Avaya IP Office - SMTP Issue.
Hi Guys,

I've been dealing with this issue for quite some time and still haven't found a way of resolving it.
I need my Avaya IP office Β to forward the voice mail to email, all is setup with the right config details, yet it does not send and when i verify the status on the IP Office System Status it mentions: SMTP communication failure as shown on the image below:

ANY IDEAS? Any idea on how i can troubleshoot this? Its the only device on my network that has problems emailing...

Several possibilities come to mind....

1) Avaya has no network route to the smtp server (seperate vlan or network possibly?..possibley a DNS issue trying to resolve the hostname of the mail server)
2) Avaya has the wrong credentials or is not using credentials to send mail and it is required
3) The IP address is not in a range that is allowed to connect to the smtp server.

"communication failure".... sounds like an error that would occur if it was able to connect to the server initially, but the server rejected the mail or connection and closed the connection prematurely.

Are any errors showing on the mail server?

. . . agree with both comments above. You need to see if the Avaya can actually reach the email server. Don't know enough about Avaya to know if there's a CLI to be able to check connectivity. But you can trace the connection from the email server and see if you ever see an attempt by the Avaya to connect. Use wireshark or tcpdump (if for some odd reason you are using a unix based email server. Ha!)

Good luck,

Hello,
Culd you tell me what release and version of Voicemail you are running ?
Have you enable logging for the voicemail? Do you have any logs?
Here is how to enable logging and do some tests then send me the logs.

Enabling SMTP Error Reporting:
1. Stop the Voicemail Pro service
2. Start the Registry Editor.
3. Locate the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Alchemy\Voicemail\Directories.
4. From the menu bar select Edit.
5. Select New and then String Value.
6. Enter SMTPLogging.
7. Right-click on the new registry key SMTPLogging and select Modify.
8. Set the value to 1.
9. Close the Registry Editor
Here are the

Have you define the SMPT server name or IP address in the properties?

The SMTP server is configured on the IP Office Manager 8.0 (14) and the embedded voicemail is being used. As mentioned before this is the only device that can't send out alerts i have other devices on the network with the exact same configuration, the account that is being used to authenticate is correct as well and is the same used on the other devices - Β It also on the exact same range as everything else on the network.

I'm using a hosted exchange solution so it's an external IP.

the only thing i could think of would be the routing...i cant figure out the section where one configures the gateway. There is a IP address section , a IP Mask and then a Primary Trans IP Address, would that be the same? Would Primary Trans IP Address be the default gateway?
