When I went to the credentials manager. I got an error message saying error occurred while performing this task and the web credentials were highlighted . I do see windows credentials and able to click on it but the website in question or EE is not listed there.
First I assume you got into Control Panel using an administrator account.
Second, you have other problems it appears. Â Try running both of the following
System File Checker:
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW.
Allow to complete, restart or, preferably, shut down the computer and then start up again.
Test to see if the problem has been corrected.
DISM:
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
Restart the computer and test.

I am the administrator. give me some time to do what U suggested.
error 740 when I tried to run the test. Elevated permission required to run DISM
You can run a Windows 10 Repair Install and Keep Everything so nothing is lost.
Go to the Media Creation Link
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Click on Upgrade to Windows 10 (even if Windows 10 is running), click on the Download button, select Open (Run) but NOT Save. It is possible you may need to go to the download location and run the program - it depends on exactly what MCL does (it changes from time to time). Allow the program to run. Allow drivers to update. Then select Keep Everything.

Can u tell me how do I run the cmd.exe as an administrator?
Can you please double check one thing for me?
Are you certain you ran the cmd.exe as administrator? I know your Windows account may have administrator privileges, but you also need to right click and select "Run as administrator" as well. Â If you didn't do that, then that would explain the following error you said you got..
error 740 when I tried to run the test. Elevated permission required to run DISMTo open a command prompt with Administrator privileges
1. Right Click over Command Prompt - Desktop app
2. Left Click "Run as administrator"
3. Now try running the commands suggested by >Limited Member< above..

Did you get an "Elevated permission required to run DISM" error this time?
Go to the Search button, type in cmd.exe and at the top you see Command Prompt. Right Click on that and select Run as Administrator. Good luck.

The restore operation completed successfully.
Did you also run the command SFC /SCANNOW Â ? Â If not, please do so, then reboot.
Next..
1. Save your EE login settings once again as you normally would in your browser.
2. Try opening up Credential Manager again - any errors this time when opening Credential Manager?
If not, restart and see if your EE login settings now remain.
Report back with your progress..

Nothing will be lost. It's not a destructive diagnostic and only checks to ensure that all Windows system files are healthy and replaces them if they are not. Â Nothing to worry about with SFC .. Â Just report back once you've had time to go through the process.
Oh.. and you're welcome :)

You have a corrupt Credentials Manager, which also relates to Microsoft Edge. Â (Even though you are using Chrome)
Hang about and I'll prepare some step by step instructions for you on how to repair the error.
Will post again soon.
Please complete the following steps;
1. Open Microsoft Edge browser and click the three . . . dots to the top right of the browser
2. Click Settings

3. Click View advanced settings  (Scroll down if you can't see the View advanced settings option)

4. Click Manage passwords  (Scroll down if you can't see the Manage Passwords settings option)

Now select any entry in there (doesn't matter which one) and click the Save button to save that entry again. Â
That should over-write the corruption. Â
Once done, close Microsoft Edge and test Credential Manager again to see if it will open without error. Â
If it still errors, let me know (confirm it is the same error) and I'll give you another remedy.
Please report back with results when ready.
I did what u said and the same error message as previous showed up

I think you need to proceed with the Repair Install outlined above. This takes 5 minutes or less to set up, and then just some time. Â Consider that approach.
There is a drug information web site that I keep the box remember me checked so that I don't have to enter user name or password yet everytime I log in after restart I get asked to click on log in button at this point the user name and password are already filled out. That is the function of the remember me tick box (to fill in details) and it is working correctly. The issue you are having is that your sessions expire. This can happen with browser cleanup tool, manually deleting cookies or simply timing out the TTL of the session

It is running in the services as a manual start up
One of the following methods should repair the problem. Â We'll start with the least problematic one.
Steps 1. Â Press Widows Key and Type "services" to run the Desktop app as shown below

Steps 2. Â In the Services window, right click Credential Manager service and then select Properties as shown below

The following steps may not make much sense, but it has worked before so bear with me :)
Steps 3. Â Change the Credential Manager service to Disabled, then click Apply, then click Stop to stop the service. Â

Steps 4. Â Now we are going to do the reverse of Steps 3. Â Change the Service back to Manual, then click Apply, then click the Start button to start the service again. Â Shown in the screen grab below.

Close the Services window and try Credential Manager again. Â If it opens without error, then disregard the steps below.
If you are still getting the same error after completing the above steps, then the following process "should" definitely fix it, but you will lose all of your saved credentials in Credential Manager and will need to re-enter them again, either manually or via the browser.
That's why I've left this option as a final last resort to repair the corruption.
Final Option
1.  Press your Windows Key and type  %appdata%  then press your Enter Key .. shown below

2. Â Windows Explorer will open. Â Browse to AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\
3. Â Back up all files and/or folder(s) in that directory by copying them to a temporary folder (just in case)
4. Â Now delete everything in that folder (Send to Recycle Bin) so that the folder is empty.

