I suspected you have probably hit a limitation of that web server.
Do you know what it is running (IIS, apache, ...)

I would think it is some security implimentation that is blocking access to it. You said originally that the download dialog box reaches 100% so this would indicate that there is no problem on the server side - and that the file gets to the PC. Try downloading other .exe 's and see if they behave the same. (plenty to be found on download.com).

My hosting company says they are able to download the files and execute them.

Also I am ble to download using a FTP software however it then says I do not have appropriate permissions to acces the item.

Is this your own PC or a work PC ? - If its your own, check to see that you have administrative privlidges. Also check your antivirus logs and see if they mention anything about the file.

Check the permisson on your C:\.

The file is first downloaded into your temp directory and than coppied to the location you selected. If you do not have access to C: you might get ths error.

The file is on my webser and I am downloadin it using :

http://sitename.com/folder/filename.exe

I realised that if I change the filename to filename.exe.new I am able to download it.
However after download when I rename the file to .exe it no longer executes.

I think this makes it clear that it is some local process or antivirus that is causing the issue. I disabled Mcafee and dont have anything else running...the issue persists.

Anyone ?

Security is the protection of information systems from theft or damage to the hardware, the software, and the information on them, as well as from disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. The main goal of security is protecting assets, and an asset is anything of value and worthy of protection. Information Security is a discipline of protecting information assets from threats through safeguards to achieve the objectives of confidentiality, integrity, and availability or CIA for short. On the other hand, disclosure, alteration, and disruption (DAD) compromise the security objectives.
