Remote Desktop Not Working with Linksys WRT54G Router
I've been using Remote Desktop for years with Windows XP on my home computer.  I just setup a wireless router using the Linksys WRT54G.  I can remote into my desktop computer from within the network, but no longer can I remote into externally.

I set port forwarding according to the directions on http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/Remote_Desktop.htm.  The only difference is I don't have the "Disable Firewall Protection" option my router menu.   Other than that, I followed all the instructions exactly.

From outside the network, I can ping my router and it seems to come back fine, but I cannot connect using RDP externally.  I forwarded ports 3389 to the internal ip address of the desktop.  Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I may be missing?  If I plug the desktop into the DSL modem, then I can remote desktop just fine.

I've found with alot of the linksys routers you can set up the forward and it will save fine but its not turned on at default.  Make sure  you have your forward enabled.

What kind of router are you connecting from outside of the network? Maybe you have conflicts. Chances are it is 2 linksys routers conflicting

Remember both routers take the 192.168.1.1 address by default if they are both linksys that is.

change the local IP of the linksys outside of the network or if you connect alot outside from differnt locations it may be worth while to make that change at the office to avoid future IP conflicts between routers.

I had to change the address of the LinkSys router to 192.168.2.1 because it was conflicting with the DSL modem (which has a firewall built in).  I used IP passthrough on the DSL modem.  The linkSys router reports the external ip address as 68.x.x.x so that's ok.   I have the port forwarding turned enabled and assigned.  The PC I'm trying to connect to address is 192.168.2.100 (internally).  I'm forwarding port 3389 throuth 3389 to 192.168.2.100.

Right...that was what I was implying towards. Conflicts within the routers and thier IP's

What about the routing and remote access tables in the DHCP on the server? Have you checked that?

Avatar of XconXcon🇺🇸

I still think that your issue is within the router configuration. Because when you connect outside of the router everything is fine.

Are we sure that the issue isn't in the routing and remote access configuration within the server?

RRAS on what what server?

bugsnbre2, if you provide the make and model of the modem we may be able to provide details as to how to put it in bridge mode. Though forwarding twice as in option 1 above, works fine for remote desktop, other services such as a VPN, should you ever want to configure one, will not work. The latter would require bridge mode.

The DSL modem is already set for IP Passthrough.  This is what was required to get it to work the first time.  Anyway, my DSL modem is the Netopia 2241N.  The wireless router recognizes the external IP address as the external internet address.  (i.e. When I go to whatismyip.com both addresses match).

Guys,  I'm having a new issue tonight.  When I connect to my WAN router, it is SLOW!!!  Sometimes even Internet Explorer says 'Cannot find server".   It was very fast last night.

Ok, the slow problem is fixed.  I hit the reset button on the router and the speed problem is no more.

There are no other routers present then? It is
Internet => Netopia (bridged)=>WRT54G=>PC

You can test from outside the network to see if 3389 is open using telnet from a command line. Enter:
telnet  68.x.x.x  3389
If the port is "open" you will get a blank screen with a flashing cursor. If not it will time out or give you an error.

Another test from the inside it to go to  http://www.canyouseeme.org and test for port 3389

I went to canyouseeme.org and got a connection timeout when I tried to connect to port 3389.

Guys,
Thank you for all your help.  I don't know why, but it's working now!  All I did was reset my router since it was running very slowly and went through all the steps described above.  When I go out to canyouseeme.org, it still says it cannot see my router, but I can RemoteDesktop into that PC from a remote location.  Very strange indeed!  Anyhow, at least it works and I'm back in business.  I was ready to start learning about VPN which is overkill since there is only 1 PC on my home network that I need access to.  The other is a laptop.

I'm always leaving files and other things at home and I always like to have access to my home PC from work.

Sometimes changes are not applied, even though they should be, to routers until after reboot. Might explain.

CanYouSeeMe needs to be run from the PC to which you are connecting not the one you are connecting from. It should work, but guess that is not important.

VPN would be more secure if you want to look at that option. # of PC's is not relevant to it's use, but more the level of security required.

Thanks for the update and glad to hear you are working.

Thanks bugsnbre2.
Cheers !

Networking is the process of connecting computing devices, peripherals and terminals together through a system that uses wiring, cabling or radio waves that enable their users to communicate, share information and interact over distances. Often associated are issues regarding operating systems, hardware and equipment, cloud and virtual networking, protocols, architecture, storage and management.