Credential Manager should now open without error. Â Does it?
Hopefully, that will have finally resolved your Credential Manager corruption problems.
Please confirm if that fixed the "Credential Manager" problem or not.
Let us know how you went with that.
Hope it helps.
One more thing. Â If none of the above procedures resolved the Credential Manager error, please take a screen shot of the error you are getting and upload / include it in your next reply.
Thanks..

As a result of everything suggested not working, I now view that as a symptom of a more serious problem with your Windows installation, rather than a root cause of what you're trying to repair. Â
You now need to decide if you wish to continue trouble shooting - which could become quite a lengthy and involved process, or do a non destructive repair reinstall as suggested by Experienced Member to see if that will resolve your issues. Â
Given your apparent skill set and past reluctance to make changes to the Windows Registry (which "can" be risky so I don't blame you if you're not comfortable doing it), I would suggest the latter, so I'll leave you in Experienced Member's capable hands.
Experienced Member's suggestion requires that you closely and accurately follow specific instructions to ensure you do not inadvertently overwrite your existing installation and end up losing data, so it's better to be guided in the process by one expert, rather than risk confusion by following multiple expert's suggestions.
Alternatively, you could use the Live Support option available at Experts Exchange to obtain one on one paid live help to continue trying to repair the browser related problem that you initiated this question with.
I only suggest this because I've noted a tendency for you to skip steps requested of you, such as my request to upload a screen grab of the error with your next reply which can make this entire process long and tedious, so perhaps Live may be a better option for you in this case.
how much space is neededMany system files are refreshed (over-written) in Expert Member's suggestion, so space is not really a consideration, apart from having the necessary space required to download and save a Microsoft Windows 10 ISO. About ~3GB from memory.
does it delete any of my computer information files pictures videos etc. is it safe ?
No, your personal files are not deleted.
It is quite a safe process, but it is imperative that it is done correctly so follow instructions exactly as they are given to you. Â This is very important because selecting the wrong option during the process can initiate a total reinstall of Windows which would effectively delete everything, both your files and programs.
how long does the process take ?It only takes minutes to initiate, however you can expect to wait between 1 - 2 hours for the process to complete once initiated.
Good luck
I had described and entered all the information on the error message so I don't know why u r saying I did not follow the instructions . I just merely tried to use an easier method to convey the error message. I will post it though. Â Thank you. Can I continue dealing with you as only member? how much is live support?

I had described and entered all the information on the error message so I don't know why u r saying I did not follow the instructions . I just merely tried to use an easier method to convey the error message.I wasn't having a go at you Basem, it's just that if suggested methods of repair don't appear to work, then it's often helpful for experts to visually "view" an error "you" are seeing, as that can jog a memory of seeing that particular error before. Â
Windows has a tendency to use generic wording for many errors it reports - often being able to see an error visually if obvious remedies aren't working can be helpful for me, because I may have come across a particular error in the past and seeing it could help with further suggestions.
Can I continue dealing with you as only member?Thank you for the vote of confidence, but I can assure you Experienced Member is also a very capable Windows trouble shooter who has helped many people in the past. We just have a different approach to fixing problems is all. For instance, he often prefers to try initiating a repair install a lot sooner than I do.
I personally prefer to find the cause of a problem and fix it rather than just refresh everything because the latter doesn't confirm what caused the problem in the first place, and opens up the possibility of getting that same problem again. I'll often wait until every other effort has failed before suggesting a repair install.
That doesn't mean that Expert Member's suggestion is wrong though, the chances of it helping are quite good.
Rather, it just means we take a different approach to resolving issues for different reasons. I suspect the Reinstall Option has been suggested on this occasion in order to save a lot of trouble shooting time.
how much is live support? That depends on the available expert you select to help you with the problem. All experts set their own hourly rates and you are able to select from any of them. Â The first 5 minutes are free.
Having said all that, if you wish to continue trouble shooting here, of course I'm happy to continue assisting you, just please follow any requests made of you.
If you do intend to try try a Repair Install though, it would make more sense to leave any further trouble shooting aside until that step has been completed because the playing field would be substantially altered.
This request is only valid if you decide not to try the repair install yet and continue trouble shooting, with the understanding that some Windows Registry editing (regedit.exe) may also be required further down the track..

Thank you for opening up the details tab and reuploading.
Please try the following steps and report on findings.
- Press Windows Key + R and type Regedit, then press Enter or click OK
- Click Yes to "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?"
- Next we will backup the entire Windows Registry in case a mistake is made
First - Backup your Windows Registry
- In Regedit, click "File >Â Export"
- Ensure the Export Range is set to All
- Give the backup a descriptive name like "Registry Backup" in the File name: box and click the "Save" button - it doesn't matter where you save it to, just remember the location you selected in case it's needed later.
- The last step makes a backup of your entire Windows Registry Settings, so any edits or changes made from here on can be reversed by double clicking on the "Registry Backup.reg" file you saved. This is a safeguard in case you make a mistake when changing registry settings.
Second - Check Registry Entry as follows
- Navigate to the following location in the Registry Editor
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CurrentCon trolSet\Se rvices\Vau ltSvc\Para meters - Check the "ServiceDll" entry on the right hand side - it "should" be C:\Windows\System32\vaults
vc.dll - If it is not, make a note of what it currently is, then edit the entry and change it to read exactly as shown above.
- Also check to ensure no hidden spaces exist at the start, or end of the above data value. If there are, remove them.
- Restart Windows after making changes and then try Credential Manager again to see if the error still exists.
if the registry entry is already as shown above in bold, with no extra words or spacing, report back for additional trouble shooting steps
Thanks..
Further to the above, can you confirm that "Hidden items" is ticked to allow you to view hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer? Â
On the View tab of Windows Explorer, check to see if you have ticks as shown below. Â If not, that could explain why the Final Option in this Previous Suggestion did not work.

If it was not, please repeat the Final Option steps in this ID: 42208977 previous suggestion to ensure everything in there is deleted as was suggested before trying Credential Manager again.
If "Hidden items" was already ticked, you can safely ignore this post.
Thanks..
I appreciate all your help and patience first. The registry showed exactly what u said to look for. Hidden items are checked in explorer. Â %appdata% Â roaming microsoft protect---folder. The folder is empty however I am not sure if I mentioned this or not for some reason a couple entries {2} to be exact showed up in it yesterday which I copied the folder and the contents to desktop though before deleting them.

I appreciate all your help and patience first. No worries, it's just another puzzle to me so together with some patience and perseverance, I'm confident we can solve it.
not sure if I mentioned this or not for some reason a couple entries {2} to be exact showed up in it yesterday which I copied the folder and the contents to desktop though before deleting them.No you forgot, but never mind. I forgot to ask you to check if your hidden files setting was checked in Windows Explorer so that can happen to any of us :)
That's actually very useful information though, because it should have been empty after clearing that folder if Credential Manager is still throwing up an error. Â
Given that new information, please perform the following steps again, in the order listed below.
- Open Credential Manager and verify you are still getting the same error
- If Yes and you are still getting the same error, Close Credential Manager again.
- Next, Open Microsoft Edge
- Click the Three . . . Dots at top right of Edge
- Click Settings
- Click View Advanced Settings
- Click Manage Passwords
- Step by Step instructions for the above steps already given here ID 42208810
- Move to 1A. below
1A. Do any entries exist in the Manage Passwords "Web Credentials" section? Â
If no entries in Web Credentials, just move to 1B. below
If yes, edit any random entry and change the password (or just retype the existing password) in there (the password will be hidden by bold dots) and then click Save
Move to 1B. below
1B. Do any entries exist in the Manage Passwords "Windows Credentials" section?
If no, move to 1C. below
If yes, edit any entry you remember the password to, re-type over its existing password and click the Save button
Move to 1C. below
1C. Close all windows and exit Edge.
Try opening Credential Manager again now. Â Still getting an error? Â
If no error now, then that problem is solved so just report back.
If yes, still getting same error, then move to 1D. below
1D. Close Credential Manager again.
- Click Start >Â Run
- Type %appdata% and click OK
- Browse to "AppData\Roaming\Microsoft
\Protect"
Is the "Protect" folder still empty? Contains no folders or files at all ?
If yes and it's still empty, that's all you need to check for now. Just report back detailing all of your findings after the above steps.
If no and folders or files now do exist in there, delete everything in there and then try opening Credential Manager once again.
Still getting the same error? Â Again, report back detailing all of your findings.
If the error is still not resolved after all the above, then all methods I've used in the past to successfully repair the Credential Manager error have now been tried. Â In that case, I'll need to do a little research on the problem and get back to you. I suspect we will need to do some more work in the registry to track down what's going wrong.
I look forward to hearing back from you with your results.
Best..
- Did any entries exist in the Manage Passwords "Web Credentials" section of Edge?
- Did any entries exist in the Manage Passwords "Windows Credentials" section of Edge?
- Was the "Protect" folder still empty? Contained no folders or files at all ?
- Still getting the same Credential Manager error? Â Report back confirming all steps above were followed and any other findings.
Hope that's helpful.
Did any entries exist in the Manage Passwords "Windows Credentials" section of Edge? YES
Was the "Protect" folder still empty? Contained no folders or files at all ?YES it is empty. But Can I copy the contents from the backup folder in my desktop and paste it there?
